How To: Upgrade your iTunes Library to iTunes+

Posted on by Chad Garrett.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Apple has made upgrading your iTunes library to iTunes plus easier than ever! So to share the good news, we have created this post to show you the steps involved. Ready? More after the break!

Click the “Upgrade My Library Link” from the QUICK LINKS section of iTunes

This link brings you to a screen that displays the Audio and Video tracks you have that are eligable for iTunes+ upgrades. Once you decide you want to upgrade, click the BUY link

Next you will get a confirmation dialog box asking if you want to purchase the upgrade (assuming you have not disabled this feature)

Apple then tells you that the files in your iTunes library will be replaced. The cool thing is Apple gives you two options: delete them, or move them to a folder on the desktop. I strongly recommend option #2!

Once they conversion is done, your files are replaced and iTunes tells you that you have nothing left eligible to be upgraded.

Afterwards, as songs become available for upgrade, they will automatically show in the QUICK LINKS section

I found the entire process of upgrading my library very easy. I am looking forward to the rest of my purchases to be eligible in the near future. Unlike some stories I have heard, it did not take long at up to upgrade, probably 5 minutes. iTunes simply exports the DRM content to your desktop and downloads DRM free content to replace it; simple!

Macworld 2009: Previews of upcoming Freeverse titles

If there's one game company that I really like, it's Freeverse. These guys have come up with some great iPhone games like Flick Sports Bowling, Flick Sports Fishing, and Wingnuts Motochaser, and they have even more titles in the works.

On Friday, January 9th, I had the opportunity to talk with Brian Akaka of Freeverse about the upcoming apps from the company, including Flick Sports Baseball, Slotz Racer, Days of Thunder, and Roads of Ruin. In particular, the Flick Baseball title looks like it will be a winner, with very detailed rendering of players as well as accelerometer-based gestures for batting and throwing.

Brian noted that if Macworld Expo does happen in 2010, Freeverse won't have a booth -- like Apple, they feel that the cost of exhibiting at the Expo could be better spent in product development and other marketing.

Enjoy the ride as Brian takes us through both the existing and upcoming games from Freeverse. You can find the video in the second half of this post.

Today TiPb presents to you a special gaming edition of Apps for Less. The following games could go well with the custom TiPb Element Liquid Cases that we are giving away!

This first game is for all of the first person shooter fans out there, Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes has just dropped a few bucks to $5.99. [iTunes Link] If you missed msbaylor’s forum review, be sure to take a minute and see what this game is all about.

This next one sparked a little bit of comment controversy over its price not to long ago in its preview, UNO. [iTunes Link] Well for all of those who said the price of $7.99 was a bit to steep, how is $4.99? Is that enough to make to take the plunge?

These last two games we want to bring to your attention are brought to us by Electronic Arts. YAHTZEE Adventures and MONOPOLY Here and Now: The World Edition have both gone on sale for a limited time. YAHTZEE Adventures being priced at $2.99 and MONOPOLY priced at $4.99.

Have we missed a good deal that you know about and want to share with everyone? Feel free to send us a email and let us know!

Apple suddenly approves a bunch of browsers for App Store; major policy shift in progress?

Posted on by Chris Ziegler.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Okay, so maybe a new browser isn't the first thing we'd like to see replaced with some fresh thinking out of the App Store -- that honor probably goes to the email client, preferably with something that could rival the G1's capabilities -- but regardless, Apple's infamous "duplication of functionality" argument has hamstrung iPhone developers from even coming close to stepping on the mothership's toes from day one. Consistent application of policy is still at a premium when it comes to getting iPhone apps approved, it seems -- it's hit or miss, and as best as we can tell, a happy ending involves the crossing of fingers and getting a reviewer inside Apple who's having a good day. It looks like Apple's slowly and quietly tweaking its game in response to complaints, though, with MacRumors noting that a slew of browsers have gone on sale in the past day; some of these things have submission dates several months old, so it seems like they've been holding in some sort of purgatory while Steve and the gang debate the merits of letting programmers actually practice their trade in peace. Odds are none of these initial entries will hold up to Safari for good, old-fashioned browsing, but more importantly, this might just open up the door for Opera and others to get in on the game.

Review: WiFinder for iPhone

WiFinder is very good at showing you all the networks in range of your device, open or not. But the app only connects to open networks—and performance can be more spotty there.
