Ustream iPhone Viewer’s Inaugural Debut

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

With built-in YouTube, SlingMedia Player in the works, and now Ustream announcing an iPhone viewer, is Flash still going to dominate most-wanted lists, or is Apple actually halting Adobe’s video advance? We don’t know, but we do know we’re really excited by the mobile video options we’re already seeing:

Ustream has developed an application for the 3G iphone that allows you to watch Ustream anywhere w/everyone. Regardless of where you are at and what you are doing, you can choose to be in the moment with others in a shared live experience around a live event. If you are out-on-the-town and know that a guest speaker at a major conference is “going live” and want to watch live and be-in-the-crowd, then you can with this application. You will be able to watch the Inauguration LIVE on Ustream with chat.

If Apple approves the Ustream Viewer in time, who’ll be watching?

iPhone pix making front pages

The crash and near miraculous rescue of the passengers and crew of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in New York City has been big news for the last day. Like many news events, it has been extensively covered by news agencies, and, as we are seeing more frequently now, by the public using camera phones.

With the popularity of the iPhone a breaking news story, it seems, is never far from our favorite cellular device.

Janis Krums, a Florida businessman, was on a Hudson River ferry boat when the pilot plunged the airliner into the frigid waters yesterday afternoon. His picture of the sinking aircraft, with passengers knee deep in water on the right wing helped tell the story in a single image, and his dramatic shot was splashed on front pages across the country. Krums used Twitpic to publish his photo, and that service was soon shut down by high traffic. He was interviewed on MSNBC and kept his friends up to date on his Twitter feed.

Flickr is also displaying lots of photos from the scene, many of them taken by iPhones. Not much happens today out of the sight of a camera or a camera phone. Janis Krums scooped just about everybody using only his quick wits and his favorite mobile phone.

Tweetie 1.2 for iPhone adds Instapaper, enhanced functionality and some hilarity

Posted on by Christina Warren.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Tweetie, my current favorite Twitter client for the iPhone, has just been updated to version 1.2 [iTunes link]. While the update offers a slew of enhancements, new features and improved functionality, what makes this release memorable and unique is the sly dose of humor developer Loren Brichter inserted in the latest version of the app.

Updates and Improvements

Because Loren was nice enough to let me into the Tweetie beta, I've had the opportunity to watch some of the new features evolve and improve over the last month or so. What was already a great app is now even better, thanks to new additions and refinements to existing features.

  • Instapaper support. Now if you see a link in a tweet that you want to save for later, you have the option to save it to Instapaper, in addition to e-mailing, tweeting or opening the link in Safari.
  • Block/unblock from the app
  • Remember scroll position on relaunch and refresh
  • Twitpic linking for photos
  • Optional landscape keyboard (note: if you choose this option you will have landscape mode regardless of how your device is held.)
  • Switch account from the "compose" menu (super helpful if you manage accounts that have some overlap in followers)
  • A new "Swipe to reply" shortcut
  • Drafts persist after relaunch
  • Nearby radius control
There are even more features and enhancements, and you can see the whole list at the developer's blog.
(A note: To access some of these new features, you'll need to go to the Tweetie pane in "Settings" on your iPhone or iPod touch and then select or change your preference.)

Popularity EnhancEr = Hilarity

We love it when developers have a sense of humor. Not content with having Tweetie become popular just because it is a quality app, Loren Brichter decided to bring a taste of the more popular -- if inane -- App Store apps: farts and flashlights.

Enable the Popularity Enhancer and not only do you get a nifty flashlight, the new swipe to reply feature will make a hilarious wet fart sound.

Brilliant.

Tweetie 1.2
[iTunes link] is availalbe in the App Store for $2.99 US and of course, existing users can download the update directly from the device or from iTunes.

Sneaky iPhone Developer Wobbles Around Apple’s “Boob” Ban

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Warning: Video possibly NSFW-ish. If bikini bouncing will get you in trouble, stay clear.

We previously mentioned in passing that Apple had rejected iBoobs, an iPhone app that presented accelerometer-powered cartoon jiggling. Apparently this crossed even the (sigh) fart app line. Well, the Register says Wobble decided to get around this by not providing any built in booty, cartoon or otherwise. All it does is enable user-definable “wobble” zones in ANY photo or image. We’re guessing that while the above video makes the real focus clear enough, Wobble was likely submitted to Apple with more innocuous images, like jello or cartoon puppies or what not.

As such, Wobble is now one of the more than 15,000 apps available via the iTunes App Store. You buying it? Protesting it? Protesting out loud while nonchalantly hitting the download link?

And guys, before you get too jiggly with it, just imagine what the ladies might do in Wobble revenge…

AT&T Outage: AGAIN!?

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.
Categories: Uncategorized.

So once again AT&T seems to be having issues. TiPb reported on the two previous outages, which seemed to effect a much larger area then the current outage.

I read one report of someone in Philadelphia on the forums today, did not think much of it until I read a post on BGR just now. According to a BGR tipster this outage is effecting affecting Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. It is creating the inability to hear the party on the other end of the line during outbound and inbound calls. Data at this point does not seem to be effected.

AT&T is said to be well aware of the situation and is working on getting it back up to be fully operational. So just how many of our readers are currently having issues? Anyone?

Knife Music e-book approved for App Store after language modification

Posted on by Darren Murph.
Categories: Uncategorized.

We're not exactly sure what this says about the officially unofficial App Store policy on explicit content, but David Carnoy's Knife Music has just been approved for distribution in said marketplace after the so-called "objectionable content" was removed. Essentially, the author decided to submit a copy of the novel sans a few foul words, with him noting that it was "more important to have people check the book out -- along with the whole concept of e-books on the iPhone" -- rather than take some stance for personal liberties and whatnot. For those interested, it's ready for download as we speak at no charge, but if you're the indecent type, you'll have to manually add in those swears as you go.

Apple: 15,000 iPhone Apps, Half a Billion Downloads

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Head over to Apple.com yet today? If you haven’t seen it already, a new hero image has taken it’s place boom smack in the middle of the home page and it’s announcement couldn’t be more mind-boggling: the App Store now includes over 15,000 iPhone applications, and iPhone users have downloaded apps more that 500,000,000 times.

Considering the App Store only launched 6 months ago, we’re reminded of what Steve Jobs said last quarter — that, in all his time at Apple, they’d never seen platform growth or attachment rates this fast and this furious.

How many apps do you think you’ve downloaded?

Done goes live, Chillix announces winners

Done, the iPhone task list manager we mentioned a little while back, is now live in the App Store. It's pretty slick, and falls right in the middle between a simple task list and a robust task management application like Things or OmniFocus. We hosted a contest in that last post, passing on a request from the developers for witty lists, the best of which (chosen by the developers) would be used in the App Store marketing materials. You all came through, and winners were chosen from the ranks.

The winners, chosen by Chillix, are KJP, Chad, Kevin, Todd, Gary & Kurt!

Some of the winners posted directly on the Chillix site, some posted here. If your list was chosen and you haven't been contacted yet, expect to hear from the developers soon. Thanks to everyone who participated!

App Store hits 500 million downloads: thanks, iFart

Posted on by Paul Miller.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Wowsers, that little App Store side project Apple has going on sure doesn't seem to be settling down. After launching in July of '08 and hitting 100 million downloads in September, the App Store has just crossed the 500 million download mark -- a mere six months after opening. Compare that to the iTunes Music Store, which took two whole years to cross the 500 million mark, though to be fair we have little idea of the paid to free ratio of app downloads. There are over 15,000 apps in the App Store currently, and sure, 14,500 of them are crap, with the rest being tip calculators, but we gotta hand it to Apple for pretty much unprecedented success in the mobile download space -- now let us download SNES emulators!

[Thanks, Richard]

iPhone 101: How to Change Your iPhone Wallpaper

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Welcome to iPhone 101, TiPb’s single point of success for new iPhone users, and for veterans who know new users and need a quick and helpful place to point them. This time we’re going to take a look at how to personalize your iPhone with a different — even custom — wallpaper of your own choosing, including your own photos and artwork.

We’ll show you how, after the break.

Wallpaper Settings

Begin from your iPhone’s home screen. If you’re not on the home screen, just press the big button on the bottom of your iPhone, then tap the Settings icon (default location is on the first Home screen, right hand side in the middle). At the bottom of the Settings screen will be the Wallpaper option.

Tap on Wallpaper and a set of galleries will slide across into view.

The topmost gallery is chock full of Apple provided wallpapers, focused on organic imagery including flowers, insects, rocks, trees, etc., as well as famous works of art, and a few patterns. (See the screenshot at the top of this how-to)

Below the default gallery is a list topped off by your Camera Roll (any pictures you’ve taken with your iPhone camera), and Photo Library, which includes every other picture currently stored on your iPhone (synced from your PC or Mac via iTunes).

Lastly are all the individual photo galleries, if any, listed by name. This can be a quicker way to find a specific photo in your library, provided you remember in which gallery you’ve filed it.

Choosing Your Wallpaper

To pick your wallpaper, starting by choosing one of the photo galleries outlined above. This will bring up a series of thumbnails containing all the images in the chosen gallery. If there are too many thumbnails to fit on a single screen, you can swipe up or down to navigate through them.

When you find the photo or image you want, tap on it. A full screen preview will slide up.

From this screen, you can scale the image by touching two fingers to the screen and pinching them together (to shrink it) or spreading them apart (to grow it).

If the image is larger than the iPhone’s display (320 pixels wide by 480 pixels high in portrait mode), or you’ve zoomed in on it, you can also touch one finger to the screen and move it around to slide the image into exactly the right position (for example, to center a face in a photograph).

To return the image to it’s original size and re-center it, just double tap the screen.

Setting Your Wallpaper

When you’ve got the image just the way you want it, tap the Set Wallpaper button on the bottom right and the next time you wake your iPhone, your new wallpaper will leap up to greet you.

Quick Tip: Setting Your Wallpaper From the Photo App

We’ve shown you before how to email a picture from within the Photo viewer. The same process can be used to quickly set any picture you’re currently looking at as the default wallpaper, simply select the Use As Wallpaper option instead.

Looking for More Wallpapers?

Now that you know how to change your wallpaper, maybe you’re looking for some images to try out? Look no further than TiPb’s iPhone Forum, where our resident super-moderator Bad Ash kicked off a thread now containing a veritable gold-mine of wallpapers. And if you have any trouble, it’s the perfect place to ask questions and get some personalized help. You can even share some favorite wallpapers of your own!
