CubeCheater solves that Rubik’s Cube for you

As we know from the iPhone television commercials, if there's something you need to do, there's an app for that. And so apparently, if the thing you want to do is solve a Rubik's Cube, then yes, there is an app for that. CubeCheater will help you quickly solve a Rubik's Cube -- all you do is punch in the colors on your cube right now, and then you get directions, complete with rotating graphics, on what steps to take to solve the cube.

It's not built from scratch -- the app uses an algorithm already developed for solving the Cube -- but it does take advantage of a surprising amount of the iPhone's features. You can draw the colors on the virtual cube yourself, or even take a picture of your cube's sides and the app will recognize where the colors are. The latest update adds support for non-standard cubes, so if the colors aren't quite the same on your cube as on the screen, you can change things around.

Impressive, even if it is a little limited in practicality. It's in the App Store right now for 99 cents. Obviously, the point of a Rubik's Cube is solving it yourself. And if you really want to cheat, you don't need an iPhone. Just do what I do: take the little stickers off and replace them in the right places.

iPhone OS 2.2.1 Hints at Next Gen iPhone?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

MacRumors is reporting that both the recent iPhone OS 2.2.1 release, and ad serving reports from Pinch Media show an iPhone model 2,1. The original iPhone was 1,1, the iPhone 3G was 1,2, so if accurate this numbering would not indicate the small bump of the iPhone 3G, but a real next generation device update (similar to the recent, revised iPod touch, which earned it’s own 2,1 model last fall).

So, TiPb’s just gonna keep on saying it: we want us some iPhone HD this June! With faster 802.11n mobile WiFi chips, quad-core cpu’s for iPhone 3.0 that support OpenCL and a PowerVR graphics core to the extreme.

Anyone else starting to get impatient for WWDC 2009?

iPhone OS 2.2.1 Hints at Next Gen iPhone?

Next-gen iPhone evidence lurking in latest firmware?

Posted on by Chris Ziegler.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Could Apple possibly be working on another iPhone? Well, yes, of course -- but Mac Rumors may have stumbled upon the first solid evidence that there's a major hardware revision in the works (and no, we're not necessarily talking about the nano). Seems that the latest firmware revisions have some juicy metadata buried deep within that refers to a product code of "iPhone2,1" -- a decidedly higher number than the "iPhone1,2" representing the current iPhone 3G. What's more, an ad network is reporting web hits from an iPhone2,1, so it looks like this is very much the real deal; only question is, just what the heck is it?

TiPb iPhone Live-Cast!

We kick off the next iPhone Live! tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 28) at 8pm EST/5pm PST. (Pre show will start about 10 min. before if you want to drop by early!)

This week we’ll FINALLY get into some iPhone vs. Palm Pre (technical and legal!) action with Smartphone Expert’s editor-in-chief — and resident Palm expert — Dieter Bohn who was live at the keynote and got quite a bit of hands-on time with the Pre at CES. Is it better? Can it compete? How will Apple answer? Or will those multi-touch patents stop Palm dead in their tracks?

(We’ll also cover iPhone OS 2.2.1, what it might mean for Jailbreak/Unlock, and catch up on Apple’s iPhone numbers from last week’s conference call).

AT&T loving the iPhone

AT&T has released fourth quarter and 2008 results and it's not all roses for the telecommunications giant. Wireline telephone subscribers were down significantly, and AT&T has spent a bundle (US $453 million) upgrading the 3G network to serve the iPhone and their other Smartphone offerings. The bright spot for AT&T is the iPhone itself, which contributed to very positive gains in subscribers and revenue. Even with the boost from our favorite phone, AT&T profits fell to 64 cents a share in the fourth quarter compared to 71 cents one year ago.

Here are the interesting iPhone stats:
  • AT&T activated 4.3 million iPhone 3Gs since it came on the market including 1.9 million in the fourth quarter alone. Those activations are more than double the number from a year before with the 2G iPhone
  • iPhone owners provide about 60% higher revenue than other AT&T customers
  • About 40% of fourth quarter activations of iPhones were customers that were new to AT&T. Most came from other carriers like Sprint, Verizon, etc.
  • Customers who drop AT&T aren't usually those with iPhones (although many iPhone users would like to because of bad coverage or service).
For just about anyone selling anything, the fourth quarter of last year was dreadful. The iPhone was not exempt from this trend. Activations were down 21% comparing the fourth quarter to the third quarter of 2008, but the iPhone still clobbered the Blackberry Storm.

AT&T Still Rolling in iPhone Dough: 1.9M iPhone’s Activated in Q4

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

AT&T Mouth of Sauron Speaks!

AT&T reported on their own quarterly earnings today, the highlights according to Fortune (via MacRumors):

  • AT&T has activated 4.3 million iPhone 3Gs since its launch, 1.9 million in Q4 alone — more than double its iPhone activations one year earlier.
  • The average revenue from Phone users is 60% higher than the typical AT&T customer — thanks to that $30 per month data fee. Their heavy use of Web services helped drive AT&T wireless data use up 51.2% year to year, which as reader Jon in Brentwood, Calif., points out is not necessarily a good thing.
  • About 40% of the iPhone activations this quarter were new AT&T customers, either buying their first cellphone or switching from another carrier.
  • The churn rate — the percentage of customers who drop AT&T’s service — among iPhone owners is significantly lower than the rest of the network, sharply reducing marketing costs.

They also note that 1.9 million iPhone 3G’s activated in its second quarter on the market is nearly double the 1 million BlackBerry Storm’s activated by Verizon in it’s debut quarter…

Apple vs. Palm: the in-depth analysis

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_vs_The_Palm_Pre_PATENT_WARS';
Apple and Palm kicked a lot of dirt at each other last week -- acting Apple CEO Tim Cook flatly told analysts that "We will not stand for people ripping off our IP" when asked specifically about competition like the Palm Pre, and Palm responded with a similarly-explicit "We have the tools necessary to defend ourselves." At issue, of course, is that the Pre employs a multitouch screen and gestures almost exactly like those made famous on the iPhone -- and if you'll recall, Steve Jobs introduced multitouch on the iPhone with a slide reading "Patented!" To top it all off, the past few days have seen a number of media outlets proclaim that Apple's been awarded a "multitouch patent" without so much as a shred of analysis, instead hyping up a supposed future conflict. That's just not how we play it, so we enlisted Mathew Gavronski, a patent attorney in the Chicago office of Michael Best & Friedrich, to help us clear up some of the confusion and misinformation that's out there -- read on for more.
