Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXV: the world-renowned GiPhone F5

Whoever put together GiPhone F5 seems to have done a pretty good job of mimicking the iPhone's UI, but other than that the deets are rather sketchy. This bad boy seems to be a 3G handset with a capacitive 3.2-inch multitouch screen, Bluetooth, "kinds of games," and up to 16GB internal memory. Sounds wonderful, sure, but don't give up your HiPhone just yet -- we're still trying to figure out where this one is available, and at what price. Video after the break.

Review: Krusell Hector Leather Case for iPhone and iPhone 3G

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.
Categories: Uncategorized.

I’m a big fan of not using a hard case as doing so hides the beauty of the iPhone. So I tend to look for pouches, sleeves, and sometimes leather cases. Enter the Krusell Hector Leather Case for the iPhone and iPhone 3G which happens to be available in TiPb Store for $29.95. I’ve spent a good amount of time using this case, so read on for the full review!

Design

Lets start out by saying when you first see this case you probably won’t come away that impressed. But after a closer look at this side case, it might just make you change your mind. The first thing that you’ll notice is how the Krusell Hector Case is built out of a very soft, high quality leather. A lot of leather holster cases out there are very stiff but that is not the case with this Krusell. It is by far one of the most subtle leather cases that I have personally come across in a very long time.

On the inside, Krusell has lined it with a soft suede leather. So there is absolutely no reason to worry about this case scratching any part of your iPhone. On the outside, you have a magnetic flap keeping your iPhone securely in place along with an open slot underneath so you can push up to get the iPhone out with a great amount of ease.

On a negative front there is one thing that I found to be missing… a normal clip. All you get here are belt loops… More on that later.

Daily Use

Like I mentioned, I’m a big fan of not hiding my iPhone 3G in any way, shape or form. When my phone is not in use and is in my coat pocket or pants pocket it is always in one of my pouch cases to be kept well protected. So giving a new case like the Krusell Hector a try was a very welcome opportunity.

Right away I could not help but notice it’s one and only major flaw. It only has belt loops and it omits a regular clip! Seriously? While this may work for some of you, it is something that I just could not get past. When my iPhone is not in use it stays protected, whether it’s sitting on a desk, table or whatever it may be. In order for this to happen with the Krussel Hector case I would have to undo my belt. Not very convenient in my honest opinion.

Another gripe about the lack of clip is what if you don’t wear a belt one day? It pretty much renders this case useless. So note to non-belt wearers out there: This may not be the case for you.

Now for all of your who like having your iPhone attached at your hip all day long. This may just be the case you’ve been looking for.

When it is attached to a belt, it is actually more sturdy than a normal clip, which leaves you with less of a chance of actually leaving your device behind for someone else to pick up. That is obviously a plus. While wearing the Krusell on your side you will notice that it is reasonably comfortable and eventually you forget it is attached to your side. It’s also important to note that removing your iPhone is also a piece of cake. So no worries there.

Conclusion

The Krusell Hector Leather Case for the iPhone and iPhone 3G, available at TiPb Store for $29.95, is a good side holster case with one major drawback. Yes, you guessed it. The lack of a normal clip. Now if you are the type of person who likes to keep the case attached at your hip for your entire day, I suggest you give this case a try. You will not be disappointed in it’s build quality. It is very well crafted and it suits it’s purpose well.

Pros

  • Superbly built with high quality leather
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Does a good job of protecting the iPhone while holding it securely

Cons

  • Lack of removable clip!
  • Did I mention belt loops only?

Man Gets Slapped With a $28,000 AT&T Wireless Bill

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Could this be a sign of things to come with tethering and the iPhone? Will all of us who own iPhones be vulnerable to these overages if we choose to start using software like the upcoming SlingPlayer Mobile?

A Chicago man (Jamesus — hoping it was not you, buddy!) decided to watch a Bears game via Slingbox on his laptop before leaving for a cruise… Harmless enough one would think, but his AT&T wireless data card decided to pick up a international signal while he was still in Miami… end result: A $28,067.31 bill for international data charges. It’s safe to say the data card was picking up the wrong signal and with a few customer service calls he eventually did get the charges dropped down to $290.65.

So all of you travelers out there, take heed if you are traveling on a fringe area take all precautions to avoid something like this happening to you…

Happy 54th Birthday Steve Jobs!

What do you do if you helped commercialize the home computer with the Apple II, made the GUI mainstream with the Mac, laid the foundation for many aspects of modern computing at NeXT, revolutionized the music industry with iPod and iTunes, changed the consumer electronic retail experience forever with Apple Stores, and restore innovation to the smartphone space with the iPhone? And… oh, yeah, sidelined in a little 3D paradigm shift in entertainment via Pixar?

Well, if you’re one Steven P. Jobs, and it’s today… Boom! You celebrate your 54th birthday.

On behalf of everyone here at TiPb, we wish you peace, prosperity, health, and happiness. Have a great birthday — you’re not quite done denting our universes yet!

Apple Releases Safari 4 Beta: What Does it Mean for iPhone Safari?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Apple has just released the first public beta of their new Safari 4 web browser for both the Mac and Windows (the Windows version now looking like an actual XP or Vista app). New features include an iTunes/Finder-like CoverFlow visualization for exploring browser history, and Apple TV commercial-esque visual wall of Top Sites (which should cause the same potential pr0nbarassment for some as Chrome and Opera’s “favorite” visualizers in the past), the ability to search, spotlight-like through past sites, Chrome-style top-mounted tabs, robust developer tools… and most important for the iPhone and iPod touch’s future — the new Nitro Engine for screaming fast JavaScript rendering.

Yes, JavaScript engines are the new speeds and feeds. Bottom line, the more script, the slower and heavier the site. Hey, BlackBerry still turns JavaScript off by default on the Bold and Storm to get anything approaching decent rendering speeds. But with Google’s V8 and Firefox’s TraceMonkey helping push the technology — not to mention every Web 2.0 site ladling on the AJAX — we’re going to need all the power we can get, especially on the iPhone.

As for the rest: CoverFlow already works well on the iPhone, though I’m not sure we need it in Mobile Safari, and the smaller screen might make Top Sites a little too tiny to be useful. And the search? Heh. We still need Spotlight on the entire iPhone, so how about we get that rolled up together?

Anything else you want to see in Mobile Safari 3.0?

First Look: Fliq Docs

In early January, TUAW featured a face-off between Fliq for Mac and Mobile DropCopy. At the time, I noted that Fliq for Mac and Windows was better in terms of moving content created on the iPhone (address cards, notes, photos) to a Mac or Windows PC, while Mobile DropCopy was better for viewing or moving other content such as Microsoft Word documents or PDF files.

About six weeks later, Mark/Space has responded by not only updating Fliq to version 2.0, but also releasing a new free iPhone application called Fliq Docs (click opens iTunes). Fliq Docs requires Fliq 2.0 for Mac or Windows (US$19.95, free upgrade for registered users of Fliq 1.0, or US$9.95 to owners of any Mark/Space Missing Sync application), and is a full-featured document viewing and transfer application for iPhone. Click the Read More link to find out more about Fliq Docs.

Sneak peek look at Cha-Ching for iPhone

Posted on by Cory Bohon.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Many Mac users have been using Cha-Ching to manage their bank accounts for some time. The guys at Midnight Apps are at it again, and this time their money management software is on the iPhone.

Just like the Mac version, Cha-Ching mobile allows you to create multiple account and manage your budget, schedule payments, and add payees. Probably the most amazing feature is the ability to sync all of the data from the Mac version of Cha-Ching wirelessly to your iPhone/iPod touch.

When you tap on the Budget icon in the toolbar, you have the ability to see at a glance your current budget. At the top is your overall budget showing how much money you have left on a scale. If you tap on the Budget icon a second time, a history of your budgets for each month will come up. When you're ready to set your budget, tap on "Edit" at the top. You can add or remove categories in the app settings.

New to Cha-Ching is the scheduler section of the app. In this area, you can easily track upcoming bills. You can set the frequency, amount, category, account to subtract it from, and any notes that you might want to include.

Cha-Ching mobile is also location-aware. When you add a payee you can have the app remember the location. When you sort by locations, the nearest payees will show up near the top. This is a great way to track your payees based on where you are. The app will also remember the category, location, and other details about the payee; this makes creating new payments simple because most of the details will be automatically filled in for you.

In the settings section, you can easily see all of your accounts, set user-created categories, secure your Cha-Ching app with a 4-digit passcode, sync with Cha-Ching 2.0 on your Mac, and set scheduler options.

Cha-Ching mobile should be on the App Store soon. It has a sale price of $2.99US. You can visit their teaser page for a quick movie demo of the app.

iPhone to Geo-Tag Other Cameras?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Apple’s new iPhoto 09 will use the geo-tag data recorded by the iPhone 3G’s camera to map out the locations of your pictures. But what if you’re no using the iPhone for all your pictures? What if you have a regular old point-and-shoot or even a DSLR without GPS? One approach would be to use a stand-alone GPS to record your position and then cross-reference the time-stamp on your photos to add in the location data later. And, hey, the iPhone just happens to have that GPS, and it looks like a control panel found by TidBITS (via Ars Technica) in iPhoto 09 hints that Apple might be adding that functionality in the future.

Since recording Geo-Tag information would require some form of GPS running in the background, we may not see this until a future iPhone firmware update, perhaps 3.0 in June?

Still, it’s nice to see more clues as to just what Apple might be considering…
