We've made no secret of our love for the Boxee media center. Its lovable interface works great from 2ft. to 20ft. and covers just about everything an HTPC should on both the Apple TV and Mac mini. Now, after weeks of being in review, the folks over at the Boxee blog have finally announced the availability of the Boxee remote app (iTunes link). It's extremely affordable for everything it does (it's Free) and is available immediately. If you've lost your Apple remote, or for whatever reason don't have (or want) one, Boxee's remote app is a pure gem. Check it out now and then give Boxee some suggestions on how they can improve it.

TUAW @SXSW Interview: Pangea Software CEO Brian Greenstone

Pangea Software have made some of the most successful and fun software for the Mac. Games like Cro-Mag Rally, Nanosaur and their most popular title, Bugdom, have propelled them into the upper echelon of Mac game developers. More recently, Pangea is making games for the iPhone and iPod touch and have, in fact, made the decision to develop for those devices exclusively.

I sat down with Pangea's CEO Brian Greenstone during SXSW to talk with him about his favorite games, making games for the iPhone and why he thinks its easier to make games for the iPhone and iPod touch.

CHRIS ULLRICH:
Hey Brian, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. First question for you about games on the iPhone is why the iPhone?

BRIAN GREENSTONE: Originally I chose the iPhone because i wanted to see my games on a mobile device. For years i had been trying to get my games ported to Gameboy or something and companies would always say they would do it then it would never happen. They would just vanish.

I just wanted a mobile version of a game so the iPhone came along and I decided to do a couple games for it. I didn't care so much if we lost money, i just wanted to do it. Of course it turned out well and now its what we do full time.

CU: You're focusing exclusively on the iPhone now?

UPDATED: iPod shuffle Signaling Apple Switch to Locked-Down Headphones?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

UPDATED: ZDNet retorts, and says to chill.

ORIGINAL: iLounge (via Engadget) is reporting that the new iPod shuffle ships with headsets that not only include advanced (read: complicated) on-wire controls, but with lock-down chips that may prevent third parties from making compatible alternatives without ponying up licensing fees to Apple. Whether this is a money grab in exchange for technology Apple has patented and feels they deserve compensation for, or just another internet controversy that ultimately goes nowhere isn’t fully understood yet (least not by me!). iLounge says:

This is, in short, a nightmare scenario for long-time iPod fans: are we entering a world in which Apple controls and taxes literally every piece of the iPod purchase from headphones to chargers, jacking up their prices, forcing customers to re-purchase things they already own, while making only marginal improvements in their functionality? It’s a shame, and one that consumers should feel empowered to fight.

When the iPhone 3G came out, there was some noise that the new component and composite video cables that came along with it contained proprietary chips that would prevent 3rd parties from creating cheaper alternatives to the Apple-proper cables.

Launched along with the 2nd generation iPod touch was Apple’s new in-ear headset with mic and remote control, allowing music to be started, stopped, and skipped, along with volume to be controlled right on the headset. They worked not only with the iPod touch, but with the new aluminum unibody MacBook family, and to a lesser degree with the iPhone 3G. Was there a proprietary lock-down chip in those headsets?

Either way, are we sharpening our pitchforks and lighting our torches, or waiting to see how this develops before storming the streets of Cupertino?

Around SPE for 15 March, 2009

Posted on by Dieter Bohn.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Welcome to Around SPE, where we highlight the big news of the week from around the network in a format that’s more than just a list-o-bullets. This week we’re putting the spotlight on Android Central, which saw a fairly hefty redesign on Wednesday night. Search, registration, commenting, navigation, the whole shootin’ match is all much improved.

We’re also proud to announce that Android Central made a donation to Olin College to help students there develop mobile applications (with a special focus on Android, naturally). You can find out more information about the class here, or better yet — go check out the applications already in development this early in the semester!

In Android news, we caught word that Amazon was selling the Black G1 for a measly $97.99. Then it got even better with Costco offering the G1 for $79.99, a whole $100 off! Why the discounts? Recession? Pressure from the HTC Magic? Finally, the long awaited Cupcake update is supposed to come to Android by April. Paid apps came to the UK Android Market. And we wondered whether the T-Mobile G2 (aka HTC Magic) was going to show up at CTIA.

Now for the roundup of the week’s news from our other SPE sites!

CrackBerry.com

As we march through March, the BlackBerry world is yet again in a state of anticipation. On the app side of things, Facebook users are waiting for version 1.5 to be released, which thanks to a leak over the weekend many device owners running OS4.6 are already taking advantage of. RIM also promised that we’d see the rollout of BlackBerry App World this month, which should happen at CTIA in the weeks ahead. On the device front, CDMA users are getting stoked over the BlackBerry “Niagara” 9630, which must be getting closer to an official announcement as even more device photos have hit the net. And in the area of entertainment, Vodafone and McLaren got together with a couple of F1 & BlackBerry Storm fans to put out what has to be one of the sweetest pieces of corporate viral advertising to hit the interwebs in a while.

Nokia Experts

When Matthew Miller isn’t busy appearing on the radio to talk about Nokia, he’s keeping a close eye on Nokia’s doings in the US. The latest: Nokia still doesn’t seem to have worked out a solid strategy for a US invasion. Their big Comes With Music announcements and new music-centric phones all seem pointedly not bound for US release. Could US carriers be giving Nokia the brush-off because they’re not interested in giving up any potential revenue to the Scandanavian giant? (signs point to yes). Regardless, the future Symbian roadmap should hold our interest even if US Carriers are yawning.

(Also: belated happy birthday and get well soon, Matt!)

PreCentral.net

This past week Palm pulled in enough cash to survive through the Pre launch amidst a PR mini-assault that included both a call in to Howard Stern and a yawner of a webinar. We did manage to glean some info from the presentation, however, including the details on Sprint’s Palm Pre service planes and a look at a browser that appears to be 4 times faster than the iPhone’s.

Oh, and did you see the Palm Pre appear on Jimmy Fallon?. We did and let us tell you, it was the perfect antidote for having to watch Palm backtrack on Roger McNamee’s Palm Pre Hyperbole.. Hey, nobody’s Prefect.

The iPhone Blog

Previously on theiphoneblog.com: Apple’s iPhone 3.0 Preview Event kicks off this Tuesday, March 17 at 1pm EDT/10am PDT. TiPb will be providing live meta-blog coverage, so be sure to check the front page and join us. Rumors include MMS, Tethering, also new SpringBoard (home screen app launcher), Cut and Paste, Push Notifications, and Compass functionality, and a Premium App Store for +$20 apps. Be sure to hit our iPhone Forums and let us know what you want to see in iPhone OS 3.0!

Meanwhile Apple updated us to iTunes 8.1 with iTunes DJ, and debuted a new iPod suffle. The App Store rejected Tweetie 3.1, a Twitter client, but then changed their minds. And Google shut down Infinite SMS.

TreoCentral

TreoCentral and its sister site PreCentral.net reported that Palm announced they were exercising their right to remarket about 18.5 million common shares underlying 49% of the units of Series C preferred stock and warrants acquired by Elevation Partners in January 2009. Plus, the underwriters will have the right to purchase an additional 2.8 million common shares from Palm to cover over-allotments, if any. TreoCentral also talked about the 8K SEC filing (warning of lots of risks) Palm did to accompany their announcement.  Dieter and Mike talked up lots of interesting Palm stuff in their latest PalmCast, Episode 61, including their eulogy to the PalmOS, chatting about Roger McNamee’s hijinks, and the Sprint Treo Pro and Internet Explorer Mobile 6.

WMExperts

We ended the week at WMExperts with a full review of the all new consumer-level smartphone on AT&T, the dual-sliding Matrix Pro.  The Matrix might not be the device for power-users, but it’s an interesting form-factor (and solid upgrade) for consumers. Our real excitement, though, was the announcement that GrandCentral has returned as Google Voice.

Slightly bigger news for WinMo fans is that Microsoft has announced developer details surrounding Windows Marketplace and the details are good, but not jump-out-of-your-chair great. Check out our podcast for some analysis.

Can we expect these Palm Pre like features in iPhone firmware 3.0?

iPhone 3.0 to have copy and paste, Pre-like features — but no background apps

Posted on by Nilay Patel.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Digg's Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass -- you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that's great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won't have support for background apps -- which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone "up to speed with the Palm Pre" a little suspect. We'll find out what's what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

Cut and Past! Palm Pre-Features! No Video! No MSS! Kevin Rose Diggs iPhone 3.0 Rumors!

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Kevin’s back. Back again. Digging iPhone rumors. Tell ya friends! Not iChat Mobile this time, unfortunately, but Gizmodo is reporting that during his SXSW live Diggnation, Kevin Rose - who’s flubbed almost all iPhone rumors, but nailed iTunes and iPod nano scoops — put it on the line again for iPhone 3.0 pre-Preview Event:

  • Cut and paste (as previously rumored) using double-tap to zoom and activate, pinch boundaries, then options pop up.
  • “Palm Pre” features. (Could that be integrated social network contacts, unified messaging, better notifications, multi-tasking?)

Also, what will NOT be included?

What do we think? Will Rose be right or wrong this time? Tuesday’s just under two days away!

iPhone at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2009 Roundup

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

South by Southwest (SXSW) 2009 is trendy, twitter-filling, and the source of increasingly social iPhone news releases. What’s going on this year?

FaceBook connect comes to the iPhone. Sure, they may just have redesigned their home pages to basically become Twitter with invitations to apps you don’t want and events on continents you can’t attend, but behind the scenes:

You can now use Facebook Connect on your iPhone in the same way you can for a website. Simply download any application featuring Facebook Connect and log in using your Facebook account from your iPhone. Then, you’ll be able to easily find your Facebook friends. They will be able to see the same profile information as they can on the site, controlled by your privacy settings. You can also share what you’re doing with your iPhone applications with all of your Facebook friends by publishing stories back to your profile.

Pelago has launched Whrrl 2.0:

an application for the iPhone that enables people to capture and share the moments of their lives, as they happen, as a story. Through location, photos and text updates, users can easily turn everyday life experiences into lasting stories that can be remembered, organized and shared. Each user controls exactly who can view their story, ranging from public to private, and includes the option to broadcast status updates on Facebook and Twitter.

SGN Launched Agency Wars, a game tied into — you guessed it! — social networking and Facebook connect!

Agency Wars is capitalizing on the classic spy genre and offeres massively multiplayer game play so you can become the most deadly spy around.

TUAW is also live and on location at SXSW 2009, and have posted up coverage of the iPhone Gaming Panel.

Apple iPhone 3.0 Preview Event — Live Meta-Blog this Tuesday!

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Just making it official folks: Join me along with our editor-in-chief, Dieter Bohn, and as many of our writers, fellow editors, and friends who can make it, for live meta-blog coverage of this Tuesday’s Apple iPhone 3.0 Preview event.

We’ll kick things off just before 1pm EDT/10am PDT with color, commentary, and you comments. We likely won’t get the actual firmware for download until later this summer, but we’ll get a chance to see what we’ll be getting.

Those who remember this time last year, at the iPhone 2.0 preview event, Apple focused first on ActiveSync, 802.1x, Cisco VPN, remote wipe for Enterprise, then shifted into the SDK and games like Super Monkey Ball, and social networking apps like AIM with the first hints of what became the App Store.

What will Apple have for Enterprise this year? Is it still a focus? How about the SDK? What will be new for developers? And App Store, will it go Premium? And what else will we get?

Join us in just over 48hrs to find out!
