We mentioned in passing during our pre-iPhone 3.0 rumor round-up that:
G-Maps has mysteriously disappeared from the App Store, and will “return soon”…
While XRoad’s website said the US East and West coast maps were being improved, the real reason speculated at the time is that they were perhaps about to re-appear as a full turn-by-turn navigation solution as part of the Premium App Store. Neither of those things happened, and now Gizmodo shares what might really have been going on:
Update: Some developers have told us that the reason G-Map has been pulled is that by including turn-by-turn navigation, it violated the terms of agreement—which is why it was the first turn-by-turn app to come out.
Of course, the App Store terms of service have now changed, allowing for turn-by-turn as long as the developer “brings their own maps” so we’ll have to keep an eye on this one and see what happens come “summer” and the official iPhone 3.0 release…

G-Map Pulled from iPhone App Store
We can’t use the picture Gizmodo used to headline their post, so we’re retreating beneath the wholesome banner of Megan Fox for this one (blink blink). Suffice it to say, mixing and matching from their Gawker Media heritage, Gizmodo asks the adult-content question:
Can the new OS make the iPhone the best sexual toy ever?
Exploring the new iPhone SDK’s rumble API, along with peer-to-peer, voice, proximity sensor, and other freshly unveiled functionality, they get as close to porny with it as possible before retreating to the scholarly comfort of Dr. Debby Herbenick, who inspired by one of their previous posts, offers them her iPhone sex guide (also NSFW) in return.
It’s doubtful what exactly would make it through the App Store approval process, but hey, we’re sure iBackMassagerWeSwear is already in the pipeline, right?

Well we all you that this day would eventually come. BGR is reporting on March 26th AT&T will begin to offer the iPhone 3G with a no-commitment price as well as no in-store activation. Something to keep in mind, this all comes to us at a very steep price of $599 for the 8 GB and $699 for the 16 GB with a few strings attached.
AT&T will only sell you “one per line”. So with that in mind, don’t go into the store without a current AT&T phone line and expect to walk out with a shiny new iPhone 3G because that is not going to happen. These iPhones are only being sold to current customers that meet the following criteria:
AT&T is restricting the No-Commit price to existing customers who wish to add a line, purchase as a gift, or upgrade and not eligible for the Qualified or Early upgrade price.
So, at those steep prices and restrictions do you think these bad boys will sell well? It’s pretty safe to say this is not a move to make inventory room for those “new” iPhones that Rene is wanting in the worst way…

Apple’s Senior VP for iPhone Software, Scott Forstall, said that Apple had already built Tethering into the iPhone software, shuffling the burden of “where the heck is it then?” neatly into the hands of the still-waffling carriers.
Well, according to MacRumors, an enterprising developer has gone and shown us that Forstall wasn’t just spinning tales. Tethering (where your laptop connects to the internet via a USB or Bluetooth connection to your iPhone) really is already built in there.
Of course, with the way the iPhone brought down AT&T’s network at SXSW last weekend, the thought of millions upon millions of iPhone users burning even more data must have AT&T execs quivering in their boots… Will they actually improve capacity before allowing it on their end, and how much of that will be pushed down to the user via Tethering “plan” increases?
Would you rather have cheap but unreliable Tethering, or would you pay more for rock solid service? Or do you just want all these heavy duty data users to get off your 3G lawn?
