iPhone OS 3.0: Encrypt iPhone Backups in iTunes 8.1

Posted on March 19, 2009 by Rene Ritchie.

iPhone OS 3.0 is the gift that just keeps on giving, this time revealing features in iTunes 8.1 we hadn’t seen before. Now, when you hook an iPhone running the 3.0 beta 1 software up, under the Summary tab you have a new option: Encrypt iPhone backup.

Checking off the option opens a pop-up window for you to enter your password.

We’re not sure yet what form of encryption Apple is using, though the Steve Gibson is us hopes it’s something with a really, really strong security focus. Especially for those in enterprise or government who might have a need for it.

(And when the time comes, using a really gnarly password like the kind GRC.com’s perfect passwords generates would be a great idea for the truly security conscious.)

Blizzard releasing Mobile Authenticator for iPhone, iPod touch

Blizzard is one of the biggest software developers in the world -- they're behind some of the most popular games of all time, including the Diablo series, and of course their legendary MMO World of Warcraft (full disclosure: I'm a senior editor over on TUAW's sister site about that game, WoW Insider). And they've always been Apple friendly -- while other developers complained that it wasn't worth porting their software to the Mac, Blizzard has always released both Mac and PC versions of their games on the same disc, and made sure there was quality on both sides. But they've never dipped their toes in iPhone development -- until now.

WoW Insider has found a posting over on Blizzard's site that suggests they're planning to release an app called Mobile Authenticator. They've released a piece of hardware called the Authenticator before -- it pushes out a code according to an algorithm that keeps players' accounts secure when they sign into the online game. And this app will serve the same purpose, but it'll likely run on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Nothing's appeared on the App Store yet, and this app hasn't even been officially announced (so no word on price or release date -- the hardware authenticator runs $6.50, but obviously there are material costs involved there). But Blizzard has been looking for ways to make their games and players more secure, and it looks like they're turning to Apple's iPhone and other mobile devices to do it.

iPhone 3.0: Notes Sync (Finally!)

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

When Steve Jobs first showed off the iPhone at Macworld 2007, and told the world that it would sync data via iTunes, Notes Sync was one of the items listed on his Keynote slide. Meanwhile, over on the Mac side, Apple shipped OS X 10.5 Leopard, and the desktop Mail app popped up a warning about syncing Notes to the iPhone.

This probably led you — as it did us — to believe the original iPhone on OS 1.x would sync notes.

Ha! As if! When iPhone 1.0 arrived in June 2007, Note Sync was MIA, as it was when iPhone 3G dropped in July 2008. Fast forward to iPhone 3.0 Preview in March 2009, however, and — finally — Notes Sync is in the house.

All that remains to be seen is whether or not it survives the beta and is released for everyone this “summer”.

That, and Tasks and Task Sync. Ahem.

Apple to partner with LG on OLED-equipped iPhone, netbook?

Posted on by Ross Miller.

A new rumor from SmartHouse is making the rounds today, with alleged sources claiming LG has partnered with Apple to make OLED displays for a new iPhone and iPod touch, a Taiwan-manufactured netbook that's reportedly already in working prototype stage, and a device with a wafer-thin screen that would link wirelessly to a content-providing box similar to Apple TV. Sure, some of that makes sense, but let's add a good bit of context here. This article in question was written by SmartHouse veteran David Richards, who in the past has brought us such winners as PlayStation 4 launching in 2008, a Xbox 360 equipped with HD DVD, and our favorite, Apple producing its own soap opera series exclusively for the iPod. We're not saying the Apple-LG partnership is entirely out of the realm of possibility, but this guy doesn't exactly have the best track record. Furthermore, this doesn't jibe with two separate reports from Dow Jones Newswire and Commercial Times / DigiTimes that Quanta is providing the screens for an upcoming Apple netbook launching in Q3. Lastly, with today's announcement that LG is licensing Kodak's OLED technology for future devices, we get the feeling the company isn't the best suited to meet Cupertino's demands. Seems like this week's barrage of Apple news has gotten to people's heads, honestly -- keep a sharp eye!

AT&T confirms contract-free $599 / $699 iPhone 3Gs for next week

Posted on by Chris Ziegler.

Just in time to nab your soon-to-be-jailbroken copy of iPhone OS 3.0, AT&T has now confirmed that commitment-free iPhones are going to happen -- soon, in fact. As of next Thursday, you'll be able to waltz into the AT&T store of your choice and pick up an 8GB or 16GB unit for $599 and $699, respectively; that's a little harder to swallow than the normal $199 / $299, granted, but in exchange, you're free and clear without two years of your precious life sold off to a wireless carrier like it's a cheap piece of meat. You're worth more than that, you know?

Apple Releases HD Movie Purchases in iTunes

Posted on by Dieter Bohn.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The word has gone out: Apple is now allowing you to do more than just rent movies in HD, they’re letting you buy them. You’re looking at spending a bit extra for the HD version - $19.99 to be precise. They’re pushing preorders for a few movies (Quantum of Solace and Twilight) but there are also a few you can buy right now (Saw V, for example. Sadists rejoice!).

The movies also come with an SD version bundled in for your iPhone and iPod. Which is great and all, but how’s-about Apple provide us with an iPhone that doesn’t need such primitive down-scaled resolutions. iPhone HD looking more likely to anyone? If it comes, we’re still doubting it would be the 720p that these videos come in (our money’s on iPhone HD with 480p), but it would be a sight better. We’re still hoping against hope here, but maybe 2009 could be the true “Year of HD,” …4 years late, but still very welcome.

iPhone 3.0 beta firmware FAQ

Posted on by Ryan Block.
Categories: Uncategorized.

While most people would probably agree that 3.0 doesn't represent a revolutionary upgrade for iPhone users, it's still large (and interesting) enough to warrant tons of questions, which we've been collecting to answer in a FAQ about the beta. Feel free to submit some more below! Just remember that just about anything can change between now and the final launch of 3.0 -- it is a beta, after all.

So, how do I get this thing?
Well, unfortunately you need to be part of the developer program (which costs $99).

Whatevs, I just got it off of BitTorrent!
Okay, but it may not work. Your iPhone's unique ID must be authorized for the 3.0 upgrade, and Apple checks that. So until someone cracks the 3.0 beta firmware image, you have to be a registered developer, or know somebody who can hook you up, pretty much.

How did installation go? From Miqal
Running it on a non-jailbroken device, it went smoothly. Took about as much time as your traditional restore. Just be warned: from what I've been hearing, once you go to 3.0, you can't go back to 2.0. (Apple must have changed some of the baseband firmware or something, no real surprise.)

How's performance been? I heard it's really sluggish.
Actually, it's been pretty good for me so far! Spotlight is actually faster than I expected and the rest of the common interactions feels the same as 2.2. I'm going to continue to keep an eye out for issues, but so far things have been humming along nicely. [Interestingly, Nilay, Ross, and Chris have all reported occasional slowness, proof that Ryan's zen-like patience is a virtue. -Ed.]

Do all of your apps sync? Do they work okay? From Kwarren and davidiom
So far, yes, I haven't seen anything really go missing. 3.0 isn't a fundamental architectural change, so I don't think most apps need to be re-worked to function. Granted, there have been a few apps which have definitely given me some trouble when running in 3.0 (like the Peanut Butter Jelly Time! app -- don't you judge me), but so far I've run into very few problems and apps have been working mostly without much issue. As always, with something like this your mileage may vary.

More magic for the iPhone

Posted on by Mel Martin.

The iPhone and iPod touch have really attracted a lot of interest from the magic community, and we've reviewed some of the tricks you can get at the App Store here, and here, and here.

Now things are getting more serious with the release of a DVD set called 'Magic with the iPhone' ($19.95 U.S.) created by Magic City in California, a large distributor of magic effects to pros and semi-pros.

The 2 DVD set consists of 12 tricks you can do with your iPhone. One disc is a standard DVD which demonstrates the magic, and then explains how it is done. The second disc is a data DVD, which has picture and movie files that will set your phone up to do the trick. The package even contains a gimmick used to turn a penny into a dime.

Like any collection, there are some strong effects, and some weaker ones, but most people will easily find 3 or 4 that are worth doing. In general, the effects are more polished than many of the tricks in the App Store, and the video instructions are more detailed.

Stand out effects in my view were iHotrod, where a spectator chooses a color at random from 6 colored dots, and that turns out to be what you predicted in an iCal entry on your phone for the current date and time. I also liked Telecommunications, where someone selects a card, then calls a contact in your address book, and the person called tells the spectator exactly where the card is in the deck after it has been shuffled. It's a clever diversion, and should stun your audience.

The disc is not sold by Magic City, but they distribute it to magic dealers and novelty shops. Here is a Google search that should help you find a copy.

Magic City has also just released a second DVD of iPhone tricks. I did not think it was as strong as the first volume, and it tended to repeat the same card finding methodology over and over again.

Gerald Kirchner, who created the DVDs says the products will be available at Blockbuster and from Netflix in mid April.

I think the first DVD is worth a try if you are getting more serious about magic. Instead of carrying around a lot of props and equipment, you only need your iPhone and a deck of cards.

It's amazing how a device that was intended as a phone has branched off into specialty areas like magic, medical technology, astronomy, photography and music. That is the true magic of the iPhone.

iPhone OS 3.0 firmware unearths new iPhones and new iPod touches?

Posted on by Chris Ziegler.
Categories: Uncategorized.
We'd already heard that evidence of a new iPhone model was found buried in newer firmwares, but how about two new iPhone models -- along with a couple new iPod touches thrown in for good measure? It seems that a careful deconstruction of the beta 3.0 build provided to developers this week has uncovered the same product code "iPhone2,1" found before in addition to an even newer, awesomer "iPhone3,0." For the record, the iPhone 3G is identified as "iPhone1,2," so these alleged new models would be the first in the iPhone line to be blessed with major version number increments. Turning our attention to the iPod touch, the current model carries the "iPod2,1" designation, but models "iPod2,2" and "iPod3,1" have both been rooted out of the binary. June is widely speculated as the time that we'd be seeing new iPhone models -- right about the time that 3.0 is released to the general public -- so we don't have terribly long to wait to get this sorted out.

Mobile OS shootout: iPhone OS 3.0 enters the fray

Posted on by Joshua Topolsky.

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Engadget_s_Full_Comparison_of_iPhone3_0_to_Other_Mobile_OS'; As soon as Apple rolled out its preview of iPhone OS 3.0, the comparisons to existing (and forthcoming) mobile OSs started flying. While the major update isn't exactly a done deal, it's pretty far along, and we've been able to glean quite a bit from our time with the developer beta we've been checking out. iPhone OS, Android, webOS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, S60; if you're in the market for a new smartphone, your choices have been getting exponentially more complicated lately, and 3.0 won't make the selection any easier. Luckily for you, Engadget is here to make sense of a frightening and uncertain landscape. Read on for an in-depth look at the similarities -- and differences -- between modern mobile operating systems.

Dept. of “That Was Awfully Quick”: eager devs enable tethering on iPhone 3.0

Posted on by Michael Rose.

When something so appealing as the possibility of wireless Internet access anywhere you go is dangled in front of you, is it any surprise when you reflexively reach for it? After developer Steven Troughton-Smith inadvertently turned on the tethering controls on his upgraded-to-3.0 iPhone, several people made a deliberate effort to enable the feature. Posts on personal blogs and at the MacRumors forums testify to the successful quest, and there's a specific walkthrough posted and a UK-specific IPCC file kicking around.

Of course, it goes without saying that tethering your phone, in the absence of a carrier contract that permits such connectivity, is the sort of thing that may get you in a spot of trouble. Examples of such potential hazards include extremely large data bills, summary termination of your account, or hair on your palms. While jailbroken phones have been tethering for some time with few issues, past performance is no guarantee of future outcomes.
