Shock! Disbelief! Big Music Price Hike Makes Tunes Less Popular!

iPhone vs. Big Media

I bought a bunch of music on April 6th at $0.99 in advance of the April 7th variable price shift. (Unlike Amazon and Walmart, Apple pre-announced the new pricing back in January). Now much of the music I bought, including many old, no longer popular tracks, is listed at $1.29. Looking at those prices today, I admit they make me think twice about buying again. According to Billboard (based on Gizmodo), I’m not the only one feeling that way:

One day after the price jump, there were 40 $1.29 songs in the Top 100, and 60 at 99 cents. The $1.29 songs fell an average of 5.3 places, while 99 cent songs moved up 2.5 places on average. The total average chart drop of pricier songs since the prices went up is about three places.

Unfortunately, Big Music is still making more money total on less sales of higher priced tracks, so they may not care. Historically, they’ve shown zero foresight when it comes to pricing themselves to compete with “free” pirated music, which was the whole crux of Steve Jobs’ iTunes pitch to begin with. See Rolling Stone from 2003:

We don’t see how you convince people to stop being thieves, unless you can offer them a carrot — not just a stick. And the carrot is: We’re gonna offer you a better experience … and it’s only gonna cost you a dollar a song.

Also still unexplained is where all that $0.69 music is that we were told would more than make up for the price hike on the higher end.

What do you think? Will you buy less music at $1.29 than you would have at the old $0.99 price point? Or is $1.29 a fair, modern market price for your favorite tracks?

Attack of the iClones: No ZunePhone but… ZunePod touch HD?

Personally, I still think Microsoft’s only hope at this point is an XboxPhone, but what do I know, I don’t run the largest, richest, most talent-laden software company in the world… that runs itself, and everything it produces, into the ground due to paralyzing politics and committee. So, excuse me if I’m nonplussed by the rumors of a new Zune HD, which while not an iPhone clone, or even an iPod classic or nano clone, looks to be positioned exactly opposite the iPod touch. A strategy which has proven so successful for Microsoft thus far…

Dear Steve Ballmer: Please, scorch the earth, start from scratch. Stop worrying so much about Apple and Google and start investing in Microsoft. Start making wonderful experiences for customers all your own. Build an integrated ecosystem from the ground up where Server, Windows, Xbox Windows Phone, and Zune all share a single unified brand and delightful cross-compatibility. Take a lesson from Palm. Spend your years in the desert if you have to, but at least walk in a single, considered direction.

Apple Store Finally Dumping WinCE-Inducing Payment Systems?

iPhone Business Model

Yeah. Apple Stores use what appear to be Soviet-era Windows CE handsets from Symbol to process credit card transactions on the floor. It’s their secret shame. All that beautiful, elegant, perfectly balanced mobile technology in the iPhone and the iPod touch and their front-facing staff is stuck using devices straight out of 1960s garage sci-fi.

Well, the times they may finally be changing. Apple Insider reports that:

Instead of introducing a dedicated [point of sale] sibling to the iPhone and iPod touch family, Apple instead worked to expand the iPhone platform to suit the needs of developers. With iPhone 3.0, that includes new support for working with peripheral devices over USB through the Dock Connector and wirelessly using Bluetooth.

Seems Apple will be transitioning to an attachment for the iPhone or iPod touch that lets them replace their aging WinCE fleet with their own, homegrown, multi-touch tech. Win/win for both marketing and sales.

The only question left for us is, what to do with all those about-to-be-obsolete WinCE boxes?

Bluetooth 3.0… in Time for iPhone 3.0?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

iPhone 3G uses Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, but it seems like the folks behind the BT standard are ready to release the next big version, coincidentally sharing the same 3.0 version number as the next iPhone firmware update, coming this summer.

There’s been no word on Apple adopting Bluetooth 3.0 for iPhone OS 3.0 or the next generation iPhone hardware expected to be previewed at WWDC in June, but according to BGR, it will be landing on April 21st and will enable:

Ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless technology to achieve transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps. No, seriously. Higher transfer speeds are actually achieved by enabling 802.11 standards when heavy lifting is involved and then switching back to an older, slower standard when big transfers are completed.

Of course, Apple’s track record when it comes to BT is not good, so there’s no saying whether or not they’ll make the jump to Bluetooth 3.0 now… or wait for 2015 to roll around…

CNBC: Apple beating recession

Posted on by Dave Caolo.

A panel on CNBC's Fast Money was recently remarking on AAPL's apparent invulnerability to the recession that's currently affecting the United States, noting that it's jumped 40% so far this year, outperforming the NASDAQ. J.P. Mark of Farmhouse Equity Research suggests that the excitement that persists among Apple's retail employees customers is a part of that performance.

As for the stock's immediate future, the panel and Mr. Mark point to this summer's concurrent release of iPhone OS 3.0 and a likely new iPhone model as a powerful stimulus. Finally, Mr. Mark notes that it isn't often that an electronic gadget becomes more useful and valuable over time.

I definitely agree with that. My iPhone is now almost two years old and it does much more than it did when I first opened its box. Also, if a new iPhone does appear this summer just as my current contract is expiring, I'll almost certainly buy it.

TiPb Picks of the Week: LogMeIn, Masters Golf, TwittMS, Delivery Status touch, Surf Report

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game.

So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break!

Chad’s Pick: LogMeIn Ignition

I use LogMeIn for my Mac and PC already and this app for iPhone makes LogMeIn that much more useful. This is the BEST option out there that I have tried for remotely accessing your desktop. [$29.99 - iTunes link]

jamesus’ Pick: The Masters Golf Tournament

For those who follow golf, this is a great free app that gives you the leaderboard, couse video flyovers and streaming video from Amen Corner. [Free - iTunes link]

msbaylor’s Pick: TwittMS

An application that turns your Twitter account into an SMS-like application I never really thought of Twitter as using it as an “SMS” app, as for one, the interface didn’t feel right. But this application takes care of that. It acts just like SMS but with some cool features. [$1.99 - iTunes link]

Rene’s Pick: Delivery Status touch

Nothing’s more difficult than waiting for that glorious new box from Apple, but having an app — that doesn’t require a web registration — to count down and keep track of it’s progress helps. A little. [$2.99 - iTunes link]

Special Guest Pick from CrackBerry Kevin: Surf Report

Of course there’s no actual ocean nearby Winnipeg for me to get a surf report on, but it makes me feel less depressed about the snow outside knowing there are places in the world where people are actually surfing right now. Oakley’s Surf Report warms me. [FREE - iTunes link]

A billion iPhone apps downloaded. Coming soon.

Could it be Apple has delivered almost a billion iPhone/iPod touch apps (both free and paid)? The answer is a definite yes, and Apple has posted a page counting down (or counting up, really) to the big event. As I write this they're at 928 million apps and change.

It's an amazing number, and Apple is celebrating the event with a contest. Fill out a form, no purchase required, and have a chance to win a $10,000US iTunes gift card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro. Apple will let you enter up to 25 times a day (!) until the billionth app is sold. Gee, I could use an app that could automate all those entries.

Apple also has a link to the top selling free and paid apps (link opens iTunes). FYI, the most popular free apps are Facebook, Google Earth and Pandora. The most popular paid apps are Crash Bandicot Nitro Cart 3D, Koi Pond and Enigmo.

When Apple hits that billionth app it will be a big deal, and stand by for a big blast of publicity and commentary. It will also spark more conversation about the copycats who are jumping in the pool at Microsoft, RIM and Google (Android).

Congrats Apple. How long will it be before you hit 2 billion?

RIM Steals Microsoft’s Stolen Apple Designer to Create “New Experience” — VistaBerry Cometh?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

No, we’re not talking about Bono. Sigh. We’re talking about Don Lindsay, who was, according to Apple Insider:

Design Director of the Mac OS User Experience Group, he led what was called the “Mac OS X interface concept project” and directed the design team responsible for the user experience of Mac OS X 10.0 “Cheetah” through Mac OS X 10.3 “Panther,” which included the company’s first-generation of iLife digital lifestyle applications.

From there he was hired away by Microsoft to create — wait for it! — Vista. More specifically, AERO Glass, Flip3D, and Windows Calendar. Redmond start your copiers, indeed.

So what do you get if you copy a copy? Aside from artifacts and banding galore, RIM’s new VP of user experience, it seems. There’s only one problem with this, of course, and it should be obvious to RIM or to anyone who’s seen Vista or the Star Wars prequels.

Great artists need great editors. The best kindergarten teachers know when to pull the paper away from the kids. Steve Jobs is a great editor, a great kindergarten teacher. Word is he would scrutinize the UI down to the pixel level.

Hiring the guy who was already hired away by the other guy doesn’t give you the iPhone. It gives you the Storm. And RIM already learned how that worked out. Vista on the Storm… Good luck with that.

If you’d like a better idea, instead of trying to get the guy Microsoft got from Apple, and trying to dupe the dupe that is Vista, find someone new. Find something new…

Think different!
