(MLB At Bat 2009 Forum Review by cjvitek For more Forum Reviews, see the TiPb iPhone App Store Forum Review Index!)

Okay, I admit it, I am a die hard baseball fan. One of the first apps I bought last year was MLB At Bat, and when I heard it was coming out again, after a brief period of annoyance, I decided to purchase it again.

On a side note, I expect to see many more subscription based or “partial” purchase based apps with the new pricing methods in the app store. I don’t think it bodes well.

But anyway, I decided to get the app when I saw that this year it included the MLB Audio - radio broadcasts of the games. As a bonus, you get to choose the stream to listen to!

So how does it stack up?

I must say, very well.

When you start the app, you are presented with a screen showing the days games. The current score and inning are listed, and if you click on a game, you get a short highlight summary at the bottom of the screen (how many outs, who is pitching and batting, on base, etc). You can scroll through the various games. When a game is highlighted, you can click on “audio” and choose from either of the teams radio stream to listen to the game. Unfortunately, you can’t have it in the background (curse you iPhone) so you need to stay in the application in order to listen to the stream. If you click the blue arrow, you are taken to what I call the “game” menu.

The game menu is broken down into a variety of screens. The first one, gameday, shows you the current batter, pitch by pitch (with location) action of what is going on. You can also see the fielding situation (including dimensions for each stadium), the box score, the game summary, and of course video highlights (just like last year) by selecting the various tabs at the bottom. The video highlights are supposed to be better quality this year, but I always look at them when I am connected via wifi, so I have no problem with the quality. I wish they had more highlights to choose from (it seems that they are moslty focused on big hits). The video is not HD quality or like watching a movie, but it certainly is okay to watch for a ten-second highlight.

Back on the main screen, there is an additional button for “extras”. With Extras, you can look at additional MLB videos (like “A look at the ballparks of the last decade” and fantasy updates”). You can also look at the up to date standings, legal information, or be taken to the MLB.com website in safari. I wish they have other information like leaderboards, player stats, matchup information. It is all available at MLB.com, but I would think it would be easy to have it in the app itself (especially since if you leave the app, the audio stream is lost).

Out of curiosity, I tried watching the game-day play by play, watching a game on TV, and listening on the radio, just to see how it synced up. The radio had the longest lab, the TV was the fastest, but evne then it was only about one pitch behind.

Pros:

  • Audio!
  • Gameday effects are nice,
  • lots of options for “in game” status

Cons:

  • Lacking some basic statistical information,
  • some video highlights seem to be sparse (for some teams)

Conclusion

All in all, for baseball fans on the road, this is almost a must-have app. The price ($9.99) is not cheap, but it is very reasonable compared to what they charge for Gameday audio online. I wish they have video highlights for every half inning or so, rather than just having (at times) one or two per game. I also wish they have more reference and statistical information. But this is a great app for following a team when you are on the road - just make sure you have your car charger! Most of the stuff I found lacking were things that don’t really detract from the app, but rather things that would put the app over the top.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCIX: NokiPhone N3000i dual slider is one part N95, two parts iPhone, and six parts win

Combining two pretty great ideas in a way that is all kinds of illegal in the US, the China-produced NokiPhone N3000i looks to be a pretty straightforward iPhone ripoff with bonus N95-esque dual slider capabilities. The GSM smartphone's got 3.2-inch QVGA screen, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, dual SIM support, microSD slot, and video recording capabilities. Price of admission is $129 right now, which according to chinagrabber is a hefty discount from its $400 MSRP. Your move, NOKLA.

First Look: Camera Zoom for iPhone

The iPhone's built-in camera is a prime target for improvements. We've seen iPhone cases with built-in wide-angle lenses, iPhone cases with zoom lenses, and a plethora of apps to manipulate photos. Camera Zoom (click opens iTunes) is a new US$0.99 app from KendiTech that provides a 4x digital zoom for your iPhone camera.

Camera Zoom displays a preview in real time, just like the regular camera app. You use a slider to adjust the level of zoom. After taking the photo, Camera Zoom tweaks it for the best possible quality.

For those of us with "real" digital cameras, the ability to zoom the iPhone's camera is nice. However, the picture quality of a digital zoom is never as good as you'll get with an optical zoom lens. As you can see with the example photos above, the zoomed image tends to be grainy. This is particularly true in low-light conditions. If you can put up with the degraded picture quality, Camera Zoom is an inexpensive way to add zoom capabilities to your iPhone.

I'm surprised that Apple approved this app, since the icon is titled "Camera" just like the real Camera app, and it duplicates the functionality of the Photos app as well. The latter isn't done very well, since you can't flick the screen to move between pictures in the camera roll.

This is version 1.0 of this app, however, and it's a good start to what could be an easy-to-use photo manipulation tool for the iPhone platform.

iPhone to run Boston Marathon

TUAW regulars probably remember our post about a reader in Tokyo who strapped an iPhone to his hat and used Qik to livestream the Tokyo Marathon. Well, now we're about to see an iPhone run the Boston Marathon.

It's a very large iPhone with a developer inside! RunKeeper developer Jason Jacobs has battled plantar fascitis and a short training season (three weeks) to hopefully carry off this great marketing scheme on Marathon Monday. He's wearing a lightweight iPhone suit made of black lycra with a rope frame. What's on the screen of the iPhone? RunKeeper, of course!

The staff at Fitness Keeper worked with a team of students from Professor Dave Gerzof's social media class at Emerson College to come up with a marketing strategy that would give their popular exercise tracking app an extra push in the App Store. On Monday, we'll see how well an iPhone can run the Boston Marathon.

There's more of the story as well as video at http://www.runkeeper.com/marathon. Good luck, Jason!

First Look: NIN: Access for iPhone

Earlier this week Nine Inch Nails released NIN: Access [iTunes link], an official iPhone app for the band's website. Although releasing an official band-branded mobile application isn't an entirely new idea -- Death Cab for Cutie [iTunes link] released an app earlier this year and Snow Patrol [iTunes link] released an interactive booklet for their latest album back in October -- NIN: Access goes a step further by bringing the community experience of the nin.com website into the mobile app.

A few weeks ago, Wired previewed the app and interviewed Trent Reznor and his long-time collaborator Rob Sheridan about its development.

Playing with the app (check out our gallery), it's clear how much focus was put into not only integrating the app with the existing nin.com site, but also enhancing and building features that make for a satisfying mobile experience.

Users (you can either sign-in with an existing account or create an account directly from the app) can access music, videos, wallpaper and images from the vast official archives or fan-uploaded content. Thanks to a GPS and Wi-Fi locating tool, fans can communicate with other fans using Nearby, which is like Twitter but localized to the Nine Inch Nails network. Think of it like Twinkle but for NIN fans.

Uses can also access the forums and read the latest news of of the official NIN news channel.

Although I had a few instances where the app crashed on me (and I'm using an iPod touch 2G 32 GB, I'd imagine crashing is even more common for iPhone and iPhone 3G users), the overall feel was solid and the interface was top notch.

Videos load in the external YouTube app, while songs and fan and official remixes play within the app itself. Playback was just fine over WiFi, but support over 3G may vary.

All in all, Trent Reznor and Co. have really gone the extra mile in creating a community-branded official application. If you're a fan of NIN, this free app is most definitely worth checking out.

NIN: Access is free and available in the App Store.

New Apple Patent filed hints at video chat once again

A new Apple patent on a motion-aware iPhone user interface points again at the possibility of a front-facing video camera for video chat in next generation iPhones. One that won’t require the 3G videoconferencing kit. This could be huge for meetings, dating, all kinds of as yet undiscovered applications. The new patent describes a morphing interface [...]

Hulu coming to the iPhone?

Silicon Alley Reporter notes that, according to a well-connected industry executive, a native Hulu application for the iPhone is coming soon (within a few months) and is reported to support streaming content over wifi and 3G. The source was also cited as saying that the app is "badass."

Other video streaming applications for the iPhone (UStream, Joost and i.TV, to name a few) have met with, at best, mixed user reaction. Considering that Hulu is currently riding atop the throngs of sites offering mainstream television and film content online, expectations for this new offering will likely be quite high. Coupled with the recent rumblings regarding AT&T's supposed unwillingness to fully embrace this type of content delivery over its cell network, it's probably safe to say that Hulu on iPhone will be in the news again (and, perhaps, again) before the app sees the light of day.

We'll keep you posted if we catch wind of any new developments with this application, but for now, we'll play the waiting game.

Infamous Safari Security Cracker Finds Vulnerability-ish in iPhone OS?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Very little code is bullet-proof. Hackers will always find holes. The worst holes will be critical. The worst hacks will be zero-day and found in the wild — catching companies and users both by surprise.

Not sure we have any of that here. Macworld does report that, at the Black Hat Europe Security Conference, former NSA number cruncher Charlie Miller — who has rolled his ability to find exploits in the Mac version of Apple’s Safari Browser into tens of thousands of dollars and a couple free MacBooks at the annual Pwn2Own contest — claims to have:

…found a way to trick the iPhone into running code that enables shellcode. To run shellcode on an iPhone, however, an attacker would first need a working exploit for an iPhone, or a way to target some software vulnerability in, for example, the Safari Web browser or the mobile’s operating system. Miller said he doesn’t have one now.

Miller previously gained attention for a Mobile Safari exploit that made for some quick early jailbreaking and led to Apple patching the problem in firmware 1.0.1.

What’s particularly disturbing, however, is that Miller also says he’s unsure whether or not Apple knows about the potential vulnerability.

He should know that absolutely dead cold, of course. He should have told Apple long before he made the information public, and only made the information public when Apple had a fix rolled out or ignored his warnings for so long that public pressure could reasonably be considered the only option in getting them to roll out a fix.

Either way, Miller should know that Apple knows because he told them first. Or do we no longer warn people in a house when we see a potential fire starting, but wait and see how much attention and cash we can get for the info first?

iPhone Hulu App: The Next SlingGate?

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Rumor is that Hulu is working on a application that will be available in the App Store sometime in the near future. Silicon Alley Insider has learned about it from a “plugged-in industry executive” and it is said that the application itself will be as slick as Hulu’s website and it will work on 3G as well as WiFi. Judging from the popularity of Hulu and their really cool commercials, this app could be a huge hit.

This app coming to the App Store may seem a bit hard to believe at the moment based on the whole ordeal with SlingPlayer. Although, there are other apps within the App Store, such as i.TV, that actually stream video, granted the quality is poor. But full length TV shows and movies? Unfortunately, whatever is holding up SlingPlayer from becoming available still remains a mystery. Whatever the case may be, what are the chances of this Hulu app seeing the light of day? And what are the chances AT&T will really let it stream over 3G?
