iPhone App to “Bring the Rain” for US Military’s Networked Warfare?

Newsweek is reporting that the iPod touch (and presumably the iPhone, as they run the same software) is replacing more expensive, government-contracted handhelds as the “networked warefare” mobile device of choice for the US Military. Not only do soldiers often already know how to use iPods and iPhones:

Apple gadgets are proving to be surprisingly versatile. Software developers and the U.S. Department of Defense are developing military software for iPods that enables soldiers to display aerial video from drones and have teleconferences with intelligence agents halfway across the globe. Snipers in Iraq and Afghanistan now use a “ballistics calculator” called BulletFlight, made by the Florida firm Knight’s Armament for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Army researchers are developing applications to turn an iPod into a remote control for a bomb-disposal robot (tilting the iPod steers the robot). In Sudan, American military observers are using iPods to learn the appropriate etiquette for interacting with tribal leaders.

So, does this mean we’ll see full force iPhone hero shots in all the new Michael Bay movies from now on?

iPhone HD Rumblings Now on Cable? Replacing Apple TV?!

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

TiPb predicted an iPhone HD way back on October 10, and while not everyone — even here — agrees that we’ll see it, rumors continue to point that maybe, just maybe we will.

The latest comes via PhoneNews which reports that the Apple AV Cables, component and composite versions of which were launched last year alongside the iPhone 3G, are being cleared to make room for a consolidated cable. What’s more, this new cables, alongside an “iPhone HD” would support 720p or 1080i out (for your TV, not on the device itself).

A wilder bit of rumor postulates on an HD-out iPhone or iPod touch replacing the Apple TV. I’m not sure I see that happening. I use the current AV cables all the time when visiting friends and family, but tying my phone to my own TV wouldn’t be anywhere nearly as convenient. Buying a second, iPod touch class device wouldn’t really be cost effective compared to an Apple TV either, though would multitask better if you ever needed a second traveling device, I suppose.

If the iPhone itself gets a higher screen resolution as well, 480p (800×480) similar to last year’s HTC Touch HD would be the max we’d like see (or need) on device. HD aside, web browsing with that many more pixels would be very welcome.

(Thanks to IndyJonez on our forums for the tip!)

Engadget’s take on the new mophie Juice Pack Air

Blogger Darren Murph over at our sister blog Engadget has posted a hands-on review and detailed photo gallery for a new extended battery pack and case for the iPhone -- the mophie Juice Pack Air.

Billed as the world's lightest and thinnest extended battery pack for the iPhone, the Juice Pack Air will ship on Tuesday, April 21st, at a suggested retail price of US$79.95. It's available in the usual black and white iPhone colors, as well as purple for all of those Colorado Rockies fans out there.

The mophie Juice Pack Air (link to website) has achieved the Apple "Works with iPhone" certification, has a 1200 mAh Lithium Polymer battery to double your talk or play time, and even has an integrated 4-LED charge status indicator so you know when you're really going to lose all of your power.

Darren found that with the Juice Pack Air and iPhone mated, the total package is only .75" (19 mm) thick and adds just a tad more width and height. Whether or not that's worth it to you depends on just how much you use your iPhone.

Be sure to check out Darren's hands-on review and see if the Juice Pack Air is the battery for you!

Engadget's take on the new mophie Juice Pack Air originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 08:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

MeeHive delivers news to your iPhone and iPod touch that reflects your interests. But for a service so focused on the reader's interests, it's a bit disappointing to use an app lacking much in the way of customizable features.
