SlingPlayer for iPhone getting closer to release?

SlingMedia thinks so. In a brief note on the Sling website, the company notes: "We are in close contact with our partners at Apple and are optimistic that it will be approved soon. We hope the wait won't be much longer."

Hopefully the company knows something the pundits and rumor mongers don't. It's been a month of excitement followed by depression as lightly-sourced rumors spread that Apple would turn down the highly anticipated app at the request of AT&T, who worried about all the bandwidth the app would use. There was even a change in the AT&T Terms of Service, that the company later disowned and apologized for.

Of course other phones sold by AT&T and other carriers do offer the SlingPlayer Mobile app, but no other single phone has the footprint that the iPhone has.

There have also been rumors that the app might support WiFi only, which would be a tremendous downer for people who expected to be able to Sling away from just about anywhere. Hopefully, this whole soap opera is drawing to a close, but Sling fans shouldn't throw away their torches and pitchforks just yet.

Thanks to Matt for the tip.

Apple and Verizon in iPhone Negotiations for 2010?

USA Today revives rumors that Apple is considering bringing the iPhone to Verizon's network as early as 2010. According to "people familiar with the matter" high-level discussions were initiated between Apple and Verizon a few months ago and are co...

Apple, Verizon mulling iPhone deal for next year?

We've been down this path countless times, but rumors are once again heating up that Apple and Verizon are actively discussing the possibility of creating an iPhone to work on Big Red's airwaves, according to USA Today's infamous "people familiar with the situation." The juicy gossip claims that discussions kicked off a few months ago when Steve was still running the day-to-day show out in Cupertino, but that the conversation has continued in his absence -- and they'd like to get a product on the shelves next year, likely much to AT&T's chagrin. The article claims that this would be a CDMA product, but given that Verizon boss Ivan Seidenberg himself ruled out a CDMA iPhone and opened the door for an LTE one, we're inclined to believe that the carrier would like to see this product help inaugurate the first slivers of its commercial 4G network in 2010. Since AT&T (along with the rest of the world) is moving toward LTE, an LTE-powered iPhone is a forgone conclusion -- it's really just a question of when Apple will make it happen and whether Verizon will be able to seal the deal.

We’re pretty sure that if you’re reading this, you’re the sort who likes exclusive, breaking details on Smartphones. We had that aplenty this week. Nokia Experts got the full skinny on the AT&T Nokia E71x in the form of PDF guides and a confirmation of a May 4th release. PreCentral.net scored an internal head-to-head between the iPhone and the Palm Pre. CrackBerry.com saw yet another Storm OS leak.

We’re also pretty sure you like free stuff. So you’ll want to check out the What Would You Do for a Palm Pre Giveaway. We’re also incredibly proud that CrackBerry.com reached - wait for it - One Million Members! They’ll be tossing out celebratory gifts to them this week. WMExperts will be giving away a phone (check there on Monday). Also, did you know that The iPhone Blog is approaching their 1 year anniversary in a couple weeks? Expect some fun to happen there soon, too!

Much more more happened in the smartphone world, so as usual, we bring you our "Best of SPE roundup." Come take a look at what’s news!

Android Central

This week at Android Central, we detailed a lot of the new features that are going to come with Android 1.5. You can read about onscreen widgets, soft keyboards, and future-proofing Android applications. But as rosy as things are for Android, T-Mobile posted some bleak financial results for Q1.

One milestone to celebrate: the T-Mobile G1 hit 1 million units sold!

CrackBerry.com

It was a fun and eventful week at CrackBerry.com. 9530 Storm owners were happy because a new operating system leaked. The Skyfire web browser debuted in private alpha mode, which looks to show a ton of potential and feature improvements over the native web browser. The BlackBerry 9630 also may have a name - the BlackBerry Tour. And last but not least, CrackBerry.com hit a huge milestone on Friday - One Million registered members! You’ll want to check into CrackBerry.com this week for chances to win some great prizes in honor of the occassion.

Nokia Experts

A tipster sent in all of the PDF documents for the upcoming AT&T Nokia E71x, that included an image showing a 4 May release date. The Nokia Experts accessory store launched this past week so come visit if you have any accessory needs for your Nokia device. The Nokia 5800 was a popular device this week with another review and thoughts on why it is a fabulous Amazon Video On Demand portable player that makes it a standout from all other mobile operating systems. Don’t forget to download the free Nokia Messaging client for your 5800 too.

PreCentral.net

Perhaps you haven’t heard, PreCentral.net is giving away five Palm Pre Packs to the five people who submit the best “What Would You Do for a Palm Pre?” entries! The Pre Packs include the Pre itself, a $100 Amazon gift card, a Touchstone charger, a case, and a pair of Motorola S9-HD headphones. If you haven’t entered your idea, go do so now!. Of course, outside of our contest, we also broke the big story that AT&T is training their employees on how to knock the Pre down a peg. We saw the Pre appear in Playboy magazine and in the hands of Angelina Jolie, and another shot of the Pre in the wild showed a new YouTube app for the webOS.

The iPhone Blog

Previously on theiPhoneblog.com: Apple pwns the app market. 35,000 strong now, and over 1 BILLION App Store downloads. To celebrate, Apple gave away over $10,000 in prizes to… well, you’ll see. With a total of 37 million iPhone OS devices (including iPod touches) now on the market, 3.8 million iPhones sold just last quarter, 1.6 million of those activated on AT&T, 40% new to carrier, accounting for 75% of new monthly billings, there’s only one thing Apple pwns more than apps: AT&T.

Meanwhile, Apple just said “NO!” to cramped, terrible, junky netbooks and confirmed again Steve Jobs will be back at the end of June — which is not in time for the WWDC keynote.

TreoCentral

Checking in over at TreoCentral we learned that Palm has just lowered the price of the unlocked GSM Palm Centro to $199. You can get it in three colors: Ruby Red, Glacier White and Colbalt Blue. In other Palm news, their stock broke $10 on a day that the market was down, and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Vivek Arya upped his rating on Palm to Buy from Hold. Plus Arya thinks that Palm could ship up to 2.5 million Pre smartphones in the 2nd half of 2009 and as many as 6.2 million phones in 2010. We also learned this week that the Treo Pro is now available in Mexico through Movistar, Telefonica Mexico’s local carrier brand.

WMExperts

It was another relatively slow week in the Windows Mobile world. The HTC Touch Diamond got a couple of hotfixes, we saw a cool ultrasound-Windows Mobile rig, learned Swift and Swivel may one day come, saw the release of SPB Mobile Shell 3.0, and a couple of great reviews of the Touch Diamond 2. We also got a sneak peek of possible Toshiba phones and the Touch Pro 2.

Zebrawood case classes up the iPhone in old-fashioned style

Posted on by Andrew Wells.

This one-of-a-kind zebrawood iPhone case won’t protect your iPhone from shocks or drops, but it will fit your iPhone like a glove…that’s made of wood…and looks sorta like a zebra…also made of wood. It’s a little confusing, but the pic shows you what we’re talking about. It’s handmade too, so there probably aren’t a ton [...]

Apps for Less: BeejiveIM, WordFu, Enigmo

For those of you who are not familiar with our Apps for Less posts, they are simply a way for us to point out a few good applications in the App Store on sale or at a price that we feel is worth mentioning to our valued readers.

First up we have an Apps for Less favorite, BeejiveIM [iTunes Link]. This application has been spotlighted in Apps for Less 3 times with the price dropping as low as $9.99. We have some good news for you, BeejiveIM is once again on sale for the low price of $9.99. You may be thinking that the price is still too high but honestly, you will not find a better IM client on the App Store, plain and simple. So if you are looking for the best out there, this is the one for you.

Next up we have a good one for all of you Kung Fu + word game fans. WordFu [iTunes Link] is a dice-based word game that combines a Kung Fu theme with many elements of other popular word games. Your task is to assemble as many words from the given letters as possible. All in all it’s a fun game that is pretty simple to play and for the low price of $.99 can you really go wrong? Just keep in mind it is a limited time sale. The price will be increasing so grab it as soon as possible!

The last app we have for you today is a little game called Enigmo [iTunes Link]. Enigmo has been one of the most successful games within the App Store.

“Enigmo is the most unique game that you’ll find for the iPhone or iPod Touch. It is a 3D puzzle game where you manipulate slides, bumpers, and other pieces to control streams of flowing liquid. Liquids (water, oil, and lava) fall from “droppers” and will bounce around the walls of a puzzle. You move and rotate the various puzzle pieces in order to divert the flow of the falling droplets so that they can reach their target. The faster you complete each level, the more bonus you will receive.”

This is one great game with an even greater price. For a limited time you can now purchase this app for the cheap price of $.99! That’s $3.00 off the regular price so don’t delay!

Hopefully some of you can take advantage and get in on these deals before it is too late! Enjoy!
