iPhone 3.0: On-Device App Download from Multiple iTunes Accounts?

Posted on April 28, 2009 by Rene Ritchie.

We mentioned the new Store Setting tab just a short time ago. daveizzle on Twitter made the observation that this functionality makes it seem like you could theoretically sign into one account, download apps, sign out, sign into another account, and download apps from that account as well, all onto the same iPhone or iPod touch. Boom. Support for multiple iTunes accounts right on the device.

Why would that be interesting? Say your spouse had already bought a $9.99 app. App Store lets the same account re-download that app to the iPhone without a second charge, so it becomes a way to “share” applications (as long as you trust the person enough to put your iTunes password into their device). Another scenario would be a UK users wanting to download a US-only app. They could log into a US account, download the region-restricted app, then log out and log back into their own, local account.

Note: This has been possible all along via syncing from iTunes. Any apps downloaded from any account would transfer over to the iPhone. This merely extends the purchase and/or download process to the iPhone, further releasing iTunes tethered hold.

(Of course, since you can’t re-download music for free, and you can’t download movie or TV show videos directly to the iPhone, this pertains only to App Store content — likely to prevent Big Media heads from ’sploding).

iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 Notes Sync… Requires Mac OS X 10.5.7…?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 required iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release to install, and it looks like iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release requires… Mac OS Leopard 10.5.7 in order to sync notes now. Which, of course, is not yet available.

Previous iPhone 3.0 Betas have synced perfectly well under the current Mac OS release, 10.5.6.

A sign of 10.5.7’s immanent arrival? Perhaps. A more interesting question is what’s changed in note sync to require it where previous betas did not?

Updated: Some Registered Developers Reporting “Pink Screen of Death” When Installing iPhone 3.0 Beta 4?

UPDATE: Devs responding to @theiphoneblog via Twitter are reporting that, for them at least, the PSOD is temporary and/or goes away after a reboot. Let us know how it’s working for you.

ORIGINAL: Some of the comments in our recent iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 release post, purportedly from registered developers, suggest that at least a few installations are failing with the dreaded “pink screen of death”.

The PSOD was seen last year when, during the 2.0 Beta cycle, Apple was tardy with Beta 3 and the previous beta timed out. We’re not certain what’s going on this time. Developers and their iPhones have to be registered with Apple in order to properly activate. If the procedure Apple is using to verify registration has changed, or is otherwise failing for a percentage of developers, that could be annoying at the least, show-stopper at worst.

If repeated attempts are succeeding for you, or if you’ve found out anything else that’s getting things working, please drop a note in our comments or direct your fellow registered developers to the proper trouble-shooting resources.

Rumor: iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release Contains Obscure Reference to Blu-Ray?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

MacRumors, via a user in their forums, is reporting that iTunes 8.2 could have some Blu-Ray functionality? Check out their post for details.

Steve Jobs famously called Blu-Ray licensing a “bag of hurt” when asked about it previously, but there’s been some chatter to suggest licensing has been somewhat de-hurt-bagged recently. Still, Apple hasn’t announced any first-party Blu-Ray hardware, so we’re not sure what to make of this at the moment.

In any event, unless they start including iPhone-friendly “digital copies” for transfer directly from the BD disks, it won’t change things for our mobile devices anyway.

iPhone 3.0 Beta 4: Store Prefs, Camera Re-Takes

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

No sooner has iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 been released, then our tip-lines have been filling up with finds. So far the big news looks to be that that mysterious “Store” tap, icon-less and empty in previous betas, now sports user info.

Also, the camera is now polite enough to ask if you like the photo you just took and want to save it, or if you don’t and want a chance to re-take it. Note: we’re not sure about this change yet, it may only be implemented for MMS, and may have been around in previous betas (lots of maybes, we know, we’re trying to sort through everything as efficiently as possible.) If it is system wide, some of us will lament the loss of our ability to rapidly snap photo after photo without the interruption of requesters…

(Thanks Andrew and anons!)

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4, iTunes 8.2 pre-release now live

Just two weeks after the last revision went up, Apple's released iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 to the developer community alongside an iTunes 8.2 pre-release. No word yet on what has / hasn't been updated, but we do know the new iTunes is required to activate beta 4. More information as we get it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Update: We've toyed with beta 4 for just a few quick moments now, and naturally, the first thing we had to check out was that previously-empty "Store" settings pane. It's now populated, and it's mega-boring; all it does is allow you to sign in and out of your iTunes account, and while signed in, there's an Account Info button that lets you get booted out to an unstyled web page where you can view and edit your credit card information and the like. On the iTunes 8.2 side of things, we noticed that we were explicitly warned that the app would verify that our phone was activated for use with the beta firmware -- we don't remember seeing that before -- and the Gracenote legal mumbo jumbo in the About window now specifically calls out both DVD and Blu-ray metadata, which we're taking as a promising sign of playback support in the not-too-distant future. Thanks, David!

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 and iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release to Developers [Blu-Ray Evidence?]

Continuing a pattern of biweekly releases, Apple tonight seeded the fourth beta version of iPhone OS 3.0 to developers. Apple also issued a developer pre-release version of iTunes 8.2, which is required to activate the new beta. No ...

MLB is about to make a million dollars off an iPhone app

Lots of developers are saying that they can't sell their apps at $9.99 in the App Store, but Major League Baseball is apparently the exception -- the $9.99 At Bat app is not only gaining accolades from users, but it's selling like nachos at the ballpark, too: with 130,000 copies sold so far this year, MLB is about to break a million dollars in revenue, even after Apple takes its cut.

Pretty impressive for a pricey app. Of course, that's chump change when you consider exactly what MLB is dealing with -- the app integrates the Gameday Audio service, which sells for $14.99 on its own, and baseball's television and video content makes much, much more than a million dollars. The iPhone revenue, big as it is, is just a drop in the bucket for MLB, really.

But nevertheless, the MLB app stands out as proof that, even if you have to include exclusive live audio content from major sporting events around the country, it is possible to make an app that people will happily pay $9.99 for. Stands to reason that if developers can make their app at least as functional and useful as At Bat, they too can make a million dollars.

iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 Now Available to Developers

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

Like clockwork, Apple has released iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 along with iPhone SDK 3.0 Beta 4 to developers. This marks the 3rd consecutive alternate-Tuesday update following the original Beta 1 release. Beta 2 and Beta 3 were both heavily scoured by code-divers who discovered several new, as-year unannounced features (see our updated iPhone 3.0 walkthrough for more!).

Will Beta 4 be any different? We certainly hope not!

Note: We’ve gotten reports that developers must install the iTunes 8.2 pre-release before attempting to install iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4.

Also remember iPhone 3.0 is a real Beta intended for developers and testers, not for daily use on a primary phone. If you don’t need the beta, don’t install the beta, and for Jobsake don’t buy it off of eBay. Yikes!

(Thanks Danny, Andrew, and all those who sent this in!)

Vinyl record iPod touch app gives you the spins

Posted on by Laura June.

Vinyl has been on the verge of a big-time comeback for ages now (and for some of us, it never ceased to be the format of choice anyway), so we're pretty happy to see that even the land of zany iPhone / iPod apps is no longer immune to its charms. The spinning vinyl app by Theodore Watson makes use of the iPod touch's accelerometer to control the speed that the "record" is played at. The video (which is after the break) might make you a little sick when you watch it, but it sounds great. Analog rules, doesn't it?

Apple has announced that for the second year in a row — the second year iPhone development has been on the program — their annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) has sold out.

Last year Apple used WWDC to unveil the iPhone 3G and MobileMe, and give second-looks at iPhone 2.0 and App Store. This year, smart money is on the next gen iPhone and iPhone 3.0 software, with wild-cards in the form of a low-end iPhone and iTablet. Steve Jobs is not scheduled to be back in time, but we’ll continue to hold out hope for a surprise cameo appearance.

In related news, Apple is reminding developers that the deadline for Apple Design Award submission is May 4, so get those apps in soon!

Show off your hard work by submitting your iPhone OS or Mac OS X Leopard application to the Apple Design Awards. You can also demonstrate your ability to take advantage of early technologies by submitting a Mac OS X Snow Leopard or iPhone OS 3.0 beta application.

Attack of the iClones: Verizon not Getting iPhone, just Microsoft “Pink”?!

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

“Pink” iPhone Killers, from the folks who brought you “Blue Screens” and “Brown Zunes”. Mmm, taste that rainbow… Sigh. Maybe Pink is the XBoxPhone we’ve always dreamed of. Maybe it really is just a candy-coated Diamond 2 with pop-tart trademarks. Dunno. Nobody does. Giant mystery in puzzle pastry with enigma frosting. Until we know for sure, however, there’s no danger in speculating, is there?

WMExperts links to a Wall Street Journal story that makes it seem like something Microsoft and Verizon think could might possibly take on the iPhone with such killer features as “multimedia” and “App Store”.

Wow, never heard that one before.

(And really Verizon, you haven’t even gotten Apple to go out on a date with you yet and already you’re chatting up Microsoft? What happened to your “iPhone Killer” with Nokia…?)

Seriously, isn’t it time ya stopped skating to where the puck was?

Dial 9 is another smart dialer for the iPhone

Posted on by Mel Martin.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The number of dialers for the iPhone give a pretty good indication that this is functionality that needs to be built in. Last week we took at look at one clever dialer; here's another. The Dial 9 visual dialer [App Store link] has a nice GUI and a couple of clever features, all for a reasonable $2.99US price.

This dialer keeps track of who you dial, and what numbers you use, and offers you those smart choices when you are ready to contact someone. Dial 9 will automatically import any images that are associated with your contacts, and I was glad to see when I updated a contact with a picture after I installed Dial 9, the app picked up on that without any intervention from me.

When you tap on a contact, you can call them at any number they use, send an SMS, send an email, view the contact or edit it if you like, and show a map of where the contact is. The map is just a link to the maps app on your phone, and once you select that you have to navigate back to Dial 9 from the home screen (a limitation of the current iPhone software).

You can arrange the icons however you like, or have the app arrange them. You can display a first name, first and last, or just images, and can change the background colors, or have different themes for different pages.

This is far from the only dialer for the iPhone. I counted 22 in the store, last time I checked. Faces Visual Dialer is another option at $0.99 (on sale) that has similar capabilities. You'll find free dialers and pay dialers. Other apps mimic old style rotary dialers such as this one, and this one, while others support speech recognition like the AdelaVoice Dialer and VoiceBox Dialer (this isn't meant to be a comprehensive list, just some samples).

I liked Dial 9. It looked nice, and had plenty of functionality. Help files are included and it worked as expected. The only downside of this app, and many that are similar, is that loading time is too long. It takes about 6 seconds to launch, likely because it is updating my contact list and loading images. 6 seconds isn't an eternity, but it can seem like one when you are ready to call someone. It doesn't really save you any screen tapping -- if I use the iPhone contacts, or Dial 9, I am 3 clicks away from dialing in either case. It does save scrolling time though, if your contact list is large and your frequently called contacts are few. That's my situation... I guess I need more good friends.

Here's a link to a video if you want to see how it all works.
