Photogene is a photo genius for your iPhone

In my recent review of AutoStitch I mentioned Photogene [App Store] which is kind of like a miniature Photoshop for the digital pictures you take on your iPhone.

It has a boatload of functions, which will let you fix and enhance your digital images without having to offload them to another image editor on a Mac or PC.

Here's some of the functionality:
  • Enhance photos with color adjustment and sharpen tools
  • Crop and straighten photos
  • Add text balloons
  • Create a variety of frames
  • Adjust Histogram
  • Correct Gamma
  • Increase/decrease saturation
  • Adjust color temperature
  • Multiple undo and redo
The latest version, released earlier this month, includes support for OS 3.0, adds some new effects, and updates the GUI. Of course no iPhone app is going to replace Photoshop, but Photogene has seemed to capture the features that people really want in getting their iPhone photos in tip top shape for emailing or saving elsewhere. With the new 3 megapixel camera in the new iPhone hardware, Photogene will be even more indispensable.

Some of the icons are not obvious in function, but they are quickly learned. I would have liked to see noise reduction among the features, but the developer has created a separate app called NoiseBlaster [App Store] that removes noise from iPhone images. It's an additional $0.99, but I would have liked it included in Photogene.

Photogene works on the iPod touch as well, but you'll have to import images since the touch has no built in camera, at least not yet.

At US$2.99 it's hard to go wrong if you use your iPhone camera as much as I do.

AT&T’s iPhone 3G S Pre-Order Supply Depleted

Once again it seems AT&T’s lock down of the iPhone will be paying off in droves. It’s only been a few days yet AT&T has managed to sell each and every single iPhone 3G S that it had stored away for pre-orders. Any unlucky customer who places an order with AT&T after today will sadly have to wait an extra one to two weeks to get their hands on their new iPhone 3G S.

Now keep in mind, if did get your pre-order in on time with AT&T, you will still have to show up at 7:00 am on June 19th to claim your prize. After the pre-orders have been picked up, the remaining stock will go to all of the walk-in customers. Regarding Apple and their supply, there has been no word yet so you can try your luck ordering straight from Apple.

So to all of you who took the pre-order plunge, which route did you travel? AT&T or Apple?

AT&T’s iPhone 3G S Pre-Order Supply Depleted

AT&T’s iPhone 3G S pre-orders already sold out

Bad news for folks hoping a pre-order would save them from that yearly camp out in front of their local Apple Store: iPhone 3G S pre-orders have sold out, and folks who are making new pre-orders are being told that they'll have up to two weeks to get a phone. AT&T customers who do already have pre-orders in still have to line up at 7AM to nab a phone, but at least they've got a guaranteed phone, while the rest of the world will have to battle over remaining stock when Apple Stores open at 8AM and AT&T stores open to general customers at the same time. Looks like we might get a good riot or two out of this.

iPhone users are richer, younger, and perhaps even more productive at work than those who use competing smartphones, according to a new study released Friday. The study from independent market analysis company Forrester Research suggests iPhone users comprise the elite upper class of smartphone customers. The data was compiled from 32,228 working U.S. adults in 2008. [...]

How To: Force Quit in iPhone 3.0

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

With iPhone 1.x and 2.x, you could hold down the Home button to “force quit” an application (kill the process) and return to the Home Screen. With iPhone 3.0, however, holding down the Home button now activates Voice Control on the iPhone 3G S.

So, how do you Force Quit under iPhone 3.0? iPhonejunkie3 provides the answer (via EverythingiCafe):

To force quit an application in 3.0, press and hold the sleep/wake button until the slide to power off screen appears, then press and hold the home button until the application quits (about six seconds).

Yes, this does indeed mean holding down Home is now useless on iPhone 1.x and 2.x, but that most likely will only affect jailbreakers and others who have specific reason for not upgrading. Everyone else gets a slightly more complicated, but still functional, Force Quit.

Apple iPhone 3G S Mailer

Last Monday, during the WWDC 2009 Keynote, Apple introduced the iPhone 3G S, the “S” referring to the speed (we’re hoping for screaming fast). If the amount of news it’s generated is any indication, we’re all going to have a hard time keeping up. In an effort to help out, here are some highlight of TiPb’s iPhone 3G S coverage:

Twitpocalypse Now’ish — Is Your iPhone Twitter Client Safe?

Twitpocalypse.com defines the event as:

similar to the Y2K bug. The unique identifier associated to each tweet has now exceeded 2,147,483,6471 [...] For some of your favorite third-party Twitter services not designed to handle such a case, the sequence will suddenly turn into negative numbers. At this point, they are very likely to malfunction or crash.

Here’s how it may be affecting some of your favorite iPhone Twitter clients:

  • Tweetie: No official word, but users indicated it’s experiencing pain in searches.
  • Twitterrific: Currently experiencing problems after a preventative update wasn’t enough to avoid the great doom. Second update in the works per Icon Factory.
  • Twitterfon: Unknown, if you have word, let us know.
  • Twittelator Pro: Took counter-measures in last update, current status unknown. If you have word, let us know.
  • Twitkitteh: Is, apparently, unaffected.

If you notice your favorite Twitter client misbehaving, drop a comment below or let us know via @theiphoneblog and we’ll update.

Apple.com iPhone Help and How-to

Apple.com has posted up a large menu of help and how-to articles for the iPhone 3G S (and a few features aside, the iPhones 2G and 3G as well).

Reader Kagan, who sent in the tip, points out that if you dig through the contents, you find little gems like 11 home screens allowed with iPhone 3.0 — which we saw in the beta, but is nice to get official confirmation.

If you find any gems of your own, send them our way!

Inside the New iPhone 3G S Processors: More than Just Mhz

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

iPhone 3G S Speed

Anandtech gives their usual in-depth look at the processors inside Apple’s new iPhone 3G S. First the CPU, the new ARM Cortex A8 and the short of it is — if the iPhone 2G and 3G were old 486 PCs, the iPhone 3G S would be a Pentium:

Anandtech iPhone vs. iPhone 3G S CPU

As for the GPU, the PowerVR SGX — even if it’s clocked down to half-speed, it’s rendering geometry 3.5x faster with a fill rate 25% higher as well:

Their take away? Well, they say the iPhone 3G S packs a similar hardware punch to the new Palm Pre, but while webOS uses some of that power for 3rd party multitasking, Apple’s “highly optimized software stack” will bring the speed.

And that only scratches the surface. For the gritty details, check out the full article.
