Palm appears to be giving tacit approval to groups trying to hack the Palm Pre and Palm's new handset operating system -- a sharp contrast to Apple's relationship with iPhone hackers.

Support for MMS messaging will be included in iPhone OS 3.0, which is launching this Wednesday, June 17 as widely reported. Unfortunately, AT&T will not have its network ready to provide MMS service [...]

Documents To Go for the iPhone is in the App Store now, and priced very nicely during a ‘Grand Opening Special’ that should attract a lot of eyes to the product. For 2 weeks only, you can get it for just $4.99. That’s a lot lower than I, and probably many others, expected out [...]

Tap Tap Revenge helps to introduce push notifications to the iPhone?

Posted on by Maggie Mills.

Tapulous has issued an update to their Tap Tap Revenge rhythm game which includes working push notifications, despite the fact that iPhone OS 3.0 isn’t officially available for two more days. It certainly isn’t the most creative use of background notifications (the messages only pop up when you’re challenged by another player), and we’re already wondering [...]

OS 3.0 compatible apps already trickling in

Some of our readers have informed us that Tap Tap Revenge (iTunes store link) has been updated to version 2.6, boasting compatiblity with iPhone OS 3.0. This is most likely merely the first of many apps that will see updates in the coming weeks, but it's interesting that Tapulous has unleashed this update so far in advance of OS 3.0's release.

If you are running OS 3.0, upon launching the new version of Tap Tap it will ask you for permission to send push notifications to your device. If you allow them, a new category called Notifications will appear in your device's main settings, which will allow you to toggle push notifications on or off. Additionally, it appears that each app will have individual settings for badges and alerts.

It's not likely that Tapulous will be sending any push notifications just yet, as Apple has yet to throw the novelty-sized Frankenstein knife switch to activate push services. It's also unclear at this point what type of push services Tap Tap Revenge may offer after that switch is thrown. It is an interesting preview of things to come, however.

iPhone 3G S pre-orders start shipping, reservations estimated in the hundreds of thousands

Posted on by Paul Miller.

We've got a number of tips this morning about lucky iPhone 3G S pre-orderers getting shipment notifications from Apple. Naturally, with a high profile launch like this we're guessing Apple has done all it can to ensure shipments won't slip through earlier than the June 19th launch date, but hopefully at least few folks will get lucky -- and at least they've got one of the only guarantees of a launch day phone going. In other news, an anonymous Apple Store employee has done some homework and tallied up average reservation numbers at other US stores -- he estimates about 800 people on average are on the reservation list per Apple Store (ranging from a couple hundred to well over a thousand), which amounts to about 200,000 reservations as of now, a number he believes could double before launch. There's no way to back that number up, but it sounds fairly rational. Finally, the iPhone 3G S firmware download link has made its way into the wild. Sure, it doesn't do you any good if you don't have an iPhone 3G S, but we thought you just might want to know all the same.

[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

AT&T Reminder: No Extra Charge for iPhone MMS

iphone_30_mms

TiPb is constantly receiving the big question regarding AT&T and MMS - will there be an extra charge for it? The answer is a simple no. The better question would be - when will we actually see it?

Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle.

Now “later this summer” can literally mean June 19th for all we know. TiPb thinks AT&T faithful will see MMS sooner than you may think.

More AT&T related questions can be answered via this AT&T FAQ.

Counterpoint: AT&T isn’t cheating iPhone 3G customers

In my youth, I sold cell phones for Verizon. It was not a rare occurrence to have a customer sign up for a new account and get their free phone, only to come back a week later and tell me they dropped it in a toilet and wanted another one. They were shocked when the phone they got for free just a few days before now cost them close to $200.

To a lesser extent, the same thing is happening with iPhone 3G owners wishing to upgrade to the 3G S for the subsidized price. A year ago, 3G owners bought a $600 cell phone (assuming we're talking about the 8GB model) for just shy of $200. The 2-year contract guarantees that AT&T makes their $400 back over the length of your contract. So far, 3G owners are only about 1 year into their contract, so they've really only paid off about half of their subsidy to AT&T.

Most carriers would stop there, and offer no additional incentives until you've come close to reaching the end of your contract. AT&T is being about as generous as they can be by offering 3G owners half of the subsidy after completing half of their contract. Once 3G owners have fulfilled a year of their contract, they can get the 3G S for the base price ($199) plus half the subsidy ($200) for a grand total of $399.

Read on for some fun cell phone contract math.

iPhone 3G S Now Shipping From Apple

3GS_Shipping

I woke up this morning to an email from Apple — my iPhone 3G S has shipped! A quick look at the tracking information via the UPS website shows that it has been shipped from Shenzhen China to arrive at my home by the 19th at the latest.

Something important to remember, if you did order from Apple and will not be home at the time of the delivery - you must fill out a form via Apple’s web site for them to leave it at your door if that’s what you prefer. If not, you will be waiting until Monday and that would make for a long weekend.

So far we have had no confirmation regarding phones shipping from AT&T. Any AT&T customers receive a shipping notification yet?

iPhone OS Running on a Big Screen Mac Pro!

See above. Dreamfield.se (via CruchGear) has hacked iPhone OS 2.x to run on a multi-touch monitor of a Mac Pro desktop.

It’s not the iTablet we’ve all been waiting for, and likely more than a little bit of an arm workout, but as iPhone hacks go it’s impressive. Most impressive.

iPhone 3G S Firmware Already Lining Up on Apple’s Servers?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

No, downloading and installing it on your iPhone 2G won’t magically give it a better camera, video recording, or unicorn tear-powered 2x speed. (It will most likely give you heartache — never mix and match firmware!) but MacRumors forum has already found iPhone OS 3.0 for iPhone hardware 2,1 lingering about Apple.com.

(We’re betting it’s waiting in line for the hardware — curse those pre-order limits!)

Again, we don’t recommend doing anything with it — if you’re getting an iPhone 3G S it’ll come pre-installed. We simply present it as another check box on the road to release, like Find My iPhone going live, and Push Notifications hitting the App Store.

Fun week ahead, no doubt!

Tap Tap Revenge Debuts Push Notification in App Store

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

9to5Mac (via Gizmodo) shows Push Notification already working in the latest version of Tap Rap Revenge [Free - iTunes link] when run on the iPhone 3.0 GM developer seed. Gizmodo, of course, raises the pertinent question:

It certainly isn’t the most creative use of background notifications—the messages only pop up when you’re challenged by another player—and I’m already wondering how, when all kinds of apps have this capability, the iPhone’s exceedingly simple notification system will scale.

Since Text Alerts don’t tack, a new one obliterates the one before it. What happens when an urgent IM is replaced by “Hey, dooooooode, can haz rock out?!” Sure, badges remain, but then you have to go looking for them…
