Wireless charging comes to Apple’s iPhone 3GS, thanks to WildCharge

Envious of your Pre toting pals and that Touchstone charging rig? Don't sweat it -- WildCharge is coming through in the clutch to bring similar wireless charging technology to Apple's own handset. Starting today, iPhone (3G and 3GS included) and iPod touch users can order up a WildCharge Skin along with a WildCharger Pad in order to bring wire-free charging to their smartphone. Just slap the skin on, plug the pad in and toss the handset down on said pad. Just like that, you've got fresh energy flowing without having to scour the house for that little AC adapter. The pain? $34.99 for the skin, or $79.99 for the skin and pad.

TapLynx - Create iPhone focused newsreader applications without programming

TapLynxUsers of NewsGator's NetNewsWire iPhone news reader have been waiting with bated breath for the next iteration of the application, with the promise of the ability to mark news items unread and send articles to InstaPaper, amongst other enhancements. As time has gone on, it became clear that Brent Simmons was working on other projects that are related to (but most decidedly not) the next iteration of NetNewsWire for the iPhone.

So what has been keeping him busy? As it turns out, NewsGator is rolling out an entire iPhone framework called TapLynx, which will allow its users to create content-rich topic-focused newsreader applications. The first such application, the All Things Digital iPhone app, was created by Simmons himself.

The goal of TapLynx is to offer users a framework that allows them to simply choose some images, set URLs for content feeds, and generate a media application for the iPhone without requiring any programming.

TapLynx is currently not even yet in beta, but you can sign up to get an alpha invitation on the TapLynx site.

By the way, for the NetNewsWire iPhone fans out there, it turns out that the next iteration of the app will be based on TapLynx, so even though it doesn't seem like there has been much recent movement, things are still progressing. We may even see the ability for NetNewsWire (both the Mac and iPhone versions) to synchronize with Google Reader accounts.

WWDC Demo: iTreadmill

iTreadmill (App Store link) is a pedometer app for your iPhone or iPod touch. I spoke with the developer, who demoed the app for us at WWDC. It looks nice, appears to perform well, and features a respectable number of ways to customize and tune the readings. Pedometer apps may not save the world, but if you're looking for something much less expensive than the Nike+iPod device, this will do in a pinch. There's also a Lite version (App Store link) if you want to try it yourself.

iPhone video on the air

Posted on by Mel Martin.

A Miami television station aired a story completely shot on an iPhone, as they covered the launch of the iPhone 3GS. The video looks pretty good, and once it was shot it was uploaded to Final Cut Pro for editing. Although you can trim the beginning and end of clips on the iPhone itself, you really can't edit.

The story aired on WFOR's 5PM News. The reporter, Gio Benitez, also used the iPhone Voice Memo app to record his narration, so the piece really was a true iPhone production.

Here's a link to the WFOR web page and that contains a link to the video as it aired on the news. If you want to go directly to the video it is here.

Of course there is nothing new about video on a cell phone. It's been around for quite a few years, but with a faster processor giving the user a nominal 30 frames per second, decent video is now a reality.

Don't confuse the video from the iPhone with what a good consumer camera can do, and my Flip minoHD cam looks a bit better, but for capturing something on the fly, it's a nice thing to have.

One other note. If you upload the video to MobileMe or YouTube the phone will compress the video before you upload and it won't look nearly as nice when you get it right off the phone before that compression step.

Thanks to John in Indianpolis for the tip.

Turn by Turn navigation at app store-from AT&T

Posted on by Mel Martin.

The company that iPhone users either love or hate has just surprised everyone with a turn by turn navigation solution now available at the app store. While app is free, to use it you'll have to pay AT&T US$9.99 a month, which is charged to your monthly bill.

AT&T Navigator [App Store] is part of a partnership with TeleNav, and it gives voice directions, along with automatic rerouting and real time traffic updates.

The app will find the lowest gas prices along the way, but it doesn't integrate with your address book for entering destinations. You can enter destinations from a PC or Mac, and sync them to your iPhone.

The maps are not on your phone, so if you lose data reception, good bye navigation.

The app requires an iPhone running OS 3.0. AT&T offers this service on some of their other smartphones, so I guess it wasn't a surprise to see it on Apple devices. This will be good for competition, as we await the announced product from TomTom and others who are keen to profit from the demand for navigation services.

If any of our readers try this app, we'd be interested in your thoughts.

ColorWare outs custom colors for the Apple iPhone 3GS

Posted on by Laura June.
Categories: Uncategorized.
If you're anything at all like us, you were just a tad disappointed by the color "options" of Apple's newest foray into the world of mobile phones, the iPhone 3GS. After all, who wants to be limited to just black and white these days? Not us, that's for sure -- and ColorWare's just announced a fix for all that. Pricing for these customs jobs runs $150 for the back of the handset, $20 a piece for the bezel frame and button, and $15 the SIM holder. They'll also do up your earbuds for an additional $15. A small price to pay for beauty, no? Another shot of a different color combo after the break.

How to: Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 3.0 - Mac OS X redsn0w Edition

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.
Categories: Uncategorized.

redsn0w

Disclaimer - Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing.

There has been a lot of buzz going on in the forums regarding jailbreaking the iPhone 3.0 software lately, and a lot of questions to go along with it!. Today we’re going to take a deeper look at the exact steps you have to take to get your iPhone 3G with 3.0 jailbroken on your Mac.

Let’s get started, after the jump!

Get the tools

First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you’re not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes.

All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your Mac. Next you will need to download the following files:

Jailbreak Process

Now double click on the redsn0w file you just download to the redsn0w application. You will then be prompted to select the 3.0 IPSW file you downloaded. Do as instructed now. Once it is successfully identified press next to continue.

redmac_1

Now you will have to select whether you’d like Cydia, Icy, or both installed on your phone. You have to install at least one of them. Make sure your choices are checked and press next. *It seems some people are having issues with Cydia crashing instantaneously after launching it. So it may be wise to select Icy. Both apps essentially serve the same purpose. redmac_2

Next you will be connecting your iPhone 3G to your Mac. Once your device is connected, hold the power button until the “Slide to Power Off” appears - then slide to power it off. Press next. redmac_3

redsn0w will not put your iPhone 3G into DFU mode. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions exactly. Start by holding down the power button for 3 seconds. redmac_4

Hold down both both the power button as well as the home button for 10 seconds. redmac_5

Finally release the power button while continuing to hold the home button down until redsn0w detects your iPhone 3G. redsn0w_6

Once device will now reboot once it is detected by redsn0w. redmac_6

The application will now begin the process of uploading the new ramdisk. redmac_7

Once this is complete you will be notified that the jailbreak process is complete. Click the Finish button. Even though redsn0w completed it’s process your iPhone will still be finishing up. This can take up to 5 minutes. Be patient, when it’s done you will have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with Cydia/Icy on the SpringBoard. redmac_8

Unlocking Process

Now if you are looking to unlock your iPhone follow these steps below.

  • If you are unlocking for T-Mobile USA be sure to disable 3G.

  • Run Cydia or Icy

  • Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”.

  • Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w.

  • Reboot your iPhone 3G.

Enjoy your freshly unlocked iPhone 3G running the 3.0 software!

Find My iPhone reunites true nerd with lost iPhone

Posted on by Paul Miller.
Categories: Uncategorized.

You know, we might be inclined to disbelieve this exciting tale of derring-do if it weren't for the highly improbably heroics and ingenuity displayed by its three protagonists -- you just can't make this stuff up. Probably. Kevin, Ryan and Mark were in Chicago minding their own nerdness out at Brickworld when Kevin left his iPhone behind at a dive bar. When they went back for it just minutes later the phone was gone, and instead of calling the cops like a bunch of suckers, Kevin and co. did the right thing and pulled out a Sprint 3G dongle and a MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, Find My iPhone couldn't get a lock on his phone at all -- it was either off or out of data range. The next day at lunch he finally got a delivery confirmation message from me.com, which kicked off a wild, dangerous chase into the wilds of Chicago. We won't spoil the ending for you (he finds the iPhone), but Kevin does raise a couple good points about the service functionality: you need to pull up MobileMe on laptop to use the service (instead of perhaps another iPhone), movement updates aren't pushed, ringer volume impacts alert volume whether the phone is on vibrate or not, and there should be an option for controlling the phone in more nefarious ways like taking pictures. We're glad it all ended up well, but those moments of Lego bliss that Kevin and his friends missed out on are gone forever.

[Thanks, Tristan W.]
