Spaced: How Apple gives blog writers apoplexy

Posted on by Erica Sadun.

Just when you think you're in the groove for the new iPhone 3G S, Apple goes and starts changing the game. The 3G S is, figuratively speaking, no more. Apple has quietly been changing all references on it site from 3G S to 3GS. The space between the G and the S has been removed.

TidBITS broke the story in a piece aptly titled "Ding, Dong, the iPhone 3GS Space Is Dead". (We too did note the change in a story yesterday.) TUAW reader and personal tech review colleague Joachim Bean found the pair of images you see here. To the right is a cached image from June 15th. To the left is a shot from yesterday, June 22nd. Notice anything? Yes, it's been spacicided.

So will we miss the space? It was, as Engst points out, an awkward construction. But after forcing ourselves into the space habit, it may be a hard one to break.

So let's have a moment of silence for the 3G S space. It is dead, not stunned, and not pining for the fjords. Despite its brief moment in the pop culture sun, the 3G S space has expired and gone to meet its maker. Bereft of life, the space rests in peace. And if we at TUAW may occasionally nail it back into place by accident, be assured that it will be reinterred and pushing up daisies ASAP.

Ultrasn0w for 3G, OS 3.0 is out — 3GS not yet

If you know what Ultrasn0w is, then you maybe just did a little happy dance. If you don't: it unlocks your iPhone to work on other carriers. If you don't care for AT&T, for example, you can use Ultrasn0w on T-Mobile. One tip: you'll have to disable 3G for T-Mobilers in the US of A. Lucky us, eh? Ultrasn0w doesn't magically add CDMA powers to your iPhone, so give up your dreams, Sprint, Verizon and just-about-everyone-else-customers.

Dear Apple — Where’s the iDisk App?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

Hey, it’s started to work with Push Notification apps, so who can blame us for taking a second bite at the Dear Apple. So…

Where’s that free iDisk App at? You remember, the one on your What’s New in MobileMe website:

The free iDisk app, available from the App Store in iTunes, lets you view your iDisk files right on your iPhone. Popular file types, such as Microsoft Office and iWork ’09 documents and presentations, PDFs, and more, are viewable in landscape or portrait. Just tap the file to access it and use pinch gestures to zoom in and out. And any file you’ve viewed recently doesn’t need to be reloaded. So if you start reading a document in the cab to the airport, you can quickly resume reading it on the plane.

One of the great features of iDisk is file sharing. Files that are too big to email can be shared easily by accessing your iDisk online at me.com. Now you can enjoy that same convenience using your iPhone and the iDisk app. Just tap the Share button, choose your recipients, and iDisk sends them an email with a link to download your file. You can limit the number of days a shared file is available and set a password to protect it. And you don’t even need to download a file first to share it.

Apple, you tease! It’s labeled “Coming Soon”, fair enough, but any hints on how soon “soon” is?

Raw Performance: iPhone 3GS 4x Faster than iPhone 3G at 3D!

taptaptap_iphone3gs_performance

TapTapTap, developers of the upcoming Plasma app decided to slap a big, honkin’ frame rate indicator on a raw version just to see what differences, if any, the iPhone 3GS hardware provided compared to the previous generation iPhone 3G. The results?

As the video shows, in our OpenGL ES testing, the 3GS is generally close to four times faster than the 3G. Results will vary depending on the application but this is remarkable to say the least.

Check out the link above to watch the full QuickTime video. Impressive stuff.

TUAW, meanwhile, had this to say:

On a related note, we hear that Apple has done “even more” than we can publicly disclose around speed improvements on the device.

Hmmm, do tell?

WWDC Video: AOL’s Christina Wick on developing for Macs, iPhones

Posted on by Victor Agreda, Jr..

I had a moment to talk to Technical Director Christina Wick at WWDC. She told us about the Mapquest app, plus a cool lifestreaming feature coming soon to AIM. Christina was featured in a video by Apple about developing on the iPhone, and it's clear AOL has embraced the platform, with several apps performing exceptionally well on the store. We've covered AIM, DailyFinance and MapQuest in the past, but there are others as well (and we think a certain blog will get one someday...). Christina's team has been working hard not just on the iPhone, but polishing up the old AOL client for Mac too in a push called "Back to the Mac" -- it has been completely re-written and is much more Mac friendly than... well, it just wasn't Mac friendly at all 3 years ago. We can't wait to see what apps and desktop software her team releases in the future.

Note: AOL is also the corporate parent of TUAW & Weblogs Inc.
