Sony Designing Mobile Phone/PSP Hybrid to Better Compete Against iPhone?

Reuters reports that Sony Corp is working on a cellphone/game player hybrid to better compete with Apple's iPod Touch and iPhone.

Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of...

The Competition: Sony Working on Playstation/PSP Phone?

Oft rumored, is Sony ready to leverage both the struggling Sony Ericsson partnership and the still fairly solid Sony Playstation brand to produce a Playstation Phone? (PSP Phone? PSPhone? PSP Go-Call-Someone?).

Makes sense from a competitive point of view, and something we certainly thought we’d see sooner. If Sony can get passed their historic intra-company integration problems, and avoid doing anything silly like ATRAC DRM or root kits — if they could get a product manager who could cut through the quagmire and drive everything that’s good about Sony into the product — it could be an interesting contender.

For the iPhone, of course:

Nikkei says it will directly compete with the iPhone, and that a project team was set up last July to start working on the console/phone hybrid. So basically, it’s the same rumor we’ve been hearing for years, except this time from a reliable source. Whether it’s got any truth to it remains to be seen. Note: The above image is a mockup. Seems obvious but sometimes you gotta say it out loud.

The TUAW how-to guide to iPhone 3GS video recording and editing

It seems like everyone who's purchased an iPhone 3GS at this point has had a different reason for buying one. For some people, it was all about getting a faster CPU; for others, it was their first 3G-and-beyond smartphone.

My personal reasons for spending my hard-earned bucks to buy a 3GS were to take advantage of the higher-resolution (3 megapixel) autofocus camera, since I love taking photos with my iPhone, and to shoot video with my phone. Phone video is nothing new; I had it three years ago on a Palm Treo 680. But the ability of the 3GS to not only record video, but also allow limited editing before sharing the video in a number of ways, really made me want to get a 3GS immediately.

In this TUAW First Look, I describe the recording and editing processes in detail, and then give you my impressions of how good or bad the 3GS video capabilities are. I also provide a comparison with video taken by a T-Mobile G1 Android smartphone.

BeeJiveIM, Zombieville USA, App Store, Pocket Tunes Radio, AT&T Navigator, Oleophobic Screen, 1Password Pro - TiPb Picks of the Week

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

tipb_pick_of_the_week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game.

So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break!

Chad’s Pick: BeejiveIM 3.0.

What makes this IM/Chat client so great is the multiple services you can add (AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN/Windows Live, MySpace IM, Yahoo! and Facebook) and the great customization features. You can customize the background wallpaper for each chat, change chat bubble colors and more. Apple’s Push Notification service works really well too, I can’t praise it highly enough in this instance. If you need a mutiple -account chat client, Beejive is the way to go! - [$9.99 - iTunes link]

Chris’ Pick: Zombieville USA

I have been spending some time this week playing an old favorite - Zombieville USA. I happened to open it up, saw my high score, and was on a quest to beat 714 zombies. Last night, around 12:32am, I finally got 726 zombies killed! [$1.99 - iTunes link]

Zombieville USA

James’ Pick: iTunes App Store

Since I have been traveling for the last few weeks, I have been in cities where I am not all that familiar with the surroundings. Enter the App Store. With the ability to find new apps that help me in my current city, I was able to find out of the way places to eat, the BART schedule and tracker in San Francisco and a new game or two to pass the time.

Jeremy’s Pick: Pocket Tunes Radio

Forget paying that $3 a month fee to Sirius XM and still listen to everything they have to offer including Howard Stern. Pocket Tunes does it all for a single fee of $9.99. Well worth it. (Note: you must have a Sirius XM subscription) [$9.99 - iTunes link]

Pocket Tunes Radio

Leanna’s Pick: AT&T Navigator

I’ve been using AT&T Navigator for a couple days now and am rather impressed. It calculates routes quickly and the ETA is very accurate as well. You can also search for places nearby or by name and of course create favorite places. I’ve always been hesitant to get a navigation system because I though Google maps with GPS was good enough… I was wrong! [Free + $9.99/month - iTunes link]

AT&T Navigator

Matt’s Pick: iPhone 3GS Oleophobic Screen

Since getting the iPhone 3GS, I have sat down with it while eating, checking emails & Twitter, all the while sliming up the screen with my oily-chicken fingers. After eating I can simply wipe the screen onto my jeans & viola! the screen is clean. This is one of my favorite things about the new iPhone 3Gs!

Rene’s Pick: 1Password Pro

I’ve already picked 1Password, and explained the reasons why. Now I’m picking 1Password Pro for pretty much the same reasons I did last time but now with the added benefit of iPhone 3.0 enabled copy and paste goodness. Instead of using the in-app browser, you can still keep your passwords locked up safely and now just copy, switch to Mobile Safari, and paste them in. You can even use the enhanced javascript-based Mobile Safari integration to automate the transition process. And the promise more to come (check out the video how-to). Can’t wait. [$5.99 - iTunes link]

1password pro

You’re part of team TiPb too, so what’s your pick? What app was your absolute fav last week? Let us — and everyone — know in the comments!

UK ATMs set to offer WiFi access, free for BT and iPhone users

Posted on by Vladislav Savov.

BT Broadband customers and O2 iPhone owners, rejoice -- some 2,500 ATM machines near you will soon be converted to serve as free WiFi hotspots, courtesy of BT Openzone and Cashbox, perhaps the most mismatched pair of commercial metaphors ever put together. The initial rollout starts with 10 machines this week and numbers are expected to steadily increase. Non-BT users and iPhone heretics wanting to join in the fun will have to shell out £5.88 ($10) for 90 minutes or a more reasonable £9.79 ($16) for 24 hours.

iPhone 3GS takes plunge in pool while shooting video… and lives to tell the tale

Posted on by Joshua Topolsky.

Now, we're hoping this isn't some elaborate hoax perpetrated on the kind citizens of the internet, because if it's real, it's amazing. Here's the deal: a man capturing video poolside with his iPhone 3GS somehow loses control of the device and ends up dunking the entire phone... while filming. Miraculously, he manages to fish out the handset and it's still rolling. We don't know what the lifespan was / is beyond this clip, but obviously long enough to upload the video or transfer it to a computer. Impressive stuff, though we strongly suggest you don't test this one out on your own. Check out the full video after the break.

Apple confirms pulling “Hottest Girls” app with topless women

Apple on Friday confirmed it has removed Hottest Girls from the App Store due to images of topless women. Developer Allen Leung initially claimed to have ’sold out’ of the app and removed the title on his own will due to server usage, but the inaccurate explanation was later removed from the site. “Apple will not [...]

iPhone 3GS jailbreak almost completed - using old iPod Touch exploit?

Not that anyone ever had any doubts that the Dev Team would be able to work their magic on the 3GS, but this is quick: within a week of the phone’s launch, the hackers say they’ve figured it out. The Dev Team says that the 3GS is vulnerable to the same “24Kpwn” bootrom exploit that plagues [...]

Hot Stuff - iPhone 3GS white overheats and becomes discolored?

Posted on by Andrew Wells.
Categories: Uncategorized.
We don’t know how many people have hit this problem (the Apple support forums talk about only overheating occasionally), but at least one user claims that his white iPhone 3GS has become PINK due to overheating, which is a very unusual (and sad) problem, if true. Not that there’s much to take away from this, but [...]

BeamBox outs MiLi Evolution Mini Power Projector for iPhone, iPod touch

Posted on by Laura June.

Pocket projectors -- if they aren't quite 'all the rage' -- crop up all over the place these days. Beambox has teamed up with MiLi (makers of some fine iPhone chargers) on this newest one. The MiLi Evolution Mini Power Projector works in conjunction with your iPhone or iPod touch, docking it into the unit which then acts as projector and charger in one. The LCOS projector boasts 10 lumens of brightness for VGA projection of an image from 3 to 70 inches. It'll be about $255 when it's released next week. One more shot after the break.

iPhone 3.0 User Interface Details

Sebastiaan de With — aside from gritting his teeth and almost blinding himself in one eye while reproducing the incomprehensibly pin-striped logo above — has bent his design-focus and Cocoia blog towards an analysis of Apple’s new iPhone 3.0 user interface:

Sometimes, I’m considering if other companies in the cellphone / personal media player market have caught up to Apple’s care to details and design sensibilities, but then things like these make the reality very obvious to me:

Apple’s still the leader of the pack by several tail lengths.

If you’re into the details of user interface and design, give it a read and let us know what you think about the look and feel of iPhone 3.0.

iPhone 3GS Suffering Heat Discoloration?

white iPhone 3GS discoloration from heat

We haven’t seen or heard about this at TiPb, though it did happen once upon a time with Apple’s white MacBooks — heat related discoloration. We hope and imagine Apple learned from this, but have any of you experienced your white iPhone 3GS suddenly getting a tan? If so, let us know in the comments and more importantly, make an appointment at the Apple Store to get it swapped out ASAP!
