Notes, Voice Memo, Google Sync, E*TRADE Mobile Pro, Camera Zoom - TiPb Picks of the Week

tipb_pick_of_the_week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game.

So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break!

Chad’s Pick: Notes

Chad’s pick of the week has to be the built-in iPhone Notes app. With the iPhone 3.0 software update, the Notes application has become much more useful; spotlight search, in-line delete, landscape and syncing has bumped Evernote for tasks (using the Autofocus system) and is very simple to use. Couple this with the built in ability to email your notes, you have one killer-app! [Built in]

Chris’ Pick: Voice Memo

My pick of the week is the Voice Memo app in iPhone 3.0. From the early days of my Palm Zire, I always liked having a voice recording app. I felt it was useful to be able to jot down a quick note or htought, rather than typing it out (and especially if you are driving and can’t type!). As soon as I got my iPhone, I purchased a voice memo app, and now Apple has included one. True, it doesn’t offer all of the accoutrements that some do (voice to text, wifi synching, etc) but it is a nice feature to include, and I find myself using it on almost a daily basis. Now if only they made it able to record phone calls. [Built in]

James’ Pick: Google Sync

In my upcoming job change, I will be losing the free Exchange server I was using to house my contacts and calendar. Enter Google Sync. With free Exchange connection for push calendar and contacts, I am able to safely save my data in the cloud. [Web link]

Justin’s Pick: E*TRADE Mobile Pro

I’ve using this app for little over a month now and love it. I find the user interface design to be very intuitive, especially with all the functionality that is packed into it. Also, a recent update has now added push notifications for stock and account alerts which makes it even more useful. You can do almost everything on that app that you can do from the computer like trade stocks, view streaming real time quotes, transfer money, view market and stock news, and much more! To sum it up, if you have an Etrade account this is a must have app. [Free - iTunes link]

Matt’s Pick: VLCRemote

This is a very nifty app for those of you that enjoy watching videos on your PC or Mac. VLCRemote controls VLC player via WiFi (my mac was using a LAN line, but it’s on the same network). The app lest you control all the basics, plus view your playlist, utilize different skip speeds, and use an IMDB lookup on selected playlist items. This is a must have app for an VLC user! [$2.99 - iTunes link]

Rene’s Pick: Camera Zoom v1.1

Not withstanding the conspiratorial selection of multiple built-in apps above, I’m joining Justin in staying true to the App Store with a freshly updated little photo gem, Camera Zoom. While the iPhone 3GS did wonders with 3 megapixels, auto focus, macro, auto white-balance and overall picture quality, still missing is any form of digital zoom. Enter the simply named app above. Just move the slider to frame the scene as tightly as you’d like, up to 4x magnification, then snap the shot. Results aren’t optical quality, of course, but they’re surprisingly good. If you use your iPhone as a convenience camera replacement, this is a must-have app for your toolbox. Works fine as the hardware allows on iPhone 3G under 3.0 as well. [$0.99 - iTunes link]

Camera Zoom v1.1

You’re part of team TiPb too, so what’s your pick? What app was your absolute fav last week? Let us — and everyone — know in the comments!

iPhone apps I paid for but don’t use

When the App Store was launched, I went a bit nutty and downloaded lots of apps. Eventually I limited myself to apps I thought I'd love. Some were free, some weren't. Recently iTunes told me that I had 13 updates available, and I noticed that I've paid for many apps that I don't use.

It's easy to list your favorite apps. As a contrast, here's a list of the apps that I paid for but don't use (as well as why). Note that all app links will launch iTunes.

Air Sharing

This great app by Avatron Software lets you use your iPhone as a virtual hard drive, and was the first of its kind that I tried.* Later, it was replaced by Evernote. I use multiple computers, and accessing files from any one of them is important. Throw the iPhone on top and I'm a happy guy.

Found Footage: Pull My Finger stands for freedom

I've got a soft spot in my comedy heart for The Daily Show's Wyatt Cenac, one of the newer correspondents on the program; he often manages to give interview subjects just enough Colbertian leeway to wander into the danger zone, then lets them blunder about, bumping into the awkward silences to excellent effect.

That's exactly what Cenac did this week when he interviewed the creators of iPhone fart apps Pull My Finger and iFart, who have a long-simmering feud over who gassed whom on the fart-app frontier. The whole thing is fine and funny... right up until the point that Pull My Finger developer Eric Stratton compares his app's struggle against injustice to Jackie Robinson breaking the color line in baseball. That's when it becomes deliciously, painfully hilarious. For the record, Stratton claims he was joking.

You can check out the video in the second half of the post. Nice work, Wyatt.

Augmented reality apps on hold until 3.1?

Posted on by Michael Rose.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that straphanger hopes for an augmented reality guide to the NYC subways were flying high... and now it looks like they may have to wait for Labor Day before they can amaze their friends and stun their enemies. The LA Times is reporting a conversation with Acrossair developers where they indicate that the full-screen video features of the app can't ship before Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1 -- which they expect to drop in early September, in case you're marking your calendar.

According to the story, the live video/augmented reality approach depends on an unpublished camera API, hence the apps cannot be set free in the wild just yet. That may explain why several other inside-the-Matrix apps haven't cleared the store... and why September may see a bit of a surge in admissions to hospital emergency rooms for people with bruised foreheads and sheepish expressions.

Hacker states that iPhone 3GS encryption scheme is very easy (too easy) to crack?

Noted iPhone security crusher Jonathan Zdziarski has cracked the iPhone 3GS encryption security, which is to be expected, but the ease and speed with which he did it is worrisome. Zdziarski claims the iPhone 3GS is thus “useless” to businesses that value extreme security in their communications. That’s a bold statement. The iPhone certainly isn’t as [...]

iPhone 3.1: Augmented Reality Apps are a Go!

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The L.A. Times (via MacRumors) confirms what TiPb heard following the release of iPhone 3.1 Beta 2 — public APIs for information overlay of live video will allow “augmented reality” apps to make their way into the App Store.

Apple told Acrossair, developer of the Nearest Tube train finder, that the app will be approved for distribution after Apple releases version 3.1 of the iPhone software, which the developer expects will land in early September.

This time frame, if accurate, will likely also coincide with Apple’s traditional iPod and iTunes event, which for the last two years has seen the iPod touch center stage, and last year also introduced iPhone 2.1.

If a camera is integrated into the third generation iPod touch, as current rumors indicate, it would make for a fairly mind-blowing demo…

How To: Recover Your MobileMe Password and Update it Often for Added Security

MobileMe WebApp New Look

Apple has updated their MobileMe News “blog” with a helpful tip for added security, and for when that security necessitates the need for a helpful little reminder.

First up, Apple reminds everyone that even good passwords, left static for too long, grow old and stale.

One simple way to increase the security of your life online is to change your account password periodically.

You can change your MobileMe password via the Account icon, and Apple provides some suggestions for picking good passwords. (Here’s ours — use something long and with lots of numbers and symbols thrown in. Pseudo-random is the best. Use GRC.com to generate it, or use a good password manager (I use 1Password on the Mac, my PC friends recommend RoboForm) to both generate and store lots of logins).

Next up is what to do if you forget your MobileMe password, and it’s fairly standard stuff, involving a secret question:

Should you ever forget your MobileMe password, go to the MobileMe login page at me.com and click the Forgot password link. You’ll be taken to a page and given the option of resetting your password by answering a secret question to establish your identity.

Pro tip: If you’re even a semi-public figure, or just “don’t trust anyone” make up a fake history, with fake maiden names, pet names, etc. or anyone who knows your background can hack your account as easily as they did Salma Hayak’s.
