Traveling this weekend? Win a $100 gas card from App Cubby and TUAW

According to statistics released this week from AAA, 39.1 million Americans are expected to take a trip of 50 miles or more away from home. That's a lot of driving, a lot of gas, and consequently a lot of cold hard cash. TUAW and App Cubby would like to help make this holiday more fuel efficient -- and for one lucky TUAW reader, a lot less expensive.

Tracking fuel economy over time is the best way to make sure you and your vehicle are driving as efficiently as possible. With Gas Cubby [iTunes link] on sale from now until Labor Day for only $2.99, you've got one less excuse for not being more aware of your gas consumption. Gas Cubby makes tracking fuel economy quick, easy, and, dare we say, fun (that's what Dave had to say in his review of Gas Cubby 2.0).

Leave your favorite green driving tip in the comments and we'll select someone at random and send that person a $100 Shell gas card.
  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment telling us your favorite green driving tip.
  • The comment must be left before Monday, September 8, 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • One winner will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: Shell gas card ($100 value)

Loopt strikes deal with AT&T for background monitoring on iPhone

Posted on by Donald Melanson.

Well, it's not quite the sort of background application that most folks have been hoping for on the iPhone, but Loopt has nonetheless scored something of a first for its location-based iPhone app. As Silicon Alley Insider reports, the company has struck a deal directly with AT&T that'll let it monitor your location whenever you have a network connection, regardless of whether you have the Loopt app open or not. That, as you might have surmised, is done entirely on a server-to-server basis, and it'll initially be made available as a part of free 14-trial program limited to 5,000 users, after which it'll run them and everyone else $3.99 a month (added to your AT&T bill). Feeling lucky (or quick)? You can put your name and number into the hat by hitting up the appropriate read link below.

Smule and “I am T-Pain” Bring Auto-Tune to iPhone

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Smule and I am T-Pain [$2.99 - iTunes link] are bringing Auto-Tune to the iPhone. Or, more sarcastically, want an easy way to simulate what karaoke sounds like over a really bad phone connection? There’s an app for that!

We kid. (Not really, we’re just old). Okay, everyone who cringes at the mere thought of this app, be it caused by flashbacks of Cher, Konye, or the titular T-Pain himself, stop reading now. Everyone else? Mashable has the details:

Seriously, how cool is that? Do you have any idea how many hours I could waste getting my mom to sing Auto-Tuned hip-hop? The best part is, after you record your songs (using built-in tunes or your own freestyle tracks), you can share them on Facebook or MySpace. Additional tracks will be available for purchase through the app in the future.

Yo, check it. This is for realz. Smash bomb. You’ll sound dope. Cash money bank! Get it or regret it, you know what they saying?

(Congrats on the new gig, Christina!)

TomTom’s Car Kit for iPhone will be your co-pilot in October

Posted on by Donald Melanson.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Well, it just passed through the FCC last week, and it looks like TomTom itself is now finally getting a bit more specific about when its new Car Kit for iPhone will start shipping. While it's still not providing an exact date just yet, the company's newly-updated FAQ now says that the device will be available directly from TomTom sometime this October. What's more, the company also says that the kit (which also works with the iPod touch) will be initially sold without the TomTom iPhone app, contrary to what was previously rumored, although it's not clear if a bundle with the app will also be available at a later date.

Loopt and AT&T Work Out $3.99/month “Always On” Location Updates Deal for iPhone

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

loopt

Loopt [Free - iTunes link], which matches social networks with location-based services into one smoldering hot Web 2.0 sammich, has struck a deal with AT&T that will let them update their iPhone users’ location information even when the Loopt app proper isn’t running.

Yes, you read that correctly — the Loopt iPhone app isn’t being granted any extra special background multi-tasking sanction by Apple for the iPhone, this is strictly a server-to-server, Loopt-to-AT&T deal, and it will come at a price. BusinessInsider scores the scoop:

Loopt will first offer the new always-on service in a trial for 5,000 users. You can sign up at Loopt’s site using your iPhone’s MobileSafari browser. After the 14-day trial, the always-on feature will cost $3.99 per month, added to your AT&T bill.

BusinessInsider also renews that old rumor about how Apple is seriously considering limited multi-tasking in a future software update. And, yes, they’ll have to have something interesting to tempt users with in iPhone 4.0/4G next summer, so why not run with that? We’d like it!

But back to Loopt, anyone dying to give AT&T an extra $4 a month for precise stalking tracking of their friends and family?

AT&T tries to repair the PR damage

Posted on by Mel Martin.
Categories: Uncategorized.

We've complained often about the PR mistakes that AT&T has committed. Customer communication has been poor or absent.

The result has been sinking approval for the company, and AT&T is pretty much getting the blame for any problems the iPhone has.

After finally announcing a date for MMS functionality yesterday, AT&T is taking the proverbial bull by the horns and talking about the issues that have left many customers angry and hoping for a way out of their AT&T contract. Namely: 3G coverage concerns and bandwidth issues that affect speed and connectivity.

So now we have a YouTube video with a dude that looks a bit like 'Mac' on the Apple TV ads (or Stephen Colbert's kid brother). He's a bit untidy and has a couple days of stubble, not the usual AT&T pristine spokesperson (think Bill Kurtis on the AT&T Mobility ads). He identifies himself as 'Seth the blogger guy.'

I couldn't find the new video on the AT&T Wireless site, but it may be there somewhere. I did notice that the company still hasn't updated the MMS information, so it still says 'coming late this summer'. Oh well.

The video is below.

We've seen Seth before. He was hauled out in all his geekiness in July to talk about AT&T free Wi-Fi at company operated hotspots. We also had the pleasure of his company in June to talk about the unpopular iPhone 3GS upgrade policies.

Well, does it work for you. Feel all better now? I didn't think so.
