Gameplay is weak, the graphics aren't compelling, and the use of the iPhone's built-in accelerometer are poor in this surfing game. And that's a shame because iSurf should deliver more fun than it actually does.

A BBQ in your pocket with Barbecue

I've always enjoyed miniatures for some reason, and Barbecue [iTunes Link], from Equinux , is an enjoyable miniature barbecue grill. It's a pretty simple thing, really. You launch the app, light a match to get the grill going, then spend your time throwing a variety of meats and corn onto the grill. You double-tap to flip, and drag to serve it on a plate. Once the food is on a plate (only one item per plate), you can send it to Twitter, Facebook and email... something we see on every app, really.

If you're looking for a cute toy with a high degree of realism, a lot of time and energy went into the making of Barbecue, and you can learn all about the process of making the app on the Equinux site. It's only a buck, so what do you have to lose?

Multi-Touch to Go from iPhone to Mouse?

Multi-touch input methods

Is Apple on the verge of releasing a new, multi-touch enabled mouse for their Mac line that harnesses the technology debuted in the iPhone? That’s what AppleInsider is claiming.

Unlike the iPhone, which garnered almost immediate and universal praise when it brought multi-touch mainstream, Apple has historically gotten the opposite reaction to their Mac mouse line, from the abysmal hockey-puck that came with the original iMac to the latest track-balling, gunk-clogging Mighty Mouse that ships in old-school white, even for the latest gen aluminum Mac Pros.

So the poetry of Apple’s latest input technology swinging full circle to one of their oldest (keyboard aside) isn’t lost on us, and goes to show just how deeply multi-touch is being explored — and more importantly, realized and integrated — into Apple’s entire product line.

And it goes to show what TiPb’s been saying for a long time, the iPhone benefitted from the Mac platform, and the Mac platform is certainly benefitting from the iPhone!

Guest post: Setting up an AT&T MicroCell with Murphy Mac

Posted on by TUAW Blogger.

Editor's Note: We welcome guest poster Murphy Mac, a long-time friend of the site who shared with us his experience of setting up one of the new femtocell AT&T repeaters that promise to improve reception for well-heeled iPhone users... or will they?

Good times for Charlotte, North Carolina: First AT&T makes Charlotte one of six cities getting a 3G speed boost by the end of 2009. On the heels of that news comes the MicroCell, a device that facilitates AT&T 3G calls where coverage is weak or nonexistent.

How? The MicroCell acts like a miniature cell tower in your home or office. Your 3G phone connects to the MicroCell just like it's any other tower. Voice and messaging traffic is then relayed across your broadband Internet connection. Charlotte is the sole initial test market for AT&T's version of the device, though other carriers are distributing their femtocells more widely.

Here's the full breakdown on pricing:

Purchase Price: $150
Monthly Charge: None

Optional Unlimited Voice Minutes Plan while using MicroCell:

AT&T Customer with both AT&T landline and DSL: Free
Customers with AT&T Landline or DSL: $10 per month
All others: $20 per month

I installed a MicroCell for a friend the other day, and after one small hiccup it's running. But is it everything I hoped it would be?

Setup for the MicroCell is straightforward. Most users will probably connect it via Ethernet to their router, which is exactly what we did. Optionally, the device can be placed between the router and the modem, giving MicroCell traffic priority handling over other Internet connectivity. If you don't have a router, the MicroCell can be plugged directly into your broadband modem and your computer can be connected to the MicroCell.

For those of you who have patiently been waiting to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS with the 3.1 software, your patience is about to pay off. According to MuscleNerd all of the testing is complete and the new PwnageTool is almost ready to be released to the public.

Regarding the iPhone 3GS 3.1 software unlock, if you have already updated to the official 3.1, there still is no known way to unlock your device. In order to unlock the 3.1 software on a iPhone 3GS, this next version of the PwnageTool will be needed to make a custom IPSW file to preserve the 04.26.08 baseband firmware. Again — that older baseband is needed if you plan on unlocking your device successfully.

Stay tuned as we will bring you the news when the latest PwnageTool drops.
