Steve Jobs — CEO of the Decade

Fortune Magazine has named Steve Jobs CEO of the Decade. The Apple co-founder, Apple II, Mac, iPod, iTunes, and iPhone visionary is summed up in suitably dramatic fashion:

Youthful founder gets booted from his company in the 1980s, returns in the 1990s, and in the following decade survives two brushes with death, one securities-law scandal, an also-ran product lineup, and his own often unpleasant demeanor to become the dominant personality in four distinct industries, a billionaire many times over, and CEO of the most valuable company in Silicon Valley.

Congrats Steve! Take a moment between tweaking the last few pixels on the iTablet icons and getting (what we hope is) the massive next generation iPhone HD OLED screen white balance just so, and enjoy.

And if anyone hasn’t seen it yet, get on over to iTunes and watch Jobs’ Stanford Commencement Address. He sums himself up even better than Fortune, of course.

Andy Ihnatko on Verizon Droid “iDon’t” ads: baloney (mostly)

Most American television viewers have been treated recently to endless reruns of Verizon's "iDon't" advertisements. These ads attack the iPhone, playing music that's similar to that played in iPhone ads while displaying a series of messages stating such brilliant and cutting phrases as "iDon't have a real keyboard," "iDon't run simultaneous apps," and so on.

Mac fan and Chicago Sun-Times write Andy Ihnatko was apparently as fed up with the ads as most of us here at TUAW, so he took Verizon to task in a Wednesday column. In the column, he takes on Verizon's claims and for the most part finds them lacking or at least overblown. In describing the faults of the ad campaign, Ihnatko says "Its claims about the limitations of the iPhone are baloney (Mostly.)"

Andy has been testing the new Motorola Droid phone for an upcoming review, and he does like the phone -- a lot. But his take on the ad campaign is right on the mark: "Verizon's 'iDon't' is a terrible commercial. It provokes experienced iPhone users like me to get all Tyra Banks on the phone and the Android 2.0 OS. That can't possibly be good for business."

Don't mess with us iPhone fans, Verizon...

So, you’re an iPhone user — what does that mean for your love life?

  • You prefer gadget lovers to the college educated
  • 1/3rd of you have dumped someone over SMS or email
  • 1/3rd of you have outdated gadgets were a turn-off
  • 1/5th of you have admitted to using the iPhone to get your porn-on (twice as many as BlackBerry users)
  • 1/4th of you have dumped someone for using their own mobile too much.

So, iPhone users, are they painting a fair picture?

iPhone in China — Only 5000 Served?

iPhone 3G Bruce Lee

The iPhone finally went on sale in China last week, and according to Business Week, only 5000 appear to have been sold.

Scratch that. Do over. An overly expensive, Wi-Fi crippled version of the iPhone eventually went on sale in China, where over 2 million cheaper, unlocked, gray-market iPhones with functioning Wi-Fi have already been sold over the last couple years, and weren’t found to be terribly competitive?

Either way, China remains a billion-user market, and Apple needed to get a foot in the door. Sure, they likely wanted a much bigger initial foot, but when the next version of China Unicom’s iPhone, with Wi-Fi (and hopefully more competitive rates) becomes available, maybe… they’ll see some slow, steady growth in that general direction?

[Thanks Icebike for the tip!]

Apple Seeking iPhone OS Platform Security Manager: What does this mean for Jailbreaking?

Apple is currently hiring and is in search of an iPhone OS platform security manager. What does the particular job consist of? Here is the low down:

The team is responsible for secure booting and installation of the OS, partitioning and hardening of security domains within the OS, cryptographic services, and risk analysis of security threats. The team is made up of a variety of security experts with backgrounds in system security and reverse engineering.

The more secure Apple makes the OS the harder it will become to find and use a particular exploit — for good, like our beloved jailbreak, or for evil, like we’ve seen with computer viruses, malware, etc.

Now don’t get us wrong, we are pretty sure that one person will not do away with our beloved jailbreak but this does raise some questions. Is Apple really concerned popular mobile devices will get attacked the way PCs do today? Or are they just done putting the practice of preventing jailbreaking (and the unlocking and app piracy that sometimes goes with it) on the back burner?

What do you think this may mean for the future of the jailbreak if anything? Sound off in the comments below!

iPhone Number One in Touch Screen Phones

While there are still quite a few die hard traditional phone users out there, the smart phones have all but taken over the industry. Blackberry and the iPhone are far and away the two most popular, but while most Blackberries still feature a keyboard, the iPhone is strictly a touch screen. Its success [...]
