Google Nexus One stands with iPhone and Hero, interface gets a 5-minute walkthrough

The Google Nexus One trickle continues. Today's two menu items include a 5-minute demonstration of the Android 2.1 interface -- shaky, sure, but it's a pretty thorough rundown of all the menus. We're also serving up some low-resolution picture comparisons of the Nexus One laying side-by-side with the iPhone and HTC Hero. It still eludes us how all these leaking parties don't seem to have in their possession a decent DSLR or camcorder (feel free to give us a buzz, we'll gladly help out). Video after the break.

Nielsen stats: a lot of iPhones out there, but also a lot of everything else

Posted on by Chris Ziegler.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Fact: most phones last. Thing is, for us (and likely many of you), they last far longer than our clinically-diagnosed Gadget Attention Deficit Disorder would ever tolerate -- but for your dad, your sister, your college buddy with the hand-me-down ZEOS Pantera running Windows 95, or anyone weary of re-upping a two-year commitment, a handset can easily become a serious long-term investment. That helps explain why Motorola's venerable RAZR series remains staggeringly high on Nielsen's latest US phone usage report -- third place, to be exact, at 2.3 percent of all subscribers behind the iPhone 3G at 4 percent and RIM's BlackBerry Curve line at 3.7 percent. Needless to say, that doesn't mean the ancient V3 line is still in third place for sales -- it's more a testament to the staggeringly huge RAZR user base Moto managed to develop over the years, many of whom scored their phones at sub-$100 price points as an attractive, midrange value in the phone's twilight and have no intention of upgrading any time soon if they don't have to. Maybe the most interesting part of this is that two V3 variants are also topping 2009's most-recycled list, so they're definitely getting taken out of circulation -- it just might take a few years yet before you don't know anyone that uses one, that's all.

Intelligent and insightful mobile movie reviews: the Empire Movie Guide app

Posted on by Mel Martin.

Empire is a venerable British movie magazine that has amassed quite a library of film reviews since it was first published more than 20 years ago. Their reviews tend to be aimed at the enthusiastic film buff, rather than academics. I have always found the reviews entertaining and a worthwhile read.

Now, the entire Empire archive has come to the iPhone and iPod touch with the Empire Movie Guide [iTunes link]. The US$4.99, 8.9 MB app puts all of the reviews on your phone without need for a data connection. As a nice bonus, Empire grabs the most recently published reviews over the air when you are connected and launch the app.

The Empire app contains about 9,000 reviews, searchable by actor, director, genre, writers, or release dates. Want to share the reviews with friends? Empire allows sharing via email, Facebook, and Twitter.

If a movie or soundtrack is available in the iTunes store, the review provides a purchase link. The Empire Movie Guide won't help you find movie times or locations, but it does put a library of well-written reviews in your hand.

iPhone app helps Tasmanian cops nab crooks

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

Tasmanian cops are using some pretty sophisticated technology to catch criminals down there -- they have hardware in their cars now that will not only catch pictures of criminals, but upload them to a database, track down any outstanding warrants or other red flags, and update GPS information and location data of where the checks are made. Oh, and there's apparently an app for that. When the cops realized that they could do all of those same functions with department-issued iPhones, they built an app that replicates the functionality seen in the cop cars. So even while the police are walking a beat, they can pull out an iPhone and check up on any drivers they happen to see.

Very interesting. Unfortunately, there's not much information available about how long it took them to build the app, or just who put it all together -- the article from Australia's The Mercury seems mostly intended as a warning to criminals everywhere that even though a cop may not recognize you, an iPhone will. But this is just another reminder that we're all walking around with a little handheld device that has the ability to replace most of the technology we were using just a few years ago. When we hear about a cop making an arrest while on a phone call, we'll let you know.

Sketches 2 available now for creating even better art on your iPhone

Our friends at LateNiteSoft sent word that they've updated Sketches, one of the first iPhone apps I ever picked up, to version 2.0. The app has been released [iTunes link] as an entirely new download, so even upgraders from version 1 will have to pay the current price of $1.99. LateNiteSoft tells us that upgrade price is temporary -- they plan to keep the original app on the store as "Sketches Classic" for 99 cents, and eventually the price of the new version will go up a few more bucks. If you want to upgrade, go grab Sketches 2 as soon as you can.

Tthe new app offers a number of improvements, including a completely revamped UI designed to quickly run through large collections. The new UI also keeps tools handy, but out of the way, as you use them. As you can see in the screen shots above, all the tools are stashed at the bottom of the screen instead of covering up your picture while you're working on it. Sketches 2 now lets you paint using brushes, which makes for some nice choices in terms of marking pictures, canvas, maps, or whatever else you choose as a background in the app. The zoom functionality has been updated, with new gestures and a smoother shape adjustment interface. As with the original Sketches app, you can share and export your work however you like. You can use the app to create a masterpiece and then tweet about it, or just mark some notes on a map and send it off to a friend.

Sketches 1 was a bargain back when I picked it up for $7 in the earliest days of the App Store, and this new version adds even more features at less than half the price. If you have any inkling about making some art on your iPhone, it's a solid buy.

iPhone 4.0 Spotted in App Analytics!

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

Last time iPhone 4.0 was spotted in a server log, now it’s been seen again in a developer’s analytics data. Sure, this stuff can and will be faked, but given that Apple typically introduces new OS versions in March, and that iPhone 3.2 is still nowhere to be seen, maybe they are concentrating on 4.0 and early tests are already underway?

‘Tis the season to see rumors, if nothing else!

Nielson reports that the iPhone 3G is the most popular phone in the US with 4% “embedded base of all subscribers”.

BOGO-buoyed BlackBerrys come in a close second, followed by Motorola’s monstrous RAZR. Now that’s the sheer-face-of-the-cliff-style functionality drop-off right there, isn’t it?

Developers: Is iTunes Connect Down for You?

iTunes Connect Down

iTunes Connect, the online portal developers use to upload and manage their App Store apps, appears to be down for the moment.

Apple had previously announced that iTunes Connect would be unavailable over the holidays between Dec. 23 and 28, but did someone jump the gun? Hit the eggnog a wee bit early? Could just be a server down — it is the age of the cloud, after all.

Or is it every developer and their team trying to wedge in some last minute app-tivity before the big close? DDoS by holiday?

If you’re a developer and your iTunes is suddenly won’t-Connect, let us know, and let us know when it’s back up. Otherwise, we guess your holidays start early :-/

ZOMG!1!1! Unreal Engine 3 Running on iPhone!

unreal-iphone-12-22-09

Epic, makers of a little game called Gears of War 2, have shown off their Unreal Engine 3… on an iPhone (and iPod touch!). No games announced using it yet, but if there is any Power of Awesome in this ‘verse, there will be and soon! Apparently, Epic will also be bringing the Unreal Engine 3 to other platforms in the new year as well, starting off with another platform announcement at CES in January.

2010 should be an interesting year for mobile gaming!

iPhone Tops List of Most-Used Mobile Phones in U.S.

Unreal Engine 3 running on the iPod touch

Whenever you talk about games on a mobile platform, you usually have to also mention that while things like high-end 3D graphics are certainly possible, there are usually some concessions that have to be made. But in the case of the iPhone, perhaps not: Epic Games has apparently been showing Anandtech their Unreal Engine 3 on Apple's handheld, the same graphical engine that runs modern console hits like Gears of War 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum. There's even video, and the thing looks pretty darn incredible. It's possible that in the hands of a skilled developer, you could have a very impressive realistic graphical game running on the iPhone hardware.

Some of the iPhone hardware, that is -- the engine was shown off on the 3GS and the 3rd generation iPod touch, so only those have the speed and power (and the OpenGL ES 2.0) to pull this off. But it's impressive nevertheless. Epic hasn't licensed this version of the engine yet as far as we know, but they promise to show off more in the future, so we'll be keeping an eye out. One more version of the iPhone, and we might be looking at games that can compete graphically with even modern consoles.
