Regarding the iPhone in NYC — AT&T “Periodically Modifies Promotions and Distribution Channels”.

iPhone Out of Stock

So the internets are exploding thanks to a Consumerist article that involved not being able to order an iPhone in New York City via AT&T’s website.

AT&T has apparently found a workable solution to the reported data congestion in New York City. They’ve quietly stopped selling the iPhone to customers in the New York metropolitan area, at least from their web site.

TechCrunch doesn’t seem to be having too much trouble finding them and simply suggests AT&T’s online system pulls from a different warehouse and seems to be out of stock in the area:

So if you really want to buy an iPhone in New York City, go to an AT&T store, or an Apple Store. Or try Apple’s website. That seems to be taking orders for New York City residents just fine ( I got up to the checkout).

TiPb contacted AT&T PR and got the following, which we’re grateful for given the holidays, the weekend, and the late hour, though it is a tad on the cryptic side:

“We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels.”

Hopefully the dust will settle and either the NYC iPhone ordering system will get replenished, or something more concrete will come from AT&T.

Meanwhile, feel free to sound off in the comments!

AT&T suspends online iPhone sales in New York City, reasons still unclear

Posted on by Nilay Patel.

Here's a Sunday night conundrum for you: it's no longer possible to purchase an iPhone from AT&T's online store if you live in New York City, and as of right now, the carrier isn't saying why. Making matters worse, some online customer service reps have apparently gone rogue in providing explanations to curious would-be customers and the occasional inquisitive blogger -- the Consumerist was told that NYC wasn't "ready for the iPhone," and a few others (including us) were fed a line about credit card fraud causing a ban on online sales. The fraud explanation would actually make sense, considering NYC-area Apple and AT&T stores all have the phone in stock and are happily selling them, but Ma Bell still hasn't put this story to bed with an official explanation -- all we've heard so far is the charmingly generic "We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels." Way to quell a fire with the gasoline of ambiguity, friends. Anyway, if you want an iPhone in New York City right this instant, you should start walking to the 24-hour Fifth Avenue Apple Store, taking the opportunity to assess your priorities and fundamental sense of purpose along the way. The rest of us will continue spending a reasonable percentage of our income on housing.

Apple saw 60,000 first-day iPhone sales in S.Korea

Posted on by Top iPhone News.

Apple has seen about 60,000 units of iPhones sold in South Korea on its debut on Saturday, which is pretty good as the nation has already reported 400,000 smartphones sales in the third quarter. The number, though far away from the one million sales in the U.S. for the iPhone 3GS, ...

Breaking: AT&T website stops selling iPhones in New York City?

What kind of Christmas present is this? The Consumerist is reporting that AT&T has stopped selling the iPhone in the New York metropolitan area, at least via the company's website, due to high data congestion (or possibly due to online fraud). Stephen in Brooklyn says he made the discovery while shopping on AT&T's website for an iPhone today:
I was on the AT&T Wireless website trying to get an iPhone. However, when I put in my zip code 11231, the site says the iPhone is unavailable. This seemed a little odd so I started punching in other famous zip codes: 90210, 60609 (spiegel catalog), 02134 (zoom, an old children's show).
For theses cities, LA, Chicago, Boston, iPhone is available. Then I looked up some other zip codes: Dallas, Miami, St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Francisco. All those cities are ok. Then I started putting in more NYC zip codes: midtown, Staten Island, the Bronx...no iPhone available.
This is weird...AT&T has cut off New York City.
Laura Northrup at the Consumerist contacted AT&T Customer Service to check if the lack of iPhone availability in New York City was a website glitch or a planned disruption. The online rep she chatted with confirmed that the phone was indeed not being sold to New Yorkers via the website, although it remains available via the Apple store website and via both Apple and AT&T physical stores. Mashable, BoyGeniusReport, and Gizmodo have also verified with AT&T Customer Support that the iPhone is indeed not available through website order in New York City.

This is sure to piss off thousands of potential customers in NYC. Let's just hope AT&T Media Relations releases a statement clarifying when the ban will be lifted and if it will happen in any other cities. In the meantime, just think of this as more fuel for the fire as to why Verizon should have the iPhone; and of course, NYC iPhone shoppers can continue to pick up iPhones at the Apple Stores or at the AT&T outlets in the city.

MobileMe Down 09/12/27

According to MobileMe System Status, Mac Preferences, Windows Control Panel, iChat, and the www.me.com WebApps are down for the count. (Just how hard did they hit the eggnog over the last few days?)

Still, they’re keeping some pretense of holiday spirit, or irony:

All other MobileMe services are online and fully operational

Let us know how badly you’re affected, and when things start going smoothly for you again.

GV Mobile 2.0 for iPhone Coming Soon to Cydia

Boy Genius scored a sneak peak of a Google Voice client, GV Mobile 2.0, which will be available in the near future on Cydia to anyone with a jailbroken iPhone. GV Mobile is an application which allows your iPhone to use all of the features that comes with Google Voice and was actually in the App Store for a short period before Apple decided to yank it along with rejecting Google’s very own application. After being pulled, the developer introduced GV Mobile to Cydia and offered up his hard work to anyone with a jailbroken iPhone.

We’ve used GV Mobile since it’s release and while it worked fairly well, it seemed clunky and buggy at times. Boy Genius is reporting that 2.0 is much more refined and polished than the previous version.

“We’re really excited to tell you about it, too. It has been polished and refined — it had an injection of features — and we love using it, even in its non-final and beta form. For starters, dialed calls connect almost instantly, your iPhone contacts and favorites are accessible right within the app, there’s voicemail transcription viewing, and even multiple Google Voice account support. Advanced features like call forwarding phones, do not disturb settings as well automatic syncing, and even Growl support are on the to-do list.”

We can only hope that Apple rethinks their decision and allow this application along with Google’s very of Google Voice application into the App Store. Until then, jailbreak away…

Quick App: Night of the Living Dead (N.O.T.L.D.)

We are very aware that this application may not be for all of our readers, but for those of you who are horror movie fanatics, N.O.T.L.D. [$0.99 - iTunes Link] is an app for you. Never again will you have to leave your home without your very own copy of George Romero’s 1968 ‘zombie’ classic, Night of the Living Dead.

This app includes the original and alternate movie posters, a streaming version of the movie which is broken down in chapters (streams perfectly fine on AT&T’s 3G data network), and an wiki page detailing anything you’d like to know about this classic films history.

If you have never watched a horror classic such as this and you enjoy good horror flicks, I highly recommend checking this film out and why not view it directly on your iPhone?!

iPhone Review from WMExperts’ Phil — Smartphone Round Robin

I’m an iPhone. Phil’s a Windows Phone. Typically the jokes about creaky old, stylus and resistive bound, UI impaired smartphones of generations past would start there, but this time Phil’s strapped with the HTC HD2 and not only are we unable to poke fun — we’re afraid to. But now that he’s armed with the Windows Phone equivalent of an ICBM, how will he treat our iPhone?

Given the amazing help our TiPb Forum members provided him, I’m hoping the answer is “well”. To find out, head on over and read Phil’s complete iPhone from a Windows Mobile perspective review and then let him (and us!) know what you think.

Did he nail it or did he fail it? Remember, you can still add a reply to the forums for another chance to win a brand new iPhone 3GS! (Or a brand new BlackBerry if you help me out on the CrackBerry Forums).

Speaking of me — I’m about to jump the next star freighter bound for Android Central, holding out for a sassy princess Hero and wondering who’s looking for that Droid. Empire-style sequel or Phantom-mess prequel? Watch for my video, under the googley guidance of Casey Chan, coming Monday.
