Isaac Newton logo on Google
No, the falling Apple logo on the Google hompage doesn’t have anything to do with Apple Inc. It is there to celebrate the birthday of Sir Isaac Newton. I believe this is the first time I’ve ever seen Google use an animated logo on their front page. I like it! Google is using javascript so the animation should work on most browsers. I tried it on my iPhone using the Safari browser and it does work!

To view the Isaac Newton Google Doodle on your iPhone just go to http://www.google.com and click View Google in: Classic. The homepage will come up and you will see the Apple logo falling down.

TiPb at CES 2010!

tipb_at_ces_2010

That’s right TiPb ‘verse, for the first time ever I’m hitting CES with the rest of the Smartphone Experts crew — because for the first time ever, Apple’s not at Macworld, Macworld isn’t in January, and iPhone stuff will be at CES!

If you’re going to be there as well, if you’re an App Store developer, an accessory maker, a fellow blogger, an Apple engineer with a secret HD iPhone or tablet-esque device to leak, or — and especially — a fellow TiPb member, ping me and let me know. I’m looking to fit in as much as is inhumanly possible.

All major iPhone and related stories will of course go up right here, and as you know there are a ton of ways to follow TiPb’s feed.

I’ll also be tweeting everything else meta-style from @reneritchie, including whatever behind the scenes shenanigans and competitive insights I can sneak out. (tag-line, nothing will stay in Vegas!)

Also keep an eye out for our editor-in-chief Dieter Bohn (@backlon), Kevin Michaluk (@crackberrykevin), Matt Miller (@palmsolo), Phil Nickinson (@philnickinson) as they cover everything else for CrackBerry.com, PreCentral.net, NokiaExperts.com, AndroidCentral.com, and WMExperts.com, as well as our Round Robin co-hort, Mickey Papillon (@tcpj_mickey) who might just get us back on the mic again.

See ya there, or we’ll bring it to ya here!

Isaac Newton on Google logo with dropping Apple

Isaac Newton Google logo
As I was browsing Google today I noticed a new logo which Google created to honor Sir Isaac Newton. The logo has an animated falling Apple and it’s missing an “o” from it. Google usually decorates their logo whenever they want to celebrate a special day, and today happens to be one of them. Isaac Newton was born on January 4.

Isaac Newton is well known for his three laws of motion. Google created an animation of the falling Apple because that is what inspired him to come up with the gravitational formula. I’m posting it here because I know many of you here use Google to find our website, and you will definitely wonder why the logo is on Google.

Last week was a good one as usual for SPE, but next week we’ll be blowing the walls out for CES: expect plenty of CES coverage from all of our sites. This year we’ll have our biggest team ever at the show and are pumped up. All that CES coverage means we’ll be taking the week off from the Smartphone Round Robin (excepting another group podcast on The Cell Phone Junkie, stay tuned!).

When you're trying to live a more healthy lifestyle, it takes more than just watching your weight and exercising. Experts agree that you should eat a balanced diet, drink at least eight glasses of water per day, sleep well, and take nutritional supplements.

That's the idea behind Healthy Me [US$0.99, iTunes Link] from developer Teddy Newell. Healthy Me features a simple and colorful interface for watching your weight approach your goal as well as tracking how many servings of the major food groups you've eaten, whether or not you exercised, and more.

Since it's always nice to receive positive feedback when you've done something good for your body, Healthy Me gives you gold stars for achieving certain goals, as well as providing positive reinforcement through happy messages. The background of the app changes throughout the day, and there are even fun sound effects that play as you enter your daily info.

Newell has provided TUAW with 20 promo codes to give away, so you have a chance to win Healthy Me. The details follow:
  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment telling us if you made a health-related New Year's resolution and if so, what that resolution is.
  • The comment must be left before Monday, January 4, 2009, 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Twenty winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prizes: Promo Code for one copy of Healthy Me (Value: US$0.99)
  • Click Here for complete Official Rules.
My next wish is for an app that I can just point my iPhone camera at to see how many calories I'm about to consume. Developers -- get to work!

5 iPhone apps that will rock on a tablet

Posted on by Dave Caolo.

Until we're holding our Apple tablets in our hands, we can only speculate as to what the next wondergadget will do. Still, it's safe to assume that the tablet will offer more than web browsing from the bathroom. With that in mind, let's have a little fun. Here are five iPhone apps that would be a joy to use on a large, touch-screen device.

Panelfly

My favorite comic app [iTunes link] is just begging for a larger format. When first launched, Panelfly presents four options across two layouts. In portrait mode, it lists your library of comics, bookmarks, news and finally the Panelfly store. In landscape, you can flick through your library and tap any title to begin reading.

Reading a comic is a pleasure. Simply tap the right-hand side of the screen to move from element to element (like bits of dialogue or important parts of the image). This "narrative navigation" leads you through the story as opposed to just moving through the pages. You can flick pages back and forth, of course, but the built-in navigation is the best way to go, and all you need to do is tap the page.

Adding a bookmark or bringing up additional information is just as easy. Simply tap the middle of a page to bring up three options: add a bookmark, more info on a given issue or an overview of all pages.

While in the store, you can browse featured comics, top tens, genres and publishers. Most cost about a dollar and there are even some freebies. Every issue can be downloaded with a tap and is ready for reading in seconds.

Panelfly is nice on the iPhone and would be stellar on something the size of a legal pad of paper. With its beautiful and intuitive UI, clever navigation and inexpensive, access-anywhere store, it's just the kind of thing a comic fan would use during a commute or a lazy afternoon. And what artist wouldn't rather have his or her art on a nice, big screen? Count me in for Panelfly for the tablet.

Arment, Siracusa Weigh in on Apple iTablet

iTablet Concept

Previously we linked to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, who felt Apple was going to redefine the experience of personal computing with their (perhaps) upcoming iTablet/iSlate, and now Marco Arment of Tumblr and Instapaper, and John Siracusa of Ars Technica share their thoughts as well.

Arment starts off laying out the pros and cons of the iPhone and MacBook form factors and functions, and the struggle other devices have had trying to fill the in-between with a tablet. As to Apple’s take:

I see two possible outcomes: either Apple has come up with a radical new input method for this form-factor that will overcome the fundamental problems that made every other similar device suck, or the Tablet isn’t this form-factor.

(Sure, there’s a third possibility: that Apple is repeating the mistakes of similar products and making their own JooJoo or Foleo. But that’s too unlikely — and stupid — for me to take seriously.)

He predicts the first, a radical new input method.

Siracusa sticks to what is either already known (not much) or can be inferred by the realities of available technology, Apple’s huge iTunes customer base, massive iPhone developer pool, and established relationships with content providers.

The Apple tablet will have a color, video-capable touchscreen, about 10 inches diagonal. It will have flash storage, WiFi networking, and few ports and hardware buttons. There will be a software keyboard. Its operating system will be based on the same core as Mac OS X and iPhone OS, and its GUI API will be an evolution of Cocoa Touch. The platform will (eventually) be open to third-party developers. You will be able to buy media and applications right on the device using your existing iTunes account. Some of that media will be new territory for Apple: print media like magazines, newspapers, and books.

His “good bets” include a custom PA Semi chipset, and iTunes LP-like format and SDK for print media content. His “wildcard” is whether or not the first version with have 3G. Either way, he sees no surprises in hardware, but reminds us that software has far fewer limitations.

Take a read of both and let us know if either changes what you expect Apple to do with the iTablet (when and if they release it).
