Munster: Apple will sell more than 36 million iPhones worldwide in 2010

The wizard of tech on Wall Street, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, is bullish on AAPL.

Not only does the senior research analyst (who looks nothing like our artistic portrait at right) project that the company will sell 36 million iPhones in 2010, but he believes that the number is conservative for international sales and doesn't take into account any expansion to other U.S. cell carriers -- Verizon, for instance. Munster's prognostications were published in a note to investors this morning, where he noted that this will be the first full year of sales with new carriers in the U.K., Canada, and France, and also the first full year of sales in China.

Munster also believes that a new iPhone model will arrive around the usual June - July time frame, and that will drive sales as well. While the estimates seem rather optimistic, Munster says that his models are actually quite conservative, particularly when international sales are taken into account. For example, the Piper Jaffray models show that AT&T alone will sell 15.8 million iPhones to their customer base of 82.5 million customers, while a composite figure for three Russian carriers shows 1.8 million iPhones being sold to a combined base of 160 million subscribers.

Looking ahead for calendar year 2011, Munster sees a worldwide total sales figure of 48.5 million iPhones, once again based on a model that he considers conservative.

Review: Case-Mate Smooth Case for iPhone 3G/3GS

You just got your new iPhone for Christmas and you may have been wondering what case you should purchase to protect your new gift. I’m here to tell you if you are in the market for a slider case the Case-Mate Smooth for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS [TiPb Store Link - $27.95] is one to consider. For the full review follow me after the break!

Inside the package you obviously get the case itself but you also get a crystal clear screen protector along with a small microfiber cleaning cloth. I personally choose not to use them but it’s a nice gesture that I’m sure some of you can take advantage of them. The Case-Mate Smooth feels as it’s name describes – smooth. With it’s soft to the touch matte finish and with very minimal bulk added, it feels great in the hand. Even better is that offers a decent amount of grip without the sticky finish. You don’t have to worry about a ton of dust or having a hard time removing your iPhone from you pocket or purse.

Like a majority of other sliders the Case-Mate Smooth comes in two separate pieces that easily slide on your iPhone and lock securely together. The major difference I noticed was that this particular case is the installation, it is much easier to slide on and off than most other cases. In more or less words, it fits perfectly. It slides on easy enough that you do not have to worry about scratching the back of the phone or the chrome bezel.

smooth_2

On the negative front, some may feel the case simply does not cover enough area of the phone as the complete top of your phone is unprotected. I’m sure Case-Mate feels some would like access to the sim card tray but I am not one of them. All of the other ports you would expect to be accessible are. Things like the volume control, power button, and headphone jack are all can easily accessed.

Smooth_3

Admittedly slider cases generally are my least favorite to use out of all of the various types on the market today. This really held true until I was given the chance to test out the Case-Mate Sooth case [TiPb Store Link] and then my opinion changed. Sure there are a few minor annoyances but it’s a very solid effort. All other slider case manufactures need to take note here follow Case-Mate’s lead.

Billings Touch hits the App Store

We mentioned its imminent arrival a few days back, and now it's here: Billings Touch [iTunes link] hit the App Store last night (Free, $15 in-app upgrade for full functionality). It's packed with time and expense tracking features, client management, invoicing, and other necessities of the freelancer/small businessperson. It's packaged to go, too.

Billings Touch syncs with the desktop version of Billings over WiFi, but one of the coolest things about it is that it's a standalone app. Without any help from its older sibling, it can handle everything a professional on-the-go would need to get paid. Track your mileage and your expenses, add clients ... then track your time (timers run even when the app is closed), add fixed-price slips, put it all together and send a professional-looking invoice right from your phone. Mark your payments received and Billings Touch will do some bookkeeping for you, and keep you posted about who's overdue and what's coming up.

Billings Touch also implements the "Blueprints" functionality from the desktop version, allowing you to create presets for your work slips. Include the title of the task, the rate, etc. and making new slips can be just a quick tap of the finger, ready to start timing. That's especially important on the iPhone because time spent typing out task names on your little keyboard is rarely billable.

I do wish I could add a receipt photo to my expense slips, and WebDAV sync would be killer, but this app really doesn't leave me wanting. I've beta tested it for a while now, and I can happily say that it's an amazing companion to Billings, and a complete package on its own. My opinion after trying just about everything on the market: Billings and Billings Touch make an unbeatable pair, and this is the time-tracking app to use if you want a complete, professional solution from client contact and estimate to invoice and statements.

Billings Touch is a free download on the App Store, and it comes with a good amount of functionality. However, syncing and invoicing require an in-app purchase of $15US, but it's a pretty cool way to let you try out the app before you make a purchase. Billings on the desktop remains priced at a competitive $39.99US. Have a peek at the gallery for an overview of the interface and some of Billing Touch's capabilities.

Microsoft’s Ballmer to Try and Pre-empt Apple, Introduce HP Tablet Tonight?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.

bing_yahoo_iphone_lost

So the rumor is Steve is about to introduce a new tablet device — no, not Steve Jobs of Apple, but his nemesis Steve Ballmer of Microsoft — and he’s rumored to be doing it tonight at CES!

Our sibling site, WMExperts, has the details and Dieter and Phil will be there live covering Ballmer’s keynote at 9:30pm ET, 6:30pm PT, 2:30am GT (tomorrow morning, yeah?)

Will it be the crazy courier concept we saw before? More Tablet PC tomfoolery? Surface-to-go? And if Apple is unicorns, is this the pegasus?

And does this have any effect on Apple’s rumored iTablet show on Jan. 27? Or does Apple just ignore what everyone else is doing, as usual, and show up with what they got?

iPhone Rene and Android Casey

A long time ago on a blog far, far away, Casey Chan wrote about the iPhone. Then there was a great disturbance in the ’sphere and he ended up editing Android Central and embracing the dark side of the G1. Easily, seductively, his powers grew with the Hero and now the insidious DROID itself. But a new hope emerged in the form of the 2009 Smartphone Round Robin, which forced him to put down the evil red eye of Google (and their massive Nexus One coverage!) and pick up the brightly sided iPhone 3GS. Did he restore balance to his mellow?

Given the Jedi-level help our TiPb Forum masters, certainly unlearn he must. Right? Well, take a read of his final iPhone from an Android perspective review and let us know — what forever controls his destiny?

Also, your only hope to win a brand new iPhone 3GS is to head on over to that thread linked above and drop a new reply every day. (Or a brand new Android device if you help me out on the Android Central Forums — and I’ve also snuck into the WMExperts Forums a tad early to get a jump start on next week!)

And for all the other videos, reviews, and contest threads (there are 6 smartphones up for grabs after all!) keep your browsers locked on smartphoneroundrobin.com!

Hulu Coming in a Few Months to US iPhone App Store!

Hulu for iPhone via Silicon Alley Insider

Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that an honest-to-Baldwin Hulu for iPhone is being readied for the iPhone and iPod touch, and should be in the iTunes App Store in a few months. And the big news is, it sounds like it will work over 3G!

Why would Apple and AT&T approve this app, which will use up a lot of bandwidth and compete with Apple’s iTunes video store? Because it will help sell iPhones, iPod touches, and AT&T subscriptions. And that’s the whole point of the App Store. (And if we were Hulu, we’d offer Apple and/or AT&T an ad revenue-sharing deal, too.)

Modder merges Bose headphones with inline Apple remote, shows you how
Everybody knows that Apple's default headphones aren't the best, and while many would argue that those from Bose aren't exactly top-notch either, they're surely a step up. What if you want Cupertino's inline controls and some over-the-ear isolation from Framingham's most famous foreign-sounding speaker company? That's what Freddy Deeble wanted, and that's what he achieved. What seems like a challenging feat is actually a reasonably straightforward mod if you have some soldering skills -- and a general disregard for warranties. The whole process is described in a thoroughly helpful video after the break but, as always, don't call us if you wind up with a set of severed wires and a smoldering pile of rosin.

[Thanks, Freddy]
