Sorry, Skype 1.3 [Free - iTunes link], we know you’re trying, at least we think you are, but it’s 2010 now and we have to agree with 9to5mac where’s the push notification and VoIP over 3G?

Maybe Apple hasn’t given you the tools or SDK agreement for VoIP yet, we don’t know, but push notification are good to go, you know?

We appreciate the landscape mode of IM, the hints and tips, the general performance improvements, the call quality indicator, and the call drop after hold fix, really we do, but you’re one of the premiere apps in your class — we know you can knock this app out of the park.

Nexus One Video Review — The Competition

Nexus_One

I had a chance to use Dieter’s Nexus One during CES 2010, and while I’ve shared my thoughts already, Android Central’s Phil Nickinson has just put up a complete Nexus One video review of his own. While I am jealous at how often they (and he!) get new devices to play with, I’m not jealous at how much reviewing he has to do. Phew!

Check out his video, then come on back and tell us what you think — how does the Nexus One measure up?

Google Reader for iPhone Update

Our sibling site PreCentral.net pointed out that the Google Reader Blog has announced some updates for their mobile optimized site. While they show it off on the iPhone’s Safari, it’ll work fine on any WebKit browser:

The interface is improved overall, and the laundry list of new features includes:

  • Support for “liking”, tagging, and sorting feeds by oldest and newest
  • A More/Less feature to reduce clutter
  • Updates to the header bringing it into line with the likes of Gmail and Calendar
  • The addition of a new drop-down menu
  • A new “Recommended Sources” section

Wow, Google is showing no signs of slowing down the pace of WebApp innovation. If you’re a Google Reader user, give it a try and let us know what you think!

In a move designed to match Verizon’s recent price drop, AT&T has announced a new $100 unlimited voice/data plan for iPhone users, though it doesn’t cover SMS which is still an extra $20 for unlimited. Here’s the relevant passage from the presser:

  • All smartphone customers, including iPhone customers, may now buy unlimited voice and data for $99.99. For smartphone customers with Family Talk plans (prices assume 2 smartphones), unlimited voice and data is now available for $179.99. Anyone tempted to grab the new plan?

Steve Jobs Thinks “Mobile Ads Suck”, Intends iTunes-style Fix?

iphone_vs_android_kill_switch

BusinessWeek is reporting that, according to the cliched “source familiar with the situation”, Apple CES Steve Jobs thinks “mobile ads suck” in their current form (oh, hai, Google!) and intends to do for them what he did for music with iTunes and mobile with the iPhone — revolutionize it.

The sources did not reveal specific plans at Apple but say there are several possible ad approaches. Apple could employ its user data and geo-location technology to make ads more relevant, so that a user cruising the mobile Web at lunchtime could receive an ad for specials at a nearby restaurant. It could also use the iPhone’s capabilities in creative ways—say, having someone shake the device to win a rebate the same way they do to roll dice in games.

If the present belongs to Google and desktop-based web search advertising, but the future is mobile and it looks like that battle ground is going to be contested, and by Apple of all companies.

Do they have a shot?

[Thanks to the Reptile for the tip!]

Developer Leaks Imminent iPhone 4.0? Maybe, Maybe Not.

CNET is reporting, and others are picking up, that a developer sent them a note saying:

“Just wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve submitted an updated app for the new iPhone OS 4.0 software.”

Well, TiPb got a note from a developer worded exactly the same way:

I’ve sent you some news about [redacted] before, but just wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve submitted an updated app for the new iPhone OS 4.0 software.

However, we also got a personal note from the developer that read:

We just released [redacted] 4.0 for iPhone.

And if you follow the link to their blog:

[Redacted] 4.0 has been released!

TiPb feels there’s a strong chance we will indeed see the first iPhone 4.0 beta soon, perhaps at Apple’s rumored January 27th event, and while this could be a “leak”, it looks to us like it could just as easily have been a wrongly worded press mailing. It’s not their application for iPhone 4.0, it’s version 4.0 of their application for the current iPhone OS.

What do you think?

Apple rumor roundup: iPhone patent 4.0 edition

Posted on by Nilay Patel.
Categories: Uncategorized.
On today's edition of the never-ending Apple rumor roundup, we take a quick detour into the murky realm of the United States patent database, topped off with a charming unsourced tip and some delightful analyst conjecture. Let's blaze.

The rumor: A recent Apple patent application for a capacitive touchscreen-specific stylus may or may not mean The Tablet uses a stylus for input.
Our take: We've already promised to eat our hat if Apple puts a removable battery in the iPhone, so what's next? A shoe? We will eat a shoe if Steve Jobs introduces a product that requires the use of a stylus. Besides, this product already exists: it's called the Pogo Stylus, and it's not exactly rocking minds (although we are intrigued by Inklet). Apple likes to file silly broad patent applications and see what it can get away with -- it's never been wise to read too much into them.

The rumor: Another Apple patent application hints that portable DVR functionality is coming to the iPod / iPhone -- you'll be able to grab TV and radio content from cable, satellite, OTA, or using "services" with your portable device and then load that into iTunes. Not only will you be able to connect new iPods to a cable box to record shows -- channel changing and everything -- but Apple's going to release an accessory for older iPods to enable this functionality as well.
Our take: This would be like a dream come true for the consumer, and a crazy heroin nightmare for Apple to actually implement -- can you imagine an iPod with a freaking CableCARD slot? Neither can we. Besides, it's not like Apple to push content sales from anything other than the iTunes Store, and it's especially not like Apple to extend functionality to older iPods when it can just release a newer one in a slightly different metallic finish. Next!

Apple Co-Founder Woz Did Not Ditch iPhone for Google’s Nexus One

Yesterday NBC Bay Area reported (and Android Central gloated!) that Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak, had replaced his iPhone for the big bark and less bite Google/HTC Nexus One. TiPb never believed Woz would ever relinquish his beloved iPhone and, sure enough, NBC Bay Area has now updated their story:

“I have two iPhones, sometimes I wear a Droid on my belt, and also a Nexus One,” said Wozniak. “At any given point, I might have BlackBerrys. My main phone is still an iPhone.”

He sounds like our very own Dieter Bohn just without the BlackBerry. So there you have it folks, Woz has not betrayed us.

Found Footage: Steadicam releasing Smoothee for iPhone 3GS

In the world of professional film and video photography, the Steadicam stabilizing camera mount revolutionized tracking shots by allowing a camera operator to "hand hold" a camera, but keep the camera steady. This Academy Award-winning invention is now available for the rest of us in the form of the Tiffen Steadicam Smoothee for iPhone 3GS.

Designed specifically for the iPhone 3GS, the Steadicam Smoothee weighs a scant 25 ounces and features the same counterweighted construction of the professional models. While no price has been announced for the Smoothee, it's sure to be much less expensive than the pro video and film versions that sell for $50,000 - $60,000.

The promotional video above has several examples of the type of smooth tracking shots that are the signature of Steadicam movies. The fact that Tiffen has chosen the iPhone for a Steadicam model appears to show that the company sees the potential of citizen journalism and movie-making with the platform. One of these would be great for doing TUAW TV Live from Ustream Broadcaster on the floor of Macworld Expo 2010...
