HTML CSS Star Wars Crawl

Speaking of Daring Fireball links and HTML5, Guillermo Esteves has re-created the opening crawl from the original Star Wars using only web-based technologies. It currently runs exclusively on the bleeding-edge WebKit nightly builds for OS X Snow Leopard… and on the built-in iPhone Safari (though it doesn’t look as polished).

That’s right. No Safari Mac. No Safari PC. No Chrome anything, including Android 2.1. No Palm webOS browser. The only production browser (we know of) that you can watch it on right now is the iPhone’s and iPod touch’s MobileSafari… Which is kind of crazy considering it hasn’t been updated since iPhone 3.1.2 back on Oct. 8. Just goes to show how seriously Apple is pushing the web on the iPhone.

So, yeah, words moving away into perspective in your browser, but this is without QuickTime or Flash or anything to strain your bandwidth or burn your battery. Very nice.

YouTube Beta Testing HTML5 Instead of Flash for Video

Last night, Daring Fireball linked to YouTube’s new opt-in beta that allows you to get HTML5 video instead of the traditional Flash-wrapped kind.

Why is this important? HTML5 is an open standard, not owned by any company (including Apple), it’s much lighter on CPU and battery life than Flash, and doesn’t suffer from increasing malware attacks or onerous “cookie”/privacy issues the way Flash does.

And while it may be purely coincidental that this beta comes on the eve of an expected Apple tablet announcement (a device that will surely benefit from better CPU and battery, not to mention security and privacy), it’s interesting to remember that the last big change in YouTube — the move to H.264 — occurred back with the launch of the original iPhone and its YouTube app.

Now, it should be pointed out that the HTML5 beta is only available for YouTube.com proper right now, and not for videos embedded elsewhere. But here’s hoping that’s the next step. (And that Firefox decides to spend some of their Google Search revenue on licensing MP4 so we get a, you know, standard standard).

If that happens, if automatic buffering is fixed, and if other companies follow suit (the way Vimeo and even Microsoft SilverLight are already doing specifically for the iPhone), we could be seeing the beginning of a huge shift in online video, one that will crash headlong into Adobe’s plans for Flash 10.1.

If, if, if. Fair enough. But most of the time when people complain about the lack of Flash on the iPhone, it’s not actually the lack of Flash that bothers them but the fact that a lot of the video they want to see is wrapped up in Flash. If YouTube is an early bellwether that things are changing on that score, and people start getting their videos without Flash, we’re guessing the complaints will in large part evaporate.

Apple rumor roundup: pipe dreams, Lala’s role and Verizon’s iPhone 4G

In case you haven't noticed, things are getting out of hand in the world of Apple rumors. Frankly, it's all we can do to read another one and trudge onward, but hey -- we've no problem with folks putting their reputations on the line here. Let's dig in to the latest pair, shall we?

The rumor: Apple's acquisition of Lala will actually lead to customers having access to an "online locker" for multimedia. This could be a cloud storage location for one's iTunes library, enabling them to have access to their jams and vids even when away from their at-home storage. The trick is that the cloud would only hold the metadata, and streaming would originate from somewhere else on Apple's end.
Our take: Okay, so we want to believe. Just imagine if your next Apple tablet or iPhone knew exactly what songs you owned in iTunes, and at a moment's notice, you could tap into the iTunes store and stream full, unedited versions of those songs from anywhere. Amazing, no? Problem is, the bulk of iTunes libraries aren't made up of content that was purchased in iTunes (or purchased at all). It seems that the best Apple could do would be to negotiate streaming deals for content you've actually purchased within iTunes, which results in a half-baked user experience. Last we checked, Stevie J wasn't much on half-baked user experiences.

The rumor: Astoundingly, the mythical Apple tablet won't be the company's "one more thing" next week; instead, it'll be a refreshed iPhone... that works on Verizon Wireless. Oh, and iPhone OS 4.0. So says Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek, anyway.
Our take: Ha! Apple has never been one to showcase too much at one time, and we're guessing that the outfit would be smart enough to withhold a new iPhone introduction for a separate press event. We don't doubt that a Verizon iPhone is in the works (though an LTE version will be at least a year or two out), but there's no way Jobs steals the tablet's thunder by giving every rabid iPhone user hot sweats when considering the switch to Big Red. Bottom line? Don't bank on it.

At this point, we reckon everyone would be best served by taking a huge step back, a deep breath and one of those so-called "chill pills." Next Wednesday ain't so far away, now is it?

Amazon Releasing Software Development Kit to Bring Apps to Kindle

Ultratimer: a must-have for interval training

While Plain and Simple Software's UltraTimer [iTunes link] can't do your workout for you, it'll certainly provide you some guidance to help you follow your workout.

Let's face it. Working out is hard, and can sometimes get boring -- very boring. Especially when spending half an hour or more on the same machine, be it a treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical trainer. To this end, I've recently taken up interval and circuit training to help liven up my workout.

While planning out interval and circuit training workouts is a fairly straightforward and easy task, following them isn't.

Wait a minute: Which exercise do I do next, and how long do I do it for?

Of the timers that I've tested, UltraTimer is my favorite. Its combination of ease-of-use and functionality make it the benchmark fitness timer app.

At the top of the list is the ability to create multiple sets of timers. Which means that you can have a timer with different intervals for CrossFit, a timer for boxing, or any other unique time-based routine. And each interval within a timer can be set for a specified time period, with corresponding sounds and display options. For example, say my boxing timer has four different intervals: jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts. I'd like to do jabs for a minute, crosses for one and a half minutes, hooks for 45 seconds, and uppercuts for 30 seconds.

In addition, the screen can be customized to display a different color for each interval, which complements its ability to display the name (which you can customize) of the interval, alleviating the need to peer over at your workout sheet.

However, you needn't look at your iPhone either. Besides associating an interval with one of the app's many built-in sounds, you can record your own voice. So, if you want the app to speak the word "uppercuts" when it's time to do them, you just need to record your voice to say "uppercuts." I've found the app's voice features to be a particularly nice feature, as I like to put my iPhone's screen to sleep and listen to music when I work out; UltraTimer will run when you put your iPhone's screen to sleep, and also features controls to play your music.

Creating intervals is facilitated by the ability to copy and paste intervals. So, if you wanted to repeat each of the intervals in the above example, you could just select all four and paste them. Similarly, if you just wanted the first, third and fourth intervals repeated, you can do that as well.

Lastly, the app allows you to share the timers you've created with other iPhones either via Bluetooth or via import/export. In the case of the latter, the app will copy the specified timer's contents onto a clipboard, which others with UltraTimer can import.

UltraTimer is available for purchase at iTunes for $1.99.

Boy Genius‘ sources have been hearing that AT&T has been meeting with their regional executives to discuss network changes that will soon be taking place in order to handle the load of “unannounced” devices that will use “heavy data”.

iTablet and/or 4th generation iPhone perhaps?

“Heavy data” use has led AT&T to talk about tiered data pricing plans in the past. When these “unannounced” devices appear on their network, would you be surprised to see AT&T spring that on us as well?

Final Fantasy I and II coming to iPhone and iPod touch

Just announced at Square Enix's Facebook page: Final Fantasy I and II are coming to an App Store near you. The nearly 20-year-old games have been remastered and re-released a number of times, with versions appearing for just about every platform invented thus far, so it was only a matter of time before they made their way to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Release date and pricing are both TBA, and nothing official has been announced on Square Enix's official site as of yet, but in the meantime, they've posted screenshots, and they look quite excellent. With Final Fantasy XIII coming out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March, going all the way back to the long-running series' beginning on the iPhone sounds like a really fun way to pass the next couple of months.

Thanks to reader Paul M., Jr. for the tip!
