Live from GDC 2010 Rene talks to Jodi and Jacques Ropert of Barefoot Explorers about their upcoming iPhone game, Panda Explorers.
Scheduled to hit the App Store this spring, in addition to maze-style adventure and pets-style casual gameplay, it packs an environmentally conscious message into all those great graphics — Barefoot Explorers will plant four (4) actual, real, live trees on behalf of players for each download of the game.
Check out the video below for details and a look at the beta version of the game.

An updated version of the the preferred game for those who want to create cities and watch them prosper or founder is coming to the iPhone this summer.
SimCity Deluxe from
EA Mobile will have a user interface that improves on the current
Sim City offering, with enhancements that make it look a bit more SimCity 4 on the PC.
SimCity has been popular on the iPhone since it was released in 2008
The game includes different seasons (with appropriate disasters, of course) and 7 starter cities just waiting for you to run them into the ground.
The new version will sport improved frame rates, and the ability to modify terrain with a touch and swipe of your finger.
These type of games go way back. I remember playing
Santa Paravia which was a similar, but considerably more primitive economic simulation, way back when it was on the
TRS-80. Ah, memories.
The new SimCity Deluxe will work on the iPhone and iPod touch, and I reckon that you can count on an iPad version as well.

The prolonged wait for updated MacBook Pros continue without any major hints at when they might arrive. A report last week suggested that a shortage of Intel notebook chips could be contributing to the delay.

9to5Mac
reports that Apple has changed the requirements for buying an off-contract
iPhone in the USA. US buyers have been able to purchase off-contract iPhones at "list price" for quite some time, but they still had to present proof of an AT&T plan at the time of purchase. That requirement has been removed.
For twenty brief, shining minutes, this sounded like the iPhone was being offered
unlocked by Apple, which would have been truly huge news -- if you wanted to use the iPhone on another GSM carrier (meaning T-Mobile, in the States), you could have done it without jumping through any extra hoops. According to both 9to5Mac and Engadget, however, it appears those initial reports were incorrect: the iPhone is still locked to AT&T, though according to one source (supposedly an Apple retail employee), "it takes like 2 minutes to unlock them."
iPhones have been available unlocked in other countries for some time now, but the US is definitely the iPhone's biggest market. Having the iPhone available for sale unlocked, officially, via Apple, would have been a
huge deal. But that day, unfortunately, doesn't seem to have arrived quite yet.

Uh oh,
Nexus One. We heard from
9 to 5 Mac that Apple was due to begin selling a contract-free variant of the iPhone in the near future "at list price." And guess what happened when we inquired to an Apple store? That's right folks -- you can now pick one up for $499 (3G), $599, or $699 (3GS). We've confirmed this info at no less than five stores, so you should be hearing the same message at your local Appletorium. Given the current
unfriendly climate between Apple and Google, this could be seen as nasty jab, though if the devices are still carrier-locked to AT&T, you're not being given much freedom. In many parts of Europe (France, Spain, and Poland, for example) you can pick up the carrier-unattached device (and we mean totally unlocked), but that doesn't appear to be the case here.
Update: We're getting mixed reports on the unlock status of these phones. One store says yes to the unlock, while others are saying they're still AT&T-locked devices being sold off contract. We're digging for more info on this now, so stay tuned.
Update 2: It's looking like those initial reports of unlocked devices are inaccurate. It sounds like these devices are still locked to AT&T -- so you're just looking at an off contract pricing scheme. What a huge letdown.

9to5Mac is reporting, based on multiple sources, that Apple is now selling unlocked off-contract but still locked to AT&T iPhones at US Apple Retail Stores, at list price.
List price means $499 for 8GB [for iPhone 3G], $599 for 16GB and 32GB is $699 [for iPhone 3GS].
Gizmodo scored the pic above. It’s unknown whether or not this is in response to the unlocked AT&T-friendly Google Nexus One being released (or the Palm Pre on AT&T… we guess), or just part of an ongoing, unrelated sales strategy.
It’s limited right now to one iPhone per person, per day, and who knows how long it will last so if you want your officially unlocked device — go get it! And tell us what your local Apple Retail Store says when you ask for it.

Editor-in-chief Dieter Bohn is once again still braving the Las Vegas strip for the good of the Smartphone Experts network, this week at CTIA 2010.
He’ll be keeping an eye on things for TiPb while he’s there so if you’re at CTIA and have anything iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad related you really want to show off, hit us up at via news(at)tipb(dot)com (or @TiPb).
Dieter (@backlon) will also be covering all the new for PreCentral.net, and he’s brought Phil Nickinson (@philnickinson) from Android Central and WMExperts and the inimitable CrackBerry Kevin (@crackberrykevin) along with him to round out our presence. Keep an eye on their respective sites for all the news, and follow them on Twitter for the inevitable behind-the-scenes shenanigans that follow. (Which I’ll no doubt be poking jealous fun at via @reneritchie — just sayin’!)

Apple has just updated iTunes to allow users to gift paid apps to other users in the same country (i.e. US App Store to US App Store — no cross-border gifting!). The feature appears as part of the drop down widget in iTunes on the desktop.
Similar to the previous music gifting feature, once you’ve opted to gift a paid app you’re taken through several screens where you’re asked to enter your name, the email address for the person you’re gifting too (for smooth gifting, make sure you use the email associated with their iTunes account), a personal message, and confirmation.
We’ve tested it out and it seems to work well. Let us know if you get in the giving spirit (or if you receive any gifted apps).
More screenshots after the break!

The New York Times reports that Apple has struck a deal with Perseus Books Group, an independent publisher and the largest distributor of works from other independent publishers, to bring its content to the iBookstore.
Perseus...

The folks at MindTapp dropped us a note to tell us about their new iPhone app, PhotoNest [$1.99 - iTunes link], that allows you to easily — and visually — post pictures to Twitter:
Twitter is an amazing real time communication tool, but it only sends links to photos and not photos themselves, which isn’t very pretty.
We are dedicated to fixing this! PhotoNest is an application that goes through your Twitter feed and looks for photos that your friends have posted. It then pulls that photo out and puts into a nice visual stream of photos from your Twitter friends.
The photos show up in a vertical stack. Tapping on one takes you to a full-screen view. Tapping on the action button sends you to the web page where the photo is stored (no “reply”, “retweet”, or “email link” options there that I could find — which is a real shame). You can post pictures of your own either by taking one via the embedded Camera or by picking one from your Photo galleries. It works well for what it is, and I like focused Twitter apps, but hopefully it will get rounded out over time. A grid-view option, for example, to rapidly parse and select photos would be great.
I’m a well known sucker for Twitter apps but I’m not a huge photo poster (outside of trade shows) or follower of high-volume photo posters, so I’ll have to wait and see what Leanna and the other far-cooler-than-me writers think before rendering final judgement. In the meantime, ask if you have any questions and if you’ve tried PhotoNest, let us know what you think!

Here's an exclusive TUAW video preview of
Urban Airship's latest product, AirMail. Like their other products, AirMail is powered by a precompiled drop-in library that developers add to their iPhone applications. AirMail adds a whole new spin on push notifications by transforming them from lightweight messaging into a more durable and interactive product.
Normally push notifications give a simple heads-up to users along the lines of "You have mail" or "Someone tweeted your name." AirMail goes further. It uses the iPhone's push notification infrastructure to enhance two-way communications between service providers and their customers.
As this video shows, push notifications are no longer throwaway products. Using AirMail, they can be stored and referenced through an in-app library. Applications can create message histories that persist well beyond the life of a normal push message. What's more, those notifications can involve the user in a multi-directional process, whether confirming that they have taken their pills (as shown here), are ready to take a meeting, or that they acknowledge that a security alarm was triggered in error, among other uses.
