Geohot teases untethered jailbreak that ‘will probably work on iPad’ (video)

Is it April 1st already or does Geohot actually have something real to show? There's no way to be certain that what the self-promoting master of iPhone (and PS3) hacking is demoing is what he says:
"The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too."
Given his track record, we'll play along for now. The only thing we can say for certain is that the chosen music accompanying his iPod touch theatrics makes us want to break something, jailtime or not. See it go down after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Apple job posting hints at LTE for a future iPhone?

Posted on by Richard Lai.

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Apple_listing_suggests_a_LTE_future_for_iPhones'; What could possibly come after the iPhone 3GS? The iPhone 3GSS, of course! Joking aside, Apple's dropped the 4G bomb on one of its latest job postings while seeking for a "Cellular Technology Software Manager" with "expert knowledge of... WCDMA/UMTS, HSPA, HSPA+, LTE etc." That's right, LTE. Now, we're not saying this means a 4G-powered iPhone is next in line in the annual product cycle, nor does this listing confirm Apple's favored 4G radio, but given AT&T's interest in LTE plus its prolonged love affair with Cupertino, it's pretty hard not to consider LTE as a realistic option on future portables, be it iPhone or even iPad. Frankly, it won't be the end of the world if a 4G iPhone fails to turn up this summer -- most of us here would rather have something with improved battery life, real multitasking, and 720p camera over those insane data speeds. No, really.

[Thanks, Bryan]

Geohot untethered iPhone jailbreak

Geohot, the original iPhone hacker, has just posted a huge tease for the must-sought-after iPhone 3.0.x untethered Jailbreak:

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models [iPod touch G2, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch G3], and will probably work on iPad too.

Don’t ask when it will be available, however. Just expect it when you see it.

Apple Begins Shipping iPad Orders for April 3?

iPad pre-orders

Reader Paul tells Apple charged his credit card today for his iPad order, placed on the very first day of availability. We asked on Twitter and it looks like he wasn’t alone.

Typically companies only begin processing order charges when they start shipping products. Does this mean the first set of iPad have commenced their journey from manufacturing for an April 3 delivery?

Did your card get processed? Wi-fi only or 3G as well?

iTunes Preview Accidentally Leaks iPad Apps?

iPad apps landscape

PadGadget did some digging around Apple’s web-based iTunes Preview and came across what look to be some already-approved iPad apps. The give away? The use of HD (High Definition) or XL (eXtra-Large) in the title to signify the bigger 9.7 inch, 1024×768 pixel iPad display. Some of the titles discovered include:

  • Ammoin HD
  • Azkend HD
  • Flight Control HD
  • Grind HD
  • HD Recovery
  • Labyrinth 2 HD
  • NBA Hotshot HD
  • Numba HD
  • Plants vs. Zombie HD
  • Sparkle HD
  • Worms HD

You can’t download them yet, of course, but unless you’re one of the biggest reviewers on the planet you probably don’t have an iPad to play them on anyway…

Anything in there you’re dying to play? I suspect Plants vs. Zombie HD is getting Jeremy’s hard earned cash day one…

A unified mailbox coming to the iPhone — what a concept!

Posted on by Mel Martin.

If the supposed note from El Steve-o is to be believed, the iPhone is getting a unified mailbox at some future date. Don't you wonder what Apple was thinking when it wasn't in the original iPhone plan?

In Mac OS X, I like seeing all of my email on one page, and with a quick click I can look at any email account segregated from the others -- easy peezy.

You would have thought that the famous Apple GUI designers would apply the same logic to the iPhone, but for more than two years I've had to really struggle to see what is coming in on 3 different accounts. I'm tapping more than the Titanic's radio operator just to see what email I have.

I hope the fix comes soon, and that it winds up on the iPad as well. The lack of a unified or universal mailbox is one of those strange Apple decisions that is hard to understand. The lack of cut, copy, and paste was another seemingly bone-headed choice that Apple finally got right. Now Microsoft seems to be drinking the same kool-aid with its upcoming Windows Phone 7 OS. The company says no copy/paste will be in the phone OS, and they're telling users they don't really need it anyway. Sure.

Apple makes a lot of great choices and we love Apple products, but every so often they seem to miss a big feature. After a lot of bad feelings from customers, they finally make it right. Usually. Sometimes. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for that unified inbox, and switching frantically between mail accounts. Grrrrr.

Can you think of some other big missing items? A camera in the iPad comes to mind...

iPad iBookstore to Include FREE Project Gutenberg Catalog?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

iBooks iBookstore and Project Gutenberg

AppAdvice has followed up their $9.99 bestseller sneak-peak with more screenshots they claim come from the pre-release iPad iBooks and iBookstore, this time indicating Apple is including that massive Project Gutenberg library of free eBook content right in the app.

We mentioned Project Gutenberg last week and it’s 30,000 ePub-format, iBooks friendly public domain titles and figured Apple would just let you drag them into iTunes and move them on over to iBooks. This, however, would mean they’re already linked and ready to download.

Whether or not the full catalog is there, or just some subset of popular or editorial choices is unknown, and indeed everything is subject to change before the iPad ships on April 3, but we’re hoping this is true and stays put.

It would be the iBooks answer to iTunes’ free podcast and iTunes U, and the App Store’s free apps section. And t’would be glorious.
