iPhone OS 4 unlocks 720p video capture, further solidifying iPhone HD?

Last time on let's-speculate-about-Apple-products, the New iPhone rumor mill dug up dirt on video chat and a 5 megapixel camera. Now, it appears there might be one more reason to call it the iPhone HD. MacRumors reports that the iPhone SDK 4 beta includes the value "AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720," leading some to believe Cupertino's next phone will record video in 720p. Mind you, the iPhone 3GS was technically already capable of that feat, so this might not have anything to do with a new handset, but honestly, at this point the iPhone's camera wouldn't be competitive recording in a smaller format anyhow.

Android tablet shown off running (and crashing) Flash

Android_tablet

An Android-based tablet was captured on video running Flash — or should we say trying to run Flash — before it crashes:

“Here’s a quick and dirty hands-on video review of the Android multi-touch tablet prototype (Android ipad). Yes, it does Adobe flash and air well.”

Ironically, you can hear the cameraman boast how he’s happy he did not purchase an iPad just as he goes to YouTube and the tablet crashes.

(For the record, after watching this video I am perfectly content with my iPad purchase.)

In fairness, this is beta software on a beta device, and it will no doubt improve as they throw time, money, and hardware at it. Then again, it’s 2010 and Apple’s had YouTube on the iPhone since 2007, and now have it on the iPad (running cool to the touch with 10 hours of battery life).

Is Adobe proving Steve Jobs right?

Former US Labor Secretary on antitrust investigation: “Hands off Apple”

Posted on by Chris Rawson.

If you want a preview of how this nonsensical antitrust investigation against Apple is going to play out, look no farther than Robert Reich, US Secretary of Labor during the Clinton administration. Reich has written in defense of Apple regarding the possibly forthcoming antitrust investigations. He notes that the investigations are taking place because of Apple's disallowing of third-party programming tools like Flash CS5 when writing apps for the iPhone. "What's wrong with that?" Reich asks. "Apple says it's necessary to maintain quality. If consumers disagree they can buy platforms elsewhere."

An expert in US labor law, who was once the secretary in charge of labor policy in the US, sees no problem with Apple's practices regarding development for its platform. Case closed, Adobe. Thanks for playing.

Read on to find out why this investigation started in the first place.

Freeverse has released the latest title in their Flick Sports series, and Flick Baseball Pro is now out on the App Store for $2.99. We got a quick hands-on with the game right after release, and while it's a pretty good arcade-style baseball simulation, there are a few quirks and missing features that might make you want to go for a more official baseball app.

Still, just like the other titles in the Flick Sports series, Flick Baseball Pro exudes polish and really takes advantage of Freeverse's growing familiarity with the iPhone and iPod touch hardware. Read on for an in-depth first look at the game.

Adobe decries Apple’s ‘walled garden,’ yet pledges ‘best tools’ for HTML5

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch says Flash works just fine on the Apple iPhone, thank you very much -- and he thinks that's exactly why Apple keeps on denying it access. Speaking at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, he explained his belief that by eliminating Flash, Cupertino is forcing developers to build apps natively for iPhone OS rather than one of Adobe's cross-platform solutions, and thus creating a "walled garden" of applications that users must flock to an iDevice to be able to use. Lynch compared Apple's control over development formats to 19th century railroad lines that competed for customers by using differently sized rails, and pledged that Adobe would not be part of such a competition. "It's not HTML vs. Flash -- they've been co-existing for over a decade," he said, adding, "We're going to try and make the best tools in the world for HTML5." So, what do you think about that, Steve?

Next generation iPhone to support 720p HD video recording?

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.

500x_iphone3

The 4th generation iPhone looks like it will be able to do some high definition (HD) video recording according to the iPhone 4 Beta SDK. A little digging into the code reveals that there are two presets for recording resolution, the current 640×480 (VGA) and a 1280×720 (720p).

  • AVCaptureSessionPreset640×480
  • AVCaptureSessionPreset1280×720

It is looking more and more like Rene will finally get that iPhone HD he has been craving for the past two years. If you were on the fence about upgrading your iPhone does HD video recording sway you to make the purchase?

Crush the Castle for iPhone free today only

Posted on by Mel Martin.

I'm not much of a gamer but I adore Crush the Castle. It's a medieval themed game where you use a trebuchet to knock down your enemies who inhabit an increasingly difficult arrangement of fortifications. It's a good test of skill and your knowledge of the physics of heavy airborne objects.

Today only, the full featured game is free, and in Uncle Mel's view it is definitely worth grabbing. It's great for passing the time in an airport, and can help you conquer your daily build-up of frustrations. The sound effects are super, from the screams of your victims to the subtle environmental sounds that match the locale in which a particular round takes place.

My only regret is that there is not yet an iPad version, but it doesn't scale up too badly and is still fun to play. If you haven't played this game, I recommend trying it. If you have only been using the 'lite' version, here's a chance to upgrade at no cost.

Thanks to Bill for the tip!

Keepin’ it real fake: GiPhone F98 is the KIRFiest next gen iPhone KIRF to ever KIRF

It's been nearly a month since a China Grabber employee drunkenly left his experimental prototype next gen GiPhone at a Sushi Bar in Shenzhen, where it was found and sold to Shanzai.com for several thousand Yuan -- and the gadget world hasn't been the same since. The GiPhone F98 features, as all of these KIRFs do, dual SIM cards, an FM Radio, an "iPhone style" UI, WiFi, Bluetooth, and compatibility with 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz GSM. And it's one of the thickest phones we've seen in a long time! (See for yourself after the break.) Available now for $150, if you dare.

Walkthrough: How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 with Spirit

Posted on by Allyson Kazmucha.
Categories: Uncategorized.

iphone_pirate_2

So with the release of the Spirit jailbreak for iPhone, 3.1.3, it’s only appropriate to post a quick how-to, so here it is.  And of course, with a jailbreaking tutorial, here comes the disclaimer:

If you’re not sure what you’re doing and have misgivings about jailbreaking, you probably should stray away.  I will say, out of all the jailbreaks that have been released, this one is one of the simplest, and I’m talking blackra1n easy.  Walkthrough and video after the break!

First, jump on over to download the Spirit jailbreak software onto your computer.  The download can be found here.  Download whichever version corresponds to your OS.  For those wondering, this WILL work with any version of iTunes, up to the current 9.1.1 version (that’s what I have on both my Macs and it works just fine).

Before doing anything else, back up ALL your data via iTunes.  I have had a few jailbreaks go downhill and it’s always good to have everything backed up just in case you have to restore or your phone gets stuck in DFU mode and you’re forced with no other option but a restore (and yes, it happens).  Spirit has an issue early on that apparently deleted people’s photos.  That’s supposed to be fixed by now, but I’d back up pictures just to be on the safe side.

Next, quit iTunes and launch Spirit.  Just click the button and wait!  After a minute you’ll see a status bar complete and you should be fully jailbroken!  You’ll be able to tell when you see the Cydia app on one of your homepages.  This is the icon you’ll want to look for:

Cydia Installed

For anyone who is new to the jailbreak scene, you’ll want to open Cydia and download a few key things to enhance your experience:

  • Winterboard (an essential for theming out your phone)
  • Themes! (check out our jailbreak forums for some suggestions)
  • Rock App (if you’d prefer it over Cydia, search “RockApp”)
  • SBSettings (allows a quick swipe to access all your main toggles)
There are a lot of neat apps and tweaks to download (including several plug-ins for SBSettings). Look for coming reviews as well as past ones for jailbroken app reviews. All the ones listed above are free to download.  I personally prefer Rock over Cydia as Rock has a very convenient backup system within it to keep track of all your licenses and downloads.  It was nice to not have to restore everything I had jailbroken and just click restore from backup.  Cydia has ways to backup as well, I just find Rock’s interface much nicer.  But again, it’s a matter of opinion.

If you’d like the ability to SSH into your phone and edit themes, as well as other files, you’ll also need to download Terminal and OpenSSH.  I only recommend SSH’ing for those who have a pretty decent knowledge of the iPhone OS and how to SSH.  Deleting certain files or altering them can be disastrous if you aren’t sure what you’re doing. So again, approach with caution.  And as always, anytime you ever have software installed on your phone that allows remote access, change your root password!  If you need help doing that, jump over to the TiPb jailbreak and unlock forums .
