Would the iPhone on Verizon rumors kindly make up their modem-flipping minds?

Rumors are saying the iPhone is coming to Verizon as soon as this summer. On LTE. Which follow rumors saying, due to AT&T’s iPad deal, iPhone on Verizon was pushed back to 2011. Which followed rumors iPhone on Verizon would be the “one more thing” at the iPhone OS 4 event. Which followed–

Enough. Since 2007 all we’ve gotten is rumor after conflicted rumor that the iPhone is coming out on Verizon later in the year, no in 2012, no yesterday, no….

Forget it. There’re almost certainly CDMA and LTE iPhones deep beneath Cupertino in the Apple labs, just as there were Intel Macs for years before they were released. Apple can release a CDMA or LTE iPhone whenever they feel like it. Verizon can put a CDMA or LTE iPhone on their network whenever they feel like. That is, whenever they’re contractually allowed to and come to a financial arrangement (which could be tomorrow, or never, getting the idea yet?)

In other words, we’ll believe it when Steve holds it up on stage.

iPad 3G deal may delay Verizon iPhone

Verizon iPhone 2011

When it comes to the Verizon iPhone, there is no shortage of rumors. The latest rumor suggests that Apple and AT&T had a deal with the iPad 3G. AT&T offered cheap data plans for iPad 3G customers, in exchange for Apple renewing their contract for at least another year. This is just pure speculation from a Wall Street Analyst, Brian Marshall (source: Computer World) so for all we know he could be making things up. There is still a possibility of the iPhone launching on the Verizon Wireless network, we’ll just need to play the waiting game and see.

In other news, the new iPhone 4G or iPhone HD is launching this summer with the iPhone 4.0 software.  The iPhone 4G hardware prototype was leaked, and a photo gallery of it was posted online late last month. Apple will most likely announce the iPhone 4G during the WWDC event that takes place during June 7-11.

Found Footage: Playing virtual golf in Manhattan with Gigaputt for iPhone

Considering the number of iPhones around the world, I have this sinking feeling that we're going to start seeing a lot of people wandering looking like fools. Well, they already look like fools, but when people start swinging imaginary golf clubs in public they're going to look even more foolish.

Gigaputt for iPhone (US$1.99), from Gigantic Mechanic, is an augmented reality app that lets you play golf anywhere. You grab your iPhone, fire up Gigaputt, and it lays down a virtual 3-hole golf course wherever you may be. That could be in the middle of Manhattan, in a suburban shopping mall, in the swamps of Louisiana, or on a mountainside in Colorado.

Gigaputt includes support for OpenFeint as well as Twitter and Facebook integration. For two bucks, it looks like a great way to get some exercise and lose all your dignity. Now, where did I put my plaid golf pants?

Some of the 24 image-editing effects in this app are decent, but others are just not very good. As a result, A Camera Queen fails to distinguish itself from other mobile image editors in the App Store.

Verizon iPhone chatter is getting harder (than usual) to ignore

Posted on by Chris Ziegler.

Alright, stop us if you've heard this one before -- but seriously, we've noticed an uptick on the tip lines here at Engadget in the last couple weeks that's becoming difficult to ignore. It's one thing to say "hey, the iPhone is launching on Verizon," but we're noticing a particular confluence of facts that has us intrigued: it'll drop sometime in Summer, possibly in concert with the announcement that Verizon's first commercial LTE networks have gone live, and -- tread carefully here, because this is pretty difficult to believe and we don't want to get your hopes up only to have them smashed into a million pieces -- it'll supposedly even be a 4G launch device. We've gotten surprisingly specific details both from Verizon employees and tipsters whose companies are supposedly under NDA with Verizon to test enterprise deployments of the handset later this year, and they're all sending basically this same message. Read on!

Nintendo calls Apple “Enemy of the Future”

Posted on by Allyson Kazmucha.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is speaking up about his thoughts on Apple and their potential impact on Nintendo, calling Apple their “enemy of the future”.

Anyone who’s ever visited the App Store is already aware of the plethora of games available for iPhone/iPod touch and now, iPad.  Up until now, the big guys in the physical console business had stayed pretty quiet.  But it appears Nintendo is changing their tune.  Iwata is believed to have told his senior executives to consider the battle with Sony a victory already won and to switch their focus to something different.  That something different would be Apple.

No one can deny Apple’s impact on the gaming industry.  As of right now, there are over 180,000 apps in the iTunes app store.  Around 30,000 of those apps are games.  With the addition of the iPad, we can only assume that number will continue to climb upward.  As consumers decide on handheld gaming devices, an iPhone/iPod Touch or iPad is just as worthy of a contender as a DS or PSP these days.  Nintendo had intended for the DS to capture audiences other than the typical male gamer stereotype, but as Times Online states,

The company’s recent strategy has centred on creating devices aimed not just at children and dedicated — generally male — gamers, but at the whole family. Two years ago, the company claimed to have permanently altered the demographics of video games by raising the average age and the gender mix of gamers. Unfortunately, the very people it claimed to have converted — high-school girls and men aged between 30 and 40 — reported that they would rather have an iPhone than a DS in their pockets or handbags.

Developers are really what make the app store so successful at the end of the day.  From a development standpoint, the startup costs aren’t insane and most development companies are seeing a large return on those investments.  Many larger gaming companies have also developed iPhone OS versions of their games that have done extremely well, such as Gameloft.  And for the end consumer, when the average price of an iPhone app is $3 while a console game costs above $20, most people may opt for having more games at a cheaper price.

At this point, it’s only wise for Nintendo to consider Apple a valid competitor.

Nintendo CEO: battle with Sony is over, Apple is the ‘enemy of the future’

Posted on by Darren Murph.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Backing away from a previous position, are we Nintendo? Just a month after Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claimed that the iPhone OS (you know, that operating system used on the iPod touch, iPhone family and the iPad) wasn't a "viable profit platform for game development," along comes the company's president to say that, in fact, Apple is the primary "enemy of the future." That's according to Times Online, who says that the Big N's CEO (Satoru Iwata) feels that the battle with Sony is a "victory already won," and who clearly believes that the next wave of gaming won't be of the traditional sit-on-your-coach-and-slam-buttons variety. 'Course, the PSP never has been able to hang with the DS family, but even the Wii has a ways to go before it catches the mighty PlayStation 2 in terms of global sales. Going forward, the company is purportedly looking to revive the element of "surprise" in Nintendo products, but it might be best served by simply catching up to the competition and supporting this wild concept known as "HD gaming" over "HDMI."

Nokia adds iPad, more iPhone to lawsuit again Apple

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Nokia has just filed a second patent infringement suit against Apple, adding the iPad into the mix. The new suit covers:

five patents related to “enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices.” [...] by our count, Apple and Nokia now have some five pending legal actions between them, including one that’s been placed on hold pending an ITC decision.

This one has been filed in a so-called “rocket-docket” which means, unlike previous suits, it could go to trial in less than a year.

Now we’ll just sit back, grab some popcorn with our good friends over at NokiaExperts.com, and wait for Apple to counter-sue. Again.
