AT&T internet tethering finally arriving along with iPhone OS 4?

Posted on by Jeremy Sikora.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Judging from the latest iPhone OS 4 beta that was released earlier today, it would appear AT&T may finally be gearing up to actually release internet tethering for all of their iPhone customers.

Under network settings in the latest beta you have a option that allows you to set up internet tethering. When pressed you are greeted with a popup that gives the options to call AT&T or send you to your online account to activate the tethering feature. There is still no official word from AT&T but if all goes well those of you who been patiently waiting for tethering may finally get your wish.

What do you think? Is tethering with iPhone OS 4 a reality or simply wishful thinking? Sound off in the comments below!

Twitter for iPhone (Tweetie 3.0) slowly going live around the world

Posted on by Darren Murph.
Categories: Uncategorized.
So look -- you've got a plethora of options on the iPhone to keep you connected to the Twitterverse, but if you're looking for something a touch more official, the wait is nearly over. A few short weeks after Twitter acquired Atebits, the creators of the Tweetie app, the company issued the first official Twitter app for Android; tonight, it looks as if a revamped version of Tweetie (3.0, obviously) will claim that same crown over on iPhone OS. It's tough to say exactly what changes are coming, but a few sporadic tips are coming in from far-flung corners of the globe saying that it's already available. If we were the betting type, we'd say it'll finally pop up in the US app store right around midnight. Pins and needles, we know.

Update: It's live in New Zealand, and the full changelog is after the break. Hang tight, everyone else!

[Thanks, Mike]

If you like living on the brutal, life-altering bleeding edge the same way we do, odds are you've got iPhone OS 4 beta 3 installed on that 3GS of yours -- assuming you have an iPhone 3GS, naturally. That also means that you'll likely be interested to hear that beta 4 is now out and ready for you to download, install, and not brick your phone if everything goes according to plan, just as long as you've got access to an Apple iPhone Developer Program account. Go forth, intrepid readers -- and do report back on your exploits, won't you?

Switched On: Stowaway from the PDA era

Posted on by Ross Rubin.

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Their screens lacked color and their apps lacked Internet access, but one thing the PDAs of yore had in common with the smartphones of today was text input that couldn't compare to a full-sized keyboard. The challenge, of course, is that full-sized keyboards generally aren't very good traveling companions for pocket-sized devices. In 2000, a startup called ThinkOutside addressed the issue with the first Stowaway keyboard, an ingeniously designed folding keyboard that used the dock connector of Palm PDAs to create a touch-typing experience that fit in your pocket. (Stowaway designer Phil Baker is the author of the book From Concept to Consumer, which explains how ideas become products that get built overseas and ultimately sold back here).

ThinkOutside went on to create versions for PocketPCs, infrared (to accommodate incompatible dock connector standards) connections, and then finally Bluetooth. The company was eventually purchased by accessory maker Mobility Electronics, which renamed itself iGo after its flagship power adapter product, and eventually cancelled the Stowaway. At the time, PDA sales were sinking and relatively few handsets supported Bluetooth; most of those that did supported only the profiles needed for headsets and speakerphones, not keyboard input.

Apple patent details workflows, social networking links for iPhone

Posted on by Steven Sande.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Filed under:

When we're working with our iPhones and sharing information with other people, it sometimes takes more steps than it should to perform a task. Patently Apple recently published information about an Apple patent application describing a new icon and process to make multi-step workflows easier to accomplish.

In the patent description, each transaction takes place between an initiator and a target. While several examples are shown, the most interesting one deals with Facebook integration. As seen in the above diagram from Patently Apple, this workflow creates what appears to be a Wi-Fi Direct or Bluetooth connection to another iPhone, requests a vCard from the target, receives the information and allows you to either edit or accept it, adds a picture of the target person, and then sends a friend request to Facebook.

Today's process requires several apps (Contacts and Facebook) and the target would have to send contact information via email or MMS, adding another app and more complexity. The ability to add workflows to the iPhone automates the process of adding information to Contacts and Facebook much in the manner that Automator on the Mac can be set up to integrate applications.

There were rumors circulating last week about Apple integrating Facebook into iPhone OS 4; perhaps the workflow concept is a way of doing that and building an Automator-type functionality into iPhone OS. As always, applying for the patent doesn't necessarily mean that Apple will use this technology in a future product.

Twitter for iPhone (Tweetie 3.0) is coming… now-ish

Twitter for iPhone update available

Twitter for iPhone, aka Tweetie 3.0, is showing as an available update now in iTunes, though the link currently leads to an “application unavailable” popup. We take this to mean that, yes, Tweetie 2.0 was pulled from the iTunes App Store last night because the newly rebranded version is on its way… now-ish.

How long it takes for now-ish to become now depends on entirely on the wanton tease that is iTunes’ international propagation system. If/when you manage to grab it, let us know in comments and tell us what you think. (Especially if you spot any nifty new features!)

As the XL label suggests, this app is a super-sized version of ScoreCenter optimized to take advantage of the iPad's larger screen. While it's a solid app in many respects, there are a few wobbly or missing features that mar the overall experience.
