Consumer survey says iPhone owners more likely to shop online, go snowboarding

This little list of factoids from last fall's Survey of the American Consumer is pretty interesting. It runs down a few of the things that iPhone owners are more likely to do than the average American. Some of them are obvious (iPhone owners are more likely to make calls over the Internet, see their phone as entertainment, or even pay a subscription to watch live TV on the device), but did you know that iPhone owners are even more likely to own an elliptical trainer or be snowboarders? In fact, they're 282% more likely than the average American to order a product from Zappos.

Maybe they just wanted to save money. At any rate, these stats are really more of a novelty. We already know that most iPhone and Apple product users tend to be male, older, and affluent; it's not surprising that pastimes and activities that also appeal to that segment are popular among iPhone owners.

In the end, the most interesting stat may be the last one: iPhone owners are 52% more likely than other people to want to "wow" others with their devices. We know that iPhone owners have more money and more resources than others, but I'm interested to know more about just how vain we are and how Apple cultivates its own image to target that audience.

If Google TV runs off iPad-like chipset, could Apple TV?

Apple TV should run iPhone OS concept

TiPb’s wondered out loud before about the prospect of the Apple TV joining the iPhone OS family and providing a better overall package than the current no browser, no apps, no pretty much anything exciting product that hasn’t seen a hardware update since… almost ever.

Now with Google TV on the horizon, Fortune brings word that while the Android box will be running an Intel CPU it will be using the same GPU as the iPad (and iPhone 3GS) — the PowerVR SGX.

PowerVR is owned by Imagination and both Apple and Intel have stakes in the company. With Google pushing into every one of Apple’s businesses, is the living room something Apple’s going to be willing to surrender, and if not, how will they push back?

Current Apple TV hardware runs a custom Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 OS on top of an Intel Pentium M 1GHz “Crofton” CPU and NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 GPU which was low-end desktop kit a few years ago.

We’re still loving the idea of a 1GHz Apple A4-family powered, next generation Apple TV with iPhone OS. That’ll leave Google and Apple to compete as they usually do — with Google giving away everything that doesn’t make them money and offering diversity, and Apple focusing on a few core things and making the experience as user-friendly as possible.

Google TV could get built into every display and set-top box (though big media will freeze it out of interacting with any cable or satellite content stream, sorry VoD fans) and kinda sorta work for nerds willing to IR blast or harmonize their remotes. Apple TV could only work with iPods, iPhones, iPads, Macs and PCs but what content you have or Apple provides would be easy and seamless.

Which means both solutions would still be incredibly lacking, but given the restrictions Apple TV with iPhone OS would still be a lot more compelling — and competitive — than it is today.

App Store reject Wi-Fi Sync gets Cydia release

Of course, you can only access Cydia if you have a jailbroken iPhone, but once you’ve done that Wi-Fi Sync itself is a $9.99 download. So far there’s only a computer-side client version for Mac OS X, but Hughes promises a Windows version shortly. Also in the works is a version of Wi-Fi [...]

iPhone 3G missing a ’select’ button on Apple Store, might not be long for this earth

Yes, the "iPhone 3G is dead" rumors are flying fast, and our latest entry is hardly a rumor: Apple's online store currently lists the solitary 8GB iPhone 3G next to the full iPhone 3GS crop, but there's no longer a tasty "select" button below it. Usually if something's out of stock on the Apple store it will just say so, along with a projected time of delay, but with the 4G presumably around the corner this could indeed be marking the end of the 3G's last stand.

[Thanks, J]

International iPads begin shipping!

international iPads begin shipping

International iPads have begun shipping in order to meet Apple’s delivery and release deadline of May 28, 2010. So fire up those planes from Shenzhen, China, get those trucks in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and UK gassed and ready, because Apple is once again about to unleash iPad fury. (And likely rack up more millions of sales in what was, up until April 3, an obscure and unrealized product category).

And don’t worry Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore, yours will be coming in July.

That’s my iPad up in the picture, as nicely presented by Deliveries for iPad and while I know no amount of wishing or imaginary telekinetic reality distortion will get it here any faster, I’m going to keep staring until it gets here.

Note: yes, they shipped my $0.20 Rogers MicroSIM separately, and the Camera Kit is slated only to follow in June.

If you got your shipment notification, let us know for which device and what country you’re in.

TUAW’s Daily App: Theseus

Theseus isn't for everyone -- it's a little slower-paced and more thoughtful than a lot of apps in the store, and the puzzles included get hard fast. But if you're looking for a challenge and a little bit of brain-teasing on your iPhone, Theseus will provide just that. It's a puzzle game based on the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. You control Theseus, represented by blue dot on a series of mazes. Your job is to try and get away from the Minotaur, the red dot, and make it to the exit on each screen.

The catch? You only get to move one square each turn, while the Minotaur gets to move two. But he will always try to move toward you, so with a little clever planning, there's always a way to evade him and escape the Labyrinth. That can be fiendishly tough, but the game is solidly built, with a whole slew of ways to undo and reset the game if you run into problems. Trial and error can get you far, and if you get too frustrated, there's a hint button that will help you get through the game's over 80 levels. There's a free version to try out, and if you enjoy figuring out ways to get around the Minotaur, Theseus is on the App Store for US$1.99.

Engadget: Sam Mendes shooting Apple ads, video chat to be featured

Here's another juicy iPhone rumor. Engadget reports that American Beauty director Sam Mendes will be shooting the next batch of Apple ads, and at least one will feature video chat.

Quoting some rather telling tweets, Engadget has put together that auditions are underway. An actress posted the message you see above, in which she's praying for a role in "a F***ing Apple commercial," while another tweet from a different actor reads, "off to a commercial audition for Apple."

In addition, Engadget paraphrases "a trusted source" by saying that at least one ad will feature a mother and daughter talking via video chat with their iPhones, giving further credence to the front-facing camera that appeared in the prototypes that Gizmodo and Tinhte recently showed off.

Are you excited? We are. See you on the 7th!

iPhone HD/iPhone 4G video iChat to be featured in commercial directed by Sam Mendes

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Looks like Sam Mendes, director of American Beauty has been tapped to create some new iPhone HD/iPhone 4G commercials for Apple. Further, Engadget tipsters brings word that the device, known internally as the Mammoth N90, will have a mother and daughter highlighting its iChat video feature in at least one of the commercials.

While it’s not unprecedented for cameras to disappear from final Apple release products (see iPod touch G3 and possibly iPad), the front-facing iChat video camera is looking like a surer bet every day.

Now will AT&T charge extra for it, and would you use it?

As you might expect from its counterparts on the Mac and iPhone, the Iconfactory's Twitterrific for iPad is a well-designed, elegant Twitter client, though it may lack some bells and whistles.
