PosiMotion certainly announced this one well enough in advance (all the way back in December), but it looks like its Helix gaming grip for the iPhone and iPod touch is now finally available, and at Best Buy no less. In case your memory needs to be jogged a bit, this $20 contraption promises to be ideal for "virtually any game," and let you use your iPhone or iPod touch in either portrait or landscape mode -- it'll also keep your headphones from getting tangled up for good measure. Still not convinced? Then perhaps the video after the break will change your mind -- chains not included.

Marware Eco-Vue case for iPad – accessory review

Marware Eco-Vue case brings executive leather folio look-and-feel to iPad

Make no mistake, the Marware Eco-Vue case for the iPad [$42.95 - TiPb store link] is the executive option for iPad cases. It’s the leather bound Cadillac. It’s the finely appointed Benz. No, I’m not writing a luxury car review, but that’s kind of how this case feels. The quality is excellent — it smells excellent. Deep black leather with crisp white stitching on the outside sandwiches your iPad providing a think layer of plush protection, softer gray microfiber swaddles it inside while still granting access to hardware buttons and ports. There’s also a clear screen protector included to keep the display safe.

A thin elastic band lets you secure the Marware Eco-Vue closed or flipped back and open. There’s a leather strap that folds over the top and tucks in to keep your iPad from falling out. I’m paranoid so it didn’t de-stress me to the level a snap or velcro or some other form of security would have, but it’s long enough and the friction is high enough that the iPad stays put. It’s leather-glove tight inside either, which will annoy perfectionists but does make getting the iPad in and out far easier. Since I haven’t seen a dock yet that will work with this size case, that could be a plus for those who want to take their iPad out every once and a while.

Inside the Marware Eco-Vue’s front cover are a couple of highly useful extras. An elastic leather strap lets you slip one hand inside so you can carry the iPad around and tap away with the other hand without worrying it will slip and fall. A stand folds out to let you prop it up on a table to create a better typing angle. A magnet keeps it from flopping around when not in use. Smart. So smart I kind of wish a magnet was also used to keep the case closed, though the elastic is certainly more traditional.

And if you’re wondering about the Eco in the name, Marware says it’s made out of substances healthier for the environment and meets RoHS standards.

On the negative side, luxury comes at a price and in this case the price is bulk. The Marware Eco-Vue isn’t a skin, it isn’t a film, it’s a fairly hefty leather bound folio. If 1.5lbs of iPad is already dragging you down, this won’t help (hitting the weights might). I found the protection worth it, and didn’t even use a bad with the Marware. I just closed it, secured the elastic, and carried my iPad around like a book. That way, the net total was a lighter, more portable, if somewhat Yuppy-esque solution.

I’ve heard some complaints that there’s nowhere inside the Marware Eco-Vue to carry a paper notebook and pen. Sure. Okay. That’s valid. I got an iPad so I’d never have to use pen and paper on the go again, but for those of you who want to take the old and the new with you, Marware doesn’t offer that option. Nor is there a place to stick some business cards. It’s also black only at the moment, so if you prefer your leather in Indiana Jones brown, you’re out of luck.

Other than those gripes I’ve been very impressed, and I’m decidedly not the type of person who usually likes the leather fold-over case form factor. (See Sikora, Jeremy). I’ve actually been using it more than what’s required to review it and I have a sneaky suspicion that means it’s won me over.

If you’re looking for a smart, sexy iPad case that offers both protection and panache, look no further — the Marware Eco-Vue has you covered.

Apple sells 2 million iPads in less than 2 months

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Following last Friday’s first international launch, Apple today announced that they’ve sold 2 million iPads in under 2 months.

Apple began shipping iPad in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK this past weekend. iPad will be available in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year.

“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”

Jobs has often quoted the saying, “great artists ship”. One of Apple’s strengths is actually shipping product. The other is selling it.

TUAW’s Daily App: Weber’s On the Grill

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

It's Memorial Day, and hopefully that means you're celebrating the onset of summer by putting some meat on a hot grill until it tastes amazing. If you need a little help, though, Weber's official iPhone app (or the iPad version) can be there -- it's got references, recipes, tips, grilling timers, and even a shopping list feature (although if you're planning to grill today, hopefully you've been marinating since last night!).

The app is excellent, with big, colorful pictures, a host of options for serious grillers, and more recipes than you can cook in one summer. You might think that it's a bit pricey at $4.99, but don't forget that a comparable recipe book (there are over 250 recipes in the app) would be much more expensive. And if you're grilling so much that you need an app to help you cook, why not shell out for the best?

If you're really that cheap, there are a few other griller's helpers apps out there (and Grill-It! isn't bad for just 99 cents), but in this case, the five bucks is worth it. Good luck at the BBQ today!

DoJ’s inquiry at Apple purportedly expanding beyond iTunes practices

Posted on by Darren Murph.

Take this for whatever it's worth (which isn't a whole heck of a lot without any official confirmation from any of the parties involved), but the New York Post has it that the Justice Department's inquiry into Apple's iTunes practices may in fact be growing. 'Course, it's not exactly surprising to hear that authorities are now investigating every nook and cranny of Apple's tactics thanks to Steve Jobs' public thrashing of Flash and his sly insistence that the world shun Adobe while hugging HTML5, but we've still yet to hear from the DoJ and Apple about what exactly is going on within Cupertino. At any rate, the Post notes that a number of "sources" have confirmed that the inquiry is growing, most notably to include "how the iPhone and iPad maker does business with media outfits in areas beyond music." We'd heard whispers that things may be getting just a bit too dictator-ish in the developers Ts and Cs, and now it seems that the DoJ is "asking questions about the terms that Apple lays out for computer programmers who want to develop apps for the iPad." It'll be interesting to see how all of this plays out, but we can bet devs (and end-users, frankly) are hoping and praying for less restrictions in the future.

iPhone HD/iPhone 4G screen under microscope is 960x640

With the flood of iPhone HD/iPhone 4G prototypes and spare parts turning up it was only a matter of time before someone put the screen under a microscope and began counting pixels, and yes — it looks to be the ultra-sharp 960×640 pixel display we’ve been drooling over for a while now.

It also looks to be an IPS panel like the iPad and latest generation iMacs, which means those glorious dots will have an equally glorious field of view.

WWDC 2010 and the presumed official unveiling is just a week away!

Netflix for iPad hacked and running on iPhone

Posted on by Joshua Topolsky.
Categories: Uncategorized.
How desperate are you to get Netflix running on your iPhone? Desperate enough to jailbreak, grab frameworks from your iPad, and do some plist hacking? If the answer to those questions is "yes," then the folks at ModMyi have something they'd like to show you. According to the site, a tipster has been able to get the video streaming service up and playing on an iPhone by making what appears to be fairly simple changes to his device; namely, boosting the iPad's MediaPlayer.framework and altering plist settings once the app was installed on his phone. It's not all wine and roses, as using Netflix where it's not supposed to be used causes a massive battery drain (go figure), and there are issues with crashing and 3G playback (two more unsurprising problems). Still, it can be done, and this is just the start -- so if you want to get in on the party (and maybe even help out a little bit), hit the read link and see what it's all about.

[Thanks, Cody]

DoJ increasing anti-Apple probe from music to all media

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The New York Post is reporting that the Department of Justice is extending its anti-trust probe into Apple beyond music into all forms of media, including movies and TV shows.

“The [Justice Dept.] is doing outreach,” said one Hollywood industry source. “You can’t dictate terms to the industry. The Adobe thing is just inviting the wrath of everybody.”

Interestingly, Hollywood thinks nothing about dictating terms to consumers or treating us like criminals, forcing DRM schemes on Apple and other companies — schemes like HDCP and FairPlay that don’t stop bootleggers but do stop regular consumers from fairly using the content they paid for. They’ve also recently gotten the government to help close the “analog recording loop”, create unfair laws like the DMCA and pursue rediculous international agreements to do likewise and worse.

Apple, like Microsoft and Google should be properly scrutinized for abusive and anti-competitive practices, absolutely. But what about Hollywood, who is scrutinizing them? The government is supposed to protect the interests of the people, not of the studios.

Ironically, Hollywood-mandated DRM is the only hard lock in iTunes.

If the probe into Apple is really about protecting consumers then great, protect us. If it’s about helping friends in Hollywood remove Apple as a barrier towards further harming consumers with more DRM, higher prices, and less choice, then how about turning the DoJ around and pointing them in the right direction?

Smokescreen makes Flash content visible on iPhone and iPad (video)

Posted on by Thomas Ricker.

Mind you, it's just a preview release, but Chris Smoak's Smokescreen does exactly what it promises: enable Flash content to play on Apple's iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. Kind of. Here's how Smokescreen gets around using a Flash plugin as described by Simon Willison:
"It runs entirely in the browser, reads in SWF binaries, unzips them (in native JS), extracts images and embedded audio and turns them in to base64 encoded data:uris, then stitches the vector graphics back together as animated SVG."
While it works fine with simple animated banner ads (uh, huzzah!?), we found that Smokescreened Flash content like video and games was impossibly slow when tested on our iPhone 3G. Still, it's a start for this soon to be open sourced Flash player written in JavaScript. Check the video after the break for a demonstration or give it a go for yourselves by browsing over to the appropriate source link below.
