How to add symbols to your iOS 4 folder names

Posted on by Leanna Lofte.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Just when you thought your folders were organized and cleverly named just right, we’re here to turn the naming game up a notch by adding symbols with Glyphboard. I’m sure many of you have a folder filled with Apple apps named “Apple”. I definitely do. But why be so boring and predictable when you can name it with the Apple logo instead? To learn how, follow us after the break!

First, you must visit http://mrgan.com/gb/ with Safari on your iPhone. Then follow the instructions to add the website as a bookmark to your homepage. Now, exit Safari and tap the bookmark you just created. This opens a web app called Glyphboard.

Glyphboard includes 48 characters that can be copied and pasted anywhere else on your iPhone such, as email, notes, calendar, and of course, folders! Glyphboard also provides a box at the top so you can paste several icons within the web app and copy them all together. This is a time-saver for those of you that may want to use more than one character at once.

Now get to it! Give your folders a unique touch with Glyphboard and share your creativity. Head on over to the TiPb forums and show off your latest folders.

Exchange users on iOS 4 need an updated config profile

Posted on by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The path to ActiveSync nirvana for iPhone 4/iOS 4 users has not run all that smooth over the past couple of weeks. There were dramatic slowdowns for Google Apps and Exchange users who tried to synchronize calendar and mail data, although matters improved after the first day or two. Worse, some Exchange administrators noticed a drag on their servers associated with the influx of iOS 4 devices. Not so hot.

Good news, though: Apple has a suggested solution for these issues, and all it requires is downloading a new Exchange/ActiveSync configuration profile to your device (or, in the case of corporate deployments, scores of devices) and installing it. The new profile doesn't do much except extend the timeouts for contacting Exchange servers, but in this case that should get the job done.

If you've experienced this issue (or tried the fixed profile), let us know.

Apple PR says recent Steve Jobs emails are fake

Posted on by Laura June.
Categories: Uncategorized.
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Apple_PR_says_recent_Steve_Jobs_emails_are_fake'; If you've been anywhere near the internet in the past few hours, you've undoubtedly heard about a Steve Jobs email conversation in which he told an angry iPhone customer to "calm down" and that the iPhone 4 was "just a phone." That email chain, which was published on Boy Genius Report earlier, was also reportedly shopped to AppleInsider a few days ago -- for a price. Well, now Fortune is reporting that they've been told by a "a top Apple spokesman" that the emails are fake, and the exchange never happened. Of course, emails are notoriously easy to fake, and Apple has not been in the habit of commenting on its CEO's online wanderings, so our ears pricked up when we saw this article. We've reached out to Apple and they have independently confirmed to us that the conversation is indeed a hoax. So as usual, take all of these Jobs-uncensored dialogues with a healthy grain of salt.

NYT on restaurant reservation apps

There's a great piece in the New York Times today about the growing practice of using mobile apps to find and review restaurants. The way it works is simple for customers. Just pull out your phone (or your iPad), launch the app and find what's nearby.

Initially, OpenTable was the only app that could be used to make reservations. Now UrbanSpoon offers them as well, and customers are taking advantage. They're testing the idea in LA and Seattle, with 50 and 100 restaurants participating, respectively. Once you've eaten you can post a review. These are sorted by date, so those paying attention can see if a given place is on a slide or an upswing.

Even without these apps, I'll use my iPhone to search "coffee" or "hamburgers" with the Maps app to find a place in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Taking it that extra step -- placing a reservation -- is, as Spock would say, logical.

Helping FaceTime coexist with your firewall

Posted on by Mel Martin.

Got the FaceTime blues? It could be your router's firewall settings. Apple has posted a support document noting that some routers using firewalls, security software or other restrictive settings will require a settings change. Specifically:

To use FaceTime on a restricted Wi-Fi network, port forwarding must be enabled for ports 53, 80, 443, 4080, 5223, and 16393-16472 (UDP).

Most routers will "just work," but if you're having issues it is worth a check. In my experiences my home Belkin router didn't need any tweaking and each time I've used FaceTime from a public WiFi Hotspot it also worked swimmingly. If you're not sure it's all working and need a test, don't forget you can call Apple and talk to a real person via FaceTime at 1-888-FACETIME.

iAds begin appearing in App Store apps

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

iAds officially start to go live today, July 1st, and Markus Nigrin has started up a list of apps running Apple's official ads already. If you want to see Apple's new solution in action, you can head on over and see if you have one of those on the list. Removem's free version is one of those, which makes sense, as developer Matt Martel told us at WWDC that he was very interested in his options with iAds and other ad platforms on the iPhone. David Barnard of App Cubby also recently released a free mirror app for iPhone 4, and iAds should be in there as well.

Tiptitude is also supposed to be running iAds, but according to the two reviews on iTunes right now, a) people are downloading the app just to see iAds in action (which is pretty wild), and b) they might not be working anyway. I would say that we'll probably see widespread adoption of them before long, so you probably don't need to hurry up and download an app just to see the free advertising embedded in it. But if you have some free time to spend checking out ads, there you go.

Our own Michael Jones is reporting that he's seeing iAds continue to play sound even if the phone is muted; if you're seeing the same bug/feature, please advise.

Update: Erica Sadun reminds us that if you're trying to refresh apps to see iAds, you'll need to restart the app completely. Press and hold on the app's icon in the multitasking screen, tap the minus to kill it, and then relaunch it to see if the ads are different.

Found Footage: iPhone 4 takes to the skies

If you're afraid of heights, do not watch this video. A few guys in Los Angeles convinced a friend to loan them his new iPhone 4 for a risky little experiment: A balloon-powered flight into the air, tethered by kite string, with the video camera recording the whole time.

Yeah, we're also wondering what kind of leverage they had on this guy to make him give up the iPhone.

Aside from the relative wisdom of rigging the phone and flying it near a working radio tower, the video is actually quite compelling -- there's also a behind-the-scenes clip showing the extended process of building and flying the rig.

Thanks Jimmy!

Tapulous acquired by Disney

Disney has bought Tapulous outright, according to Techcrunch. The iPhone gaming company was one of the first on the App Store, and has been extremely successful with its Tap Tap Radiation and Tap Tap Revenge music titles.

There's no word yet on how much money was involved in the deal, but Disney has been interested in both gaming and the iDevices for a while, and obviously Tapulous proved that it could meet the Mouse House's needs. Bart Decrem, Tapulous' CEO, will reportedly become a VP at Disney.

Very impressive on Tapulous' part. There are more details coming, according to Techcrunch, so we'll update this post when we see any other news on the deal.
