iPhone 4 Bluetooth issues reported

While testing out the Jawbone Icon wireless Bluetooth headset recently, the parties I called complained of diminished sound quality on their end. They talked about overly compressed muffled sound, with decreased dynamic range. Over at the Jawbone end-user forums several threads have been discussing exactly that.

Informal testing here at TUAW central with a couple of Jawbone units on both an iPhone 3GS as well as the iPhone 4 showed that the 3GS displayed none of the problems that the iPhone 4 is demonstrating.

FaceTime video call works beautifully on airplane’s in-flight WiFi (video)

Yeah, seriously. While Aircell's Gogo in-flight WiFi service has been blocking VoIP calling services (Skype being the most obvious example) from day one, it's apparently not throwing the same brick wall in the face of Apple's new standard. Our good pals over at TUAW managed to record a (relatively) solid two minute FaceTime conversation with an iPhone 4 owner, and only after you realize that said owner is a few thousand feet above the Earth's surface does this all become a lot more interesting. We know for a fact that certain iPhone 4 owners have had difficulty with FaceTime conversations when using highly firewalled access points (like those found in hotels and corporate offices), but it seems as if seat 16A is cleared for transmission. For now, anyway. Head on past the break to peek the FaceTime ad that Apple forgot to make.

Tapbots releases Calcbot, Macheist makes it cheap

taptaptap, Tapbots, and Macheist have released a very well-designed calculator app for the iPhone and iPad called Calcbot -- it's available for 99 cents right now on the App Store. I would say that I don't know why we need another calculator app on the store, but this one's designed by Tapbots, so it's basically a clinic in UI design for the iPhone: clean and beautiful Retina Display-enabled buttons, gorgeous animations, a swipe-to-access extra set of functions, and the ability to go back and look at past calculations and even email them off. Basically, this is a calculator app you want to take a look at, even if you already have a calculator app.

Plus, Macheist is sweetening the deal as usual -- that 99 cent price is for a limited time only, and if you do pick up the app, you can spread the word about Calcbot on Facebook and pick up a free copy of the Socialite social networking app, which will allow you to manage all of your various social personalities all in one app interface. So basically it's two pretty quality 99 cent apps for the price of just one. Excellent deal, especially if you're already a Tapbots fan.

Facebook for iPhone down – crashing repeatedly

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Facebook for iPhone seems to be experiencing some — hopefully temporary — problems as we’re getting flooded with users saying it’s crashing for them on launch, repeatedly.

So take some solace in knowing it’s not you or your iPhone, it’s Facebook. Feel free to sound off in the comments until they get it fixed…

Update: As mentioned below, remember Facebook is a website and you can still go to http://www.facebook.com on your iPhone while you’re for the app to come back online.

Loyal TUAW reader Bill G. was kind enough to face chat with us this evening. What made this especially fun was that he was in flight over Arkansas at the time. On the way to Texas via American Airlines service, Bill was able to use FaceTime with the plane's in-flight WiFi service.

It was a great connection given the circumstances. Video did flake out a little towards the end of our experiment (although audio continued just fine) and might have re-established itself if we had given it a little more time. All in all, just chalk this one up to the "wow, that's so cool!" list for the iPhone 4.

Unity CEO disses Jobs on gaming

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

Unity CEO David Helgason gave a talk at the Develop conference, going on this week in Brighton, England, and had some harsh words for Steve Jobs on supporting iPhone gaming. Jobs previously said that using "middleware" like Unity to develop iPhone games "produces sub-standard apps," but Helgason fires back that Jobs "doesn't understand the economics of game development fundamentally." Most developers, Helgason seems to be saying, can't be jack-of-all-trades with their code -- they need libraries like Unity to do some of the lifting, especially on smaller-scale platforms like the App Store.

Stuart Dredge at Mobile Entertainment is doing a great job of covering all of the other iPhone gaming news coming out of Develop as well -- he's got talks by the developers of Ngmoco's Godfinger, Rolando's Simon Oliver, and Ideaworks Game Studio, the company that brought World at War: Zombies to the iPhone for Activision (that last talk sounds similar to the one we saw earlier this year at GDC).

If there's a theme among everything developers are saying, it's probably that they're finding flexibility a must on the App Store -- while an app may be developed with one feature or pay model in mind, things often have to change quickly during development or even after the app goes live. Lots of interesting things to read in there if you're interested in iPhone game development.

Colorware douses iPhone 4 in double rainbow, might just solve your reception issues

Posted on by Darren Murph.

Given just how much that white iPhone 4 bumper is about to cost you on eBay, it seems as if a Colorware'd alternative has never been a better bargain. The master of gadget coloration is back once more, this time promising to dress Apple's latest problem child up with just about any combination of hues that you choose. Consumers can splash paint on the frame, back, button, SIM card tray and earbuds, with the minimum price set at $250 for a sent-in device. There's no guarantee that a coat of Colorware will serve to remedy those awfully annoying reception issues, but at least you can pocket a beautiful reminder of just how happy a pair of colorful bands can make the average vacationer. And that, friends, is priceless.

Engineer Claims Consumer Reports iPhone 4 Reception Problem Study Is Flawed

Yes, the iPhone 4 is broken / No, the iPhone 4 is not broken

Posted on by Nilay Patel.
Categories: Uncategorized.
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Yes_the_iPhone_4_is_broken_No_the_iPhone_4_is_not_broken'; The controversy over the iPhone 4's antenna issues continues to grow, particularly after Consumer Reports confirmed yesterday that every iPhone 4 suffers from signal attenuation when the phone is held with the lower left corner covered -- a report that we confirmed with results from our own custom signal metering app. At this point, there's no longer any question in our minds that the iPhone 4's antenna can be made to lose signal by holding it "wrong" -- and we definitely think it's more than a little silly that simply holding the phone in your left hand has been nicknamed the "death grip."

That said, however, it's not at all clear what the real-world effects of the antenna issue actually are for most people -- as we've repeatedly said, several iPhone 4s owned by the Engadget staff (including our review unit) have never experienced so much as a single dropped call, while others suffer from signal issues that results in lost calls and unresponsive data in a dramatic way. What's more, at this point Apple's sold well over two million iPhone 4s, and we simply haven't heard the sort of outcry from users that we'd normally hear if a product this high-profile and this popular had a showstopping defect. Honestly, it's puzzling -- we know that the phone has an antenna-related problem, but we're simply not able to say what that issue actually means for everyday users.

So we're doing what we can do: we've collected reports from every member of the Engadget staff who's using the phone, as well as reached out to a variety of tech industry colleagues for their experiences. As you'll see, it seems like most of our peers seem to be doing perfectly fine with their iPhone 4s, but the people who are having problems are having maddening issues in an inconsistent way. We'd say it all comes down to the network -- particularly in New York City, where AT&T just completed a major upgrade -- but even that isn't a consistent factor in predicting experience. Ultimately, we just won't know what's really going on until Apple comes clean and addresses this issue (and the growing PR nightmare it's become), but for now we can say with some certainty that not everyone is affected, and those that are seem to be in the minority. Read on for the full report.

Is Consumer Reports iPhone 4 antenna problem study flawed?

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Was Consumer Reports iPhone 4 antenna problem study, the one picked up by mainstream media and used to hammer Apple and iPhone 4, flawed from the get go? If you’re just joining us, after first telling users not to worry about iPhone 4 antenna problems, Consumer Reports came back and said they couldn’t recommend it based on the antenna issues — even though they still listed it as the best smartphone on the planet.

Back to the question. Electromagnetic engineer Bob Egan thinks Consumer Reports tests were, in fact, flawed:

Consumer reports “RF” engineers should know better than to think they can run an engineering grade test for an issue like this in a shielded room. And certainly not one with people in it.

He goes on to describe why — hit the read link below for the details — but he also bottom-lines it:

I’m not saying that Apple has no [hardware] problem and they surely have a [software] issue. But I’m still wondering that if the software signal algorithm was not AFU’d in the first place how many, if anyone would talking about this “problem”

What’s more:

We also don’t know if placing a finger on the antenna bridge is detuning the antenna or detuning the receiver itself. And neither does Consumer Reports.

So Apple remains silent, experts argue, consumers have or don’t have problems, and the mainstream media snowballs the story. In other words, the saga continues.

[Viewpoints -- Thanks Phil!]

iLuv Casual Fabric Case for iPad – quick look

Posted on by Georgia.

The iLuv Casual Fabric iPad Case with Band Clip for iPadis a pouch-style enclosure that you can use to keep all that precious glass and aluminum tucked away safe and sound.

The iLuv case itself is snug. I could shake it — gently — upside down with only minor panic that it might slip out. However, with the velcro belt in place it’s locked in. Shake away!

The outside is durable fabric and slightly padded. It will prevent bumps and scrapes but I wouldn’t want to risk drops, especially not high ones. The inside is lined with soft, plush material to really pamper your iPad. This is a great case for those who like to carry around their iPad in their brief case or backpack and do not want to worry about it being scratched or damaged.

Black with orange, pink with purple, and beige with blue are your color choices. It is quite a stylish pouch case, though I do feel that it holds appeal more to the female audience.

Take a look at the video for more. iLuv Casual Fabric iPad Case with Band Clip for iPad is available from the TiPb iPad Accessory Store.

iPhone 4 unlocked, says Dev Team member

It took some doing, but the iPhone 4 has been unlocked. Unfortunately, you can't get your hands on what you'll need to do it yourself just yet.

A member of the iPhone Dev Team who goes by PlanetBeing has posted a picture of an iPhone 4 on Canada's Bell network. The feat was made more difficult with the iPhone 4 because iOS 4 on AT&T needed a soup-to-nuts rewrite of ultrasn0w.

We don't have a timeline for when the updated ultrasn0w and Spirit will be released, so we'll keep our ears pressed to the ground on that one.

For now, at least one iPhone 4 is flying free in Canada! Spread your wings, little iPhone, and keep those Canadians away from your lower left-hand corner.

Is the iPhone 4 controversy much ado about nothing or a really big problem?

Posted on by Mel Martin.

What's going on with the iPhone? It certainly depends on who's talking. This morning Dan Frommer of Silicon Alley Insider says the iPhone reception problem is a non-issue and will blow over.

"You can make calls, use the internet, and do everything else you should be able to do on the iPhone 4 all of the time, or almost all of the time."

"But there's no reason for a huge recall. This isn't a faulty car that might kill you. It's a phone, and it's a phone that works."

On the other side of the ring people are screaming for blood, and are sure the phone is just unusable. It's hard to know what to believe.
