Glue: The social network and iPhone app you can get stuck in

Although it drives my wife nuts, I like social networking apps. I've been tweeting since the Twitter bird first hatched from a little blue egg and I leave a trail of FourSquare check-ins wherever I wander. On the other hand, it seems like that for every really cool social network that appears, there are a lot of them that I use once and then drop.

When I first heard about Glue, my instinct was to give it a try and then move on. However, what I've found is another fun tool that is quite a bit different from FourSquare (which is all about locations) and Twitter. Glue is described as a "social network for entertainment," and that's a very good description.

Instead of FourSquare's "Where am I now?" and Twitter's "What am I doing?," Glue asks what you're currently up to -- watching a TV show, listening to music, reading a book, watching a movie, playing a video game, chatting about a celebrity, thinking about a topic, or drinking wine.

Glue builds a profile of your likes and dislikes by letting you rate a number of items in each category. Like FourSquare, Glue rewards your activity with stickers (FourSquare calls them badges) that give you bragging rights among your peers. I'm happy to report that due to my vast amounts of dislikes when it comes to current movies and music, I have acquired the "Debbie Downer" sticker. Unlike FourSquare, once you've unlocked 7 stickers, Glue gives you a way to get real (not virtual) stickers to paste on your laptop, iPad case, or children.

Apple posts iPhone 4 press conference video, ’smartphone antenna performance’ page

Well, that was quick. Not only has Apple already posted the complete video of today's iPhone 4 presser (minus the Q&A), but it's also put up a special "smartphone antenna performance" page that offers pictures and videos aplenty of the antenna comparisons shown during the press conference. And you didn't think today could get any weirder. Hit up the links below to see for yourself.

Update: We've embedded videos just after the jump of Apple's gamut of antenna tests. The iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, Samsung Omnia II, BlackBerry Bold 9700 and HTC Droid Eris are represented.

Rounding up the news and views on Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference

Apple iPhone 4 press conference

Well, Apple’s special iPhone 4 press conference is over and it’s all said and done, the facts and figures, the apologies and deflections, the updates and announcements, and quite a bit of downright confusion. TiPb’s iPhone 4 review covered a lot of that — a wondrous handset with a few killer flaws. Taken as a whole, many users will be extremely happy. Others… not so much. It really is the ecstasy with one crucial spot of antenna band agony.

If you missed any of the press conference coverage or you — like us — just want a chance to digest and mull it over, to see if it holds up or falls apart, here’s your chance:

So now the only question that remains is whether Apple’s managed to turn the the bad publicity around, if they’ve done enough to end “antennagate” and get iPhone 4 back on track…

The iPhone Antenna Song – Friday fun video

Apple held a press conference today to discuss the antenna issue on the iPhone 4. To open the conference, they showed a YouTube video titled “The iPhone Antenna Song”.

Even though the song takes Apple’s side, it’s great to see Apple have a sense of humor about this whole mess and give a fan some spotlight. This song also takes a jab at certain blogs… — maybe that’s why Steve liked it so much?

Apple posts iPhone 4 Antenna Press Conference Video, Antenna Information Page

That was fast! Apple has not only posted up the video of their iPhone 4 Antenna Press conference from earlier today (sadly, without the Q&A), they have also put up a dedicated page to discussion signal strength issues with the death grip:

On a mobile phone, signal loss typically occurs when your hand attenuates the most sensitive part of the antenna. In the photos and videos below, we demonstrate how different grips cause attenuation on many popular smartphones — including iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

Say what you will about Apple PR, but when they decide to make a move, they move fast and make as big a splash as they can. Give it a watch and let us know: are you convinced?

iPhone 4 press conference, by the numbers

Apple dropped a lot of interesting numbers during the press conference this morning, from both their own research and AT&T's data. Steve Jobs also said that three million iPhone 4s have been sold to date, so let's put this into perspective.

.55 percent: This is the percentage of iPhone 4 users who have contacted AppleCare regarding antenna or reception issues. This comes out to only 16,500 AppleCare cases. We are not sure if this includes issues related to the proximity sensor; however, Jobs later acknowledged in the press conference that the proximity sensor will be addressed in a future software update.

1.7 percent: This is the number of iPhone 4s returned to AT&T since the initial release 22 days ago, which comes out to roughly 51,000 returns. By contrast, 6 percent of iPhone 3GS were returned in its early days -- and the numbers of those sold are lower than the iPhone 4.

The final number is that AT&T is reporting that less than one more call per 100 placed is dropped compared to the iPhone 3GS -- more calls are dropped than the earlier model, but it's only one more per one hundred. However, as was said in our liveblog discussion, this number probably does not take into account the calls that failed to connect in the first place.

Jobs clears up proximity sensor fix, white iPhone 4, and international plans at press conference

Steve Jobs cleared up a few pending iPhone 4 issues quickly near the end of today's press conference today. First, he said that Apple would be releasing a software fix soon for the proximity sensor issues customers have been experiencing. A fix for that problem would be available in the next software update.

Second, the white iPhone 4 is still due out by the end of this month, so if you've been waiting for that version, you won't have too much longer to wait. And finally, the iPhone 4 will come, Jobs said, to 17 countries on July 30th, as you can see above. Congratulations, international customers -- your release day is coming soon!

Apple offers free case as iPhone 4 fix

Posted on by Megan Lavey.

Steve Jobs just announced today that the company will issue a free case to every iPhone 4 customer. If you've already purchased a bumper case for your iPhone 4, you are entitled to a refund.

You can apply for the free case through Apple's web site starting later this week. The company plans to source cases from third parties due to a shortage in bumper cases, so iPhone 4 customers will have a choice of a few different cases. If you are still not satisfied with the iPhone, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of your purchase. Steve Jobs said plainly about the decision that "we want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund."

The move comes three weeks and a day after the first customers began taking their new iPhones home and experiencing both antenna and proximity sensor issues. The growing backlash against Apple escalated earlier this week after Consumer Reports said they would not recommend the device, even though it comes in at the top of their smartphone ratings. This was followed by rumors of a possible recall, posts being pulled down from the Apple forums and finally today's conference.

Apple to give away free cases to iPhone 4 users

Posted on by Paul Miller.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Digg this! Apple's not really ready to say it's sorry about the iPhone 4 antenna design, but it is willing to give all you darn squeaky wheels free cases for your trouble. Since Apple can't build its own Bumpers fast enough, it will give you a few options and let you decide, then send it your way for free as long as you purchased the phone before September 30th. Not good enough for you? Well, if you already bought a bumper from Apple you'll get a refund, and you can also return your phone for a full refund within 30 days as long as it's unharmed.

This solution comes at the end of 22 days of Apple engineers "working their butts off," according to Steve, with "physics" ultimately being pinned as the main culprit. Apple claims you can replicate the left-handed "death grip" bar-dropping problem on the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, and Samsung Omnia II, and that "phones aren't perfect." Steve also claims that only 0.55% of people who bought the iPhone 4 have called into AppleCare to complain about the antenna, and the phone has a 1.7% return rate at AT&T, compared to 6% with the 3GS, though he would cop to a slight increase in dropped calls over the iPhone 3GS. For this Steve has what he confesses to be a pet theory: that 3GS users were using the case they had from the 3G, and therefore weren't met with the horrible reality of a naked, call dropping handset. Hence the free case solution, which will probably satisfy some, infuriate others, and never even blip onto the radar of many of the massive horde of consumers that's devoured this product in unprecedented numbers.

Apple: No software fix for iPhone 4 antenna issues

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

When asked during the iPhone 4 press conference if there would be a software fix for iPhone 4’s antenna issues, Steve Jobs and Scott Forestall both said an emphatic (borderline hostile) “no”.

While Apple offered apologies, facts and figures, demonstrations of other smartphones having the same issue, and free bumpers and cases to take care of their customers, they said no software fix was forthcoming:

Q (Josh, Engadget): NY Times says this might have a software fix, is this something that can be helped with software? Steve: We just spent the last hour going through how the iPhone 4 drops only 1 more call per hundred than the 3GS. … Go talk to the Times, because you guys talk to yourselves a lot, and they’re just making this stuff up.

Forstall jumped up on stage: “That statement is patently false. Can we continue to tune the way the baseband interacts with the network? Yes, and we do this all the time. But that statement is untrue.” Steve: “One many statements lately that fall into that category.”

So does that mean no software fix, or is this like when they said no iPod with video or no phone?
