Michael Bay directs Transformers 3 with iPad 3G
Famous movie director Michael Bay is using his iPad at work. Specifically, Mr. Bay has been spotted with his iPad 3G in hand while directing Transformers 3. In the photo above, he’s showing Patrick Dempsey how a scene is supposed to look.
We don’t know about you, but we at TiPb love to see the different ways that people are using their iPads to improve their lives whether it be for work, home, school, or play.

Why the white iPhone 4 has been delayed: glass supplier
Many of us were disappointed when June 15th arrived and the white iPhone was not available for pre-order or reservation. The day before the launch of the iPhone 4, Apple provided a vague explanation claiming that the white iPhone 4 had “proven more challenging to manufacture than expected.” It turns out that this manufacturing problem comes from Lens Technology, Apple’s glass supplier.
A worker from Lens’ quality control department has allegedly admitted that the company’s screen-printing workshop may currently be dealing with some issues with the white iPhone 4 covers. Specifically, the factory’s still working out the perfect combination of paint thickness and opacity — the former to ensure the next sub-contractor has enough clearance for the digitizer overlay, and the latter for the absolute whiteness that Jony Ive and co. strive for.
So the delay is simply about how thick the layer of white paint should be – certainly not something I was expecting, but it makes perfect sense. Leave it to Jony Ive to delay the launch of a product because it doesn’t look exactly how he wants it to. Surprisingly, this doesn’t bother me. Part of the iPhone 4’s appeal is its design and I expect mine to look perfectly white when I finally have it in my hand. I’m willing to wait for this perfection – albeit, not very patiently.

iPad at Work: Audio Visual Coordinator
How does an audio visual coordinator use his iPad to get the job done and what iPad apps help get him through his day? TiPb’s iPad at work contest aims to bring you just such slices of the iPad life. I am the AV coordinator for a school district. My tasks include things like video editing and equipment repair, but the bulk of time is spend managing and running the theatre.
Of course I use my iPad for the usual synching with our exchange server. I use Safari to log into our help desk to check requests people have submitted to the AV dept. Things is a must on my iPad. It is in sync with Things on my iPhone and MacBook Pro. Everything from daily todo’s to major events taking place in the theater are organized in/with Things. When a new help ticket comes into my email inbox, it goes straight into Things.
In our main theater, we have an ETC Ion lighting console that can be remotely controlled from the iPad with the iRFR app. Simply turing lights on or off while on the catwalk, or sitting in the audience or fully controlling the moving lights are done from the iPad. When students are running the board, I can monitor the cue list from my iPad as a show is going on, even taking notes on individual cues.
The main sound mixing board can be accessed via VNC and controlled from anywhere in the theater. Instead of mixing the sound from the back of the hall, I can be sitting where the audience will be, or various places throughout the hall.
Simple Note is used for all note taking in meetings and anytime I need to jot down some info such as part numbers, if I am working on a repair.
In my office, my iPad is on my desk in a Griffin Loop stand, ready to be used as an additional monitor with Air Display.
Since i got my iPad, my MacBook Pro has seldom left my desk, when I used to carry it across campus everyday.

Review: Cocoto Magic Circus for iPhone

The only real surprise is how long it took family friendly Apple to yank iChatr — the chat-roulette-style app for iPhone 4 — from the iTunes App Store.
If you’re familiar with what goes on in these kinds of apps, the (predominantly male) nudity and sexual activity, then this is no surprise. If you’re not familiar, you probably downloaded it, became familiar quickly, and near instantly complained to Apple prompting the removal.
According to the developers, SKJM:
“The iChatr application has currently been removed from the App Store due to reports of a number of users exposing themselves during the random video chat sessions. We are currently discussing possible solutions to the problem with Apple.”
Jeff Scott from 148.apps adds:

An iPhone DSLR prototype housing hits snags

A fella over at iPhoneDSLR.com has been working on a prototype housing for the iPhone that allows for attaching Canon EF lenses. Y'know, those big honkin' ones you see on the Canon DSLR cameras. Basically -- in theory, at least -- the iPhone lens focuses through the SLR lens, and you can manually focus and zoom the Canon lens as needed.
Definitely a neat idea, though, if you follow what he's doing, he's hitting a couple of snags. One major one being that the iPhone camera is unable to focus on the image projected by the Canon lens. Though the inventor of the housing admits he's by no means a professional photographer, I'm definitely interested in seeing if he can get the help he needs to get this to work well enough to go to market.

iOS4 apps: Amazon.com, WebMD, SimplyTweet, Mapquest, Audible
It’s been a while since our last iOS 4 compatible apps roundup so we figured it was time for another. I’ve seen quite a few updates come through in the past week or so but here’s the ones that caught my eye the most. And as always, if you see any you think are above the curve, let us know in the comments!

Amazon.com App
Amazon has a pretty appealing iPhone app. I frequently browse it on my iPhone while laying in bed or when I’m sitting somewhere bored. You can not only browse, but manage your account and purchase things. The entire process is pretty simple. Amazon has now added high resolution images to support the iPhone 4’s retina display. Best of all, the app’s free.
SimplyTweet 3
SimplyTweet has long been at the top of my list for great Twitter clients. This time around, it got even better. Their update for iOS4 is probably one of the largest I have seen. They’ve not only added resolution enhancement for iPhone 4, but background uploading, fast app switching, and several other features. This update also seems to fix a lot of bugs. If you’re looking for a more than decent Twitter client and don’t mind dropping around $5, SimplyTweet is right up there with Osfoora and Twitter for iPhone.
Mapquest 4 Mobile
There’s a lot of quality navigation apps out there, but for some of them, you’ll spend a pretty penny. Mapquest 4 Mobile is a very decent GPS app that won’t cost you anything. It’s been updated to support background voice navigation under iOS4. It’s also a very decent app to view common things such as restaurants, gas stations, coffee shops, schools, etc.. I’ve used it for a few weeks now and it suits my navigation needs just fine. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s free to check it out!
WebMD
WebMD is an incredibly useful tool for looking up a lot of medical issues all in one place. It has features such as a symptom checker, treatment recommendations, and my favorite feature, the pill identification tool. If you’ve ever found random pills in a drawer or the label is peeled off, odds are you can probably narrow it down to a few with this. I’m not exactly sure what all WebMD has added but I’m pretty sure fast app switching is now working (assuming they aren’t just caching like some apps did under 3.x), and it seems to look a little better on the iPhone 4 than it did before. I’m not 100% on this so if anyone knows for sure, drop it in the comments!
Audible
Audible is a great site (and app) to access your digital audiobooks. Once you have an account, you simply sign into the app and it’ll show what you have available. It also gives you a few choices for new users for free (not that great of a selection, but there is some). The app is free and now supports feature in iOS4 such as background downloading and background playback, which is awesome for those of you who want to listen to a book while being able to do other things on your iPhone. It’s a free download in the app store so if you are an audiobook fan, go and grab it!
