Apple starts refunding Bumper purchases automagically

Automatic refunds, or so the email says. We've been on the receiving end of a deluge of tips this morning pointing out that Apple has begun funneling cash back into its users' pockets -- a most unusual event, to be sure -- to live up to its retroactive promise of free Bumpers for all (who buy their iPhone 4 before September 30). If the particular wording is to be trusted, that should mean that even those who haven't yet bothered to put in a claim, but did purchase a Bumper, will find themselves enriched in due course. Apple estimates this bandaid solution to its antenna problems will cost $175 million in real cash money, but we suspect the biggest price to pay will be in the form of pride and reputation.

iOS 4 and iPhone 3G is a match made in… what’s the opposite of heaven?

Do you have an iPhone 3G? Me, too. Have you updated it to iOS 4 yet? If the veins are popping out of your neck and your skin is turning green, you probably have. If your iPhone 3G hasn't been updated to iOS 4 yet, then do your iPhone, yourself, and your sanity a favor: DON'T UPDATE YOUR iPHONE 3G TO iOS 4!

Apple's support forums are buzzing like an angry hornet's nest on reports that iOS 4 has all but crippled users' iPhone 3Gs. By far the most-reported problem is generalized slowness; iOS 4 runs so slowly on many people's iPhone 3Gs that the phones are almost unusable.

The video above, though a parody, is actually a fair representation of what's been happening to the iPhone 3G under iOS 4. Click "Read More" to see some ways to fix the problem.

iPhone ‘End Call’ sticker is an ironic solution to your reception problem

Posted on by Darren Murph.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Not sold on those iPhone Antenna-aid bandages? Fret not, as we've got a whole 'nother round of laughs coming your way. What started as a concept has landed on Etsy as a buyable product: the 'End Call' vinyl sticker. As you'd expect, you simply place this guy over the iPhone 4's "weak spot" and then press it whenever you'd like to conveniently drop whatever call you're on. The only problem? This $4 add-on actually won't accomplish what it says in plain English.

App demo: AudioBookShelf

iBooks gives you a great way to organize ebooks and PDF's, but what about audiobooks? Unfortunately, iTunes still blobs everything together like a big ol' playlist in iTunes. AudioBookShelf is an app designed to make your audio book shelf more enticing. Unfortunately it won't play the audio books in iTunes, giving you instead 12 hand-picked audio books from a library of classics. Favorites like Treasure Island and Gulliver's Travels (one of my favorite books) are read with clear voices, as the developers looked to only include those with quality recordings. See the video for the app in question, or visit the App Store to see the official description and full list of books included in the price of $1.99. The app is universal, so one price puts it on the iPad and iPhone.

Here come the Apple bumper case refunds…

Bumper case refunds

Looks like Apple has begun the process of refunding Apple Online Store bumper case orders. *MacRumors says:

Existing back-ordered bumper cases have also been processed for refund. We expect the process will continue over the next few days. Apple is also expected to provide a method for in-store purchasers to also receive a refund but has provided no details yet.

As part of their iPhone 4 “antennagate” press conference, Steve Jobs announced Apple would be giving away free cases, including Apple Bumpers, to every iPhone 4 customer as a way to make them happy and alleviate any concerns about reception issues.

Anyone else get their refund notice yet?

AT&T activation numbers show iPhone 4 dominance

I guess we can take potshots at AT&T all day, but the proof is in the pudding. Or activations, in this case: 3.2 million iPhone activations in Q2, which is 10 times the number for the 3GS the year before. Oblivious to the noise about AT&T's network, a full 27% of those activations are new customers for AT&T, which has to be chafing someone's drawers over at Verizon. Here's hoping AT&T takes the $30.8 billion in revenue and sinks it right back into infrastructure or lowering cost to consumers. Full press release from AT&T here.

XGear SHADOW case for iPad review

Posted on by Rene Ritchie.
Categories: Uncategorized.

XGear SHADOW case for iPad is for those who want a tough exterior case for the back of their iPad but want to keep the front completely open for easy access. so, yes, it’s pretty much identical to the XGear Folio case for iPad I looked at earlier… without the front cover.

It’s black, it’s got a futuristic diagonal ridge texture going on, and while — again — it probably wouldn’t stop a bullet it does seem strong enough to repel most bumps, bashes, scratches, and scrapes that come anywhere near your iPad.

While I worried the four small corner tabs wouldn’t be enough to secure it safely and persistently to my iPad, it’s been snug for more than a couple of weeks now and shows no signs of letting go until I make it. The corners also double as mini bumpers to protect the sides of your iPad.

If you want something slick and sleek to keep the unibody aluminum back of your iPad in mint condition, check out the XGear SHADOW case for iPad available from the TiPb iPad Accessory Store.

Pros

  • Carbon outer wrap is tough
  • Looks good.

Cons

  • Not as tight fitting as a skin
