Apples says Droid X does attenuate too

Motorola Droid X antenna attenuation video

Apple has posted yet another competing smartphone attenuation video, this time rounding out their infamous collection with Motorola’s just-launched Verizon Droid X. The video shows the aforementioned monster of a phone dropping from 3 out of 4 bars to done when death-gripped.

Once again, however, no demonstration is made of any iPhone 4-style death-touch de-tuning.

So yeah, you can imagine how our friends over at Android Central are reacting…

Who does that leave for next, Palm, LG? Does Apple need to finish what they’ve started or just let it go already?

Video after the break…

Apple keeps antennagate alive with Droid X’s ‘kill switch’ (video)

Posted on by Ross Miller.

We had a feeling Apple wasn't done showing off the apparent reception woes of its competitors -- after all, the company already updated once this week with the Nokia N97 mini. Now it's going after Motorola's celebrity of the moment (and known iPhone 4 bully), the Droid X. You can see Cupertino's results in the video after the break, but unlike Apple's other videos, we can't seem to recreate this one as easily with our Droid Xs. But hey, it's not like anyone's gonna buy a big phone anyway, right?

So, you have an iPhone 4, but you're missing all of that Cydia love? Well, in a recent interview with Make It Work, Jay Freeman (known to the jailbreak world as Saurik) talked about the iPhone 4 jailbreak. But wait, there's more -- he also showed the Cydia store on his iPhone 4, which is the App Store replacement found on jailbroken iOS devices.

An extended interview will air tomorrow on KNX 1070 Newsradio in LA from 1 - 2 PM PDT, and in San Francisco on KSFO 560 between 3 - 4 PM PDT.

Review: Keymote for iPhone

This app takes a different tack from most remote control offerings in the App Store. It populates your iPhone's screen with realistic-looking keys which trigger custom keyboard shortcuts on your Mac. It's a well-designed app that could boost the productivity of users who spend a lot of time in specific apps, but for many users, fitting Keymote into your workflow will be difficult.

Those wacky Boinx guys release You Gotta See This! iPhone 4 app

Over the past few days Boinx, the German developers of Boinx TV and other exciting products, have been teasing everyone with word of a new iPhone 4 app. Well, in a highly-publicized live event this morning (evening in Deutschland), the company announced a new app, You Gotta See This! (US$1.99). It's the first iPhone app for the company, so they introduced it to the world with a lot of fanfare.

The app requires an iPhone 4. Why? Because it uses the internal gyroscope of the device to automatically take photos while you're moving the camera around you. It then assembles the photos into one of six collage themes in near real-time. You don't need to worry about aligning edges of photos; the app knows the orientation of the iPhone 4 during the moment when each photo is being captured, so it takes care of the alignment for you.

Boinx developers came up with the idea of You Gotta See This! after WWDC 2010, where they realized that regular panorama apps weren't interesting enough to really show someone else what you were looking at. I downloaded the app during the announcement and put it to use immediately taking the photo at the top of the post. Of course, it's just my overgrown back yard, but it's pretty cool for a first try.

This type of photography is called "panography," and the Boinx team found artistic inspiration in the work of David Hockney, an artist who worked with photocollages. Hockney is also known for his portraits painted with Brushes on iPhone and iPad.

Blackbox i10 noise cancelling earbuds tap into iPod / iPhone dock connector for power, pleasure

Oh, sure -- you've got at least 893.1 options (at last count, anyway) when it comes to noise cancelling headphones for your iDevice, but do any of those plug directly into the dock connector instead of requiring a separate battery? Exactly. That's the claim to fame for Blackbox's i10, a new set of earbuds that rely on power from your iPod or iPhone in order to achieve that active noise cancelling action that the young bucks are so crazy about these days. According to the company, these will filter out 92 percent of background noise using Phitek Systems' ANR technology, and the inline remote makes it easy to adjust volume and the like. They're available today for £79.99 ($123) over in the UK, but only heaven knows when they'll mosey over to North America.

[Thanks, Sharmee]

The look of free: iPhone 4 cases offered by Apple

Posted on by Michael Rose.

As noted earlier this morning, Apple's Bumper refund & free case program is underway for the iPhone 4. While everyone knows the look of the Bumper (and the cheap ways to make your own), the third-party cases included in the program may be less familiar. Below, a gallery to fill you in.

It's worth noting that although you can get yourself a free Snap Case, Shield Micra, Motif, Reveal Etch, Fitted or PixelSkin HD case from Apple, the company will not be refunding previous purchases of any third-party cases; you can only get your money back on a Bumper.

If you haven't chimed in yet, please do take our poll about which case you think is the yummiest.

Case order now fixed in the gallery.

Dragon Dictation updated with iOS 4 support and some new features

Dragon Dictation is one of the most popular free apps on the iPhone and iPad, and now it has been updated to support iOS 4. Nuance Communications, creators of the app, have added a pop-up toolbar that allows you to speak a status update and send it directly to Facebook or Twitter. You can also speak and send the text to the clipboard. As in the original version, you can dictate emails and text messages.

Another nice to feature is the app now saves your dictated text if you are interrupted by a phone call. This latest version also supports U.K English now, as well as German. The app already supports Spanish, Italian and French.

I've had an advance copy of the app for a week, and I can confirm it works as advertised, although my high school German is a bit rusty so I didn't try that feature.

Someday, I hope, Apple will build complete speech recognition into the iPhone and iPad. If they do, I hope they use the Nuance speech engine, which is very accurate and easy to use. Until then, Dragon Dictation is a must download for use with email, social networking and texting. The app runs on iOS3.1 or later on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
