Nokia N8 vs. iPhone 4: camera showdown

Posted on by Vlad Savov.

What's the first thing you should do when you get the N8? Considering it packs the biggest image sensor embedded in a phone yet, Carl Zeiss optics, and an eight-digit pixel count, it seemed obvious to us that the answer was to take it on a picture- and video-taking stroll around London. On our way out we saw our iPhone 4 looking all sad and lonely, so we went ahead and brought it along as well. Below you shall find one gallery of pure, unadulterated N8 sample shots, another interspersed with the iPhone's results for comparison's sake, and a final one with side-by-side 100 percent crops from each image taker. Once you've digested all of those, we suggest hopping past the break and tucking into some tasty video comparisons for dessert.

Naturally, all the images are entirely unretouched (but for our masterly watermarking) and the iPhone 4's HDR hocus pocus has been left off. We've also provided a zip file containing all the full-res imagery shot with the N8 in a link below.

A quick note is also merited about the N8's resolution. The sensor's display ratio is 4:3, which means that full 12 megapixel shots are only available in those dimensions. The camera software, however, defaults to shooting 9 megapixel snaps at the increasingly popular 16:9 ratio -- this is done simply by cropping away the "excess" bars at the top and bottom of the image, meaning that the 9 megapixel images are giving us identical performance as the 12 megapixel ones, they're just chopped down (from 4000 x 3000 to 4000 x 2248) for the sake of convenience. Now, on with the show!

iPod, iPhone, and iPad: why Apple is so much more successful than Google and Microsoft

Apple vs Google vs Microsoft following iPod, iPhone, iPad

Yeah, crediting the iPod, iPhone, and iPad for why Apple is so much more successful than Google or Microsoft is a loaded headline, or would be if Mark Sigal from O’Reilly didn’t point it out in so succinct a fashion:

The following inconvenient facts must be an affront to the horizontal, commoditized, open, market share zealots. Apple has launched three major new product lines since 2001: the iPod (October, 2001); the iPhone (July, 2007); and the iPad (April, 2010).

The company’s stock is up 3,000 percent since the launch of iPod, 125 percent since the launch of iPhone, and 20 percent since the launch of iPad.

In that same time period, the major devotees of the loosely coupled model — Microsoft, Google, Intel and Dell — have been, at best, outpaced by Apple 6X (in the case of Google dating back to the launch of iPod) and at worst, either been wiped out (in the case of Dell) or treaded water (in the cases of Microsoft and Intel) in every comparison period.

ChangeWave’s Paul Carton says consumer interest in Android is rising at the expense of iPhone, but at the same time Horace Dediu from asymco points out that counting non-Google approved Android devices, and Android devices like Verizon’s Fascinate where Google is torn out, Google actually makes far more money from iPhone where they’re the default search engine, map provider, etc.

Now, just like Stephan Colbert isn’t truthful but “truthy”, and dime store popsicles aren’t chocolate but “chocolatey”, Google isn’t really open but “openy“, and neither is Microsoft, but it doesshow that just who won — or will win — what PC or smartphone war against Apple depends entirely on how you frame the terms of victory.

WordPress for iOS has updated to version 2.6, which adds the ability to record video from within the app and upload it to a blog.

Other improvements include an overhaul of locally saved drafts, which brings it more in line with the web version -- including the ability to autosave while the post is being written. Also, version 2.6 implements a full media library within the app.

Apple closes Beijing store temporarily to thwart iPhone 4 resellers

Posted on by Dave Caolo.

Despite the iPhone's official release in China, a grey market continues to thrive. So much so that shoppers are buying units from Apple for private resale in such large quantity, that Apple had to temporarily down the Beijing Apple Store.

According to M.I.C Gadget, the trouble started when Apple lifted the 2-per-customer restriction at the Beijing store. People were buying up to 30 iPhones at a time, which they would privately resell for a profit. In fact, many were selling right outside the store. Things got out of hand as the crowd quickly swelled and scuffles broke out between the mass-quantity buyers and individuals looking for a single phone. Security eventually shut the store down.

Within hours, the store re-opened with a new policy. Customers must show ID when making a purchase. They may purchase only 1 iPhone at a time, which will be unboxed and activated in the store by an employee before the customer is allowed to leave. This policy has now been extended to all four of China's Apple Stores.

Considering the high demand and extreme shortage of iPhones in China, it's understandable how a grey market develops. This was an unfortunate circumstance. Good on Apple Store security and management for addressing it in a timely fashion.

More Apple TV fun: 1080p in, Xcode, PhoneView

Apple TV - no apps, games, or web

As Apple TV (2010) makes its way out into the world people are figuring out more of what you can and can’t do with it, including Engadget who says there’s 1080p in (but not out) via iTunes:

We just ran some tests on the AppleTV’s playback limits by streaming 1080p movie trailers in iTunes and managed to verify murmurs saying the device can accept 1080p content. Unfortunately, output is a different story, since it downscales the image back to 720p on your display

TUAW meanwhile plugged it into PhoneView to access the AFC service area, tried Ping (the network IP command, not iTunes social music!), VLC, used TinyUmbrella to save SHSH blobs, and more:

You can register your Apple TV device in Xcode (it shows up immediately) to the iOS developer portal but you cannot perform any actual development — yet. Xcode complains that Apple TV does not “support development”. Bummer that.

Sounds like there will be fun times ahead, especially for the Jailbreak community.

GoodReader for iPad gets a huge update

Posted on by TiPb next top blogger.
Categories: Uncategorized.

GoodReader for iPad has just received a major update with some fantastic new features. PDF annotations is the biggest addition including notes, highlights, markups and drawings.

If you don’t already use this App for PDF viewing and management then you definitely should try it out. GoodReader is my most used iPad app, you can find out more about it in our quick review.

Full update details and more screenshots after the break.

[$0.99 on sale - iTunes link]

This is an official entry by chrisoldroyd in TiPb’s next top blogger contest. Think you have what it takes to join Team TiPb? Bring it!

Major update introducing major new feature – PDF Annotations, including notes, highlights, markups and drawings:

  • all annotations that you create or edit in GoodReader – notes, highlights, markups, and drawings >- are saved in a PDF file, so you will be able to see them later on a computer or in another copy of GoodReader on your colleague’s device
  • all notes, highlights, markups, and drawings created outside GoodReader, and properly stored in a PDF file, can be viewed or edited in GoodReader
  • types of annotations that you can create and edit in GoodReader: comments (“sticky notes”) with 7 different icons, text highlights, freehand drawings, lines, arrows, rectangles, ovals, text underlines, text deletion marks (strikeouts), text insertion marks, text replacement marks. You can freely adjust color of all of the above.
  • other types of annotations that you can view in GoodReader: text boxes with callouts, polygons and polylines, squiggly underlines, cloudy shapes, rubber stamps, file attachments. All annotations that can be viewed, can also be deleted. In addition, some of them can be edited in a limited fashion (color, placement, scale).
  • you can now extract files from PDF file attachments

  • two main gestures that you should use to work with annotations – single tap, and “tap & hold”. Depending on where you tap (on a text, on an existing annotation, or on a free space on a page), different menus will be presented to you.

Other important improvements and new features:

  • now you can select text directly on a PDF page. Tap on a text and hold your finger for a while. You can then copy it to the clipboard, or create markups for it (highlights, underlines, strikeouts, etc.)
  • certain not very large files were known to consistently crash GoodReader (as well as other PDF reader apps) for no apparent reason. This was the issue with iOS 3.x. We have resolved this issue. It shouldn’t be a problem now, even if you’re still on iOS 3.x (this one is for you, Linux Journal readers -)
  • now we can hide PDF watermarks (adjustable option in settings) -> certain button images in place of PDF links that were not shown before, are now shown correctly

And some other nice things:

  • you can now choose which minimum zoom ratio you prefer for PDF pages – “fit to screen” or “fit to width” (an option in settings)
  • we have lifted the limitation for a size of files being extracted from PDF Portfolios. Now we’re able to extract files of any size. Just make sure that you have enough of free disk space!
  • now when you copy a file to the same location as the original, a copy is created. Very handy if you want to annotate a PDF file, but also want to leave the original file unchanged.
  • a workaround for the issue when WiFi was conflicting with Bluetooth (slow WiFi connection, occasional WiFi signal drops when Bluetooth switch is on, etc.) was finally found. Now there should be no conflict between WiFi and Bluetooth when working in GoodReader.

Developers drop prices on super popular App Store apps

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

If you thought yesterday's App Store sales were nice, you haven't seen anything yet. For some reason, a whole bunch of terrific apps are dropping their prices this weekend, and Touch Arcade has put together a nice roundup. TUAW Daily App choices Osmos, Archetype, Civilization Revolution, Secret of Monkey Island (and its sequel) and Hybrid 2 are all on sale for as cheap as 99 cents, as is Telltale's Puzzle Agent, Popcap's Bookworm and Peggle, and a host of other high-profile titles. Pretty crazy -- some of the App Store's most popular titles, including EA's Need for Speed series and Activision's Call of Duty Zombies games, are seeing the biggest drops in their lifetimes.

My best guess for the big drops is that the financial year 2010 ends today, and these companies are trying to pad out their mobile app sale numbers before (or while) the quarter turns over. But whatever the reason, we consumers benefit -- if you've been waiting to pick some of these games up, now's your chance. And I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this. Companies, especially companies that have been premiering their apps as high as $9.99, are learning that dropping the price like this moves copies quickly, so as we move into the frenzied holiday season for gaming, we'll probably see more than a few big sales come down the pike. Stay tuned.
