iPhone DST bug causing alarms to fail across Europe

An iPhone bug already seen when Australia switched between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time a few weeks ago has now hit Europe. Twitter is alight with reports of recurring iPhone alarms going off an hour later than usual. So even though the iOS clock changed correctly over the weekend, the alarm is still locked to Daylight Savings Time. Thing is, according to a ZDNet Australia report from more than three weeks ago, Apple acknowledged the bug with a promise to fix it with a software update. So why wasn't it rolled out in time to avoid this mess in Europe? Let's see if Apple fixes it when North America makes the switch on November 7th.

[Thanks, David O.]

App Review: Tantrix Strategy connects luck and strategy

Posted on by Sebastian Blanco.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The beautiful Tantrix Strategy game app [US$2.99] is an example of why it's sometimes good to wait for the second or third version of an iPad app before plunking down your money in the App Store. We're reviewing Version 1.1 here, and it improves on the original with an AI opponent (three levels). This is a huge boost, and it turns a so-so app into something all strategy gamers will want to at least look at. If you just want to dive in and check it out yourself right now, there is a free "lite" version of the app available here.

For the rest of you, here's the scoop. The iPad-only Tantrix app is a tile-laying strategy game that includes a fair bit of luck. It should not be confused with Tantrix Match, a $1.99 solitaire puzzle game that uses the same pieces as Tantrix, or Connext, a $1.99 two-player game that looks similar but offers different gameplay. If you're already feeling a bit confused, that's OK. The tabletop version of Tantrix is also one set of colored tiles that can be used to play a variety of different games (think dominoes or a deck of cards). The Tantrix app offers us the basic strategy game in a refined, pretty package. Read on to see if you want to get all tantric yourself or with a friend (speaking of apps that aren't this game...)

Crush the Castle for the iPhone a strategy game

Posted on by Georgia.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Crush the Castle for iPhone is a simple and fun strategy game. The object of Crush the Castle is to destroy buildings with trebuchets — a fancy siege engine something like a catapult. You get the chance to be the attacking army and, as a twist, you can even build your own structures and destroy them as well.

The game interface is very easy to get used to. You tap the screen to launch the trebuchet and then again when you want the ammunition to be released. The you watch to see if your ammunition has hit its target. You get to pass the level when all of the occupants of the building have been killed. (Yes, this game is not for the pacifist.)

There are 10 different types of ammo that you get access to as you continue through the game. Boulders don’t cause enough destruction for you? Well in later levels you get access to cannons and greek fire (D&D flashback anyone?). There are 90 different encampments. If you get a medal on each encampment you get to progress to the next stage. Once you have unlocked a type of ammunition you can go back and try to use that weapon on previous levels, which makes it much easier to achieve a medal there.

One of the more interesting aspects of the game is that you also get access to the castle editor. This allows you to make your own buildings and then you can find out how easy they are to destroy. It is not the most seamless interface for creating new buildings but after a bit of practice you’ll get the hang of it.

This is the perfect game for the casual gamer who wants to have something to do when they have a few minutes to kill. If you enjoyed playing Angry Birds than this is a another game you will like.

Pros

  • Easy controls
  • Fun build your own fortress level
  • Simple concept

Cons

  • Build level is difficult to use
  • Can not see trebuchet and target at same time
  • No projectile trail so hits are difficult to repeat

If you want VLC for iPhone, iPad get it now before it’s pulled

VLC for iPhone

Looks like VLC for iPhone and iPad is about to be pulled from the App Store because the Open Source Powers That Be don’t believe Apple’s iTunes App Store is compatible with the GPL components of the app.

Basically, anything under the GPL has to be freely transferable to anyone without restriction. Since the App Store places FairPlay DRM even on free apps like VLC, even though anyone can still download them, that’s considered a restriction.

The long and the short of it is this — if you want VLC for iPhone or iPad, go get it now.

Patent Wars, Episode V: Apple Strikes Back

Posted on by Chris Rawson.
Categories: Uncategorized.

It is a dark time for the smartphone market. Although the Blackberry has been destroyed, patent suits have driven handset makers from their hidden laboratories and pursued them across the galaxy.

Evading the dreaded Motorola patent suits, a pair of new lawsuits led by six Apple Multi-Touch and OS patents has established a new complaint for patent infringement on the remote ice world of The Western District of Wisconsin.

Steve Jobs, obsessed with suing Android handset makers, has dispatched thousands of patents into the far reaches of the US court system....

ABC Election Night coverage with iPad app

The ABC app for the iPad has come up with a nice little update for those of you who are into tracking elections as they are happening. It’s not always easy to keep track of who is winning in each race through television or radio but now with the ABC app for iPad it will not only make tracking the election easier and more mobile, but will allow you to run through what-if scenarios for the races.

The states will change in color to represent weather it has gone Republican or Democrat, and it tracks the Senate races as well as the House of Representatives. So now you can watch whatever you want to on election night as still follow your favorite political party or candidate and see how they are doing on an important night. Best of all is that this app is free and not only can you track your election results all in one place, you can also continue to watch your favorite ABC shows as well.

Will you be utilizing this new feature in the ABC app on your iPad?

Halloween apps bring chills and thrills to iPhone and iPad

halloween apps

Happy Halloween! Apple has its own Halloween round-up on the App Store here, and I've been rocking most of the same apps I covered a couple of years ago. We've also got a few apps, costumes and interactive books on our Halloween tag page. A search in iTunes for "Halloween" will yield hundreds of apps... of varying quality.

I highly recommend Angry Birds Halloween, in both the HD and regular versions, as they deliver all the fun of Angry Birds with new levels, a spooky background and jack-o-lanterns. Doodle Jump, another addictive game, has been decked out for Halloween. A quick look at the store will show you that a good number of other games and apps have received similar treatment for the holiday.

Halloween apps fall into a few categories: games with Halloween themes, soundboards, photo apps which add masks and other costumes to photos, eBooks, and a variety of novelty apps that could be labeled toys. We won't go into many games, and I recommend using a soundboard app which allows you to record your own spooky sounds (as opposed to a once-a-year app), but if you're looking for a fun app to manipulate photos for the little spooks I think Halloween ~ Postage from RogueSheep is quite excellent.

Read on for some more iPhone and iPad app suggestions. Have your own suggestions? Leave them in the comments!

Girl pretends iPod touch is an iPhone to scare away kidnapper

Posted on by Leanna Lofte.
Categories: Uncategorized.

It turns out that the iPod touch is a kidnapper deterrent. In Stanton, Delaware, a 12-year-old girl was waiting for a ride outside Stanton Middle School when a man driving a white van pulled up next to her and yelled at her to “get in the van”. Instead of panicking, the girl pulled out her iPod touch, held it to her ear, and told the man that she was calling 9-1-1. Believing that she was using an iPhone, the driver immediately sped off. What a smart girl.

An iPod touch may have just saved this girl’s life. Now, don’t be surprised when your preteen argues that if you had his/her safety in mind, you’d buy him/her an iPod touch.

Enterprise iOS app distribution made easier by Ondeego

Posted on by Sam Abuelsamid.
Categories: Uncategorized.

For consumers, unless you jailbreak your iPhone, the only effective way to get apps onto it is via Apple's own App Store. From the beginning of the App Store, Apple has offered an alternative method of distributing apps that is meant for use by businesses to their employees. Unfortunately, that approach is cumbersome. It requires setting up servers and internal "app stores" for managing who gets those apps and pulling them back from lost or stolen phones or employees who leave.

Ondeego has expanded its AppCentral distribution system from its original Blackberry and Java mobile roots, and it now supports iPhones. AppCentral is essentially a hosted enterprise app store service that allows businesses to create an account, then easily open a private iPhone app distribution channel.

For smaller companies or those with only a few apps, this can make a lot more sense than going through the effort of setting up and maintaining their own systems. AppCentral allows managers to see and control who gets which apps and disable them remotely if needed. Only businesses in the iPhone Developer Enterprise Program can use AppCentral, because the special security certificate provided by Apple is required. The AppCentral for iPhone program is currently open for beta testers. Read on to see a video describing the service.
