Report suggests Android’s lead over iOS has stopped growing

Posted on by Kelly Hodgkins.

Android, iOS and RIM's BlackBerry OS are at a standstill in the smartphone market. Results from Nielsen's May survey show that Android is holding steady at 37% market share, iOS at 27% and BlackBerry at 22%. Even among the smaller players like Windows Phone and webOS, this stalemate situation holds true.

One thing that is going up is data usage, especially among Android users. On average, Android users download 582 MB of data per month. iOS users come in second with a 492 MB of usage and webOS is third with 448 MB per month. The bulk of this usage is app downloads followed by streaming online music and mobile radio. Wonder how these percentages will change once Apple unveils it new cloud services?

Posted on by Eric Slivka.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Apple today announced that its iWork suite of applications for the iPad has been updated to include universal binaries now capable of running on the smaller screen of the iPhone and iPod touch.
"Now you can use Keynote, Pages and Numbers on iPhone and iPod touch to create amazing presentations, documents and spreadsheets right in the palm of your hand," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The incredible Retina display, revolutionary Multi-Touch interface and our powerful software make it easy to create, edit, organize and share all of your documents from iPhone 4 or iPod touch."
The three iWork applications for iOS (Keynote, Pages, and Numbers) are available individually via the App Store and are priced at $9.99 apiece. Besides the Universal upgrade, Apple has also added a few new features to the apps:
Keynote
• Keynote Remote app (sold separately on the App Store) to control your presentation from another iPhone or iPod touch.
• New document manager to easily sort your documents and organize them into folders.

Numbers
• New document manager to easily sort your documents and organize them into folders.
• Improved usability including Smart Zoom for viewing and editing data.

Pages
• New document manager to easily sort your documents and organize them into folders.
• Ability to change font style and size directly from the ruler when editing text.
• Smart Zoom for viewing and editing data.
Several hints nearly a year ago had indicated that Apple was working on a version of iWork for the smaller screen, but any rumors of a launch have been scant since that time.

Apple today announced that Steve Jobs will indeed host the keynote for the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next Monday in San Francisco. Aside from the expected focus on iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion, Apple's announcement also confirms that Jobs will introduce the company's "iCloud" service.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS X; iOS 5, the next version of Apples advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch; and iCloud, Apple's upcoming cloud services offering.
Apple last month was reported to have purchased the iCloud.com domain name, with additional reports claiming that Apple has indeed been referring to its streaming service by that name. Apple has been said to be close to wrapping up negotiations with major music labels and publishers to allow users to stream their owned music from Apple's cloud-based servers to any of a number of Internet-connected devices.

TUAW’s Daily iPhone App: Duke Nukem Forever Soundboard

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Bad news if you got your hopes up about that Duke Nukem on iOS rumor a little while back. The game is indeed spreading to our platform of choice, but not in the form you wanted. Instead of a port or a separate game title, we've got a free soundboard app designed to kick up a little excitement for the release of (finally!) Duke Nukem Forever.

There are over 25 included audio catchphrases from Duke himself, featuring tamely offensive gems like "Anybody mind if I take off my pants?" and "I've got balls of steel." If you're a Duke Nukem fan, this kind of humor probably appeals to you more than others, and the low price of free should make it easy to pick up.

Still, it's too bad we didn't get a real port of Duke Nukem Forever for iOS. The game's gone gold master, but maybe there's still a chance we'll see an actual game (or related tie-in) for this big title coming later this year.

How do you check the weather or your iPhone or iPad?

How do you check the weather on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad? On the iPhone and iPod touch you have the built in, Yahoo! powered Weather app and while it’s relatively simple and quick it doesn’t provide a lot of information. The iPad doesn’t even come with a built in weather app, so finding something you like in the App Store or bookmarking a website are your only options.

If you use an App Store app or website, which one(s) do you use? Do you prefer quick, current, high level info or do you like all the bells and whistles, like radar, hour-by-hour forecasts, and lots of indexes? Do you want a lot of animation or eye candy, or just the facts?

How do you like your weather?

Google shutting down Translate API

Google shutting down Translate API

Google has announced they’ll be limiting and eventually shutting down the Google Translate API, meaning any iPhone or iPad apps that rely on the service for free translation functionality aren’t going to be able to reply on it any longer.

The Google Translate API has been officially deprecated as of May 26, 2011. Due to the substantial economic burden caused by extensive abuse, the number of requests you may make per day will be limited and the API will be shut off completely on December 1, 2011.

Google Translate is a great, free-as-in-Google web-based language translation service that can tell you what a seal is in French or what ferme means in English. The API let developers use that free service in other web apps, or in native apps like those in iOS. Which is what Marco Armant guesses just might have been the problem.

I wonder how Google felt about all of these iPhones hitting their free translator constantly. Seems like the kind of service that they might want to be exclusive to Android. Maybe iPhone apps are the “abuse” they’re talking about.

Microsoft’s Bing still offers a free translation API, so developers have an alternative, for now at least. It’s another example, however, of how risky it can be to base your app on the goodwill and free offerings of a big internet company like Google, Twitter, or Facebook.

Bronze makes your music collection sound downright lazy

Posted on by Brian Heater.
Categories: Uncategorized.
No matter how large your record collection is, there'll always be days when you're sick and tired of everything you own. There are some pretty easy fixes to this, of course -- streaming music services, internet radio, and even the old fashioned terrestrial variety, but none attack the problem quite as directly as Bronze. The app was co-created by Golden Silvers' front man, Gwilym Gold, in part as a clever way to promote his new track, "Flesh Freeze," a hushed, Robert Wyatt-esque number, which just so happens to be the only song that it's compatible with at present. Bronze combats musical stagnation by altering the music itself, assuring that no two listens of a song are ever quite the same, running an algorithm that jumbles the sequence and presence of elements including the instruments and vocals. The changes are generally fairly subtle from play to play, taking a few listens to really pick up on what's unfolding. At present, it's available as a download for the Mac, with Windows and mobile versions to follow. It's free for now, but that, like the song, should change soon enough.

MacBook Air Supplies Constrained Ahead of Refresh?

Posted on May 30, 2011 by Arnold Kim.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Both CNet and Digitimes have pinpointed the 2011 Macbook Air refreshes for the June-July timeframe. So, it should be no surprise that according to retail sources of 9to5mac, Apple's MacBook Air supplies are becoming constrained around the world.

The 2011 MacBook Air is believed to adopt the latest Sandy Bridge processors which come with Intel's embedded graphics chipset. While the Sandy Bridge processor is notably faster than the current MacBook Air's Core 2 Duo, the video hardware way be a step down. This is a compromise that Apple has already chosen for the latest low-end MacBook Pros, so we expect they will make the same decision in the new MacBook Airs. The new Airs should also adopt the Thunderbolt high speed connector that was introduced earlier this year.

Daily Tip: How to manage your app notifications

How to manage your app notifications

Not getting alerted to a new Facebook message or Twitter DM on your iPhone or iPad and wish you were, or getting too many alerts and wishing you knew how to turn them off? Worry not, Apple has built in a system to manage your App Store app notifications and we’ll show you how to turn them on or off, and choose just which kinds of alerts — sound, popup or badge — you want for each one… after the break!

App Store apps can send both push notifications over the internet (so you know when you get a new IM or game challenge) and local notifications on the device so you know when a task is due or a timer goes off. Unfortunately, iOS still handles these in a singular, interruptive way. Hopefully iOS 5 will fix that, but until then Settings will be your best friend.

Notification notification

The first time you launch an app that uses notifications, Apple makes them ask your permission to send them. (See the picture up top.) You can choose to allow it not allow it. But don’t worry if you have second thoughs, or if you make a mistake. It’s easy to change.

How to turn off all app notifications

  1. Launch the Settings app
  2. Tap on Notifications
  3. Toggle the slider on or off, as you so choose

You can even just say no and turn them all off like Rene.

How to selectively enable/disable app notifications

  1. Instead of toggling the general on/off slider, scroll down to the app you want to adjust and tap it
  2. Toggle the sliders of Sounds, Alerts, and Badges as you wish.

If you toggle them all off, that app will no longer send you notifications. If you don’t mind badges but find sounds or alerts annoying, mix and match to your liking.

Note: Some apps also have push notification settings inside the app as well to give you more granular control of what types of notifications get sent. We’ll do a tip on that in the future.

Have any other tips for handling notifications? Let us know in the comments!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. Intel Outlines ‘Ivy Bridge’ Roadmap as 1st Half 2012, and Previews ‘Ultrabook’ Laptop Designs

Posted on by Arnold Kim.
Categories: Uncategorized.

At Computex, Intel updated the press about its roadmap for power efficient processors in the coming years. Engadget reprints the press release in which Intel predicts that a new class of laptops called "Ultrabooks" could make up 40% of the consumer latop market by the end of 2012.
These computers will marry the performance and capabilities of today's laptops with tablet-like features and deliver a highly responsive and secure experience, in a thin, light and elegant design.
Intel describes this family of notebooks as "thin, light and beautiful designs that are less than 20mm (0.8 inch) thick, and mainstream price points under US $1,000." These "ultrabooks" already sound very similar to Apple's MacBook Air which we've already heard is evolving into a mainstream product.

MacBook Air
Intel describes the ultimate evolution to these ultra-thin laptops in a 3 step process. The first systems based on their current designs should be available this winter. Meanwhile, they plan on continuing to push processor power designs in the coming years to enable even more efficient designs.

The second step will be based on Intel's Ivy Bridge processor designs which were announced in May:
Laptops based on "Ivy Bridge" will bring improved power efficiency, smart visual performance, increased responsiveness and enhanced security. "Ivy Bridge" is the first high-volume chip based on Intel's 22 nanometer (nm) manufacturing technology that uses a revolutionary 3-D transistor design called Tri-Gate announced in May.
Finally, for the 3rd step, in 2013 processors codenamed "Haswell" will reduce the microprocessor power to half of today's chips. Intel has been previously reported to be working aggressively on reducing power consumption on their processors.

Apple has a good relationship with Intel and will certainly benefit from these new processor designs. So, we should also see the first Macs based on the Ivy Bridge processors in the first half of 2012. The most recently leaked slides suggest a March-April timeframe for the chip release.
