Daily Tip: How to manage iTunes in the Cloud on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Posted on January 4, 2012 by Chris Oldroyd.
Categories: Uncategorized.

If you are a user of iTunes in the Cloud and only keep part of your music collection on your iOS device and all of your collection in iCloud, you may want to retrieve some extra music from iCloud or even delete some music on your device. It is all very simple to do, keep on reading and we will show you how.

How to Download Music from iCloud

  • Open up your Music app
  • You will see the complete list of music that is available in iCloud. If the track or album shows a cloud icon next to it, this means it is not on your device but is on iCloud
  • To download the music from iCloud, select one of the tracks or albums with the iCloud icon
  • You will now see the tracks with individual iCloud download labels, clicking on one will download just that track to your device
  • If you want to download a whole album, scroll down and you will see a Download All button. Click on that and all the tracks will download to your device
  • When it’s finished downloading, you will see that track or album no longer has the cloud icon as it is now on your device and it can be played instantly

How to delete music from device and leave it on iCloud

  • Open up your Music app
  • You will see the complete list of music that is available in iCloud. If the track or album shows a cloud icon next to it, this means it is not on your device but is on iCloud
  • If it doesn’t have a cloud icon, it means the track is stored on your device
  • To remove the track or album from your device and leave it in iCloud simply swipe right to left along the album or track
  • A delete box will appear, click on it and you will see the cloud icon immediatey appear next to the track or album
  • This means the album is no longer stored on your device but is available to download again from iCloud.
That is all there is to it, a very easy way to manage your music on your iOS device using iCloud.

Verizon sold 4.2 million iPhones last quarter

Verizon blew through 4.2 million sales of the iPhone last quarter

Bloomberg reports that Verizon Wireless sold 4.2 million iPhone units during the last quarter.

The demand suggests Verizon Wireless is winning an increasing share of new iPhone users, after gaining rights to offer the handset to its subscribers last year. In the third quarter, Verizon added 2 million customers for the device, trailing the 2.7 million iPhone activations at AT&T Inc. (T), which has offered the handset since 2007.

This will no doubt reflect well on Apple’s next quarterly earnings call, scheduled for January 24th, which is also expected to be Apple’s highest quarter in terms of revenue.

Apple brings in former Adobe VP to help out iAd

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

Apple's iAd service hasn't been as successful as the company hoped. While Apple has been able to keep iAd "premium" by keeping up ad costs and only bringing in high profile clients interested in putting out high quality advertisements, it hasn't actually made much money with the service, either for itself or developers who are trying run the ads.

Hopefully that will change now that Apple is bringing in a former Adobe VP named Todd Teresi to reinvigorate the iAd service and turn it back into the premiere ad and money generator that Steve Jobs hoped it would be. Teresi formely oversaw Adobe's media solutions division, and he may either tweak the system so it's a little more appetizing for advertisers or bring more and bigger accounts on board so these ads can be served to developers.

As for the developers we've talked to, they're more than happy to keep serving iAds as long as they can also serve ads from other services. Competing ad services may not pay as much to developers, but at least they pay something -- many iAds never get shown simply because advertisers aren't willing to pay for them. Hopefully Teresi can fix that and get iAd back up to where Jobs originally wanted it to be.

6.5 million downloads for Angry Birds on Christmas Day

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Rovio says that it saw a whopping 6.5 million downloads of Angry Birds this past Christmas Day, which is just phenomenal, even for this overwhelmingly popular game. That number is very close to the number of iOS and Android devices activated overall, which means that most people who got an iPhone or other mobile device that runs Angry Birds over the holiday ran to download the game as quickly as they could.

I've heard this before. One of the creators of Doodle Jump told me a while ago that whenever Apple released a new device, that app saw jumps of approximately the same numbers in downloads. Angry Birds is obviously quite a phenomenon, and it's so synonymous with the mobile experience that apparently the only limit on it out there is simply how many mobile devices manufacturers can sell.

Rovio also says there's more coming in 2012. We'd hope for Rovio to get back to actually making mobile games not about Angry Birds (the company made more than 30 before Angry Birds hit), but given its popularity, we'll probably still see these frustrated avians even more in the future.

Is the Samsung Ace a blatant copy of the iPhone 3G/3GS?

Posted on by Allyson Kazmucha.

The Samsung Ace, a new entry level Android phone, looks an awful lot like the iPhone 3G/3GS. Samsung has a history of copying Apple’s design so this really shouldn’t come as any surprise to anyone not living under a rock.

I really don’t have much to say about this except Samsung really needs to put more money into their research and development budget. Oh wait, they probably can’t since it’s all tied up with legal fees for all the other Apple devices they’ve copied, and been sued over.

Osmos tips to help push you along

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

We've seen a couple rounds of Infinity Blade tips so far, but what if your iOS gaming tastes run a little bit less combative and a little bit more trajectory-based? Here are some excellent tips for the physics-based puzzle game Osmos, hosted by the game's music composers. The core mechanic of Osmos is that you control a globe of mass, and you can trade that globe's mass for movement, by kicking a stream of mass out in a various direction, trying to reach and "eat" other globes on the screen to get more mass. Controlling the game is simple, but winning it is another thing entirely. Fortunately, these tips should help.

And they also go a long way to showing just how complex and well constructed Osmos is. You can not only use your mass to propel your planet forward, but you can also propel other planets away from you, and even push those into other planets, causing a domino effect to your own advantage. And using walls is another big one. They can affect your movement strongly without costing you anything, which make the edges of the screen very valuable.

All good stuff. If you haven't played Osmos yet, you definitely should: It's available on the App Store right now, for iPhone or iPad.

Apple Issues Refunds for “Premature” Purchases of GameStore App

Posted on by Jordan Golson.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Earlier this week, an app called GameStore was accidentally made available for purchase on the App Store. The app, which appeared to be a test or development app of some sort, offered several racing-themed in-app purchases but without any actual functionality. The app was quickly removed from the store, and now Apple is issuing refunds to users who purchased the app.

We received this email from iTunes Support, claiming that the GameStore app was "made available for sale prematurely."
From: iTunes Store Support
Subject: Your purchase of the GameStore app
Date: January 4, 2012 5:29:49 PM MST
To: tips@macrumors.com

Dear Arnold,

You recently purchase the GameStore app. The app was made available for sale prematurely. We apologize for the problem and have refunded the purchase amount back to your account. These funds will be applied to your original payment method within 5 business days.

Apple refunding purchases of “prematurely” released GameStore app

Apple refunding purchases of "prematurely" released GameStore app

Apple is sending out refund notices to iPhone users who purchased GameStore, the bizarre Apple app that briefly appeared in the App Store over the weekend.

You recently purchase the GameStore app. The app was made available for sale prematurely. We apologize for the problem and have refunded the purchase amount back to your account. These funds will be applied to your original payment method within 5 business days.

While GameStore showed a release date of Dec. 31, 2011 in iTunes deskstop, the on-device App Store showed a date of June 9, 2009, which suggested it might have been a beta app used to test the iOS 3 in-app purchases feature.

The refund language, however, clearly says “premature”, which would suggest it will be properly released at a later date.

Whether or not that’s accurate, whether or not a new app with the same name but more current functionality, or whether there’s a different explanation remains unknown.

Rumor: 50-inch Apple television already in Jonathan Ive’s design lab

Apple working on 50-inch Apple Television in Jonathan Ive's design lab

USA Today, based on sources who have previously worked at Apple, is contributing some more information to the increasingly large Apple Television rumor pile.

Apple is said to be looking at a 42-inch or larger LCD TV with built-in Wi-Fi. Inside the locked-down studio of Jonathan Ive, senior vice president of industrial design at Apple, there’s a slick 50-inch TV, according to the source who worked at Apple.

Previous speculation out of China suggested a 32 or 37-inch television withSiri controls.

Although this report mentions that talks with media executives have stalled, it’s apparent that a 42 or even 50-inch model vs a smaller display would likely help Apple get a better foothold during their primary push into this new and already-crowded product segment. And with CES just around the corner, rumors of Apple making a television are only going to get more frequent.

Apple hires Adobe exec Todd Teresi to oversee iAd program

Apple hires Adobe exec Todd Teresi to oversee iAd program

Adam Satariano from Bloomberg tweeted that Apple has hired away Todd Teresi from Adobe to lead their iAd program.

Apple has hired Adobe’s Todd Teresi to head iAd. Story coming….

Bloomberg hasn’t released any details just yet, but this move could likely be seen as a competitive jab by Adobe. Teresi acted as VP of Adobe’s Media Solutions division, and hiring him away from Adobe could be interpreted as another shot across their bow which, ultimately, lead to Adobe conceding and abandoning Flash for mobile devices.

On the other hand, iAd hasn’t necessarily gained the traction Apple had hoped for, and the recent loss of Andy Miller probably didn’t help much either. This could just be Apple trying to pivot in an attempt to help bolster the fumbled initiative.

iPad App Store passes three billion app downloads

iPad App Store passes three billion app downloads

ABI Research has a new study showing the iPad App Store has hit three billion downloads since it debuted in 2010.

The iPhone took as long as two years before being able to achieve this level of downloads, while the iPad made it within nearly a year and a half.

This represents roughly 19 percent of all iOS App Store downloads combined, which is a significant slice of the pie in terms of Apple’s mobile ecosystem.

In comparison, Android tablets only have around 440 million app downloads thus far, or just a little under one sixth of the amount from Apple’s fledgling — but wildly successful — tablet device.

Verizon iPhone Sales More Than Double to 4.2 Million in Holiday Quarter

Posted on by Eric Slivka.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Verizon Wireless Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo today participated in Citi's Global Entertainment, Media & Communications Conference, and as part of his presentation revealed some iPhone sales numbers for the carrier. As noted by StreetInsider.com, Shammo announced that Verizon sold 4.2 million iPhones during the fourth quarter of 2011, a quarter which saw the launch of the iPhone 4S.

That performance more than doubled the previous quarter's sales of 2.0 million iPhones. Overall, Apple sold just over 17 million iPhones during that third calendar quarter, and while it is difficult to extrapolate Apple's total fourth quarter sales from the performance of a single U.S. carrier, the 4.2 million number could at least put Apple in the range of 35 million iPhones for the quarter across all carriers and markets. Apple today announced that it will report its holiday quarter sales and earnings numbers on January 24.

As a result of the strong performance of the iPhone 4S, Verizon is projecting a reduction in its profit margin as it absorbs the upfront subsidies paid to Apple for the device. Those subsidies will, however, be recouped over time from subscribers' service contracts.

SugarSync updates Android and iOS apps, brings auto sync technology to videos

If you're jonesing to get your photos and movies from your smartphone back to the home computer without futzing around with cables, the folks at SugarSync have a new spoonful of sweetness for Android and iOS devices -- and with its free price, it should be easy to swallow. In the latest version, the company has applied its AutoSync technology to videos, which means that all media files can now be synced to the cloud and pushed to linked computers without user intervention. As this could involve a significant amount of data, AutoSync Videos works only over WiFi, and users may select from three compression qualities based on their desire for picture quality or upload speed. The latest SugarSync apps also feature a redesigned photos tab, which lets users view all their pictures -- not just the recent ones -- and offers quicker navigation along with larger, high-res previews. The company gives all users 5GB of storage absolutely gratis, so if you have a lot of media to unload, it may be worthwhile to hop aboard. You'll find the complete PR announcements just after the break.

Apple Hires Adobe Executive Todd Teresi to Run iAd Program

Bloomberg's Adam Satariano reports that Apple has hired Adobe executive Todd Teresi to head up its iAd mobile advertising unit. Additional information on the hire will be forthcoming.
Apple has hired Adobe's Todd Teresi to head iAd. Story coming....
Teresi has served as VP of Adobe's Media Solutions division for the past nine months, having previously held positions with Quantcast, Yahoo, and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

iAd, which has reportedly struggled to gain momentum due to high pricing and Apple's demands for substantial creative control, was launched in July 2010 following Apple's acquisition of mobile advertising firm Quattro Wireless earlier in the year.

The iAd division was led by former Quattro founder and CEO Andy Miller, who then left Apple in September 2011 to take a venture capital position. iAd has since been overseen by Eddy Cue, who is also responsible for the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and iCloud.

Voice integration for the iPhone? Spotify's working on it. The streaming service's CEO Daniel Ek showed off a little "hack" his company has been working on, while proclaiming his passion for the 4S's sassy assistant Siri, telling his handset to serve up some Coldplay. The phone, naturally, obliged. No word yet on whether such a feature might work for groups not directly tied to Gwyneth Paltrow.
