iPad survives fall from the edge of space thanks to its G-Form case

An iPad has survived a massive 100,000 foot fall in the latest publicity stunt for case manufacturer G-Form. The iPad was solely clad in a G-Form 6oz Extreme Edge case and taken into space on a weather balloon.

The company released a stunning hi-def video Thursday where the nearly naked iPad is shown hanging above the Earth in the blackness of space. In the video, the iPad is lifted to over 100,000 feet by a weather balloon which bursts at altitude, then releasing the iPad to free-fall to Earth where it crash lands on a rocky hillside in the Nevada countryside. Perhaps even more remarkable than the dramatic hi-def footage itself is the fact that the iPad survives the adventure, remaining fully functional.

The video is really impressive on its own, without taking into account the magnitude of the fall or the fact that it is an iPad. It’s not something I would be willing to try with my iPad 2 but it is definitely a great way to show some faith in your cases!

iHome is working on bringing three new iPhone docks to its already large portfolio of accessories. The new docks are set to be revealed at CES 2012 which starts next week. Three models will be introduced in total; one will even include AirPlay.

  • iW4 AirPlay Wireless 20 Watts Bedside Speaker System for iPad/iPhone/iPod: making its alarm clock speaker system debut, AirPlay utilizes the home WiFi network to deliver more flexibility than ever before. Easily stream your entire iTunes library over the network to listen, sleep or wake to your favorite tunes. The iW4 is expected to retail for $269.99.
  • iP18 LED Color Changing Dual Alarm Clock Speaker System for iPhone and iPod: a little bit of color goes a long way with this ultra-modern and stylish alarm clock speaker solution. Now with a smaller footprint and new cube design, this app-friendly Glowtunes offering has big features including four color-changing modes, Reson8 speaker chamber technology, one-touch clock sync and more. The iP18 is expected to retail for $69.99.
  • iD50 App-Enhanced Bluetooth Alarm Clock Radio Speakerphone for iPad/iPhone/iPod with AM/FM Presets: the alarm clock you’d expect to see on James Bond’s nightstand, but with a price tag that makes it realistic for non secret agents to own. The iD50 is strong in the features department and has a smooth finish that will stir you to wake rather than shake you. The iD50 is expected to retail for $169.99.

The bad news is that these new docks will not be available to buy until later in the year. That’s as good as it gets on the release information for now. We will let you know as soon as we find out anymore.

Instagram now shares photos to your Facebook albums

Posted on by Leanna Lofte.

Instagram has made a change that shares your photos to your Facebook albums instead of just sticking a link on your wall. Now when you select Facebook as an option when uploading a photo to Instagram, the image will be uploaded full-sized into a Facebook album named “Instagram Photos”, along with your caption. As a result, your Instagram photos will appear nice and large on your timeline and it will be easy for your friends to browse past Instagram photos.

Previously, only the instagr.am link was shared to your wall and your friends needed to visit that link in order to view your photo. Additionally, you couldn’t tag people in the photos and ‘likes’ and comments were technically made to the shared link, not the photo.

I was very excited when I noticed this change as I have been wanting Instagram to work like this for a very long time. I believe my Instagram photos will now receive more comments and ‘likes’ and I’m glad I’ll be able to click through my friends’ Instagram albums, since I know I miss many of their shared photos.

This change is only for photos uploaded to Instagram from now on. If you want to add previous photos to your Facebook album, you’ll need to share it again from within the Instagram app.

TidyTilt is a Smart Cover, kickstand, mount and earbud wrap for your iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S

TidyTilt is a new Kickstarter project with a multi-functioning, innovative case/cover that aims to keep your iPhone earbuds in check.

TidyTilt is an earbud cord wrap, multi-position kickstand, and mount for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. TidyTilt takes up less space than any one of these devices – yet does all three things – without adding something extra to carry.

With TidyTilt, you can wrap your earbud cords the same way you normally do, while also keeping everything nicely organized and always within reach. The case takes cues from Apple’s own Smart Cover for the iPad 2, only instead of on the front, it protects the rear glass of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

You can even apply it to existing cases you already use, then turn around and mount it to a magnetic strip if you’re so inclined.

Their goal has already been met and exceeded at nearly $37,000 from a $10,000 initial funding requirement, and you can have your very own by pledging as little as $19.

Rumor: Next iPad to come with HD FaceTime, Retina display, 8MP rear camera, iPad 2 drops to $399

Jeremy Horwitz from iLounge has posted rumors about the iPad 3 and what his sources say we should expect.

Some of the included were upgraded front and rear cameras with HD FaceTime on the front and an 8MP sensor on the rear. His sources believe the rear camera may in fact be the same as the iPhone 4S.

Horwitz, who has had good information in the past, also dispels rumors of the next iPad hitting in January or February, and instead suggested it will follow the same March/April release cycle the iPad has been on since it debuted in 2010, and that the iPad 2 will stick around at an entry-level price of $399.

Infinity Blade franchise pulls in $30 million in 2011

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Angry Birds isn't the only iOS brand that did well over the holiday season: Chair Entertainment reports that Infinity Blade also raked in the money this past holiday season (and the year previous). The franchise as a whole has picked up a whopping $30 million so far. That includes both the original Infinity Blade game and the great Infinity Blade 2, but it also includes a digital novel based in the game's setting, an original soundtrack release, and even Infinity Blade FX, which is an arcade version of the touchscreen game at places like Dave and Buster's.

That's a solid franchise, and a solid chunk of money the company has picked up so far. More important than the total, however, is what all of this money means: That you can build a successful and solid high-definition franchise on iOS. Lots of traditional and mainstream companies (like Chair, and Epic, which owns them) have been looking at iOS as a platform, and many of them have dismissed it as a smaller environment for more casual or low-profile games. That may be true (Infinity Blade could be called more casual than, say, Chair's own Shadow Complex on the Xbox 360), but Chair's also proven here that iOS gamers do want (and are willing to pay for) more in-depth, well-produced titles also. There's no question that we'll see more next-gen studios dipping their production toes in iOS in the future as well, going after exactly this kind of money.

EPIC GAMES AND CHAIR ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE EARNINGS FROM INFINITY BLADE FRANCHISE EXCEED $30 MILLION

Accolades, Strong Sales of Infinity Blade II Further Propel Blockbuster Game Franchise

CARY, N.C. and SALT LAKE CITY (January 5, 2012) - Epic Games, Inc. and its award-winning Salt Lake City-based development studio, ChAIR Entertainment, today announced that earnings from ChAIR's blockbuster Infinity Blade video game franchise have eclipsed $30 million in just one year since the introduction of the original game. One of the most popular gaming franchises to be launched on the App Store, the award-winning series has also created significant licensing interest in the underlying Unreal Engine 3 technology from developers worldwide.

Further fueling franchise momentum is the recent release of Infinity Blade II, which has seen net earnings in excess of $5 million in just one month since release on Dec. 1, 2011, a mark which took the original title three months to achieve. Infinity Blade II is on pace to exceed the record success of the original Infinity Blade game, which has grossed more than $23 million to date. Additional franchise extensions include Infinity Blade: Awakening, a digital novella from best-selling author Brandon Sanderson, Infinity Blade: Original Soundtrack, which features original music from the games, and Infinity Blade FX, a big screen, coin-op version of Infinity Blade now featured in arcades nationwide.

Infinity Blade II was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2011 and received dozens of accolades, including several perfect scores and Editors Choice awards. IGN scored the game a "Perfect 10" and named it their 2011 Mobile Game of the Year. USA Today awarded Infinity Blade II another perfect score, calling it "A Masterful Mobile Epic." Infinity Blade II was crowned Game of the Year by Slide to Play and Touch Gen, and named Mobile Game of the Year by GameSpot and G4TV, among others. Infinity Blade II was also named among E! Online's 'Top 10 Games of 2011,' one of the 'Best Apps of 2011' by Entertainment Weekly, and was cited by Mashable in its '5 Major Trends that Changed Digital Entertainment in 2011' feature.

"The success of the Infinity Blade franchise is testament to our talented team who is devoted to making games we want to play, all while using Unreal Engine technology to redefine what is expected from games on iOS devices," Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps said. "We have so much more in store for players, and will continue to make great content for Apple's evolving platforms."

Infinity Blade II is available for download from the App Store (www.itunes.com/appstore) for $6.99 and is a universal app. The game is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2, iPod touch 3 (16GB+) and iPod touch 4.

Arieso study: iPhone 4S data use is nearly double that of the of iPhone 4

Posted on by Darren Murph.
Categories: Uncategorized.
So, first things first. Arieso, the ouftit that conducted this here study, is a company that makes ends meet by "optimizing mobile networks." In other words, there's just a bit of motivation to find results such as these in studies like this. Now that we've got that cleared up, you may be interested in knowing that Apple's iPhone 4S users are consuming around "twice as much data as the previous iPhone model, and even more than iPad tablets due to increasing use of online services like the virtual personal assistant Siri."

Of course, this relates only to those sampled, but there's no question that the inclusion of Siri gives users one more reason to tap into their data plan. According to prior studies, the iPhone 4 used only 1.6x more data than the iPhone 3G, while the iPad 2 consumed 2.5x more data than the iPhone 3G. As time marches on, more and more websites are tailoring themselves for mobile use, and there's obviously no stopping the proliferation of data-sucking apps. Whatever the case, we'd just encourage you to mind that data tier (if you're in one) -- wouldn't want to have to ask Siri how to raise money to cover overages, no would you?

Sprint CEO: We throttle top 1 percent of data users

We throttle top 1 percent of data users

Hot off the Dow Jones Newsire comes a report that, according to their CEO Dan Hesse, Sprint is throttling the top 1 percent of data users, including their new iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S subscribers.

“For those that want to abuse it, we can knock them off,” Hesse said at an investor conference Thursday. He said Sprint pares back data use for about 1% of users, a practice known as throttling.

Sprint was initially gung-ho about offering unlimited data to iPhone subscribers, so what’s the deal? If they’re throttling data users, then their “Truly Unlimited” network isn’t actually unlimited at all. It sounds as if Sprint may be falling in line with all the other major U.S. carriers — or at least publicly taking steps to get there.

Anyone care to take a guess at how long it’ll be before Sprint rids their “unlimited” data plans altogether?

iPhone 5 concept designs start up again

Posted on by Allyson Kazmucha.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Now that iPhone 4S has come and launched, iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling the next generation iPhone), concept designs are once again starting to pop up. This one comes from designer Antonio De Rosa, who created the above iPhone concept and has given it the title of iPhone SJ, as it is Steve Jobs inspired. He imagines it having an A6 processor, a 10 MP camera, and a polycarbonate body. I don’t particularly feel that an A6 processor or a better camera are out of the question for the next iPhone.

I don’t think polycarbonate would be a bad choice for the body as it’s extremely lightweight. It would allow Apple to create an even larger device and subtract weight. I’m not sure I would want a larger screen as that has its disadvantages too. Overall, I think the design is great but I’m not sold on Apple making a larger screen that would inhibit one-handed use. You can visit ADR Studio’s site for more images of his design.

Swann’s new RC camera-choppers make stalking easy and fun

Swann's releasing three new iDevice controlled helicopters for all the personal espionage / office hijinks you can cope with. The $70 iFly Micro Lightning will annoy colleagues on your floor while the similarly priced Sky Eye includes a camera that will shoot stills and video to its 512MB onboard memory before uploading the results to YouTube or Facebook. For the serious stalker / commercial spy, the Black Swann includes expandable microSD storage (yup, up to 32GB). The latter two devices have a range of 110 feet and all three will fly for eight minutes on a single charge. You'll be able to pick 'em up from Fry's and other good retailers soon, just try to remember not to get fired or arrested for treason, okay?

The Dark Knight Rises trailer breaks iTunes download record

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The second trailer for the upcoming Dark Knight Rises (which I'm really looking forward to, as both a huge Batman fan and a big fan of Christopher Nolan's work) has broken records on Apple's iTunes movie download site, boasting a full 12.5 million downloads in just 24 hours, topping the previous record by 2 million. That's a pretty solid debut for the "exclusive" trailer (exclusive, in this case, meaning it's popped up on other video sites after its debut).

That previous record was held by none other than Marvel's The Avengers preview, which came out earlier this year. Obviously downloads like these don't make any money for Apple -- they instead cost a lot more money, both in bandwidth and in things like technical support and oversight. But of course releasing free trailers like this promotes both the movie and the iTunes download service -- that's 12.5 million people who, when they want to go and download or rent a full movie, know where iTunes is and how it works. From Apple's point of view, that kind of promotion is well worth it.

Italian court denies initial iPhone 4S ban

Posted on by Chris Rawson.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Samsung has lost another battle in its ongoing patent war with Apple. Its request to have iPhone 4S sales banned in Italy has been denied by the Italian courts. This comes barely a month after France similarly denied Samsung's request for a sales injunction against the iPhone 4S.

Samsung had already tried and failed to block the iPhone 4S release in Italy back in October, so this latest smackdown from the Italian courts comes as little surprise. Thus far Samsung has had no success in its pursuit of sales injunctions against Apple's handset, while Apple scored a temporary victory in Australia by getting sales of the Galaxy Tab banned there for most of 2011.

The ongoing patent dispute between the two companies comes as a result of Apple's accusation that Samsung has blatantly copied the designs of several Apple products, including several models of iPhones and the iPad. The patent wars haven't deterred Samsung from, um, paying homage to Apple's designs, either; as Macgasm points out, the newly-released Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus is a carbon copy clone of the iPhone 3G's design.

Sprint Throttles Top 1% of Data Users, No “Truly Unlimited” Data For US iPhone Users

Posted on by Jordan Golson.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Though Sprint, the United States' newest iPhone carrier, has been running advertisements touting its "truly unlimited" network, the carrier is throttling smartphone customers who use "excessive" amounts of data, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
For those that want to abuse it, we can knock them off," [Sprint CEO Dan] Hesse said at an investor conference Thursday. He said Sprint pares back data use for about 1% of users, a practice known as throttling.

[...]

"You'd be shocked how much data you use in a month," Sprint asks in a recent television advertisement. "What happens if you go over? With Sprint, you don't have to worry; only Sprint offers truly unlimited data."

Hesse did say there were no plans for Sprint to move to tiered data plans like Verizon and AT&T have switched to in recent years, however it appears that there is no longer any US carrier that offers "truly unlimited" data plans for the iPhone.

iPad 3 to Gain Improved Cameras? iPad 2 to Carry On at Lower Price?

Posted on by Eric Slivka.
Categories: Uncategorized.
iLounge offers a new series of notes sharing information from a source about Apple's plans for the iPad 3. Among the most interesting notes is the claim that the next-generation iPad will carry significantly improved cameras on the front and back, moving to a FaceTime HD camera on the front and a higher-resolution iPhone-like camera on the rear.

The source also reiterates iLounge's earlier claim that the next-generation iPad will be slightly thicker than the iPad 2 while retaining the same general form factor.
1) A few next-gen iPad notes, ahead of the show. Both cameras are getting upgrades. Front goes HD, rear becomes iPhone 4/4S-like (bigger).

2) Body of the next iPad is, as we previously reported, getting just a little thicker to accommodate new parts - little = 1mm give or take.

3) Curve radiuses on the body will change only a little to accommodate the added thickness, not dramatically. Think iPad 2 Pro, not a redesign.
iLounge's source also follows some other current lines of thinking in reporting that Apple will continue to offer the iPad 2 alongside the iPad 3, dropping the price of the current model in order to tackle increasing competition from lower-priced competitors such as Amazon's Kindle Fire. Horwitz offers a $399 base price for the iPad 2 as a possibility, although that number appears to be pure speculation.

Finally, the iPad 3 is said to be in line for another March release, similar to that seen with the iPad 2 last year.

Apple pays $5 million to settle Elan lawsuit

Posted on by Dave Caolo.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Apple has reportedly opted to settle a patent dipute with Elan to the tune of US$5 million. The settlement allows the company to avoid a trial and possible ban of Apple products. Elan's complaint was over two multi-touch patents.

Early last year, an International Trade Commission judge decided in Elan's favor when Elan brought a complaint that Apple had used its multi-touch patents in the iPhone. At the time, it was estimated that Apple could pay as much as $70 million in the case. With that bargaining chip off the table for Elan, it received significantly less this week.

Apple did counter-sue Elan, but this settlement has brought that to an end, too.

Apple refunds purchases for ‘prematurely released’ GameStore app

Posted on by Donald Melanson.
Categories: Uncategorized.
As those who follow such comings and goings closely may have noticed, a rather mysterious "GameStore" app seemingly made by Apple itself recently appeared in the App Store. It didn't provide much in the way of functionality for its $0.99 price tag -- displaying only a few in-app purchases that couldn't actually be purchased -- and now Apple has offered an explanation, of sorts, for the app's existence. In a message to folks who bought the app, Apple said that the app (since pulled from the App Store) was "prematurely released," and that it has refunded all purchases. Of course, that raises the question as to whether it will eventually be released officially, but Apple expectedly isn't getting any more specific at this point.
