App Giveaway: Run Roo Run HD for iPad

Posted on by Leanna Lofte.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Run Roo Run HD is a platformer game where you, a kangaroo, must avoid obstacles by jumping, swinging, riding clouds, and launching from cannons. Each level is a single screen, not scrolling.

This is a great little game, but the main levels are not very challenging. It took me less than an hour to complete the main levels in all 20 chapters. The extreme levels, however, are very difficult – some even too difficult, in my opinion. Even though I didn’t feel particularly challenged, I enjoyed playing the game – I was able to casually play while watching an episode of Battlestar Galactica!

Your joey has been captured and you need to get him back!

Hop, skip, and jump your way across tons of unique and interesting obstacles in the Australian outback! Run Roo Run is a micro-platformer featuring single screen levels filled with unique, fun obstacles and easy to learn one-touch gameplay. Play for a few minutes, or a few hours; your journey to Sydney always picks up where you left off!

  • Over 420 Levels!
  • Get 10 new free levels every week!
  • Over 100 extreme levels!
  • Leaderboards
  • Achievements
  • Full Retina Graphics Support!
  • GameCenter Support
  • Easy to learn one-touch gameplay

OnLive Desktop for iPad Now Available on App Store

Posted on by Arnold Kim.
Categories: Uncategorized.

OnLive's virtual Windows 7 / Office app for the iPad has arrived on the App Store. As we reported earlier this week, OnLive Desktop offers iPad users access to full-featured versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The applications are running on OnLive's servers and streamed to your iPad.

OnLive offers a number of plans for the service, including a Free service as server capacity is available. Paid accounts will take priority over free accounts.

Existing OnLive customers can sign in with their existing accounts and new users may sign up for a free account -- though account activation seems to be throttled and may be delayed.

As with their gaming service, performance can be subject to a number of factors, including internet speed and proximity to servers. [App Store]

Top 10 best alarm tones to make sure you wake up in the morning

Posted on by Georgia.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Wallpaper Dark Nightmare

If you have found yourself pressing the snooze button too many times on your iPhone in the morning, then here are 10 alarm tones which will ensure you get up right away.

1) Jaws Theme. Not sure if this is actually the scariest sound but it will defiantly make me decide pretty fast to get ready for work.

2) Halloween theme song.

3) Big Bang Theory. Probably the scariest of them all. Howard’s Mom yes this brings back memories for me.

4) The Grudge. I didn’t actually find this sound particularly scary but it seemed to be on everyone else’s most frightening so I figured I might be in the minority. You take a listen and let me know what you think.

5) Insidious theme. This is one horror film that I didn’t even see but after the music I may wait a bit till I try it out. The music is creepy enough to make sure that I wake up before my alarm.

6) Sonic Drowning theme. If this does not make you wake up then you never played Sonic. I actually had to turn it off before the end.

7) Scream of the red fox. You would never expect an animal to have such a unusual scream but it is better used in a horror film. Sounding this scary its a shock these animals ever mate.

8 ) Saw theme with talking.

9) Terminator 2 Theme. Probably one of the most cool yet perturbing sounds. It fills me with both inspiration and trepidation.

10) Jokers Laugh, The Dark Knight

Im sure that you could tell me many really scary themes and songs which I missed. Interestingly I did try the Friday the 13th theme three times but without the scary man in the mask following you I found the music itself most relaxing so I left it out. If you want to know how you can sample music from YouTube [sample alarm sounds from youtube]

These alarm tones not do it for you? Tell us which sound would get you up and ready right away in the comments below.

Daily tip: How to text message multiple photos at once

Posted on by Allyson Kazmucha.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Ever wondered whether or not you can text message multiple photos at once? The answer is yes. Sending them individually is annoying and time consuming. And why when your iPhone easily allows you to send multiple photos at once? This will not only work for text messaging but for e-mailing photos as well.

Although you can send multiple images at once there is still a few caveats that we’ve found. The first being that you can only send a certain number at once. In most instances, this seems to be five. It also may depend on the size of the photos you’re trying to send. You can also only send one video message at a time (for now anyways).

To text multiple images at once, follow these easy steps –

  1. Open your Photos app and hit the arrow in the upper right hand corner.
  2. Now you should see a few new options along the bottom – Share, Copy, Add To (only in iOS 5), and Delete
  3. Tap on the photos you would like to SMS and then click Share. If you’re tapping on too many, the Share option will be greyed out.
  4. Once you’ve tapped Share you’ll be presented with a few options. Tap Message to send them via text.
  5. Your message app will automatically open. Just type in the name of the person you want to send them to and click Send.

That’s it! All your photos will be sent to the recipient. They will receive them as separate messages but this method seems to be a lot easier than tapping each photo individually.

Spotted at CES: Skech Trax iPhone 4 case

    Posted on by Kelly Guimont.

Today, while checking out the variety of iPhone case options available in the iLounge Pavilion at CES, I saw a display that caught my eye: iPhone 4 cases made from recycled bicycle tires. As a Portlander, I am legally obligated* to follow up on any product that is recycled or bike-related, so I went over and checked them out.

They are made by a company called Skech, and I actually got my hands on the Skech Trax case. This is a flip style case (like a steno pad, not like a book) with a nice soft interior and the exterior is made of the aforementioned used tires. This is cool because all the cases are a little different and have some cool texture to them.

I also liked that the inside material is available in a variety of colors, and the flap that covers the screen also includes a couple of card sleeves for business cards or ID and a credit card if you need to travel light. It has a hole for the camera, and the top is open for access to power or the headphone jack. There is a magnetic clasp to hold it shut the rest of the time, and the whole thing feels really well put together.

Be aware that it is not the most protectionary of cases, but it will keep your keys off the screen while your phone is in your bag, and look reasonably nice outside your bag too.

Skech makes a variety of other iPhone cases, but this one stood out and I wanted to show it to all of you.

*There was an ordinance passed in 1998.**

    **Yes, I am kidding.

China launch of iPhone 4S goes awry as crowds overwhelm Beijing flagship store

    Posted on by Michael Rose.

The mainland China launch of the iPhone 4S hasn't gone as planned in Beijing, according to reports from Bloomberg, MIC Gadget and other sources.

When massive crowds at Apple's flagship store in the capital city began to cause crowding problems (and when Apple employees and Chinese security personnel realized that the vast majority of the queued would-be buyers were scalpers looking to purchase & then resell the in-demand phones), the store opening was delayed. Angry linewaiters began chanting for the store to open, eventually throwing eggs at the store facade.

Now the announcement has apparently been made: no more queuing, and no iPhone 4S sales at the Beijing flagship store today. Other stores in the capital and in Shanghai apparently had no such crowd control issues, and China Unicom sent text reminders to subscribers that they could order the iPhone 4S for free home delivery.

iPhone 4S launch in China draws large crowds, unnecessary violence and SWAT teams (video)

No Apple product launch is complete without long lines, frustration and utter exhaustion. Unfortunately, the arrival of the iPhone 4S has escalated this reality to a new level in China. We're now reading reports of fights breaking out between competing gangs of scalpers in the country, each hoping to get their hands on large quantities of Cupertino's latest smartphone. The conflicts have been significant enough to attract the attention of Chinese police, and we now hear that the Apple Store in Beijing is keeping its doors locked in attempt to make the crowds leave. While we've yet hear of any significant injuries, it seems the company's storefront is now coated with plenty of eggs. If you're interested to keep track of the unfortunate situation, you'll find more coverage below and a video after the break.

iPhone 4S Launch Delayed in Beijing as SWAT Teams Respond to Violence

    Posted on by Eric Slivka.
    Categories: Uncategorized.

Reports coming in from M.I.C gadget and AppleInsider claim that Apple's Chinese launch of the iPhone 4S is not going particularly smoothly, with violence breaking out ahead of the opening at Apple's Sanlitun retail store in Beijing. According to reports, the violence has resulted in Apple delaying the planned early opening of the store by at least an hour, with the company potentially having canceled today's launch there entirely. From M.I.C gadget:
Lines outside the Apple store in Beijing’s Sanlitun district show no signs of shortening, causing frustration for the thousands of fans and scalpers desperate to get their hands on the iPhone 4S. Now some of that disappointment is turning to anger, with reports of fights breaking out between gangs of scalpers, and guess what, Beijing SWAT teams arrived. So, the Apple store employees later announced that the launch of iPhone 4S is cancelled at the Apple’s flagship store in Beijing, and all scalpers are pissed.
Bloomberg notes that Apple's "main store in Beijing" (presumably the Sanlitun store) is currently being pelted with eggs by customers upset with the delayed opening.

Officers from Beijing's SWAT team arrive at Apple's Sanlitun retail store
Apple has seen similar large crowds dominated by scalpers at many of its major product launches in China, with teams of people working to purchase as much of the available stock as possible for resale at higher prices. Violence has occasionally erupted both between scalpers and between scalpers and those upset with their strategies.

Update: Bloomberg now has an expanded story on the situation.
Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s main store in Beijing was pelted with eggs from a crowd of about 500 people after it failed to open on time for the start of sales of the iPhone 4S.

Apple had advertised that the store would open at 7 a.m. At about 7:15 a.m., the crowd began chanting “Open the door!” and “Liars!” after a man with a bullhorn said the phone would not go on sale today, without giving an explanation. The man also declined to identify himself to a Bloomberg News reporter. The crowd chased away a man who tried to stop the egg throwing.

Apple Working to Lease 700,000-800,000 Square Feet of New Office Space in Sunnyvale

    Posted on by Eric Slivka.
    Categories: Uncategorized.
While Apple moves forward on plans for its new 2.8 million square foot corporate campus in Cupertino, the company continues to grow with the success of its products. Apple's interim space needs led the company to lease 373,000 square feet in Cupertino six months ago, and soon after expand its New York City presence to over 50,000 square feet.

The San Jose Mercury News now reports that Apple is working on deals to lease between 700,000 and 800,000 square feet of additional space in Sunnyvale, California, adjacent to the company's hometown of Cupertino.

According to the report, Apple has already signed a lease for a four-building complex in Sunnyvale totaling 215,000 square feet. The company is said to be preparing move into the new facility, which is approximately seven miles from Apple's main corporate campus, by the end of this quarter.

The company has also signed a lease for over 100,000 square feet in another two-building complex. Estimates suggest that Apple could house about 1,300 employees over the two sites, but could push that Sunnyvale population to over 3,000 if it can track down the additional space it is looking for.
"Apple seems to be gobbling up everything they can," said Chad Leiker, a vice president with Kidder Mathews, a realty firm. "They are taking a ton of space."
Apple has long been overflowing its main Cupertino campus, purchasing and leasing additional space surrounding the campus and elsewhere. The company's plans for its new major campus are intended to allow it to consolidate many of those space needs currently served by leased space into a single company-owned location. But with construction on the new campus yet to get underway, Apple will need to continue leasing new space over the next several years in order to handle its rapidly expanding workforce.

Kogeto unveils Dot panoramic video capture prototypes for Android, GoPro (video)

    Categories: Uncategorized.
Earlier this week, Kogeto announced plans to bring its Dot panoramic video recording accessory to Android handsets. Having already launched an iPhone version of the device back in May, Kogeto has a prototype of its Android counterpart on display here at CES, along with a second prototype, for the GoPro HD Hero 2. The idea behind the device is pretty simple: just download Kogeto's app, attach the holster to your smartphone, and begin recording. The accessory will then automatically capture 360-degree panoramic video, which can then be uploaded to the web, via the company's dedicated web platform. While you're there, you can also use Kogeto's online editing tool to cut and splice your video, jumping from angle to angle with the company's intuitive user interface. The quality of the video we captured during our hands-on with an iPhone 4 version wasn't exactly top-notch, but we're told that there are notable improvements for 4S users. All told, it's definitely a cool little attachment, and one that seems rife with creative potential. The iPhone 4 version, as we mentioned earlier this year, retails for $79. The Android rendition, meanwhile, is slated to hit the market this fall, likely for a similar price. No word yet on when we can expect to see the Dot arrive for GoPro, but be sure to check out our full gallery and video, after the break.

Mat Smith contributed to this report.

Target confirms Apple center openings, talk to Geniuses where you buy your socks

Target this week confirmed rumors that it will be adding Apple mini-stores to a handful of its retail locations. A representative for the bullseye store told The New York Times that 25 locations will be getting what it describes as "extended displays." The mega-retailer refused to go into details, so far as what the areas will stock, but it will likely contain, at the very least, the iPads and iPhones the store already carries. Not word on an exact date, either, but the areas should be open before year's end.

Hands on with the Invisible Keypad for iPhone prototype

    Posted on by Leanna Lofte.
    Categories: Uncategorized.

At CES 2012, we encountered the Invisible Keypad, an iPhone case that allows you to “feel” your keyboard. The screen protector part of the case has ridges strategically placed for the iPhone’s portrait keyboard. These ridges are positioned above and outside each key so that you must tap between them versus on them. The creators went with this design to be less obstructive to your screen when the keyboard is not in use.

We only played with a prototype of the case. The final version promises to be slimmer and more polished and is scheduled to release in the first half of the year.
