Daily Tip: How to activate AssistiveTouch to overcome hardware button problems on iPhone, iPad

Posted on January 16, 2012 by George Lim.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Curious how to enable iOS 5‘s Assistive Touch accessibility feature? Whether you have trouble using the physical controls on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, or the controls themselves have simply stopped working properly, Assistive Touch can give you a great, software-based alternative.

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Scroll all the way down and tap AssistiveTouch then toggle it on. (You’ll know its working, when you see a floating button appear on your screen.)

Turning on AssistiveTouch causes a semi-transparent button to appear. Tapping this button gives you access to the same functions as the hardware buttons, such as volume up or down, as well as several gesture types, like pinch to zoom. You can even set custom gestures.

BONUS: If you don’t wish to constantly have AssistiveTouch on your screen, you can set AssistiveTouch to your “Triple Click Home” function and call upon it when required.

Review: Mujjo capacitive touchscreen gloves for iPhone and iPad

Giveaway: Leave a comment below to enter to win one of 10 free pairs of Mujjo capacitive touchscreen gloves for iPhone and iPad!

Why have I instantly fallen in love with Mujjo’s capacitive touchscreen gloves for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad? It’s simple, really. I live in Canada where it’s routinely been -20 celsius for the last couple of weeks — so cold that when you go outside your face freezes and the last thing you want to do is pull off your nice warm gloves just to use your iPhone while out and about. You’d rather miss a call, wait to answer a text, or forget about looking something up on the web than risk the frostbite inducing winds and bone chilling snow. But with Mujjo, I don’t have to give up my multitouch just to stay warm — thanks to the capacitive carry-through, I can slide to unlock and tap away all from within the comfort of my gloves.

Unlike some iPhone-friendly gloves, Mujjo doesn’t just weave capacitive thread into the thumb and forefinger, but they’re made of high-quality silver-coated nylon fibers knitted into the fabric of the glove. The entire gloves! You can tap away with any finger you like. You can tap away with your knuckles, palm, ridge of your hand — literally any part of the glove. That makes it so much easier to use in the cold weather and is a huge advantage over other gloves. The only downside is that they made two-sizes fits all, and I have fairly small hands so even the smaller size is a little loose on me, and I need to push a little harder to make the capacitive connection than I expect someone with larger hands might.

Wearing the Mujjo, I could do everything I needed to do with my iPhone, including making and answering phone calls, texting, and surfing the web at about 80% of my normal speed.

The good

  • Capacitive material throughout the glove.
  • Warm and comfortable.

The bad

  • Two sizes fits all might be a little loose or tight on those with really small or large hands.

The conclusion

Mujjo capacitive touchscreen gloves are must-have for any serious iPhone user in a cold, wintery climate.

Apple takes its recycling programme across to the UK, might pay for your old stuff

Posted on by Mat Smith.

It looks like Apple loves recycling so very much, it's taking it across the Atlantic. The UK will also get to some cash for their technological old rope, with the Reuse and Recycling programme arriving to take that pesky dated tech off your hands -- and remunerate you for the effort. The news arrives not long after Apple published its annual responsibilty report, detailing its eco efforts across its supply chain. The project extends across iPods, iPhones, iPads, Macs and PCs -- and it doesn't even matter if they work. The program will assess whether there's cash value somewhere in it and will either credit your account or offer up free recycling options. Check the source to see whether your device qualifies, and just wait for the money to roll in.

iPad 3 code names and Facebook mentions found in iOS 5.1 beta 3

Posted on by Chris Parsons.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Deep within iOS 5.1 beta 3 are mentions to two next-generation iPad 3 code names, J1AP and J2AP, as well as ongoing references to Facebook. While digging through firmware code is not a sure fire way of finding out exactly Apple is up to — it has in the past yielded some results. In this case, they seem in line with a previous account from Digitimes on iPad 3 code names J1 and J2. These likely, though not definitely, refer to the Wi-Fi and cellular data versions of iPad 3.

Another tidbit of information found within the firmware is that Facebook is again being mentioned. As we know it, iOS 4 was set to have Facebook integration but it was subsequently dropped from the OS when an agreement couldn’t be reached between the two companies. Could there be more integration with Facebook coming or is this simply legacy code left around, just in case?

Alas, we’ll just have to wait and see what Apple has in store for us with iOS 6 but if any of what we’re seeing in the iOS 5.1 beta 3 code turns out to be accurate then, we’re pretty glad folks still keep checking in there for things Apple may have missed. Jump on past the break, and you can see where the J1AP and J2AP are showing up.

Apple expected to announce iPad-optimized textbooks at education event this Thursday

Posted on by Leanna Lofte.
Categories: Uncategorized.

At Thursday’s education event, Apple is expected to announce textbooks in partnerships with publishers such as Pearson, McGraw-Hill, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, that are optimized for the iPad and encourage student interaction.

When Apple introduced the iPad a couple of years ago, one of the product’s promises was that it could change the classroom experience. Founder Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he wanted to transform the textbook industry by hiring writers to create digital versions and making them a feature of the iPad.

As an educator, this makes me very excited. Many changes need to be made in education, and interactive iPad-optimized textbooks will not only be a fantastic learning tool, but also add some excitement and enjoyment to the learning process which is half the battle, for students and teachers alike.

Additionally, textbooks are outrageously expensive, so I hope Apple is also worked out an agreement with publishers to make iPad-optimized textbooks more affordable.

Apple’s education event will be held on Thursday, January 19, in New York City.

Apple to Launch ‘Garageband for e-books’ on Thursday?

Posted on by Arnold Kim.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Apple's education-focused media event scheduled is scheduled for this Thursday, and more details seem to be leaking out. Earlier this evening, the Wall Street Journal reported that McGraw-Hill had been working with Apple on this project since last June. Now, ArsTechnica claims that one of the key components of Thursday's announcement is a new publishing tool for eBooks.
The current state of software tools continues to frustrate authors and publishers alike, with several authors telling Ars that they wish Apple or some other vendor would make a simple app that makes the process as easy as creating a song in GarageBand.

Our sources say Apple will announce such a tool on Thursday.
Apple is said to announcing support for the ePub 3 standard as well, and hopes to open the door for publishers to easily create interactive e-books. Steve Jobs is said to have been intimately involved with the project for several years.

Apple's media event is being held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City on Thursday, January 19. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Eastern / 7:00 AM Pacific, and Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue has been reported to be a key figure in the presentation.

iTunes Match Launches in 19 New Countries: Latin America, Baltics, Netherlands

Earlier today, we noted that iTunes Match had begun going live in Netherlands, following last week's news of an agreement between Apple and Dutch copyright oversight group Buma/Stemra.

But as Apple now details on its iTunes Match availability page, the service actually launched in 19 new countries today, focusing on Latin America, the Baltic states, and the Netherlands.

The full list of new markets includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.

Today's additions bring the total number of countries with iTunes Match availability to 37, with Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Netherlands also gaining iTunes in the Cloud compatibility with music and music videos for the first time.

The Latin American countries seeing iTunes Match debut today already had the iTunes in the Cloud functionality, which allows users to re-download purchased content any number of times to devices associated with their iTunes Store accounts.

Leanna’s most used iPhone and iPad accessories of 2011

Leanna's most used iPhone and iPad accessories of 2011

Like Chris Oldroyd, my most used iPhone and iPad accessories consists of a very short list. There are only have a few that I regularly used during the past year. Most of what I used was for device protection and power supply, with the exception of one accessory that enhanced my iPad experience for specific scenarios.

Smart Cover for iPad 2

I’m a minimalist at heart, and the Smart Cover is such a fantastic case, if you can even call it that, for those who want their iPad 2 as naked as possible. I won’t bore you with facts about the Smart Cover you already know, but would like to point out that if you want a little more protection, there are many other cases, like the Incipio Smart feather Ultralight Hard Shell Case that make a great companion with the Smart Cover.

OtterBox Reflex Series for iPhone and iPad

Unfortunately, being the mother of a toddler means it’s time to put my minimalist desires aside and settle for protective cases for my iPhone and iPad. I came to this realization after my daughter ripped off my Smart Cover and pushed my iPad face down across the hardwood floor resulting in a massive scratch. I immediately turned to OtterBox due to their reputation for designing high quality protective cases.

Again, I like to have as little bulk as possible, so I opted out of the Defender Series, and picked up the Reflex Series for both my iPhone and iPad. This series is designed after the crumble zone of car. In addition to not being too bulky, this case easily slides on and off which was extremely appealing to me. I often times take off my case to take photos for iMore and it was important to me to have a case that wouldn’t be a 20 minute adventure to take on and off.

Bamboo Stylus

As a math teacher, I find myself writing notes to email to my students all the time. Using my finger was not an option in my book, so I went on the search for the perfect stylus and settled on the Bamboo. My favorite thing about this stylus is how it actually has some weight to it making it feel more like a real pen.

In addition to writing out solutions to math problems, I also use the Bamboo to have my photography clients sign contracts – each and every one of them have been impressed.

Qmadix USB Mobile Charging Kit

It’s no secret that one can deplete their iPhone’s battery in matter of hours, so I make sure I have power with me everywhere I go, including the car. Plugging my iPhone into the Qmadix USB Mobile Charging Kit is something that has become as automatic as putting on my seatbelt and starting the car.

I’ve had cars with lighters in strange, tight places, but the design of Qmadix USB Mobile Charging Kit has always worked great because the usb cable plugs into the top of the charger instead of at the end. The other feature I like about the Qmadix USB Mobile Charging Kit is that the USB cable is not permanently attached to the charger. This allows me to use any cable I wish, or steal this one from the car if I run into a situation where I need to.

More on Apple’s Textbook Plans for Thursday’s Media Event

Posted on by Eric Slivka.

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at Apple's plans for its education-focused media event scheduled for this Thursday, and while the report is a bit short on specifics, it does examine some of the possibilities and demonstrates how the textbook industry is ripe for a shakeup at the hands of Apple.

Among the more specific claims included in the article is a brief discussion of the company's work with textbook publisher McGraw-Hill on a project that has been underway since last June.
McGraw-Hill Cos., Pearson and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt are among the education-publishing companies most likely affected by an Apple textbook announcement. The companies have experimented with interactive approaches, such as allowing students to take quizzes as they read and hear audio for foreign-language study, but many digital textbooks have looked a lot like their physical counterparts.

McGraw-Hill has been working with Apple on its announcement since June, a person familiar with the matter said. It wasn't known whether Pearson and Houghton Mifflin also would participate.
The report also points to Cengage Learning, another textbook publisher that has worked with Apple in the past and who will be attendance at Thursday's event. Cengage acknowledges that a combination of its content with Apple's hardware and distribution "could be exciting", but declined to talk specifics of any deal.

Daily iPad App: Tour Wrist

Posted on by Mike Schramm.
Categories: Uncategorized.

I have to say, of all the product names that I heard and saw at CES 2012 last week (and there were plenty of them), TourWrist was by far my favorite. And the app is pretty interesting as well. It's a free download for iPhone and iPad that allows you to view the company's interactive 360 degree panoramic photos of various locations and interiors. Using the iOS' gyroscope and compass, you can move your iPhone or iPad around in real space, and view TourWrist's panoramas in full 360 degree splendor.

Yes, it's a little gimmicky (and obviously looking through the window of your iPad is no substitute for being somewhere, despite their marketing), but it works quite well, and heck, it's free anyway. TourWrist told us at CES that the company wants to use this kind of software for real estate tours or brand marketing, and in the app right now, you can see inside some homes for sale, or have a look around some famous retail locations, which essentially serve as paid ads for whatever brands they represent. Unfortunately, you can't move around the locations -- these are just photos, not actual 3D environments. But you can click from room to room to see various photos of wherever you're virtually touring.

TourWrist is, again, a free download from the App Store. There are some reported issues with crashing in the iTunes comments, but if you have an iPhone 4 or iPad 2, it should work just fine. "TourWrist"! How great is that name?

Engage in the journey of the creation of the alphabet with Numberlys for iPhone and iPad

Posted on by Leanna Lofte.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Numberlys is an interactive story about the origins of the alphabet from Moonbot Studios. In a world where everything and everyoone are named after numbers, five friends embark on a mission to create something different – the alphabet.

I just finished watching, reading, and interacting with Numberlys and it’s a fantastic little story! The graphics are great and the narrator is just as awesome. Moonbot Studios did a great job of making this a hybrid between a book, movie, and game. It’s no question that any child would enjoy Numberlys, but most adults will too!

Numberlys presents a fanciful depiction of the origins of the alphabet and is the newest interactive epic from Moonbot Studios, the creators of The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Numberlys is a story App celebration of the early fantasy epics King Kong, Metropolis and Flash Gordon with a dollop of the Marx Brothers, a splash of the Fleischer Studios technicolor Superman and a little bit of the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

Numberlys is huge in scope. It’s an adventure! A mystery! A game! And a story!

Numberlys is available on the iPhone and iPad for $5.99.

iPhone and Words with Friends save a life

Posted on by Chris Rawson.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The widely-played word game Words with Friends has a built-in chat feature that lets players talk to each other, and that may well have saved a man's life. According to KCTV, a player in Missouri named Beth Legler was chatting with a fellow player from Australia named Georgie Fletcher who claimed her husband was feeling ill. Legler's husband Larry, a doctor, asked Fletcher to describe her husband's symptoms. Upon hearing the description, Dr. Legler insisted that Georgie take her husband to the hospital immediately.

At the hospital, it was discovered that Fletcher's husband had a 99 percent blockage in an artery near his heart. His doctors said that if he had not been taken to the hospital that day, there's a very real chance he could have died.

From my secret lair in the South Pacific, I have an opportunity to see for myself just how interconnected the world has become every time I use FaceTime to chat with my dad in Saudi Arabia, Skype with the rest of my family scattered across the US, or bounce stories back and forth with TUAW colleagues all over the world. Moments like the one described in KCTV's story are where the real magic of all this great technology lies, though; someone who might otherwise have died is instead walking around alive and well thanks to the unlikeliest of tools and circumstances.

Powermat intros new iPhone 4 case, augmented reality app

Posted on by Simon Sage.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Powermat had a decent presence at CES 2012, not only by showing off their first Duracell co-branded iPhone 4 case and wireless charging pad, but also announcing their first app. Powermat has partnered with Madison Square Garden so that when you place your iPhone onto one of the mats built into the counters in the box seats, the app will give you the option to check in via Facebook Places. While that’s cool, and sets the stage for a future cross-section of location-based social networks and wireless charging, the real function of the Powermat app is to find charging locations with augmented reality; just point your iPhone’s camera in any given direction, and you’ll see which spots have a Powermat installed. Favorite places don’t have one? You can also use the app to vote on locations you’d like to see sporting some charging mats. Powermat can then use those votes to convince businesses to buy a few. Of course, the app will also issue a notification when you’re running low on battery life, and prompt you to launch into a search.

One of the more interesting uses for Powermats in businesses is the notion of monetizing charging, so you’d have to pay another buck or two to activate the charging mat. Sure, it seems like a bit of a money grab, especially if Powermat ends up skimming some of that revenue for themselves, but certainly an interesting opportunity for business owners of call kinds.

Sure, it’s handy having a few mats around the house to charge, but it’s when you’re out on the town that you’re likely to need a charge the most, so I’m really excited for these to become a more common sight. The Duracell partnership is cool firstly because it puts stand-alone wirelessly-charging batteries on the horizon, but also because Duracell is a early member of the Qi Consortium, so Powermat may eventually lead the charge in a global interoperable standard for the technology. Smartphone manufacturers will definitely be much more likely to start building in receivers if Powermat has managed to sell a bunch of compatible mats to the public already.

The new iPhone 4 case, charging puck, pad, and app are due out in the Spring. Hit the jump for a video rundown (sorry for the obnoxious lighting).

Chris Oldroyd’s most-used accessories of 2011

Chris Oldroyd’s most-used accessories of 2011

When I was asked to put together a list of my most-used accessories of 2011, it got me thinking that I actually don’t use very many accessories at all. In total I have four that I use on a regular basis. Here’s a little bit about each one and why they are special to me.

Brodit iPhone 4S mount

There are a large variety of car mounts for the iPhone but Brodit from Sweden has been my number one mounting solution for the last ten years. It is an incredible mount that works beautifully. It comes in two parts, a Proclip that is specific to the make and model of car you own. They are available for different mounting positions within your car, you choose where you want your device and buy the Proclip to suit. Installing it is simple, no drilling or damage to your car interior, each clip is designed to be pushed into position and held in place by your cars dashboard surround.

Once you have the Proclip installed, the Brodit mount screws into that and it is a really secure fit. The mounts are available in different configurations, some come with a 12V car plug, some with pass through connectors and some as just passive mounts. Whichever one you choose, it will be precision made, lined with soft padding and will fit perfectly. If you want a car mount, don’t bother with any other!

Kensington LiquidAUX For iPhone And iPod

Of the many car audio interfaces for iPhone, the Kensington LiguidAUX is my favorite. My VW Passatt has a 3.5mm input for an iPod or iPhone but I really dislike having a charger in the bottom of my iPhone and another cable coming out of the 3.5mm jack. To get round this, I use a Kensington LiquidAUX. This doubles as a car charger but also takes the audio from the dock connector and transfers that to a 3.5mm input for your car stereo. This give you the flexibility to make all the cabling in your car much neater all round. The Kensington LiquidAUX also comes with a small remote control that you can fix to your steering wheel. This gives you the ability to skip tracks and play and pause without your hands leaving the wheel. It’s hard to find now, so if anyone knows of something similar, let me know in the comments.

iPhone 4S dock

iPhone docks are essential. When my iPhone 4S isn’t in my hand, it will be in its dock at the side of my bed, that’s where it charges and syncs all my data to iCloud during the night. I have tried third party docks and none are as nice as the Apple dock. Yes it is expensive but you only get what you pay for. It feels solid, it fits perfectly and looks beautiful.

Marware CEO Hybrid for iPad 2

I hate cases and refuse to have one on my iPhone 4S, unfortunatley the iPad 2 gets  lot more rough treatment by my 2 year old so a case is a must for this. I considered many options but the Marware CEO Hybrid stood out for a few different reasons.

First off is the fact that it works like an Apple Smart Cover, when you open it, the screen turns on. Secondly, it covers all areas of the device, it isn’t the slimmest case in the world, but it protects all angles. I have dropped it a few times on the road outside of my house and the case took the damage and the iPad 2 is perfect. The final reason is how it looks, a carbon fibre look, black and sexy. It really makes your iPad 2 look the part!

Apple adds new iTunes info pop-up tabs… that look just like Android Market

Apple adds new iTunes info pop-up tabs... that look just like Android Market

Apple has snuck a couple of new features into their apps pages in iTunes, specifically an information popup with tabbed content remarkably similar to how Google presents Android Market details. We know that in the past Android has been accused of copying Apple, but like Notification Center this time it looks like Apple is the one caught with their fingers in the copy jar.

The iTunes pop-up windows are activated by a new information icon which will appear when hovering over an app icon. The purpose of this is to make things easier — the information appears right in front of you now without having to click through and load a new page. Movies and TV shows are also getting in on the action, although they’ll have a play button to preview a clip of the video instead.
