How to prepare your old Apple Watch for sale

Ready to upgrade to a new Apple Watch? Here's how to reset your old one and prepare it for sale.

With a new Apple Watch around the corner, it might be time to consider what you'll have to do to sell or give away your old smartwatch. The majority of your Apple Watch's data lives on your iPhone, so it's not a particularly complicated process to prepare your watch for a potential buyer or relative. Here's how to go about it!

When to prepare your old Apple Watch for sale

If you're still actively using your Apple Watch, you'll want to wait to follow these steps until you have your new Apple Watch in house — otherwise, you risk breaking Activity streaks or other records by having days between when you last sync your current Apple Watch and set up your new one.

If it's an Apple Watch you're not currently using, you can get it ready for sale at any point — there's no risk of lost data.

How to unpair your Apple Watch and make a backup

When you unpair your Apple Watch via your iPhone's Watch app, it automatically syncs the latest data from your smartwatch before restoring it to factory settings. It's the best and smartest way to save your most recent data while preparing your old watch for sale.

How to unpair your Apple Watch via the Watch app

  1. Go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your active watch at the top of the My Watch screen.
  3. Tap the info button to the right of your current watch.
  4. Select Unpair Apple Watch.

  5. Confirm the process by pressing Unpair [watch name].
  6. Disable Activation Lock by entering your Apple ID password and pressing Unpair.
  7. Your watch will now begin backing up your watch's latest data to your iPhone. Once it's finished, it will unpair itself from your current iPhone, delete all active Bluetooth accessory pairings, remove any Apple Pay cards used on Apple Watch, and wipe the passcode. Finally, your watch will restore itself to Apple's factory settings.

  8. Once this has finished, make a backup of your current iPhone if you want to make sure your Apple Watch data is safe and secure.

It'll take a few moments to back up your Apple Watch and complete the sync and wipe process. Once finished, however, the Apple Watch will have been reset to its factory default, and is ready for its next step.

How to unpair your Apple Watch directly on the smartwatch

You can unpair your Apple Watch from the smartwatch itself, but I don't recommend it, as it won't sync to your iPhone and requires an extra step to disable Activation Lock. (And remember, while Activation Lock is enabled, a new user won't be able to set up the Apple Watch.)

  1. Launch the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap on the General setting.
  3. Select Reset.

  4. Tap on Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Type in your passcode (if enabled).
  6. Tap on Continue to confirm the reset.

  7. Once the Apple Watch has finished restoring, navigate to iCloud.com from your computer's web browser.
  8. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
  9. Click on Settings.

  10. Select your Apple Watch under My Devices.
  11. Click on the X next to your Apple Watch to remove it.
  12. Click Remove to confirm.

Finish preparing your Apple Watch for sale

Once you've reset your Apple Watch's software, it's time to make it look nice for a potential buyer. You'll need to decide if you're selling it or giving it away with its current band setup, clean the casing, bundle cords, and figure out where to sell it.

Clean up the casing

Simply cleaning the data on your old Apple Watch isn't enough: You should clean the casing as well. Whether the steel is as stainless as the day it shipped or your aluminum shows some well-worn chips, you want to make the best of your Apple Watch's situation.

Take a few minutes to carefully, considerately wipe that watch down with a damp cloth and make sure all dirt, oil, lint, and other stains, debris, and even fingerprints are gone from every nook and cranny.

How to clean, buff, and remove scratches from your stainless steel Apple Watch

This is especially true if you intend to sell your Apple Watch yourself and need to take photos. In that case, don't just polish it up, but put it in great lighting and make sure every angle shines.

Don't be dramatic, and don't try to hide anything. That way is where refunds lurk. Simply make it look as good as possible and take good photos. An honest sale is a good sale.

Collect cables and bands

If you're selling your Apple Watch yourself, we suggest including its magnetic charger, AC Adapter, and even the original box if you still have it — it'll give you an edge over other sellers. We also recommend including its original band or an effective substitute if the original is no longer in usable condition.

How to swap out your Apple Watch band

Also, if you have any bands that you no longer wear or won't be using, you can add them to sweeten the deal and declutter your accessories drawer, too.

Put it up for sale

Once you're finished virtually and physically cleaning your Apple Watch, it's time to sell it (or give it away). Not sure where to go about that? We've put together a list of the best places to get the most bang for your buck.

Tips and tricks to unlock all the Star Wars ‘Find the Force’ characters and collectibles

Posted on by Lory Gil.

There are 15 characters to unlock across three days during the 'Find the Force' Star Wars event. It's much easier than you think to find and unlock them all.

It may seem like a daunting task — finding all 15 Star Wars characters in a bunch of different locations across three days. Luckily, it's not as difficult as you might think. In fact, you might be able to find them all with just one stop every day. Here's everything you need to know about the best places to unlock Star Wars Find the Force augmented reality (AR) characters and what is unlocked every day.

Everything you need to know about the Find the Force event

Where is the best place to unlock all the Find the Force characters?

I made the pilgrimage this morning to my local mall, where I knew that dozens of participating retailers would all be in one convenient location. However, my first stop, a Target store, proved to be the only place I needed to go.

Different stores will have a different number of displays, but I definitely suggest visiting one of the bigger stores, like Target, Walmart, Toys 'R' Us, or Best Buy to see if you can get all of the characters in one stop.

Otherwise, you should definitely head to your local mall because many of the participating stores can be found under one roof.

What characters are unlocked?

There are different QR code logo displays in different locations throughout participating stores, each with a different Star Wars character.

The QR logo displays include:

  • Rey
  • Poe Dameron
  • Kylo Ren
  • Stormtrooper
  • Praetorian Guard

Friday, Sept. 1

  • Rey unlocks 2BB-2
  • Poe Dameron unlocks BB-9E
  • Kylo Ren unlocks Chewbacca
  • Stormtrooper unlocks Stormtrooper Executioner
  • Praetorian Guard unlocks Praetorian Guard

Saturday, Sept. 2

  • Rey unlocks Rey Hologram
  • Poe Dameron unlocks BB-8
  • Kylo Ren unlocks Kylo Ren Hologram
  • Stormtrooper unlocks C-3PO
  • Praetorian Guard unlocks R2-D2

Sunday, Sept. 3

  • Rey unlocks Admiral Ackbar
  • Poe Dameron unlocks Maz Kanata
  • Kylo Ren unlocks Captain Phasma
  • Stormtrooper unlocks Stormtrooper
  • Praetorian Guard unlocks Porgs

What collectibles do I get?

When you collect five data chips from scanning and unlocking characters, you'll earn two digital rewards. Collect 10 data chips to earn two more rewards, and collect all 15 to earn a total of six digital rewards.

Acquire five data chips

  • Unlocks a digital blip (a cartoon short) of BB-8 and BB-E9.
  • Unlocks a BB-9E moving emoji that you can copy and paste anywhere.

Acquire 10 data chips

  • Unlocks a digital blip (a cartoon short) of R2-D2.
  • Unlocks a Porgs moving emoji that you can copy and paste anywhere.

Acquire 15 data chips

  • Unlocks a digital blip (a cartoon short) of a Porg's adventure on the Millennium Falcon.
  • Unlocks an Elite Praetorian Guard moving emoji that you can copy and paste anywhere.

Can I unlock all of the Find the Force characters online?

From my experience so far, there are only a handful of characters you can unlock by visiting participating retail websites While it will get you part of the way there, you'll still need to find another way to unlock all of the characters each day.

Characters you can unlock at participating online retailers include:

Friday, Sept. 1

  • Rey unlocks the Porgs
  • Fin unlocks BB-9E
  • Rose unlocks Elite Praetorian Guard

Saturday, Sept. 2

  • Rey unlocks the Porgs
  • Fin unlocks BB-8
  • Rose unlocks R2-D2

Sunday, Sept. 3

  • Rey unlocks the Porgs
  • Fin unlocks Maz Kanata
  • Rose unlocks the Porgs

Secret trick to unlocking all the characters online

There are hundreds of people taking and sharing pictures of the AR characters they unlock at participating retail stores. Those cardboard displays in the background of the photos include the QR code, which you can use to unlock the characters yourself, without having to leave the house. Just point the Star Wars app Find the Force camera at someone else's picture. If the QR code is within view, it'll work. Go ahead — try it.

Any questions?

Check back every day to find out what characters and digital rewards are unlocked during the Find the Force event. If you have any questions, put them in the comments.

Best Apple TV Gaming Controllers

Make your Apple TV feel more like a gaming console with these great gaming controllers!

Gaming on your Apple TV has never been more fun. With new games coming out every week, there's always something new to play. While practically all Apple TV games work just fine with the Siri remote, an MFi gaming controller brings a more classic, console-like feel to the experience that any gamer can appreciate. Here are our favorite gaming controllers for your Apple TV.

SteelSeries Nimbus

SteelSeries is known for making top-notch game controllers for Mac and PCs, and the Nimbus wireless game controller is the top of the line for gaming on Apple TV.

It feels comfortable in your hands; the handle grips are substantial yet light, and it is precision-weighted for lengthy gaming sessions.

The rechargeable battery can last up to 40 hours of solid gameplay. While our own Lory Gil never tried playing for 40 hours straight, she can tell you from personal experience that the battery lasts for weeks with daily long-session use.

The controller features a special menu button right on the front so that you can access settings and other menu options in various Apple TV controller-supported games. There are four LED lights on the front so you can easily see which player you are during multiplayer games.

You can also pair the Nimbus with any Bluetooth-compatible Apple device, like a Mac, iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. You can pick up a SteelSeries Nimbus for roughly $44.

Horipad Ultimate

For all you PlayStation gamers out there, the Horipad Ultimate offers a very similar experience, both in layout and feel.

All the buttons you need are included on the Horipad — analog sticks, triggers, bumpers, and a directional pad. The Horipad even features a Menu button to help you navigate through your Apple TV when necessary. The biggest difference between the Horipad and the SteelSeries is the increased battery life.

For $49, the Horipad Ultimate will keep you playing for much longer, with an 80-hour battery life, you'll find yourself reaching for that Lightning cable far less often.

MadCatz C.T.R.L.i

While you may like to crack jokes about how MadCatz controllers are the third-party controller nobody wanted to play Super Smash Bros. with at your birthday party, the fact of the matter is MadCatz has been in the controller business a long time and know what they're doing. If you prefer the Xbox-style layout, the MadCatz C.T.R.L.i MFi controller will be perfect for you.

Two analog sticks, a directional pad, color-coded precision buttons, two bumpers, and two triggers, the MadCatz C.T.R.L.i comes with all the buttons you need to get the most out of your gaming experience. Plus, it even has a dedicated Home button on the front that functions like the Siri remote's TV button.

One minor drawback of the MadCatz C.T.R.L.i is that it requires two AAA batteries, which are included in the $59 price tag.

Auto Brightness used to be a fixture of the Display & Brightness section in iOS 10. Whenever the auto brightness would behave erratically, you’d go in, turn it off, and take matters in your own hand. Because of the Control Center slider, brightness has always been quite easy to adjust. In iOS 11, Apple has moved this feature to the Accessibility section. Continue reading

How to restore your Apple Watch from a backup

Purchased a new Apple Watch recently and want to transfer your old Watch's data? Here's how to restore from a backup.

Your current Apple Watch has had a good run, but you've decided to either retire it for a new model or reset it because of a troubleshooting issue. In either case, if you plan on salvaging your past Health, Activity, and Workout data, you'll need to restore the new watch or factory-reset model from a backup.

How Apple Watch backups work

Whenever your Watch is connected your iPhone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, it automatically syncs your latest Health, Workout, Activity, and app data; this information then gets bundled as an Apple Watch backup into your iPhone's iCloud or encrypted iTunes backup, depending on how you choose to safeguard your phone.

Note: If you use unencrypted iTunes backups to back up your iPhone, you'll lose out on saving any Health data — make sure you're backing up via iCloud or an encrypted iTunes backup!

As such, what you might think of as a backup is really more of a "sync" — the Apple Watch syncs to your iPhone, where its information is then siloed into a Watch backup file. This is also why you can't force a manual Apple Watch backup in the same way you can press "Back Up Now" for the iPhone's iCloud backup service; since your Apple Watch is constantly syncing even when it's not connected to Wi-Fi, you don't need to manually sync it.

How to back up your Apple Watch

It also means that in order to restore your Apple Watch from a backup, you'll need your current iPhone (or a new iPhone restored from your old iPhone's backup file).

How to restore your Apple Watch from a backup

First and foremost, make sure the iPhone you want to use is either the device your Apple Watch was previously synced with, or you've set up a new iPhone from your old iPhone's iCloud or iTunes backup.

  1. Open the Watch app. (You can also bring your Apple Watch near your iPhone to bring up a similar interface to the AirPods pairing screen, which will then launch the Watch app.)
  2. Tap the Start Pairing button under the My Watch tab.
  3. Hold your Apple Watch screen up to the iPhone's camera to begin the pairing process.
  4. Press the Restore from Backup button.
  5. Choose the relevant backup.

  6. Accept the terms and conditions.
  7. Press OK to acknowledge that the iPhone and Apple Watch share settings.
  8. Create a passcode on your Apple Watch.
  9. Set up Apple Pay (or set it up later). You may need to enter in your card security code or the entire number, depending on the card you're adding.
  10. Press Continue after reading about Emergency SOS.

  11. Your Apple Watch will now begin restoring from its backup.

While you wait for your Apple Watch to restore, you can view basic navigation tips on your Apple Watch, labeled "Apple Watch Basics." You're also free to navigate away from the Watch app on your iPhone, as your Apple Watch backup will continue restoring in the background.
