Skype for iPad

It’s official, Skype will support video calling on iPad 2 very soon. According to CNET, a Skype iPad application will be released to the App Store on Tuesday, June 28. A video of Skype’s iPad app was first posted on Skype’s official channel and then removed. Thankfully RazorianFly has the original video and it can be seen on their YouTube channel.

CNET got a chance to try out video calling on the Skype for iPad app, and has posted a hands on gallery of it. Skype for iPad will work on both iPad 1 and iPad 2, however only iPad 2 users can broadcast video because of the front-facing camera.

iCloud not yet available for Verizon iPhone

A little wait for Verizon iPhone customers yet again!

A few days ago, Apple officially announced the beta release of its new iCloud cloud-storage service at the WWDC 2011 Keynote.  The iCloud will give almost instant access to your music, apps, latest photos, and more. The iCloud service is free and has already launched in developer beta today.

While the beta version of Apple’s new iCloud became available almost instantly, many iPhone owners were able to get hold of the iCloud on any iPad, iPod Touch, Mac, PC, and their iPhones with the latest version of Apple’s software.

AT&T iPhone customers had got the latest version of the iPhone software in March along with three minor updates running on iOS version 4.3.3 now. However, Verizon iPhone customers have yet to get the latest version of the iPhone software- as they are still running on version 4.2.8.

As of now, it is not clear why Verizon customers are left behind with this delay.  But for Verizon customers with the iPhone 4, you’ll have to wait at least for a while before getting a hold of the iCloud.

The official Version of the iCloud, cloud-storage service will be releasing this fall.

WWDC 2011: iCloud

At the WWDC 2011 Keynote, the enigmatic iCloud was finally unveiled to all attending the keynote conference. Steve Jobs climbed back on stage to reveal the iCloud.

He said, “I’m going to talk about iCloud. We’ve been working on this for some time now, and I’m really excited about it.”

Before talking about the iCloud, Steve began by recalling how many years ago the PC was becoming the digital hub for one’s digital life.  Digital photos, digital videos, music. It worked for the better part of 10 years. But it has broken down in the past few years.

“iCloud stores your content in the cloud and wirelessly pushes it to all your device. It automatically uploads it, stores it, and pushes it to all your devices.”

Since it is integrated with all your apps, everything happens automatically. The iCloud can also work on the MobileMe apps since they have been re-written from the “ground up”.

The contacts that are added in any device are pushed to the cloud and then sync’d down to all the other devices.

WWDC 2011 Keynote: IOS 5 & More

Posted on by Alex.
Categories: Uncategorized.

At the WWDC Keynote, Steve Jobs unveiled the many great features of the newly released OS X Lion. The Keynote continued to highlight the sale of more than than 200 million IOS devices. ”That makes iOS the number one mobile operating system, with more than 44% of the market.”

To talk more about the IOS 5, Scott Forstall enters the stage. In reference to the iPad 2, Scott Forstall says, ”It is an amazing product, and our customers just couldn’t wait to get their hands on it… actually they did have to wait.”

“More than 15 billion songs have been sold through the iTunes Music Store, making it the #1 retailer of music in the world.”

Forstall also explains that Apple has paid out more than $2.5 billion to developers — big check signed by Steve Jobs on the screen.

Now, getting to the IOS 5, ”iOS 5 is a major release. This is incredible for our developers and our customers.”

The first new feature discussed is Notifications. We’re looking at the current notifications, the annoying pop-ups that have been “massively popular.” More than 100 billion have been pushed so far! The notification center aggregates all the notifications. It is accessed by swiping down from the top. Notifications will no longer be interrupted with the activity on the ios.

The next new feature on the IOS 5 is the Newsstand. Scott Forstall says,  ”Recently we added subscriptions, which makes it easier to get all the new issues without missing anything.” When you have purchased your news publications, they are automatically downloaded and placed on the Newsstand. It is integrated on the home screen making it look like a news stand.

Furthermore, the new issues are automatically downloaded in the background, and also available to users offline.

The third new feature discussed in the Keynote is TWITTER! ”We want to make it even easier for all our customers to use Twitter on all their iOS products.” There is a single sign-on and you’re configured for Twitter. Those credentials are then saved and there will be no need to sign in again and again. Twitter photos and the @ usernames can also be pulled automatically into contacts.

Twitter can also be integrated with many apps, including Camera and Photos. Just tap the action button, hit “Tweet” and it’s attached. “It’s that simple.”

Another great featured added in IOS 5 is TABBED BROWSING!

“It is lightning fast to switch between windows now.” You just have to tap one of the tabs and -boom, your there.

Reading List is another feature, you can save publications (just like bookmarking them) in a reading list for later reading.

Another feature, Reminders allows users to store lists of things and assign them to any dates, plus you can also assign a location. It’ll sync across devices, and with Cal.

The iPhone 4 camera is one of the best cameras on mobile, now there is a Camera button on the lock screen. Once you tap  on the camera icon and you’re right in the Camera app, ready to take a photo.

When you click on the photo icon, it will immediately take you to the photo and you can click as many photos without having to slide the lock key or enter a pass code if you’ve sent one up. Additionally, you can also use the volume button to take a picture now! You can also pinch to zoom  right in the app.

Pictures can also be edited on the ios 5 now. You can crop, rotate, reduce red-eye, and you can do a one click enhance.

Many changes are brought to Mail in IOS 5 now as well. Rich-text formatting, indentation control, draggable addresses (from To: to Cc: or Bcc:), flagging so you can mark them as unread, and now you can search the entire contents of messages. S/MIME is being added as well, for the security mavens. Furthermore, there is also an addition of a built-in dictionary that’s a service across the OS. “All apps from the App Store can use it.”

Next up is the Game Center. ”iOS is the most popular gaming platform on the planet. There are more than 100,000 game and entertainment titles in the App Store.” Games can be purchased and dowloaded directly from the game center. You can also see what scores your friends earned in what game and compete with them.

“In just 9 months we have 50 million Game Center users. To put that into perspective Xbox Live has been around for about eight years and they have around 30 million users.”

Next feature: iMessage

“I believe we have the best messaging client on the iPhone. It works tremendously well to send text messages and photos and our customers love it — our iPhone users. But what about our iPad users, and our iPod touch users?”

With iMesssage, users are able to send text messages, photos, videos, contacts, and even do group messaging. For example, one can start a convo on your iPhone and pick it up on your iPad, or the reverse if you’re into that.

“iOS 5 will ship to all of our customers this fall.”

The Apple WWDC Live Keynote started at 10:00 am Pacific time in San Francisco California.

Steve Jobs hit the stage exclaiming all 5,200 attendees who were at the Keynote and tickets that had sold out in less than 2 hours.

Steve Jobs said that there a a few things we should talk about including the  ”OS X Lion, iOS 5, and some kind of interesting new cloud stuff.”"

While Steve Jobs is on stage, he explains how the Macs have been doing extremely well over the years and how sales are almost 3/4 notebooks at this point, far outpacing desktop sales

Phil Schiller goes up on stage to explain more about the OS X Lion. Phil explains that the OS X Lion is “a major release with over 250 new features. If you’d like we can go over every one of them today.”

Phil shows an amazing feature of the OS X Lion that includes Multi-Touch He shows the multi-touch tap-to-zoom, pinching, two-finger swiping- “all with an incredible, physical realism that’s never been possible in a PC operating system before.”

Next up, Phil shows full screen applications.

With OS X Lion,  developers will be able to make their apps run in full-screen more easily.

Phil shows through Safari, iMovie, and dozens of other standard apps. Phil also shows a feature known as Mission Control. With Mission Control, you are able to see all your apps and all the documents you’re working on. And you can get to all your spaces up top, multiple views of apps, and you can get to all your widgets on the upper-left.

According to Phil, “It’s almost like task-switching in WebOS or QNX on the BlackBerry PlayBook, if you’re familiar with those”.

At the WWDC Keynote 2011, Phil is back with the mac app store saying  ”you can get your software right from the comfort of your home on your Mac.”

The Mac App Store is now the e #1 channel for buying PC software. It’s ahead of Best Buy, Walmart, and Office Depot. The App Store is now built-in to Lion. They are also adding in-app purchases, push notifications, and a built-in sandboxing mode to boost security is also added.

Resume is another feature included in the OS X Lion. Phil states, “Now when you launch an application in Lion it brings you right back to where you left off.” This includes windows, selections, tools, and also  highlighted text that appear the same way as left them.

Autosave is another great  feature included in the OS X Lion. ”The one time you might forget to save what you’re doing, something goes wrong… Why can’t the computer help you? That’s what Lion does.” Lion will automatically save the document for you without you having to do anything.

Phil further explains ”A completely new version of Mail in Lion. It’s beautiful.” In the new version of Mail in Lion there are two or three-column view, snippets on the left, and a favorites bar to get to your hottest folders.

iPhone 5 Release Date Not in June or July, According to an AT&T Rep is Just a Rumor

Posted on May 4, 2011 by Alex.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The only reason I make this post is because it’s getting a lot of attention around the web. A post on Mac Rumors is stating that one of their members e-mailed them telling them that an AT&T representative told them that there won’t be an iPhone 5 Release Date in June or July. Here is the exact quote:

Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.

Now I doubt Apple has informed any AT&T rep about the release date of the iPhone 5 and I believe that whoever sent this tip to Mac Rumors just made it up. No Apple or AT&T representative is allowed to give out any  information on upcoming Apple software that hasn’t been announced by Apple.

Apple has already informed us that their WWDC 2011 conference will focus on software and operating systems but then again Apple has never announced any new iPhone hardware in their press releases so we can’t rule out that there won’t be any iPhone in June or July because Apple is secretive about these things until they’re actually released.  To find out whether or not a new iPhone 5 is launching, we’ll just need to wait until June 6 as that’s when Apple will hold their official Worldwide Developers Conference and announce new products.

iOS 4.3.3 Doesn’t Fix Untethered Jailbreak

Posted on by Alex.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The iOS 4.3.3 software update Apple recently released does not fix the untethered jailbreak exploit used in iPhone hacker, i0n1c’s jailbreak. This has been confirmed by iPhone Dev Team member @comex. This means that users can still jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 untethered, although no iOS 4.3.3 jailbreak is out yet because the iPhone hackers will need to update their jailbreak software to support it.

Jailbreak users can expect redsn0w or some other jailbreak software to be updated to support iOS 4.3.3 in the near future. As of right now jailbreak users can still jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 using the current version of redsn0w, but the jailbreak is tethered which means they will need to keep jailbreaking every time they reboot their iOS device.

If you are a jailbreak user our advice is not to jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 until an untethered iOS 4.3.3 jailbreak is released!

iOS 4.3.3 Download

Apple released the iOS 4.3.3 software update today, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation), and iPod touch (3rd generation) just like they had promised. This update was released due to a bug in Apple’s location tracking system which saved locations in the cache whenever iTunes was synced. The following changes have been made to iOS 4.3.3:

  • Reduces the size of the cache
  • No longer backs the cache up to iTunes
  • Deletes the cache entirely when Location Services is turned off

iOS users can update their iOS Device to iOS 4.3.3 through iTunes. Apple also plans to encrypt the cache in their next major iOS update, which is iOS 5.0.

Apple Event Live: Apple Releases new iPad 2

On March 2, Apple invited many media members to announce it’s plans to reveal a new iPad. Today, at the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts in San Francisco, Californa- Apple announced the release of the new iPad, known as the Apple iPad 2 during the event.

Surprisingly, as we had expected Steve Jobs was also present at the event. The event started with Steve jobs on stage with a few update on the company’s achievements.

Steve Jobs said, “We’ve been working on this project for a while, and just didn’t want to miss this.”

He explained iBooks and how more than 100 million books had been downloaded in less than a year, the App Store that surpassed 2 billion dollars paid out to developers, and a many, many other achievements.

“In 2001, we had the iPod. In 2007, we had the iPhone. In 2010, the iPad.” At the event, Steve Jobs said, “When we introduced the iPad, we said it was our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device. People laughed at us for calling it magical — but it’s turned out to be magical. People didn’t necessarily agree with the price — but ask our competitors now 2010 was the year of the iPad. We sold nearly 15 million iPads in 2010.”

Then Steve Jobs went on to announce the biggest announcement. We are GOING to release the new iPad 2. Yes, the iPad 2 that uses a new dramatically faster chip known as the A5. The CUP is 2x faster and includes graphics 9x faster. Additionally, the power consumption is the same as that of an A4 chip.

The iPad two also has 2 built-in cameras as we had also expected- front and rear cameras. As well as a built in gyroscope. The second generation of the iPad is dramatically thinner 1/3inch, or 33% thinner than the previous model. Steve jobs also explained that the iPad 2 is actually tinner than the iPhone 4.

The iPad 2 is also ligher- from 1.5 pounds down to 1.3 pounds. It is available in WHITE as well. Jobs said, “we’re going to be shipping white from day one!” From day one, the iPad 2 will support AT&T and Verizion.

Just last year, Apple had also unveiled the original iPad at the Yerba Buena Center as well. The venue had also hosted numerous other Apple product announcements over the years. Till date, Apple has sold over more than 15 million Apple iPads in less than a year. This event, as expected was certainly a ‘big deal’ for many of us.

Apple has marked up the date for the new iPad 2 release on March 11!  Prices for the iPad will be the same exact as the ones for the previous model.

New Apple iPad 2 Release Date, Price, Specs, and Maybe iOS 5 Announcement in Apple March 2 Event

iPad 2 March 2 Event

Today Apple is holding their special event where they will be announcing their new iPad 2 tablet. The Apple iPad 2 release date, price, and specs will finally be revealed. The event is only open to those who received special invitations and will take place during 10:00 AM Pacific or 1:00 PM Eastern time in the Yerba Buena Center for Arts Theater in San Francisco, California.

There has been an awful lot of rumors of the new iPad 2 circulating on news sites and the web, but nothing has been leaked. It seems logical for Apple to add a camera on the front and back of the iPad 2 so don’t be surprised if that happens. There is also speculation going on that the iPad 2 hardware will also be thinner.

iOS 5 software may be previewed at today’s March 2 event, but then again Apple may even hold off on previewing the iOS 5 software until later in April so that they can generate buzz for the iPad and iOS 5 separately.

iPhone 4 Wins Best Mobile Device Award

During the annual Mobile World Congress 2011, the iPhone 4 won the “Best Mobile Device” award. Apple wasn’t present at the Mobile World Congress because they always hold their own annual event during June so it was surprising to see them receive any award at all. The iPhone 4 was definitely a great mobile device, and now that it’s available on Verizon it’s going to be even more successful and better for consumers.

The judges comments for the iPhone 4:

Great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smart phones.

I’d have to agree with what the judges said. I really hope that Apple introduces some revolutionary new features on the next iPhone (iPhone 5) which they will announce this year in June 2011. With all the Android phones coming out, iPhone is starting to look like a boring phone. A new iPhone design would be nice for a change. iPad 3G deal may delay Verizon iPhone

Verizon iPhone 2011

When it comes to the Verizon iPhone, there is no shortage of rumors. The latest rumor suggests that Apple and AT&T had a deal with the iPad 3G. AT&T offered cheap data plans for iPad 3G customers, in exchange for Apple renewing their contract for at least another year. This is just pure speculation from a Wall Street Analyst, Brian Marshall (source: Computer World) so for all we know he could be making things up. There is still a possibility of the iPhone launching on the Verizon Wireless network, we’ll just need to play the waiting game and see.

In other news, the new iPhone 4G or iPhone HD is launching this summer with the iPhone 4.0 software.  The iPhone 4G hardware prototype was leaked, and a photo gallery of it was posted online late last month. Apple will most likely announce the iPhone 4G during the WWDC event that takes place during June 7-11.

Spirit Jailbreak download: iPhone 3.1.3, iPod touch 3.1.3, and iPad 3.2!

Spirit Jailbreak downloadThe Spirit Jailbreak download is now available. The Spirit Jailbreak sofware is a userland jailbreak created by iPhone hacker comex, with the help of CHPWN. It is the first iPad jailbreak in existence, and it’s pretty easy to use. All you do is just click “Jailbreak”. It works with iPhone 3.1.3 firmware and iPod touch 3.1.3 firmware as well.

The Spirit Jailbreak download is really tempting to try, but I don’t want to download it yet because I just got my iPad and I’m not sure if it’s worth it to jailbreak iPad yet. I’ll wait until all the bugs are ironed out. What about you?
