A lot of users jailbreak their iPhones in order to install applications and features that may have otherwise been rejected at the Apple App Store.
Occasionally though, we also come across other jailbreak apps that merely serve to enhance the native visual experience of the iPhone. The newly launched Barrel is a tool that fits this category.
Barrel offers a visual tweak to the way the icon pages are stacked and displayed. Unlike the normal mode where the icon pages appear to be placed side-by-side, Barrel offers a 3D-cube effect to these icon pages. Swiping across the several pages of homescreen icons will display each page as a side to the cube. Check out the video below to see how the tweak works:
The tweak lets users choose between two 3D-cube modes – Cube inside and Cube outside. The difference between the two is in the way the 3D-cube is viewed – from within the barrel or from outside. Of course, you may also choose to switch off the 3D-cube completely from the Settings page.
While Barrel may not exactly be a utility app, it is nevertheless a very interesting add-on that may find appeal among a lot of users. This however comes at a cost. The app retails at a price of $2.99, which we feel is very much on the expensive side. Also do note that users will need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch to install this app.
You can find Barrel in the BigBoss repository on Cydia. If you do choose to download this application, don’t forget to let us know how you find this tweak in the comments below.

Find My iPhone – the MobileMe service that lets users track their lost iPhone is now offered free with the latest iOS 4.2.1 update. This feature is available by default on the latest iOS models like iPhone 4, iPad or iPod Touch (4th generation).
However, if you are a user with an older model, it is possible to set up the location tracking feature on your iDevice provided you also have access to one of the newer models.
Interestingly, Apple has explained how to enable it on older iDevices on their website (checkout footnote 3 on this page):
"You can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2."
Here are the step-by-step instructions to set up the Find My iPhone feature on the older iPhone and iPod Touch models.
Step 1: Click here to download and install the free Find My iPhone application from the App Store on your iPhone 4, iPad or the new iPod Touch.
Step 2: If you have already set up a MobileMe account, skip this step. Otherwise, launch the application to create a new MobileMe account.
Step 3: From your iPhone Home Screen, navigate to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add a MobileMe account. Log in using your Apple ID and password.
Step 4: Once connected, turn the Find My iPhone feature on.
Step 5: Relaunch the Find My iPhone app and login using your credentials for the set up to be complete.
Step 6: These steps now need to be repeated for the older iDevices. Download the Find My iPhone app on your older iDevice and follow steps 3-5 to complete the set up.
There are a few points to note here. Firstly, the Find My iPhone feature is not available in all the countries. Secondly, you should also note that Apple has restricted the number of older devices that are tied to one latest model to three.
Interestingly though, users have noted that deleting the MobileMe account in the new iPhone or iPad does not affect the set up on the older models that are tied to this device. So if you are planning to borrow your colleague's iPhone 4 to set up Find My iPhone on your older iPhone model, you can make use of this trick.
As always, don't forget to try the feature out and let us know how it works in the comments below.

You should be aware that AirPrint, the wireless printing technology that has been introduced with the latest version of iOS, was originally intended to work over shared printers connected to Mac and Windows as well.
However, this functionality was scrapped in the public release. Consequently, AirPrint on iOS 4.2.1 only works over certain models of HP printers.
Nevertheless, if your workspace contains only a shared printer, the step-by-step instructions provided below will help you to re-enable AirPrint on Windows 7:
Step 1: You will need the latest version of iTunes on your Windows system. If you do not have it installed yet, download iTunes 10.1 before you proceed.
Step 2: Click here to download the AirPrint files. Extract the zipped version to a folder named 'AirPrint' on your desktop. This folder will contain three files – airprint.exe, libairprint.dll and Xpdfprint.dll
Step 3: If you are on a 32-bit computer, move this folder from the desktop to "C:\Program Files\". Users on a 64-bit computer will have to instead move the folder to "C:\Program Files(x86)\"
Step 4: From the desktop screen, go to Start -> Run and type CMD. Press the return key to continue
Step 5: Enter the following commands in the command window that appears. Please Note : Enter the commands as-is. Remember to insert a space after the '=' symbol.
32-bit Windows
64-bit Windows
Step 6: The airprint.exe application will now be launched. If you are prompted by the Windows Firewall, choose to 'Unblock' the application
Step 7: Configure the printer settings so that it is set to the Shared mode on both the printer settings as well as on the network settings
Step 8: You will be prompted for the Admin user ID and password the first time you launch AirPrint from your iDevice. Enter the credentials to enable wireless printing.
You are done. You should be able to print from your iPhone, iPad or iPad Touch via AirPrint to any printer connected to your Windows PC. Please let us know how the process goes in the comments below.
